MEET THE FELLOWSHIP FOR BRITISH HAIRDRESSING’S
SIGNATURE STYLISTS FOR SPRING/SUMMER 2012
Having enjoyed the good fortune to shoot with Beverly C, Nicky Clarke, Errol Douglas MBE, Mark Leeson, Richard Ward and
Charles Worthington, the Fellowship decided to ‘gift’ four of the finalists of the Fellowship Consumer Image of the Year entries at
the Fellowship Luncheon & Awards with the title of Fellowship for British Hairdressing Signature Stylist 2012.
KEN PICTON
SKYLER MCDONALD
Ken Picton’s Signature Style was
inspired by style icon Farah
Fawcett. The cut was a long
shaggy layered hair cut with lots
of definition to frame the face.
Colour was applied in the form of
peach and coppery tones to
create a feeling of separation. A
double blow dry and extra volume
mousse created the thickness in
the hair with Ken lightly rolling the
bun around the bottom of the hair
before pulling pieces loose.
Skyler’s Signature Style is
reminiscent of the classic Marcel
wave technique, used to achieve a
luscious set of uniform waves. Skyler
says; “The exciting thing about this
style is that it shows how dynamic
hair can be and how it can add to
your overall look. It is a fresh take on
an old classic and stands out from
the effortless dishevelled hairstyles
everyone seems to be favouring at
the moment.”
KARINE JACKSON
Karine Jackson’s Signature Style
features her innovative Lotus Flower
colouring technique. “The lotus
flower is a brilliant alternative to
highlights – the colour is beautifully
distributed with a much less rigid
feel. While it looks beautiful on all
ages, it’s especially clever for its
anti-ageing effect. Different shades
are placed throughout the hair
literally following the pattern of a
lotus flower.” Karine clipper cut the
models hair in order to achieve fullness on the
ends then disconnected the top layer to give lift,
before a specialist blow dry, having previously set
the hair on heated rollers.
CHRISTEL LUNDQVIST
Christel’s Signature Style draws
reference from 1940’s starlets,
channeling the infinite poise of
Grace Kelly, this look is all about
the elegance and beauty of the era.
Christel has infused the hair with
tones of muted blush and deep
truffle. The rich luminosity of the
hair is complimented by the deep
set waves and volume of the style.
“2012 is set to be awash with a
cooler palette, with tones like
merlot, Venetian red, deep maroon
and midnight black, so go rich in colour!”
Christel advises.

My Working Day
Louise Wood
Fellowship member Louise Wood
owns The Hair Advice Centre in
Englefield Green, Egham. Louise
gives us an inside view of her
typical 24 hour working day.
My alarm goes off at...
If I’m being really virtuous 05.30 am, but 06.00 am is the norm.
The first thing I do when I wake up...
Attend to my emails and review yesterday’s ‘to do’ list, adding an
unrealistic list of things to do that day. Have breakfast and drink
my (by then) cold green tea. Urgh!
On my to-do list today...
Complete the text for our quarterly magazine so layouts can be
finished and sent to the printer; plan a new bridal marketing
campaign; write up staff performance reviews; finalise details of
our 20th birthday party celebrations and travel details of our staff
Xmas Party (in June!) to Royal Ascot.
My beauty regime consists of...
My favourite way to wind down after work...
Dr Hauschka Cleansing Cream followed by Dr Hauschka Rose
Cream. Then my makeup (I couldn’t live without Laura Mercier
mineral powder) which is usually bright lips, black eyeliner and
loads of mascara.
Is reading. But I spend about an hour most nights updating our
social media pages and our blog.
If I’m staying in...
I’ll wear PJs.
On an average day I wear...
Black, is there any other colour? And as I love statement
jewellery, either a huge ring or an oversized necklace.
If I’m going out...
I’ll wear a top with jeans and some heels, something dressier for
a night in London.
Before leaving home I always...
Walk my pooch Henry before giving him a hug and kiss good bye.
My bedtime beauty regime...
On my way to work...
Cleanse and tone with Dr Hauschka – again! Dr Hauscka says
you shouldn’t moisturise at night, but as I get older and more
lines appear, I question that theory!
I return a phone call to someone on my list.
My essential salon products...
The last thing I do before I go to sleep...
I now have the UNITE professional-only range in my salon and
not a day goes by without using them. My favourite styling
and finishing products are Blow & Set, Expanda Dust, Shina Mist
and Second Day.
Is charge my iPhone and watch TV; I can’t go to sleep without
background noise.
I dream about...
A day off with absolutely no commitments.
For lunch...
If I get time for lunch, I’ll eat fruit, salad or a sandwich.
I leave the salon...
Between 9.30/10pm as my last client is 8pm. Saturday it’s earlier,
around 6pm.
FM 16
My perfect Sunday...
Reading the papers over breakfast, then cooking (my other
passion) a big lunch for family and friends – the more the merrier.
I often bake a cake for tea, then a long walk in the park before
flopping on the sofa to watch a lovely old movie.
Project X Students
are Picture Perfect
The 2012 Fellowship Project X students were
picture perfect this month as they enjoyed their
first shoot together, producing a collection inspired
by the theme ‘red carpet glamour’ at London’s
legendary Bedhead Studios.
“It was a fantastic day,” said Project X leader Karine Jackson.
“The last couple of mentoring sessions have been about setting
themselves up as professional session stylists and honing their
presentation skills, so they were absolutely ready and raring to
tackle the shoot. The guys worked in pairs and had to design and
create two red carpet looks on their model – one hair up and the
other with hair down – but both had to represent modern
glamour… red carpet with a twist. The results were amazing and
surprised even the students themselves!”
“The results were amazing and
surprised even the students
themselves!” Karine Jackson
The collection was shot by legendary TiGi photographer
Ben Cooke, styled by Darren Knight and with über-glam make-up
courtesy of Sally Crouch. “When we first met, the students were
keen to have an opportunity to practice their long hair work, so it
was great to be able to use the shoot to bring all that to life,”
added Karine.
“It’s a funny combination of
frustration and excitement
when you’re creating the looks
but there’s no doubt the
process makes you much more
confident.” Lisa Collins
Project X student Stacey Morgan from Maxwells salon agreed;
“There’s quite a lot of pressure on shoot day, but it’s really helpful
being able to pool our resources – we all have very different skills
to share.” Fellow-student and colleague Lisa Collins added; “It’s
a funny combination of frustration and excitement when you’re
creating the looks but there’s no doubt the process makes you
much more confident. We can’t wait to see the pictures!”
With their first collection in the can, the Project X students are
now looking forward to their next assignment.
Look out for the stunning results in FM's next issue!

ClubStar Evening with
Clipso Art Team and
Follow-up Demonstrations
The 5th March saw the Clipso Art Team showcase some of the most exciting prevailing hair trends to grace the S/S catwalks this
year. The team of five stylists including Freya Haines, Harriette Calvert, Emilie Pearson-Brown,Loretta Karam-Whalley and
Kim Rance worked tirelessly on creating a portfolio of styles which focused on elaborate up-dos constructed through
backcombing, backcutting and crimping to create voluminous texture.
Suitably entitled “Pastel Playground”, the Clipso Art Team‘s collection featured some
beautifully delicate shades of colouring, from candy-floss pink to baby blue and virginal
blondes which accentuated the soft, romantic feel of their elegant hair-up styles and heavily
textured undercuts. Spectator, Louise Brown said, “I really enjoyed what the art team did.
It has given me great inspiration for when I get back to the salon. I can't wait to try out some
of the colour techniques they showed tonight and it's given me some good ideas that I can
incorporate in my hairup work”.
In a great act of generosity, GHD donated five of their latest model of hairdryers, retailing at
£99 each. The hairdryers were entered in to a prize draw at the end of the night and
handed out to the five lucky winners; Millie Bartlet, Abby Thomas and Jack Wallace from
Clay Hair Salon, and Kristiana Jacimovic and Alexandra White who work at Simon

Avant Garde Hairdresser of the Year.
Indira began her workshop by talking the team through Toni and
Guy’s Avant Garde history, discussing how various images were
imagined and consequently created. Indira then turned the table
onto the group, looking through imagery that inspired them, and
advised that any medium can be an influence, from nature,
to architecture. Indira recommended that anything that holds a
structural shape can be held in the highest of regard in terms of
avant-garde, which is all about the construction.
FM 20
Indira then used a model to demonstrate a technique she used at
London Fashion Week. The look consisted of a series of knotting
techniques used to build a rod-like structure, encouraging the
team to have a go, and get involved.
The Team were then challenged to create their own hairpieces
inspired by Indira's work using different materials in a craft-like
workshop. Encouraged by Indira throughout, Becky made an
intricate braid, Ryan a colourful hair mask using a matting method,
Isabella a basket-weave/netting system, whilst Ashleigh made one
of Indira's signature plaits with hair pulled around a piece of wire.
The Team said; “We all had a fantastic day, and really enjoyed
everything Indira had to teach us, and as she was a former F.A.M.E.
Team member she really understood what we were all about!”

Member
Kevin Kahan
Current Northern Ireland Hairdresser
of the Year, Kevin Kahan is an upbeat,
energetic owner. Kevin has just taken
the UNITE professional-only haircare
range into his Bangor salon, a brand
which fills him with such enthusiasm,
he's now one of it’s creative
ambassadors.
What do you see outside your
office window
As my office is within the inner structure of the salon, I don’t have
a view outside as such, but that’s great as I’m not distracted
from the business! Having said that, I’ve created a very private,
tranquil place where I can close the door, think my own thoughts
and get inspired.
The first thing you do when you get home
Get my running shoes on and go out with my wonderful dogs in
the fresh country air.
The dinner planned for tonight
Seared tuna and a green salad.
How do you relax
Oops! I am not very good at relaxing, but generally exercise,
reading or seeing something fabulous at the theatre does the
trick!
What’s on your bedside table
A pile of books that I keep promising myself I’ll read one day.
New or vintage
Oh new every time.
What's the best thing about your
salon location
My salon is in Bangor, Northern Ireland’s best kept secret.
It has all the buzz of Belfast but comes with a beach.
Shower or bath
Shower please.
Tea or coffee
Three words to describe your salon
I love regular tea and drink copious amounts of it!
Stunning, sensuous and very professional.
The first thing you do when you get into the salon
Get the team together and wish everyone a great day!
Meditation or conversation
Conversation; there’s nothing like a good catch-up.
The view from your windows at home
What's your favourite fragrance
I live in the countryside so trees, fields and a hint of the bay.
Green Irish Tweed.
Your home described in three words
Your favourite soundtrack
Eclectic, eco and edgy.
I couldn’t possibly say because I love so many genres of music.
