Sadly there will never be another
Sassoon, much in the same vain as
there will never be another Henry
Ford, Steve Jobs or Pablo Picasso.
It’s with deep regret and sadness that we mark the passing
of one of the world’s greatest artists, and one of our very own
Patrons of Honour; Vidal Sassoon CBE.
Many finely crafted words of heartfelt condolence have been
written, detailing and charting the huge impact this man had upon
our industry, and having had the privilege to meet and interview
Vidal last year, I can vouch for every last piece of copy that’s been
published in recent weeks extolling his undisputed passion for both
our industry at large, and our very own Fellowship for British
Hairdressing.
Vidal was a true icon both within our industry, and further afield.
He was a shining beacon who represented our craft as ‘the
authority on all things hair’ throughout the fashion revolution of the
1950’s, right up to present day. Sadly there will never be another
Sassoon, much in the same vain as there will never be another
Henry Ford, Steve Jobs or Pablo Picasso. These men were all true
icons; paradoxically in the old-fashioned sense of yesteryear, true
innovators whose names live on in our daily lives and for us as hair
professionals, in every section we cut and colour in salon.
Likewise there will never be one 'name' or individual that carries
and represents our craft single-handedly in the way that Vidal did.
In fitting testament and legacy to Vidal Sassoon, (and our other
Patrons of Honour) the Fellowship’s ability to share the artistry of
our membership was always his mantra, an educational based
philosophy that has ensured the UK is number one in creatively
focused hair. More and more wonderful events such as Salon
International, Professional Hairdresser Live and as you’ll see in this
issue, International, Professional Hairdresser Live and The Tribute
Show, all reinforce that our shores are the place to be for any
fashion conscious individual that's in the business of hair. Here at
the Fellowship we now see more independent artistically focused
events than any other organisation, events that always epitomise
our strap-line ‘Creative Excellence’ and pass the creative-baton
throughout our fine membership. By virtue this weekly activity is the
finest salute we can give to our recently departed Patron of Honour,
who sadly lost his battle with Leukaemia on 9th May 2012.
Our love, thoughts and wishes are extended to his wife Ronnie,
and their three children.
Mark Creed
President
Chairman’s Review
It was with great sadness that we heard that our highly esteemed
Patron of Honour, Vidal Sassoon CBE has lost his courageous
battle with Leukaemia.
It was therefore very fitting that last December at the annual
Fellowship Luncheon and Awards the Fellowship's President,
Mark Creed honoured Vidal with a Fellowship first, the Ultimate
Hair Icon Award. Vidal's vision, passion and creative zest coupled
with his continuous campaign for education, training and
personal development new no bounds. In presenting this award
The Fellowship saluted sixty years of hairdressing brilliance.
Whilst honouring Vidal with this award, we also launched another
Fellowship first, The Fellowship Scholarship. In association with
the Sassoon Academy and sponsored by Denman International,
Hairdressers Journal and Professional Hairdresser this fabulous
opportunity will reward one candidate with a once in a lifetime
opportunity to undertake a one month intensive training course at
Sassoon's London Academy.
On behalf of The Fellowship I would like to extend
our congratulations to Joe Kinerman-Daltrey on
being the fortunate candidate. Read all about him

The Industry Mourns
the Sad Passing of
Vidal Sassoon CBE
It is with great sadness that we announce
the passing of Vidal Sassoon CBE.
The 84 year old hairdresser sadly lost his battle with
leukaemia on 9th May, 2012. He became the most
celebrated hairdresser in the world having begun his
career as an apprentice during the Second World War
going on to revolutionise an industry through his iconic
haircuts, salons, schools and product lines.
Our profession owes this man a huge debt – he was prepared
to take a risk and do things differently. Vidal we salute you.
Mark Creed
The fact that Sassoon is still such a force in the industry today
says a lot about the vision of an incredible man.
Edward Hemmings
It was a total honour to have met Vidal many times throughout
my career. We use many words to describe people that have
left this world – but Vidal Sassoon was a Global Creative
Genius who revolutionised the hairdressing industry and will
continue to do so. Vidal was charismatic, humble, a visionary,
amazing orator, but above all – he was a gentle giant and the
most humble person I have ever met in our industry.
Beverly C , MBE
A revolutionary and a fighter, in the truest sense of the word.
His genius and passion radically changed our profession for
the better. Alan Richardson
Vidal’s passing is a massive loss to our industry, he was a
pioneer and an inspiration to myself, Clive and Paul. Never
before has one person done so much for our industry. He will
be sadly missed. Akin Konizi
Vidal has been a life-long inspiration on my work. Vidal’s vision
and energy has not only changed the face of hairdressing
forever but has been a life-long influence on my work. As a
person he had an incredible gentleness and a generosity of
spirit that was very special. His influence and presence will
remain with us forever and I will honour him both as a friend
and a hairdresser. Tony Rizzo
How can I write a small tribute to Vidal Sassoon when this
amazing man was a giant in the hairdressing world? I have had
the privilege of knowing Vidal throughout my hairdressing
career and the world will never see another one of his kind.
God bless Vidal. Herbert Howe
“Our industry has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the
world has lost an amazing human being. The world rarely
encounters someone who had the profound impact that Vidal had,
everyone in the industry is indebted to Vidal’s courage and singleminded vision, the effects of which will be felt for many
generations to come. All of us at Sassoon will miss him dearly, and
will honour his memory by dedicating ourselves to continuing the
work he loved so much.” Mark Hayes, Sassoon International Creative Director
FM 05
So many people have asked me how my career has been
influenced by Vidal. The real question is ‘Who in the
hairdressing industry hasn’t Vidal Sasson influenced?’
The answer is no one. Vidal Sassoon was and always will be
the first global ambassador for the hairdressing industry.
He brought credibility and defined, shaped and influenced not
just hairdressing but fashion. One of my fondest memories is
sitting next to Vidal on a flight bound for New York. He was one
of those people that you could learn so much from and who
would influence your whole career just by having the briefest of
conversations with him. One of Vidal’s mantras was that you
must leave your mark, which he has certainly achieved.
Errol Douglas MBE
He was a true Gentleman, a Pioneer that made British
hairdressing the best in the world. He will be sadly missed.
Gary France
I feel honoured and privileged to have spent time with our hero
Vidal Sasson CBE. He will always be remembered for his
inspiration and for being a true Gentleman. Debbie G
Vidal invented the cutting system in the 60’s the principles of
which every hairdresser in the world today takes for granted!
David Drew
What can I say that hasn’t already been said? 20 years of
inspiration not only professionally but personally. I will miss the
laughter the most and the bad jokes. John Vial
A great man, and a great life that really made a difference.
Rest in peace Vidal your work is well documented and
archived, it’s influence to be seen everywhere. My thoughts
are with your family and friends at this very sad time.
Raymond Bird
There aren’t many hairdressers I can think of whose death
would make headline news on both sides of the Atlantic; the
fact that Vidal’s passing does, just demonstrates his cultural
influence on the whole world. The word icon is banded about a
lot these days, but there are few people in our craft whose
iconic status has been palpable on British worldwide culture in
so many areas – music, fashion, photography – Vidal Sassoon
influenced all genres. The fact the salon and the clients are all
feeling a great loss sums up his amazing body of work and just
how he helped change the world in the 1960’s and 1970’s.
Sassoon was the first great ‘brander’ and regardless of his
amazing technical and creative output, we shouldn’t forget his
business brain and ‘never say never’ attitude. He believed
anything was possible in hairdressing and he was right.
Richard and Hellen Ward
FM 06
There are not enough words to say how much I and the world
wide hairdressing industry owe to Vidal. He changed the whole
concept of how we not only cut hair, but how women looked,
introducing a sense of freedom to them and their hair. I feel both
humbled and privileged to have worked for him for 10 years and
was proud to call him a friend. He truly is the greatest mentor
and inspiration that I or any other hairdresser could ever have.
Rest in peace Vidal, you will always be with us.
Stephen Messias
Vidal was the man who made British Hairdressing the best in
the world. It was a privilege to have met him. He will be
remembered for a long time. Ann Herman

donations be sent to American Friends of The Hebrew

Session Success
for The Fellowship!
The Fellowship for British Hairdressing hosted a
fabulous session workshop for ten lucky students
on Monday 30th April.
“I enjoy all the Fellowship workshops – but this one has been
especially inspirational” Lou Bowles, The Point
The event held at Wella World Studio, London was hosted
by compere, Fellowship Vice President and International
Art Director for Toni & Guy, Gary France and Fellowship
Events Chairman Ann Herman.
Introducing the five incredibly talented Fellowship Masters:
Andrea Martinelli of HOB Salons, Kathryn Dartnell of Haringtons,
Alessia Matta of Sassoons, Dan Spiller of Marc Antoni and Sara
Paintin of Mahogany, Gary commented: “Tonight is all about
sharing the secrets of session success.”
Proving that laying strong foundations were the perfect pitch for
session work the Masters were unanimous when it came to the
strength of the pony tail.
Each attendee was shown how not to just style a pony – but to
use it as a foundation for up to 10 different strong fashionorientated looks which they were then able to recreate.
The workshop was cited a huge success, the students each
taking away a new skill alongside an abundance of fresh
inspiration.
Gavin Hills and Holly Taylor from Hensmans both agreed:
“It was a great evening!”
Takuya Morimito and Katie Fitzgerald of Brooks and Brooks
added: “It has been a pleasure to share ideas with others –
a really great event.”
The last word went to Ben Reilly of Balmain who said:
“It’s been the best evening of ‘learning’ I’ve ever had!”

I joined Project X because I wanted to
build my confidence, improve my skills
and find new opportunities in the
industry. It’s been fantastic so far and I
especially enjoyed the shoot we did at
the Bedhead Studios.

I'm a colourist so joining Project X was a great way
to focus on new skills like cutting and styling and
to get out of my comfort zone! I also love platform
work and want to push my profile within the
industry and Project X is a perfect way to start.
I loved the day we did with Zoe Irwin and Harriet
Evans focusing on how to brand myself. Great to
meet such inspirational people too.
MATTHEW EVANS

I'm passionate about the hairdressing
industry and I joined Project X because
I know it's a great platform for your career
and offers fantastic opportunities to work
with great names. I love working with the
rest of the group, too. For me, there’s
nothing better than being surrounded by
like-minded people who are enthusiastic
and willing to share their knowledge. My
highlight so far was working with Danielle
Harvey at Sassoon's – I stood up all the
way through – probably a bit too close for
comfort – but I learned so much!

about editorial hair and getting the chance to
practise my new skills on the photoshoots.
It's great fun too!
I wanted to join Project X to get as much
experience as I can in all aspects of hairdressing,
to gain exposure and to work alongside some
really talented hairdressers. So far it’s been
AMAZING. Everyone on the course is great and we
learn loads from each other. I especially enjoyed

I'm a colour specialist and I love my salon work but
I wanted to be part of Project X as it really opens
doors on new opportunities and gives me the
chance to expand my skills – especially in session
styling and platform work. Presenting is nervewracking, but it gives me such a sense of
achievement, and by practising every month I’m
really improving and gaining in confidence.
ROCHELLE CAREY
The Hair Advice Centre, Egham, Age 20
I joined Project X because of the amazing opportunities it
offers, and the mentors I get the chance to work with. My
best day so far was working with Debbie G on presentation
skills. It helped me so much and it was nice to find out I'm
not the only one who's petrified of talking in front of a

got some amazing Project X days coming up.

Goldsworthy’s has always been involved in Project X and
I’ve loved seeing others go off and do different things, so
when I got the chance to get involved myself I jumped at
it! I'm passionate about lots of elements of hairdressing
but especially session work. I love it! You can be so
creative. I’m hoping Project X will help me to improve my
presentation skills and my confidence and I’d love to be
on the F.A.M.E. Team one day – Project X is a good way
to prepare. My highlight so far was the photoshoot at
Bedhead mentored by Karine Jackson – AMAZING!

Trevor Sorbie, Manchester, Age 21
I'm really keen to open more doors in my career, to
broaden my knowledge and to find new routes I can go
down within the industry, so Project X is perfect for
me. I'm also passionate about precision cutting and we
get lots of opportunity to learn from the best during our
Project X year – I’m so looking forward to our next
session with Mark Hayes. What an opportunity! I very
much enjoyed working with and learning from the rest of

The Big Picture
A creative workshop brought to you by
the Fellowship’s Pr Angels
On Monday March 5th, 2012 industry professionals gathered at
the Goldwell Academy to take part in the hottest new workshop
offered by the Fellowship for British Hairdressing. The Big
Picture offered salon professionals the chance to learn new
ways to boost their brand and promote their business
incorporating the latest PR methods and trade tips.
The course was hosted by Council member and Managing
Director of Flint PR, Harriet Evans. Harriet was also joined by a
power house of PR professionals including Julie Bellinger-Gibb,
Gorgeous PR, Sam Grocutt, Essence PR, Julie Allen, Jools PR,
Laura Glazebrook, LWPR and Lisa Bickerstaffe, JWPR.
Each PR took to the stage presenting their own ideas on ways to
boost branding and topics included creating a buzz through
regional PR, how to enter and win industry awards, smart local
marketing, social media and how to shoot a winning collection
and use it.
The day was skilfully led by Harriet Evans ensuring that all who
attended were there to listen and learn and under no pressure to
know anything beforehand. All the attendees had the opportunity
to put forward any concerns about their business and the PR
panel offered them a multitude of ways in which to combat the
current economic crisis and push their businesses forward amidst
this crisis.
Highlights of the day included interesting discussions on the
relevance of social media to the hairdressing industry and a
stunning visual presentation of award winning hairdressing
collections.
“The workshop was very inspirational. I’m taking away with me
great and achievable ideas to boost our branding. I will definitely
be readdressing what we're already doing and looking at ways to
move it forward as a result of today”.

Jack Reynolds from B Inspired, Amersham commented “This was
a really inspirational day. It is so good to hear from people who are
at the top of their game and know how to help us move forward
with ours. Fantastic all round!!”
The day was a raging success and everybody left the course
feeling inspired and motivated. More importantly the audience left
with the right skills and knowledge to tackle their marketing and
PR problems themselves. This was extremely empowering for
everybody and essential for any business or professional wishing
to succeed in such a fast paced industry.

HAIR COLOUR:
IT’S A PASSIONATE
Passionate about its latest colour launch and her colourful career,
Schwarzkopf Professional Global Colour Ambassador,
Lesley Lawson, talks to FM about her career, consumer
trends and the art of hair colouring...
Schwarzkopf Professional has been
offering professional colour expertise
for more than 100 years, unleashing
the colour creativity of stylists all
over the world. Having just launched
its latest colour innovation, IGORA
ROYAL Fashion Lights (available in
six fashionable shades) FM started
this interview with Lesley by asking
her for her thoughts on this asset to
her colour palette...
What’s so special about the new
IGORA ROYAL Fashion Lights?
They create expressive colour irrespective
of the client’s base colour, guaranteeing
intense contrasts and lift, even on dark or
tinted bases. They integrate lift and colour
in one step, delivering optimum radiance
and great colour intensity, as well as
outstanding hair condition and
suppleness. They’re just so easy to use
and achieve exactly what they promise:
lighten and colour in just one step.
Precise, vibrant and long lasting, they give
me complete confidence in the result,
so I can concentrate on my client and the
technique I want to use.
What makes working with Schwarzkopf
Professional so exciting for you?
I’ve been working with Schwarzkopf
Professional for eight years and there have
been lots of highlights, especially the
creative processes developing and
presenting the Essential Looks collections.
The company always allows me to keep
my creative freedom, so I can truly express
my love and passion for colour. And it
really listens to the hairdressers’ needs,
responding by staying ahead of the game
FM 12
and developing innovative products.
What is so special about Schwarzkopf
Professional colour brands?
The range allows you to satisfy the needs
of all salon customers. ESSENSITY for
example combines a highly convincing
colour performance with the power of
nature. BLONDME offers beautiful clean
tones and is a real premium expert for
blonde. And with IGORA ROYAL,
colourists can achieve the most stunning,
long lasting vibrant colours that reflect
perfect luminosity.
IGORA ROYAL is the company’s
largest permanent colour; why so?
Performance and result – the most
convincing reasons for hairdressers to
work with any product. It presents an
extensive range of beautiful shades which
simply raise the bar when it comes to
performance and convenience.
In short, what does colour mean to you?
Colour is life and my passion because it
has the power to significantly influence
peoples’ appearance. The right hair colour
choice adds beauty and radiance to a
person; it complements and completes
their look and has the power to give
women confidence. And hair colour can
often turn a good haircut into a stunning
and outrageous haircut, especially if you
use the new IGORA ROYAL Fashion Lights
which offer colourists the maximum of
creativity and innovation.
Why did you specialise as a colourist,
what makes the job so special?
The great thing about colouring is seeing
a total transformation at the end of the
process. And I love the fact that unlike
cutting, where you take something away
from the client, with colouring, you are
adding something fashionable and
beautiful.
What is the most important aspect of
a colourist’s education?
Learning the technical and scientific
aspects of hair colour as well as the
products’ functional qualities. If you are
aware of this, then basically nothing can
go wrong. And gaining experience really
counts; the longer you work with colour,
the better you get. I also recommend that
hairdressers should try to gain as much
experience as possible outside of daily
salon work, such as working on local
fashion shows and events or by attending
external seminars and photo-shoots.
What talents does a good colourist
need?
Your biggest talent should be enjoying
what you do – you need to have fun at
work! Being a colourist also means you
need to be up to date with new trends in
colour and fashion. Be open minded and
interested, good with people and give
great customer advice. And never
underestimate the technical and scientific
aspect of the work – you need to be a
master of this to create the right results.
What are the trend colours for 2012?
Hairdressers and colourists must keep up
to date when it comes to trends, which is
why I love working for Schwarzkopf
Professional’s Essential Looks collections.
It’s where we translate the twice-annual
catwalk trends into a commercial reality for
hairdressers and their clients all over the
world. Trends inspire us but they
BUSINESS
constantly change. So the most important
thing a colourist should always have in
mind is the hair colour complementing skin
tone and eye colour before settling on a
new look.
And finally, how do you ensure the hair
you’ve beautifully coloured remains that
way until the client’s next salon visit?
I always recommend care products that
match the needs of coloured hair, such as
the new BC Color Freeze line. Formulated
especially for coloured hair, these products
give up to 90% colour retention and 100%
colour shine between salon visits. Most
importantly, beautiful hair is healthy looking
and well groomed. Someone’s hair is like a
business card for their personality; it’s
a real statement and it’s our job to
colour it beautifully and advise
people how to look after it
accordingly. That’s what we
do best!
The company always allows me to keep my
creative freedom, so I can truly express my love
and passion for colour. And it really listens to the
hairdressers’ needs, responding by staying ahead
of the game and developing innovative products.

I chose to join Colour Project
as I wanted to build my
confidence with colour and to
help me think more out of the
box when it comes to servicing
clients. It’s been a massive
opportunity – we’ve worked
with some really great names
in the industry. I also love the
diversity of the talents of the
fellow team members – it
ranges through all ranks from
stylist to salon owner. I love
colour as it gives you the ability
to take a really nice cut to the
next level, you can choose
colour to accent focal points,
soften cuts or just make a
strong, bold cut look super
shiny and healthy.

Andy Smith of

CLUBSTAR
SPONSOR 2012
Andy Smith, UK Ambassador of Schwarzkopf and Art Director at
John Carne, and Senior Stylist Mari Ajakainen take to the stage
to showcase the Schwarzkopf Essential Looks Flux Collection at
the Schwarzkopf ASK Education Academy.
The evening consisted of a series of live
demonstrations on stage with 6 models,
displaying everything from avant-garde hair ups
through to strong haircuts and beautiful colours
presented to an audience of ClubStar members.
A VT was also shown of the spring/summer trends
and it was an inspiring and personal evening with
Andy presenting and working on his models
throughout.
Lisa Rylett from KJM Salons commented, “As always
Andy did an amazing show, jam packed with lots
of vibrant and inspiring demos. He crafted some
cropped styles with simple techniques that were very
effective. Alongside Andy on stage was Mari,
sculpting long tresses into stylish updos, a feast
for the eye”.
Rebecca Strange from Q Hair & Beauty in
Chichester added “Andy was amazing, really down
to earth and friendly. He was full of useful tips in
styling from turning a funky look into a salon friendly
hairstyle. Loved the styles and hair up. He taught me
a lot about styling and keeping everything fun. Really
good night and inspirational. Thank you!”

Strong bold lines
for ClubsStar from
HOB Artistic Team
ClubStar members were treated to yet another great
show from the HOB Artistic Team. Eclectic trio, Darren
Bain, Faye Turner and Jake Ungar demonstrated why
HOB are a salon group at the top of their game.
CLUBSTAR
SPONSOR 2012
“My team came away from the HOB event having learned a lot
about how they work and what amazing styles can be achieved.
They felt very welcomed and at home and were bursting with new
techniques on their return.” Kerry Mather owner KJM Salons
The presentation of fantastic haircuts offered up all the usual
style and finesse HOB are famed for, whilst always delivering
a new angle to work with. Within the strong bold lines highly
recognisable as HOB, a softer more feminine texture was
incorporated within the perimeter of the haircuts to allow a
more wearable, client-friendly look to fit in with the current
street fashions.
The team decided to keep the theme as simple but highly
effective, proving that strong technique coupled with the more
disciplined approach often produces an overall more
comprehensive look, be it on clientele or in more creative work.
The evening reminded us all that the fundamentals
are key to any haircut we strive to achieve.
Great evening – nice mix of cut and colour.
Both informative and inspiring.
Jessie D'elaine – Michael Barnes
The HOB Artistic Team put on a great inspirational
show; demonstrating their latest techniques in cut
and colour. As always the standard of quality was
excellent and kept the audience mesmerised with
their impressive array of show-stopping models.
Everyone came away buzzing and filled with
inspiration to bring back to the salon.
Arash Moghaddami – Karine Jackson
Catherine Gray – Hug8
My team who attended really loved the evening.
They returned to the salon so inspired and so excited
– proving that ClubStar membership is worth every
penny! One of the team was so inspired she had
decided that this is definitely the type of hairdresser
she wants to be!
Rom Sartipi - Charles Worthington
FM 18
The evening with HOB was of course nothing but great. The team
went through quite a few different colour and cutting techniques,
techniques which I had never attempted and since then I have
been inspired to try new things in the salon. The main thing, or
person should I say that I found inspiring was Jake – he’s a
similar age to me, has been qualified roughly the same amount of
time as I have and is doing so well! That to me is a role model.
He explained things as if he wasn't a hairdresser teaching a room
full of hairdressers – he was very easy to follow and full of
innovation and interest.

My alarm goes off at...
7am every morning and it always takes me by surprise!
The first thing I do when I wake up...
Gather my thoughts then armed with an energising Darphin
cream, I head for the shower.
On an average day I wear...
I like to dress neat but chic for the salon: usually an Armani skirt,
Wolford black tights, Nicole Farhi top and I love Jimmy Choos.
My skincare and makeup regime consists of...
My essential salon products are...
Blowdry my hair, apply Environ eye cream and moisturiser then
get going with MAC makeup – it’s my favourite.
I couldn’t get by without using Schwarzkopf’s OSiS+ Upload,
Style Shifters 1 Liquid Texturising Spray and [3D]MENSION
Molding Wax.
Before walking out of the front door...
Grab my phone, iPad and make sure the dogs (I have two
Weimeraners) are safely at rest in their beds in the kennels.
I leave the salon at...
It changes every day but sometimes not before 9pm; I’m always
finding things to do.
After leaving home...
After dropping off my three kids at school – Kyla who’s eight,
Maddox who’s six and Sienna who’s three – it takes about 40
minutes to drive to the salon which gives me time to make least four
much needed phone calls in the car (safely via Bluetooth).
My favourite way to wind down after work is...
Brandy and diet coke on ice, drunk through a straw.
If I’m staying in I’ll wear...
Lounge wear all the way for me... onesies preferably.
On my way to work...
Make a mental list of things to do that day. At the moment
I’m sorting out the shoot for the new Big Brother commercial
– we’ll be doing all of the models’ hair for it.
And if I’m going out I’ll wear...
On my to-do list today...
Cleanse off my makeup using Liz Earle and a whizz round with
my Braun electric tooth brush.
Glam up in something delicious by Vivienne Westwood.
My bedtime beauty / grooming regime is...
Not too challenging a list today: update some contractual lists
and buy new uniforms for the salon assistants.
The last thing I do before I go to sleep is...
I spend the morning...
Doing my clients; I have a very loyal clientele – a very varied and
interesting bunch of people!
Make sure I’ve closed my iPad.
I dream about...
Sunshine!
For lunch I usually eat...
Nothing too heavy, usually something light such as a tuna
sandwich.
My perfect Sunday consists of...
A classic Sunday roast – preferably cooked by someone else!

The Fellowship Scholarship
in Association with
Sassoon Academy
is awarded to
Joe Kinerman-Daltrey!
At the Fellowship for British Hairdressing Luncheon
& Awards it was President, Mark Creed’s honour to
announce Fellowship history in the making.
In celebration of Fellowship Patron of Honour, Vidal Sassoon
CBE, the Fellowship Sassoon Bursary was to be presented to a
young deserving hairdresser. Announcing the Scholarship Mark
commented: “There is no finer beginning for anyone wanting to
make their first mark on the world of hair design.”
16 hopefuls attended the interview which took place at Sassoon
Head Office on Wednesday 16th May. Each applicant was asked
to bring their portfolio and answered questions about themselves,
their hairdressing passions and ambitions to a panel of judges
including Fellowship Chancellor Gary France, Fellowship’s
Ann Herman, Hairdressers Journal Publisher Jayne Lewis-Orr,
Professional Hairdresser Publisher Nicola Shannon, Pr for
Denman Jacki Wadeson of JWPR and Edward Darley from
Sassoon. The winner was Joe Kinerman-Daltrey of Strangeways,
Leigh-on-Sea, Essex.
Speaking on behalf of the Fellowship Gary France said:
“The criteria for the scholarship was threefold: to find someone
with a minimum of 4 years experience on the salon floor working
within a Fellowship salon, have a strong foundation in haircutting
and be in a position to take a 4 week sabbatical with the full
support of their employer.”
Edward Darley speaking on behalf of Sassoon added:
“The Sassoon Scholarship has been developed and designed to
be contemporary, relevant and forward thinking. The course will be
honed and will be delivered with passion, commitment and
technical excellence at the Sassoon Academy, ensuring that not
only will Joe gain real commercial skills, he will also take away a
piece of the culture that created Sassoon.”
The month long course will cover all the bases needed to provide
Joe with a fast track to hairdressing success. The nature and
content of each stage will develop as Joe progresses, however a
few things will remain constant in that he will receive personal
guidance and mentoring from a Sassoon Academy teacher
throughout all the work sessions.
FM 20
“I never thought I’d be the one
chosen for the Scholarship –
and being chosen by some of
the top people in the industry
just makes it even better. I just
hope I can do them, the
Fellowship and the industry
proud.” Joe Kinerman-Daltrey
On hearing the news of the scholarship Joe commented: “I never
thought I’d be the one chosen for the Scholarship – and being
chosen by some of the top people in the industry just makes it
even better. I just hope I can do them, the Fellowship and the
industry proud”.
Joe’s boss, Martyn Holmes of Strangeways said of Joe's win:
“Joe has worked tirelessly since joining Strangeways five years
ago, constantly striving for excellence and never once resting on
his laurels. Joe has high aspirations and I have no doubt that he
will grab this opportunity and run with it. I am excited to watch
Joe's career flourish. He is certainly set for great things!”
Apart from the Sassoon Salon Intensive 4 week course at the
Sassoon Academy in London, Joe also received a Denman tool
roll and associated pr opportunities with an estimated value of
£10,000.
The Fellowships thanks go to Sassoon Academy, Denman

DARREN READ HAS
THE X-FACTOR FOR
FINALIST LAURA
WHITE!
Darren Read from seanhanna,
Wimbledon was personally requested
by X-Factor finalist, Laura White to
style hair hair for her debut music
video, shot at Elstree Film Studio,
Cathedral.
“The music had a melancholy feel to it so
I worked closely with Laura to create a
grunge effect with an element of
elegance. I backcombed the crown
section to create height and a dishevelled
texture then tonged the hair, which was
blended into Balmain hair extensions to
give body – into groomed, tousled waves”
said Darren. The amalgamation of ‘rough’
and ‘smooth’ texture looked interesting
on screen and worked well with the
moody tones of Laura’s makeup and
clothes. Darren’s charm and skill for
creating amazing hair styles from concept
to reality really impressed Laura, who told
FM: “I loved working with Darren because
he totally understood the ambiance of the
video and was able to create a style which
reflected that. Continuity is vital in videos
in order to get the mood across on screen
for authenticity and Darren certainly had a
hand in that. I look forward to working with
him again on future projects.”
