Alpine now home to the state-sanctioned California Welcome Center
by Diana Saenger
C
ounty Super visor
Dianne Jacob along
with representatives
from the California Travel &
Tourism Commission (CTTC),
San Diego Convention &
Visitors Bureau (SDCVB) and
Viejas Tribal Council were on
hand Wednesday, March 17
to officially cut the ribbon on
the new California Welcome
Center in Alpine.
Formerly the San Diego East
Visitors Bureau, the 1,000-sq.
ft. California Welcome Center
is located in the Viejas Outlet
Center on Willows Road, the
original Historic Highway 80.
The idea to combine the two
visitor’s bureaus was an ongoing discussion for months.
“The Board Members of
both organizations discussed
this for months,” said Joe Terzi,
President and CEO of the San
Diego Convention & Visitors
Bureau. “We had been speaking about a more cooperative
effort for years.”
The new California Welcome Center, the first to be
established on Native American lands, will serve as an
important gateway to the more
than 8.9 million people who
annually travel on Interstate 8
into San Diego County. Terzi
said the Viejas location was a
good fit for the merge.
“First, there was already a
visitor’s center there,” he said.
“Making it a visitor’s center for
the state was ideal because of
the I-8 highway. There are a lot
of people coming to San Diego
from Arizona and other places
so it’s a major artery.”
Alpine’s California Welcome
Center joins a network of
14 official welcome centers
throughout the state includ-
ing one along Interstate 5 in
Oceanside. Traffic to the Center is expected to be approximately 60,000 guests annually,
according to CTTC.
Terzi said the Center will be
promoted by signage visible
to both east and west bound
traffic driving by Viejas. “This is
a win-win for East County and
the entire San Diego region,”
he said. “Not only will the
Center increase referrals for
hotels, restaurants, attractions
and other facilities throughout
San Diego County, but it will
also enhance the offerings of
the Viejas Outlet Center and
the surrounding businesses
and unique visitor offerings in
the area.”
The California Welcome
Center is open daily yearround with the exception of
Thanksgiving, Christmas and
New Year’s Day. Those who
stop in will find free brochures,

American arts, crafts and jewelry, educational books on the

For Health’s Sake
Happiness, health and hypnotherapy
motions? Perhaps now is the
time to turn your direction to
that passion long forgot. What
is holding you back from this
pursuit? Do you need more
motivation or confidence to
progress?
By Judy Callihan Warfield
A
very wise man once
told me there are 3
simple keys to obtaining happiness.
1. Something to do.
2. Someone to love.
3. Something to hope for.
Now, this would appear
to be a very simple recipe to
achieve that elusive thing we
call happiness. However, are
we doing something we love
to do or just going through the
MARCH 18, 2010
Someone to love. How are
your relationships with friends,
family, and significant others?
Do you have a lot of guilt or
feelings of unresolved issues
with those people nearest and
dearest to you? Have you
been able to move forward
from relationships with an
open heart which would allow new loves in? Are you
beliefs that if you were hurt in
the past that all of your future
relationships will go the same
negative way?
Something to hope for.
That goal or vision of that
one special thing keeps you
moving forward past obstacles
and difficulties. This is especially true if you are battling
poor health. Our beliefs are
our biology. When you have
a sense of hopelessness or
distress your immune system
begins to break down. Now
don’t use this as another way
to beat yourself up or feel guilt
if there is an onset of poor
health. I would never suggest
that someone has brought on
their disease. But, be aware
that life is not a fairy tale life
where there are never any
difficulties or overwhelming
challenges. There will always
be the highs and lows in all of
our lives. Regardless of the
diagnosis you still have the
ability to choose to live each
day to it’s fullest. Remember,
often it is the intention, not the
outcome, that truly determines
if it should be considered
successful. Regardless of
the ultimate outcome, the
purpose is to focus on healing
and putting back into your
life what makes you whole
again. This focused intention
gives your back a sense of
empowerment in your life.
Curing is up to your medical
practitioners; healing is your
part in recovery.

Horse Sense
by Dr. Donald Adema
M
rs. A and I are quietly catching up after a busy day in
the office and on the hospital campus. Dinner has been
happily and rapidly consumed and had been prepared by yours
truly. The national news satellite stations are being rotated to
gain a more objective view of the population’s view of the heatlh
care bill as it approaches another “final” vote. Amazingly, there
seems to be a common thread of opinion as to the basic foundations for the yes or no vote.
All stations or networks present the voter concerns as firstly
the cost and secondly the pro-life platform. How we wished that
the order was reversed. Cost is always an important concern.
A concern that the American ingenuity has consistently found
a way to problem solve and triumph. That, of course, assumes
that the present government is supportive of the compassionate
capitalistic environment that has made the USA what it is today.
We will not go there.
More importantly ( number one ), can or should life be
measured in dollars or in relation to the national debt? Are the
ethics of whether life begins on conception, at eight months
of gestational develpment, at birth, or at one year of age an
area that involves Congressional debate or funding (control)?
What is the basic platform? Is it supporting life at all levels of
development. Or, is it assuming the task of deciding what lives
or must be deleted for the sake of the greater good? We are
more than afraid.

Walking the dog
A
woman was flying from Melbourne to Brisbane. Unexpectedly, the plane was diverted to Sydney along the way.
The flight attendant explained that there would be a delay, and
if the passengers wanted to get off the aircraft the plane would
re-board in 50 minutes.
Everybody got off the plane except one lady who was blind. A man
had noticed her as he walked by and could tell the lady was blind because her guide dog lay quietly underneath the seats in front of her
throughout the entire flight.
He could also tell she had flown this very flight before
because the pilot approached her, and calling her by name, said,
‘Kathy, we are in Sydney for almost an hour. Would you like to
get off and stretch your legs?’
The blind lady replied, ‘No thanks, but maybe Buddy would
like to stretch his legs.’
Picture this: All the people in the gate area came to a complete
standstill when they looked up and saw the pilot walk off the plane
with a guide dog! The pilot was even wearing sunglasses.
People scattered. They not only tried to change planes, but they
were trying to change airlines!
Remember...Things aren’t always as they appear to be.

I was eager to ask many questions about this fascinating sport

every one of them.
D. S. How important is the
venue where you play?
Ewa L. What a great question! Anyone who completes
knows how important that is.
If you’re uncomfortable in the
venue it’s hard to really be there
in the moment, and once you
lose your concentration you’re
in big trouble. Feeling comfortable in the room has a lot to
do with it.
D. S. Do the tables make a
difference?
Ewa L. The table we use depends on the individual sponsor
of that event. At this level we
can adjust our game according
to the tables. The competition
is more a matter of who has
worked hard, paid their dues,
and who has the talent and is
ready to win.
D. S. The Women’s Pro Billiard competition returns every
year to Viejas. Why is this a
good event site?
Ewa L. This is our 14th year
here, and we love it. The area
is so beautiful. The people at
Ayers are so accommodating.
And the staff here at Viejas is
phenomenal.
D. S. How long do these
players typically stay with the
tour?
Ewa L. We have new players
every year. Our top 32 women
are exempt players who are
automatically invited every
year. Then there are regional
events and tours around the
country and Canada where
players qualify to get on the
tour. We also have invites from
Asia and Europe
D. S. This job requires a lot
of travel. How do you balance
that with your home life?
Ewa L. It’s difficult. I’m sponsored by Brunswick Billiards so I
appear at a lot of corporate and
charity events. I travel between
175 to 200 days a year. My
husband, Mitchell and I both
do color commentary on ESPN.
But I often bring my daughter
on tour when I travel so I stay
close with my family.
D. S. You were born in Sweden and I read you gained and
interest in billiards after watching your brother.
Ewa L. Yes. My brother is
three years older than me but
had no interest in helping his
younger sister. But the second
time I played I told my parents
that’s what I wanted to do.
There were no pro teams at the
time, but they knew how committed I was so they encouraged
me. I was so dedicated that
when I played if I missed a
shot I would do homework until
the next game. They figured I’d
grow out it, and that there was
no way for a woman to make
a living at this. But then after

someday he can advise others

For insiders looking in, they
realize that all the kids in middle
school are somewhat geeks. At
Greg’s school there’s a moldy
piece of cheese on the blacktop
that everyone avoids like the
plague. If someone accidentally touches it he must touch
another classmate to get rid of
the curse.
The movie has a great cast.
Gordon (Santa Buddies) is
perfect as the misfit trying to
find his own place, but getting
up every time he’s knocked
down. Capron is terrific and
quite believable as Rowley
who is innocent and just wants
to have fun regardless of
what his school mates think.
Capron has talent and will
certainly be a great asset for
more children’s roles.
The more Greg and Rowley try to fit in, the more
they stand out as misfits.
Rowley doesn’t feel this, but
Greg does. Greg pulls out his
brother’s yearbook and looks
at who was most popular
and sets out to mimic those
students. He decides to dress
up in a shirt and tie, only he
doesn’t realize Rowley does it
too; so they both get laughed
at. They join the Safety Patrol
to get some positive attention.
That back fires when Rowley
gets into trouble for a misdeed
that Greg did. Once the truth
comes out Rowley decides
Greg is not his true friend.

F
ew kids have probably not heard of the
Diary of a Wimpy Kid
book series. Since author Jeff
Kinney released the first book,
kids have sought out each
new addition. The series has
already sold 28 million books,
and now the first one has hit
the big screen.
Pre-teen Greg Heffley (Zachary Gordon) is facing his worst
nightmare – middle school.
He can appreciate that his
big brother Rodrick (Devon
Bostick) has offered him sound
advice about what not to do.
Yet this is the brother who
wakes Greg up on Sunday
morning telling him he’s late
for school and is also part of a
weird rock band.
While Greg starts to put his
thoughts and problems down
in a diary his mother gave
him, he’s not facing the new
school year alone. He has his
best friend Rowley Jefferson
(Robert Capron). However,
within the first few days at
school Greg realizes Rowley is
considered a real geek among
his classmates. Greg hangs in
there with him and the two find
Greg’s last resort is when he
competes to do cartoons in the
school newspaper. It’s the last
straw when Rowley’s cartoon is
selected instead. Greg can only
stand by and watch Rowley
become popular while kids still
make fun of Greg.
There are many funny moments in this movie where kids
laughed out loud. But there’s
also an undercurrent of many
good elements. Middle school
seems to be the most difficult
years for students and Diary
of a Wimpy Kid brings a lot
of these situations to life but
somehow shows kids they are
not life and death situations.
Greg never stops pursuing his
goal to be popular and continues to keep up his journal so
Many of the major kids’
roles were well served. One
character is a girl who stays
under the bleachers as her
way to hide from middle
school abuse. She’s played
fine by Chloë Moretz but her
character never seemed to
add anything to the plot. I also
didn’t buy into Steve Zahn’s
role as Greg’s dad. He acts
as irrational as the middleschoolers.
Diary of a Wimpy Kid is an
imaginative way to focus on
serious problems and have
fun while doing it. Adults and
children will find if funny, and
the adults will appreciate that
everything comes out right in
the end.

‘She’s Out of My League’ is another mediocre romantic comedy
Review by Michael Black
S
he’s Out of My
League has some comedic moments, but
basically it’s another movie
relying on immature humor
and juvenile dialogue to tell
its story. Toilet humor used to
be reserved for movies with
little plot and characters who
behave badly. Now those
elements are showing up in
romantic comedy. Why?
Kirk Kettner (Jay Baruchel)
works at the Pittsburg airport
as a security guard. His only
ambition in life is to get back
together with his ex-girlfriend,
Marnie (Lindsay Sloane). But
then he meets Molly (Alice
Eve), a professional event
organizer who is both sexy
and smart and surprisingly
interested in Kirk as well. His
family and friends are surprised
and shocked to see Kirk dating
someone so out of his league.
Just as things seem perfect for
Kirk, he has an embarrassing
moment in front of Molly’s
family and has doubts about
their relationship.
Casting of the movie is hit
and miss. Baruchel and Eve
are great in the lead roles.
Baruchel fits the bill as a
low self-esteemed geek who
constantly doubts himself.
Eve portrays Molly, as a “10”
according to Stainer (T. J.
Miller), Kirk’s best friend.
With his big buck teeth, curly
hair and a slight slur, Miller
reminded me of John Heder’s
infamous 2004 character in
Napoleon Dynamite. I think
this was a poor attempt at
recreating that character but
ultimately is a miss anyway due to Stainer’s vulgarity. Kirk’s mother (Debra Jo
Rupp) was a nice addition to
the story but underutilized.

S
uzuki has decided to

Kizashi comes in a four door
configuration with a choice
of two different 4-cylinder
engines, one produces 180
horsepower at 6000 rpm and
a torque reading of 170 (lb-ft)
at 4000 rpm. The other option
has little difference, a jump
of 5 horsepower and nothing else. A 6-speed manual
standard in three of the eight
different models are available
as well as a CVT transmission (Continuously Variable
Transmission) in five of the
eight models offered as standard equipment. The eight
different models are: S, SE,
S AWD, GTS, SE AWD, SLS,
GTS AWD, and SLS AWD, that
is a lot of models to choose
from! To help figure it out, if
a CVT transmission is chosen,
the 180 horsepowered engine
is added, and if the manual is
opted, the 185 horsepowered
engine is added.

also a navigation, back up

My tester was a GTS with a
manual 6-speed transmission,
which I really liked how it
shifted at slow and fast shifts.
I’m not a big fan of a CVT
transmission, personally I think
it’s boring, but it does what
it is set out to do and that is
simplify the transmission world,
give the consumer fuel mileage
they can live with. On the nonAWD, fuel economy numbers
of 20-29 in the city and 23-30
on the open road are reached.
With the AWD model then the
numbers will read, 22-29, not
much difference, but it really all
depends on your right foot!
One point worth mentioning
is if the All Wheel drive is opted
the driver will have the ability
to turn off the All Wheel Drive
if not needed, this will give a
few more drops of fuel mileage.
Of course all the other standard
features, power windows and
door locks, trunk and gas door
release are included. The back
seat was a little small, but if the
kids are small, no problem.
The Kizashi GTS is well
equipped with very comfortable bucket seats with power
for the driver and manual
adjustments for the passenger,
no seat heaters in this model,
brrrr! Could have used them
here lately. The car was easy

being lucky to get endorsements
it became my career.
D. S. Did you learn to play on
your own or take lessons?
Ewa L. I’ve had a few
mentors, but mostly learned
on my own the hard way.
Players back then didn’t want
to give you advice because
then you could beat them. It’s
a different sport today. Four
of us, including my husband,
Mitchell, started the Women’s
Pro Billiard Association tour.
Now that billiards is a regular
sport on TV, it’s not uncommon for a girl to want to play
pool. Grandma buys her a
pool stick and she goes to the
rec center or reads a book like
mine or watches a video, and
she’s off.
D. S. Competition and trick
shots are two separate things,
but you compete in both.
Ewa L. Yes I do. Trick shot
events have become really big
over time especially in Europe
and on ESPN. I do trick shots
mostly at corporate events or
the opening of billiard rooms;
it’s entertaining. Here at the
tour it’s nine ball.
D. S. How does the sport
affect players physically?
Ewa L. It is a very physical
sport if you play it long enough.
I have tendentious in the elbow,
and have had neck surgery
because of certain repeated
moments.
D. S. A lot of the attraction to
this sport is the beautiful women
who compete. How does that
play out in the game?
Ewa L. It’s always an aspect
of the game. That’s why when
I appeared on the David Letterman show I wore a business suit
because I wanted to emphasize
it’s a business. We’re lucky we
have so many beautiful women
in this sport. It’s part of the business, but we don’t care. We’re
out there to play a good game
and win; so it takes more than
beauty to get ahead, and we are
competitive.
D. S. You’ve done this for
many years, is it still fun for
you?
Ewa L. In order to play well
you have to practice four to
eight hours a day. When you’re
younger it’s easy because you
love it so much. As you get
older you might wake up and

say it’s a nice day I’ll like to
go down to the beach or hang
with my kids. So its work to set
that time aside. But it’s still fun
for me.
In addition to winning many
titles Laurance has appearance
on the cover of the New York
Times Magazine and has been
featured in numerous national
publications. She is a frequent
guest on television shows such
as Late Night with David Letterman, The Today Show, The

Dear Dr. Luauna
am a Christian, yet I am fighting
I
depression. I cannot seem to
get a handle on things, as soon as I
wakeup in the morning; I am overcome by feelings of hopelessness. I
can barely make it through the day
and I all I want to do is sleep! Signed,
Depressed
Dear Depressed,
You can be set free from depression, it is a strategy of the enemy, who
comes to steal, kill and destroy (John 10:10), but Jesus came
to give you life, and life more abundantly. The devil is stealing
your time, killing your joy and destroying your effectiveness as
a Christian. You must fight! Depression is caused by anxiety
(Proverbs 12:25), as a Christian you do not have to be afraid
because Jesus did not give us a spirit of fear, but of love, power,
and soundness of mind. (2 Timothy 1:7). His perfect love for
you casts out all fear (I John 4:18).
Every day when you wake up, thank God for the good
things; thank Him for your family, your health, and remind
yourself of all God’s blessings in your life. Write down some
key Bible verses to help you, whenever you feel depressed,
read those scriptures to yourself out loud. There is power in
the Word of God, meditate on good things only (Philippians
4:8). Your mind is the battlefield, “casting down arguments
and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge
of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience
of Christ.” (2 Corinthians 10:5). You will notice as each day
goes by, the Holy Spirit will renew your hope, Jesus loves
you and will help you come out of this darkness. I will be
praying for you!

Our Best Friends
Puppy is not housetrained any more … ask a trainer
by Nan Arthur,
CDBC, CPDT, KPACTP
Dear Trainer,
have had my Chihuahua
for a little over 4 months.
I got her around 7 weeks
old, and began potty training
right away (litter box) and
although it was a tough, after
2 months she figured it out. I
used to fence her in the kitchen
when I was away from home
leaving her plenty of room,
food, water and chew toys to
play with. In addition, after
a few trial days of letting her
free to roam the entire house
I would come home to find
no accidents, this was so for a
month and a half. I then moved
out of that apartment into a
house. Suddenly, I had to retrain her all over again, except
this time no matter what I did
nothing has worked. It’s getting
worse! At first she would pee
on the carpet, now she’s peeing
on my bed! I confine her in a
large area in my room, (tile
floors) away from the carpet
with a large exercise fence,
and just like before I would put
toys, food, water and plenty of
space and sleeping area, but
she just refuses to use the litter
box. I don’t know what to do
anymore, every morning I still
ask her to potty in the box, and
she goes when I tell her to, but
the second I’m not around she
goes everywhere else. I would
appreciate any help at all.
Signed,
Potty Blues
I
Dear Potty Blues,
A couple of things caught my
attention in your email, which
may need to be addressed to
help you along with successful
housetraining. Your puppy
is still very young, and the
fact that you had some good
success at your old place is
wonderful, so pat yourself on
the back for getting that far in
such a short time.
You didn’t say how long it’s
been since you moved into
the new place, but I would
assume not that long. Dogs
don’t generalize behaviors such
as housetraining very well, so
you were correct to “start all
over” with her housetraining.
Dogs don’t really care where
they relieve themselves, the
bed is just as good at the floor,
and until you give her some
guidance and training this is
likely to continue.
To strengthen that point, you
said she is going in her litterbox
when you direct her, and I’ll bet
that you praise, and reward her
for her success. This is good
information for your puppy
to receive.
However, when you are
not around to guide her, like
most puppies that age, they
are still building bladder and
bowel muscles and, frankly,
puppies tend to get busy playing and just forget to go in the
designated place. Therefore,
when the urge hits, anywhere is
convenient if there is no one to
help her find the litter box.
You are going to need a plan
and some time to show your
puppy the new rules of the litter
box in this house.
will get better if you stick with
your training.
Typically, you should plan to
take your puppy to the potty
area at least every 1-2 hours in
the beginning stages of housetraining, and always be willing
to adjust this if your puppy is
having accidents within this
time schedule.
How do you know when
to take her to the litter
box?
In the beginning, young
puppies won’t know how to
tell you that they need to use
the litterbox so you will have
to watch them for the tell-tale
signs.
Setting an alarm is a good
reminder if you think you will
have trouble remembering.
Young puppies should always be monitored either in
a crate or an ex-pen like you
are using or at least in your
visual range at all times to
make sure that they don’t have
accidents.
Size and age considerations
The younger the puppy and/
or the smaller the puppy, will
add some variables to housetraining. Puppies under 10
weeks will need to be taken out
more frequently because of the
immaturity of their brains, their
bladders and their bowels. Toy
or tiny breed dogs often need
more opportunities to go out in
the beginning since they have
tiny bladders that can only
expand so far. This should be
considered, not only during
housetraining, but for longterm confinement as well.
The good news is that a
week of practice can make
a world of difference when
housetraining a young puppy
or a tiny dog, so don’t fret, it
ADOPT-A-PET
Darling Chewy, a 6-year old Chow-Chow blend is 40 pounds of
unconditional love. He needs a special adopter, because Chewy is deaf.
This doesn’t slow him down at all! He loves playing with toys and having
his ears scratched. Chewy is available for adoption through FOCAS

adoption fee includes license, vaccinations, microchip, and neuter. For

Here are some of the signs
that your puppy needs to go
out:
• Sniffing the ground
• Abruptly stop playing or
chewing
• Sniffing in circles
• Whining or barking
• Play biting more
·
• Going to or toward the door
• Starting to squat
• Scratching at crate door
• Barking at door
• “Zooming” around the
house at breakneck speed
Once you start to recognize
these signs, it will make it
easier to get her to her box.
One of the most essential
components of successful
housetraining is to place your
puppy in the litter box during
the initial training. Equally as
important is to have her on a
leash right from the beginning
so she is not able to wander off
and “forget” what she is doing.
Once you see that your puppy
really has the idea of what
she is supposed to be doing,
you no longer have to use the
leash, but you will still want to
go with her in the early stages
of housetraining.

San Diego County
Giving your puppy a highvalue food treat after she has
finished eliminating begins the
process of building bladder and
bowel muscles by teaching her
that waiting to go in the designated potty area will result in a
high value food reward. If she
goes somewhere else, the result
should be neutral, (in other
words, don’t make a fuss over
it) so she learns that it’s much
better to “hold it,” (building
muscle) and go to litter box
since going there results in the
yummy treat! You can also
add play or getting to go outside for a walk when she has
gone in the litterbox, to make
the reward of going there that
much more memorable.
Good luck!
