COMMUNITY HEALTH & JUNGARNI VISIT
The first day of the school holidays was a big day at NingkuwumNgamayuwu. We had 14 children visit with their mothers and
grandmothers throughout the morning. Sandra from Jungarni
Jutiya took this opportunity to talk about loan applications and
Angeline from Community Health discussed sexually transmitted
illnesses.
The group then broke for morning tea to say farewell to Marney.
After morning tea Elise from Community Health told us about the
Mooditj program she attended in Perth and how much fun the
new Mooditj education technique was to learn. We agreed for
Elise and Angeline to come back to Ningkuwum-Ngamayuwu to
tell us more about the Mooditj program and to discuss how best
to present important sexual health messages to the community.
MOVIE TIME AT LILWUNS
A lot of action takes place during our morning sessions at Lilwuns
Playgroup but on a particularly hot morning the children decided
to kick back in comfort and enjoy a screening of ‘Milo and Otis’.
This is a rare sight to see!

SCHOOL HOLIDAYS AT LILWUN’S PLAYGROUP
You would have thought you were walking into Flinders Street
Station in Melbourne over the school holidays with the hustle and
bustle at Lilwun’s Playgroup.
rd
th
On Tuesday 7 October we had 16 kids and 11 adults, including
Vanessa with 4 beautiful children from the Halls Creek Children’s
Hostel, visiting Ningkuwum-Ngamayuwu.
On Friday 3 October we had 15 children and 6 adults. The staff
at Lilwuns did well in organising the morning activities for the
various age groups. The boys gathered on the railway mat and
played well together on a train set while most of the other
children played outside.
The art and craft activity for the day was to make flower gardens
out of popsicle sticks. The children had a great time making them.
For the rest of the day everyone enjoyed playing with all the
activities set up in the room and had fun playing in the garden.
It was a great day at the centre. We love having so many children
with family visiting us!

HEALTHY LUNCHBOXES
We were lucky to have Tobi Farquhar, Nutritionist from Boab
Health, visit Ningkuwum-Ngamayuwu for a second time to give
parents useful hints on how to pack a healthy lunchbox for their
children.
This session also included a race to see who is the fastest in
making a healthy lunchbox. Jocelyn Ejai, NingkuwumNgamayuwu receptionist made us proud - she was the fastest on
the day. Mums the word on who was the slowest!!
L to R: Debbie, Tobi and Jocelyn
The best part of the workshop was we all had a good laugh and all
contestants got to enjoy their healthy lunchbox after their race.
Can’t wait for Tobi’s next visit!
SCHOOL HOLIDAY VOLUNTEERS
Over the school holidays (6-10 Oct) two beautiful grade 7 girls
came into Ningkuwum-Ngamayuwu and asked if we needed some
help. Of course we jumped at the chance in having extra hands
and put them to work. Sandi Rivers and Shakana Garstone did a
great job answering the telephone and taking on the photocopier
in the office. They also designed posters, prepared activities in
Lilwun’s Playgroup and volunteered at the Blue Light Disco in the
th
garden area on Friday 10 October.
They both promised to come back next school holidays.
Thanks for volunteering your time over the holidays and for all
your hard work Shakana and Sandi. The staff and children at
Ningkuwum-Ngamayuwu really appreciated it.

MEN’S CIRCLE
th
nd
On Wednesday 8 October, Ningkuwum-Ngamayuwu staff
attended the official opening of the Kimberley Training Institute
Halls Creek Campus Upgrade by Dr Kim Hames, Deputy Premier
and Minister for Training and Workforce development. It was
great to see so many community members at the event.
The men’s circule met again on Wednesday 22 at NingkuwumNgamayuwu. Good to see a regular group of men networking
and feeling comfortable to discuss issues at the centre.
The official opening of the campus upgrade did not stop the men’s
circle scheduled to meet same time at Ningkuwum-Ngamayuwu
as the men decided to hold a gathering after the KTI opening.
PCYC BLUE LIGHT DISCO
So the wet season has arrived and there is no better way to kick it
off than with a Disco!!
th
On Friday 10 October 2014, Halls Creek Police in partnership
with Youth Services and Ningkuwum-Ngamayuwu, held an
awesome Blue Light Disco. The mood was set with the flashing
lights and smoke machine, coupled with an amazing venue
allowing us to dance the night away under the stars!
It was great to see a lot of parents in attendance showing their
support and ‘volunteering’ to hit the dance floor.
There were many awesome dancers in the group but the moves
on Billy Long, Trayvon Stretch, Fred Mosquito, Zenia Dempsey,
Nikki Foynes and Phennettah Cox were definitely a stand out!
We hope you enjoyed the free sausage sizzle!! There is plenty
more to come, thanks to an amazing donor. Di Tucker you’re a
star!

We also had lots of prizes to give away due to the ongoing
sponsorship by Halls Creek Electrical, Halls Creek IGA, Kimberley
Hotel, Best Western and Poinciana Road House.
We would like to say thank you to all of the amazing volunteers
that made this event happen and to DJ Jake Hay and DJ Edem
Edusei for keeping us all entertained.
We look forward to seeing you at our next Blue Light Disco on 14
November 2014 at Ningkuwum-Ngamayuwu.

COMMUNITY GATHERING
NEURO DEVELOPMENT CLINIC
On Wednesday 15 October Ningkuwum-Ngamayuwu held its
monthly community gathering. Attendees: Malcolm Edwards
(Shire President), Robin McNamee, Josephine Hart, Florence Long,
Lulu Trangalina, Jocelyn Ejai, Flora Ahchoo, Bonnie Deegan, Zenya
Dempsey (12yo), Sharlene Hargraves, Janice Hargraves, Angeline
Bedford, Jessica Bradshaw, Millie Hill, Virginia O’Neil, Bonnie
Edwards (Deputy Chair, KLC), Jody Bedford, Carolyn McAdam, Ian
Trust (Wunan Chair), Nick Thomas (Wunan CEO), Brenda Garstone
(Wunan Empowered Communities), Narelle Ogilvie, Sascha Ogilvie
and Maria Lovison (minute taker).
We visited Ningkuwum-Ngamayuwu on the 15 of October to
hold a Neurodevelopmental clinic. The clinic helps families see
different health specialists at the same time to help their
children. It is great to hold it at the centre because we get to see
the children interacting with others and how they are learning to
play and develop. It is such a friendly environment which helps
members from the community feel comfortable.
th
The main focus of the gathering was to receive feedback from the
Halls Creek community about Ningkuwum-Ngamayuwu and its
programs. Everyone appeared happy the way the centre was
running.
Group discussions centred on:
 technology for children in After School Care;
 Burraluba banner;
 activities for young people who are behaving;
 handwritten concerns from Stephen Barnes (Taylor Store);
 concerns that we as a society is not as caring and supportive
like the old days;
 unequal distribution of housing;
 suicide prevention – talk to families, show love and kindness
to each other;
 transitional housing - come with conditions;
 transitional housing meeting on Wednesday 22 October;
 Burraluba hostel feedback – increase transport;
 Wunan updates; and
th
Next community gathering on Wednesday 12 November.
WE MAKE OUR OWN FUN
Staff at Ningkuwum-Ngamayuwu understand our children need to
have fun indoors and out and the best fun outdoors is in the pool
under the newly erected shade sails out in the garden with the
sprinkler on.
th
The health team included Allied Health visiting from Kununurra
(Angela Studer – Speech Pathologist, Casey McRobb –
Occupational Therapist, Hannah Camp – Physiotherapist and Kylie
Hopkins – Dietitian), Paediatrician visiting from Perth (Dr Shveta
Patel) and Ellen Williamson – Child Health Nurse. We also had
some help from Angeline Bedford to pick families up for the
appointments. Lyn Hart (Learning Support from HCDHS) also
attended some appointments to share a school point of view. We
were very lucky that the Ear, Nose and Throat people were in
town that day, so we could send them straight up to check the
kids had healthy ears.

“PLAY SKILL” WORKSHOP
th
On Thursday 16 of October Angela Studer (Speech Pathologist)
and Casey McRobb (Occupational Therapist) visiting from
Kununurra Allied Health attended Ningkuwum-Ngamayuwu and
spoke to parents and families about the power of playing with
their little ones. They spoke about all the different skills kids can
learn when their parents are helping and encouraging them. The
best part was when mums shared how kids can learn so many
different things when they are helping make their weetbix in the
morning! Helping little ones make weetbix can help them learn:
talking, following instructions, using their hands, balancing,
getting strong, tasting, smelling, touching, looking and many
more skills!!!
Remember – anything can be play and learning if you are doing it
together!

VISIT TO WARLAWURRU PRIMARY SCHOOL
Every Thursday, Ningkuwum-Ngamayuwa visits the Kindergarten
at Warlawurru (Red Hill) primary school. The pre-school kids got
the opportunity to get familiar with the school setting which helps
children with the transition to school.
On Thursday the 17 October we had a great day at Warlawurru.
The morning started with songs and activities inside on the mat
followed by water activities and ball games outside in the
courtyard.
Big thank you to Rosie for a great day. Come along and join us
next time.
STORY TIME AT HALLS CREEK DHS LIBRARY
Every Tuesday, Ningkuwum-Ngamayuwa visit Halls Creek District
High School library for story time. It is a great opportunity for our
children in Lilwuns to enjoy the big library and to familiarise
themselves with big school environment.
th
On Tuesday 14 October we visited Jane at High School library for
some reading activities. The children had a good opportunity to
look at the books and listen to stories.
’
th
On Tuesday 20 of October Jane read a story called “Guess the
Baby”. The kids had a great time listening to the story and
interacting with all the pictures.
The aim of these visits is to make the transition to school a
seamless and exciting process.
We visit the Library every Tuesday after morning tea so please
come down to Lilwuns and join us in some library fun!

TRANSITIONAL HOUSING PROGRAM
On Wednesday 22 October, Department of Housing, Kimberley
Development Commission, Halls Creek Aboriginal Housing Group
and Wunan partnered in an information and sign up session at
Ningkuwum-Ngamayuwu. Much needed 15 new houses will be
allocated to the transitional housing program in Halls Creek.
Great turnout and some interesting discussions occurred around
the room after the presentations. Hopefully a few interested
participants signed up on the day.
SEXUAL HEALTH WORKSHOPS
th
th
On Monday 20 and 27 October Elise Tucker and Angeline
Bedford from Community Health came to NingkuwumNgamayuwu to talk about sexual health.
Participants were made aware of the STIs that are prevalent in
Halls Creek and how important it is for people to be tested. Elize
explained the consequences to our bodies when STIs are not
treated.
We talked about how people must overcome the “shame job”
when talking about STIs.
We all agreed we needed to continue to talk about sexual health.
Elize and Angeline will be visiting Ningkuwum-Ngamayuwu every
Monday morning starting 10:30am to talk about sexual health.
The group also agreed Ningkuwum-Ngamayuwu hold a special
th
ladies lunch will be held on Monday 17 November to workshop
sexual health. Bring a dish to share.
The group even talked about a sexual health summit next year dry
season (June/July). Watch this space!
