Suffolk Town and Country...
Suffolk’s towns are shaped by hundreds of years of
history. On a visit, discover Bury St Edmunds’ beautiful cathedral with its recently-built
tower, on the same spot where people have
worshipped for over 1,000 years.
See Lavenham’s medieval houses and guildhall built during the town’s heyday, and go to the races

horseracing to the town. In Ipswich see the iconic 1975 ‘Willis’ building reflecting its surroundings
in its curved black glass exterior, then step
into the 21st century with a visit to the
Waterfront and new university, or to Bury St Edmunds’ new shopping centre.

in Brandon Country Park. Cycle around

traditional villages.
Explore a Victorian
station then stroll
along a former railway
line at Clare Castle
Country Park. Walk at
Thornham, or watch birds
on the River Deben.
Swing through the trees on the high
ropes course, let the kids run free

...and wide open spaces
Bring your
binoculars and you
might spot a hobby
flying over the reeds
at Lakenheath Fen.
Look for dragonflies
at award-winning
Needham Lake.
With lakes and rivers reflecting big skies familiar from
Constable’s masterpieces; golden fields edged with wild
flowers; and heathland, fens and forests full of wildlife, it’s
no wonder that people choose Suffolk as a place to enjoy
the great outdoors.
Enjoy fishing in beautiful rural
surroundings, play a round of
golf, or ride horseback along
bridleways and forest tracks.
Hire a rowing boat at Brandon. Take
a river trip on the Orwell Lady past the
bustle of Ipswich docks to the peaceful
Orwell Estuary.
Watch an Anglo-Saxon
wood cutter at work at
West Stow or take your
little ones to meet the
lambs at Baylham Rare
Breeds Farm.
Pack a picnic and relax by
award-winning floral displays
in Bury St Edmunds’ Abbey
Gardens, or find a shady spot
under the trees at Nowton Park.
Escape to west Suffolk and the strange and beautiful landscape of the Brecks. Once covered
with heather, grasses, gorse and bracken, many acres are now planted with pine trees, while
the remaining stretches of heathland are vital habitats for wildlife such as the rare stone
curlew and woodlark.
Explore the beautiful River Waveney, bordering Norfolk, and find the largest remaining
river valley fen in England. From the source of the Stour in Mildenhall, follow the river as it
threads its way along Suffolk’s southern border through Clare, Long Melford and Sudbury to
Dedham and beyond.
Between these rivers, find a rural landscape dotted with hamlets, medieval villages, small
towns, historic churches and ancient woodland. Some of the very first English villages were
created here by Anglo Saxon settlers.
Explore the coast with its shingle beaches, seaside towns and fishing boats. Just behind the
coastline discover the rich birdlife of forest, farmland and heathland in a land intersected by
estuaries and salt marshes, home to waders and wildfowl.

An Anglo Saxon ship burial, a
medieval merchant’s house, or a
Georgian theatre...
On a short break
in Suffolk you’ll see
places which tell stories
about its heritage and
culture through many
different eras.
Time travel through history and explore a
Neolithic flint mine, an Anglo-Saxon village,
a Norman motte and bailey castle or a whole
medieval village made wealthy by the wool
trade. Meet Tudor ancestors at a stately home
or take in a play at a Georgian theatre. See
the ‘sport of kings’ at an historic racetrack or
visit a Victorian railway station.
See your reflection in the black glass as
you stroll past an iconic 20th century office
building. Fast forward to the present to see
a contemporary university building on the
rejuvenated Waterfront at Ipswich, or shop in
the futuristic dome of Bury St Edmunds’ arc
shopping centre.
H e r i t a g e
St Edmundsbury Cathedral is
on the site of the Benedictine Abbey which
housed the body of the martyred King
Edmund. The Cathedral’s magnificent
Gothic lantern tower was completed in
2005, using traditional materials and
methods.
C u l t u r e
...and stunning contemporary
architecture too!
Go back 75 years at Sutton Hoo to
take tea with Mrs Pretty and share the
excitement of uncovering Anglo Saxon
treasures beneath the burial mounds
beside her home.
Hear the memories of an
Edwardian cook or housemaid on
a visit to Ickworth or meet the
Tudors at regular Re-Creations of
life at Kentwell Hall.
King Charles II regularly visited
and stayed in Newmarket,
bringing his entourage for weeks
at a time to enjoy the horseracing.
Today people come here from all
over the world. On a visit you can
see Palace House, the surviving
pavilion of Charles II’s grand
Newmarket residence; find out
about the ‘sport of kings’ at the
National Horseracing Museum;
and take a tour of the National
Stud. On weekday mornings watch
racehorses training on the gallops.
a n d
Ride a steam train at Mid Suffolk
Light Railway, join in the schoolholiday fun at Moyse’s Hall
Museum or meet friendly farm
animals at Stowmarket’s award-winning
Museum of East Anglia Life.
Climb to the top of the motte and bailey
castles at Clare and Eye.
A timber-framed guildhall and fine
medieval merchants’ houses are legacy
from a time when Lavenham
was the 14th most wealthy town in
England, thanks to the medieval wool
trade. The town’s magnificent church,
and others in surrounding villages
benefited from generous donations by
rich wool traders.
Tap into local knowledge on a
walking tour with an expert guide.

secrets of Bury St Edmunds,

A day at the races, a night at the opera... ...and everything in between!
There’s a huge range of events and
entertainment in Suffolk so take a day
out and experience a world-renowned
festival, visit a steam rally or smell the
heady scent of roses on a garden open
day. Enjoy a travelling theatre show or
listen to music in a beautiful Suffolk
countryside setting.
Newmarket is home to two
magnificent racecourses.
The Rowley Mile is the most
historic stretch of turf in the world
of sport and hosts world-class racing
throughout spring and autumn. Few
occasions can match the dramatic
spectacle of its flagship event, the
QIPCO Guineas Festival
in May.
Summer heralds the magic of
the July Course with its old
fashioned grandstand, sun-dappled
lawns, magnificent beech trees and
beautiful floral displays. Highlights
are the Newmarket July
Festival and Newmarket
Nights with evening racing and
live concerts from some of the
biggest musical names.
It’s festival time! Listen to classical music at the world-famous
Aldeburgh Festival and Proms or at the Suffolk
Villages Festival. Enjoy two weeks of concerts and
events at Bury St Edmunds Festival. Sample music,
comedy and the spoken word at Latitude. Join music-lovers
in the park at IP-Art in Ipswich or out on the farm at
Jimmy’s Harvest Festival, or join in many more town
and village festivals throughout the county.

When he bought the Bildeston Crown, Suffolk
farmer James Buckle made one of his dreams
come true, supplying his fine restaurant with
beef from his own herd of red poll cattle. With
a top chef, quality produce and a journey from
field to plate of only a couple of miles, perhaps
it is no surprise that the inn scooped Gold
award in the Taste Of England category of
the 2010 VisitEngland Awards for Excellence.
It may be more of a surprise to find a rare
Japanese speciality on the menu at the
Shepherd & Dog at Forward Green. Owner,
Mary Bruce says, ‘We are lucky to be in the
same village as Earl Stonham Farms who
produce Wagyu cattle. These animals eat a
top-quality diet of natural ingredients and
the delicious beef is in high demand from top
restaurants. When they asked if we would like
to have our kitchen muster up some Wagyu
burgers we jumped at the chance.’ It’s essential
to pre-order as the burgers are not always
available.
The brewing vessels are right beside the bar
at Old Cannon Brewery in Bury St Edmunds
so enjoy a pint of ale whilst watching the
next brew in the making! The kitchen has
a reputation for serving ‘the bounty of the
county’ and beer is an ingredient in many
favourite dishes.
There’s a hot and smoky menu at the Chilli
Farm, Smokehouse and Deli at Mendlesham
with farm-smoked meats, cheeses and even
chilli hot chocolate.

Designed and built in 1819 by
the renowned architect William
Wilkins, the Theatre Royal is
the only surviving example of a
Regency playhouse and one of
only eight Grade 1 listed theatre
buildings in this country. In addition to a
year-round programme of drama and other arts performances, the Theatre sets
out to bring our fascinating heritage to life for today’s audiences.
