time
The Tendring Peninsula, which takes its name
from the old Tendring Hundred has a wide
range of heritage from prehistoric relics and
medieval churches to stylish Victorian villas.
here is a strong maritime history present throughout
the District in towns such as Brightlingsea, Harwich,
Dovercourt, Manningtree and Mistley. Another
legacy of the Essex Sunshine Coast is the Martello
Towers. This line of defensive fortresses located along
the coast in Walton-on-the-Naze, Clacton-on-Sea,
Jaywick and Point Clear were initially built in the 1800’s
to resist a potential invasion by Napoleon.
T
Elmstead Market
Ardleigh
The Church of St. Anne and St. Lawrence to the north of
the village has a rare carved oak recumbent effigy of a
knight in armour.
There is a fine group of 16th and 17th Century cottages
grouped around the 15th Century Parish Church in the
centre of the village. Spring Valley Mill, a privately-owned
18th Century timber framed weather boarded building,
was used as a watermill, later adapted to steam and is
now empty. It formed the setting for M. Saville’s ‘Treasure
at the Mill’.
Dovercourt
Tendring
Clacton-on-Sea
The village is graced by the elegant Church of St.
Edmund. The church is dedicated to the last king of
independent East Anglia, martyred by the Danes in the
9th Century.
The town was settled during the old stone age by a race of
hunters. Flint implements and the fossilised bones of the
cave lion, straight tusked elephant and wild ox have been
unearthed on the Clacton foreshore and at Lion Point.
Clacton developed from a small village into a seaside
resort in the late 19th Century with the fashion for coastal
health and bathing. The Pier was constructed in 1871 and
paddle steamers provided the first direct route to the resort
until the railway line opening later in 1882. The Pier was
only 30 feet across until the 1930’s when it was widened to
over 300 feet wide and a berthing arm was added.
Harwich
This attractive old town was built on a grid pattern in the
13th Century by the Earl of Norfolk to exploit its strategic
position at the mouth of the Stour/Orwell estuary. The
famous seafarers Hawkins, Drake and Frobisher all sailed
from Harwich during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I on
various expeditions.
The Mayflower, the ship which carried the Pilgrim Fathers to
America in 1620, was a frequent visitor to the harbour and
its Captain Christopher Jones lived in Kings Head Street.
The famous diarist Samuel Pepys was MP for the town in
the 1660’s, when Harwich was the headquarters of the
King’s Navy. Other notable visitors included King Charles II
and later Lord Nelson and Lady Hamilton who stayed at
‘The Three Cups’ in Church Street.
Lawford
There are ring ditches and banks to the south west of
Reed Island, the remnants of a neolithic religious site. Flint
implements and neolithic pottery have been found there.
The Church of St. Mary contains rich 14th
Century stone carvings in the chancel.
The Old Town contains a wealth of historic buildings. The
Maritime Heritage Trail around the old town of Harwich
describes its historic features and the town’s connections
with the sea.
Frinton-on-Sea
Developed as a select resort by
Sir Richard Cooper and largely
expanded after 1886. The
area south of Frinton Gates was
laid out with detached houses
set along broad tree lined
avenues and has preserved a
unique local character. The
Church of Old St. Mary contains
some interesting panels of
William Morris stained glass in
the East window, designed by
Burne Jones.
Thorrington
Thorrington Mill was built in the early 19th Century. It is the
only remaining Tide Mill in Essex and one of very few left in
East Anglia.
Brightlingsea
St Osyth
This attractive village derives its name from St. Osyth,
daughter of the first Christian King of East Anglia, who was
beheaded by the Danes in AD 653. The village centre is
dominated by the Augustinian Priory ruins and its
magnificent Gatehouse, which was completed in 1475.
The latter forms one of the finest monastic buildings in the
country. The priory buildings include a 16th Century tithe
barn and bishops lodgings and are set in a landscaped
park. In 1582 infamous witch trials were held in St. Osyth,
and six of the accused were sentenced to death. The
Church of St. Peter and St. Paul in the village centre has
unusual internal red brick piers and arches.
Beaumont cum Moze
The village contains the disused Trading Quay, intended
for vessels using Walton Backwaters. A tablet records the
fact that it was rebuilt in 1832 using stones from old
London Bridge. The 11th Century Parish Church of St.
Leonard contains the grave of Viscount Byng of Vimy,
Governor General of Canada.
ww w. essex- su n shi n e -c o ast. o rg. u k
The town has a history of shipbuilding and seafaring.
There are disused oyster pits near the Town Hard, where
the Colne Smack Preservation Society can also be found.
In 1347 five ships and 51 men were sent to the siege of
Calais. ‘William of Brightlingsea’ was in Sir Francis Drake’s
fleet which vanquished the Spanish Armada. Brightlingsea
has the distinction of being the only Cinque Port outside
Kent and Sussex having been a limb of Sandwich since
1360. The 13th Century Jacobes Hall, in the town centre
is timber framed with an undulating tile roof and external
staircase. All Saints Church, which is sited on a hill about a
mile inland from the town, was mainly built circa 1250.
Its impressive 97 feet high tower is visible from 17 miles out to
sea. A light was placed in the tower to guide fishing vessels
home. The Church contains some Roman brickwork and a
frieze of memorial ceramic wall tiles commemorating local
residents whose lives were lost at sea.
The town has been settled from Prehistoric times. Late
bronze age axe heads were found at upper Dovercourt.
To the Romans, the town was an important source of
building stone ‘Septaria’, taken from the cliffs. The modern
town largely developed in Victorian times as a
fashionable resort.
Manningtree & Mistley
These are attractive small ports at the head of the Stour,
the gateway to ‘Constable Country’ in Suffolk.
Manningtree was a centre of the cloth trade in Tudor
times and later a flourishing port for barges carrying mixed
cargoes down the coast to London. It contains an
impressive group of Georgian buildings.
It is believed that the reference to Falstaff in Shakespeare’s
Henry IV as ‘that roasted Manningtree Ox’ relates to the
practice of roasting a whole ox at the town’s medieval annual
fair. Matthew Hopkins, the notorious Witch Finder General,
struck terror into the local community during the 17th Century.
His victims were hung on the diminutive village green.
Mistley contains many pleasant Georgian and Victorian
houses. In the 18th Century local landowner Richard
Rigby MP attempted to develop Mistley into a fashionable
spa town, symbolised by a swan. He hired the architect
Robert Adam to design and remodel the existing church.
The Towers are all that remain after the centre section of
the medieval church was demolished in 1870. They are
the only known surviving remains of any of the churches
designed by Robert Adam.
Walton-on-the-Naze
The town illustrates the character of an early Victorian
seaside resort. The seafront was developed in 1825 and
Marine Parade, then named The Crescent, was built in
1832. Its Pier was originally constructed of wood in 1830
and was 330 feet long. It was extended to its present
length of 2,610 feet in 1898 when the electric train service
was started. The Naze, made up of red sandstone cliffs
formed during the Ice Age, is rich in fossils.
The octagonal brick Naze Tower was built as a beacon in
1720 to warn sailors of the West Rocks offshore. The
Saltings at Hamford Water were featured in Paul Gallico’s
novel ‘The Snow Goose’ and Arthur Ransome’s children’s
story ‘Secret Water.’

spending spree in one of our main shopping towns, the Essex Sunshine Coast offers a
range of shopping opportunities to suit all tastes and budgets!

selection of shops, ranging from familiar high

The Manningtree Delicatessen and wine cellar is a
wonderfully traditional local store that has been a
purveyor of fine cheeses, wines, condiments and
specialty foods from around the world since 1981 as
well as being selected by the famous television chef
Rick Stein, as one of his food hero’s!
Or if you are looking for that gift item with a
difference the Arna Farrington Studio in Thorpe-leSoken offers a selection of handmade craft items,
glassware, jewellery and art.
Just outside the main town of Clacton-on-Sea is the
Clacton Factory Outlet where multiple outlet stores
offer discounts off many famous brand names. The
larger known supermarkets are also located on the
outskirts of town where you can purchase all those
‘essentials’ required for your stay.
Frinton-on-Sea enjoys an enviable reputation as a
town where tradition and quality are highly valued.
Connaught Avenue, often dubbed the ‘Bond Street
of East Anglia,’ has an assortment of shops to suit all
tastes and needs.
For something a bit further afield, just outside the
Tendring Peninsula is Colchester Britain’s oldest
recorded town with its old world charm and
wonderful mix of shopping experiences as well as
being steeped in 2000 years of history.

Clacton Factory Outlet was opened in November 1998, but visitors today would be forgiven
for thinking that it has only recently opened its doors! New owners ROM Capital spent £2m in
2009 giving the entire centre a complete refurbishment with new eco friendly cladding and
full height glazing to all of their shops. They are now planning to spend an additional £1.8m
to continue the refurbishment in spring 2010 by adding canopied malls to the main walkways
for all weather shopping.
he refurbishment works have already attracted
some new big name brands to the centre with Klass

the
The Pier at Harwich is situated in the heart
of Harwich old town right opposite the
harbour and Ha’penny Pier. This superb
hotel with two restaurants had been owned
and personally run for over 30 years by the
Milsom family under the watchful eye of
head chef Chris Oakley, his wife Vreni and
general manager Nick Chambers.
he heart of the building is the Ha’penny bar and
brasserie on the ground floor. The brasserie is open all
day, with the full a la carte menu available from 12
noon right through to 9.30 every day so there is no rush,
just turn up when you’re ready! Perfect if you’re arriving by
land or sea. In the summer you can sit outside on the
terrace with a light meal or drink – a great place to watch
the world and boats go by!
T

On the first floor is the award winning Harbourside Restaurant,
specialising in local freshly caught seafood, much of which is
landed in the harbour opposite, so don’t be surprised to see
the fisherman delivering their daily catch to the kitchen door!
As you would expect Chris Oakley’s menu takes much of its
influence from the sea and he has devised an innovative
menu for you to enjoy. Local lobster is always on the menu
cooked whichever way you want. The restaurant has plenty
of wow factor with the décor reflecting the outside
ambiance, relax in the bar area before your meal, enjoy the
far reaching views of the Stour and Orwell estuaries –
perhaps with half a dozen Colchester oysters (if there’s an ‘R’
in the month!) and a glass of two of Champagne.
To complete the picture The Pier offers 14 stylish
bedrooms, many have views over the estuaries but all
offer the same high level of comfort – white fluffy towels,
crisp white linen, comfy beds – that you would expect
from the highest rated hotel in the Tendring Peninsular.
The Pier at Harwich is part of Milsoms Hotels and Restaurants
which also includes Le Talbooth, Maison Talbooth and milsoms
in Dedham and milsoms Kesgrave Hall near Woodbridge (all
within 20 minutes drive). If you’re staying at The Pier, dine

The Mistley Thorn is a Grade 2 listed Historic

on the site of an older pub in which the
notorious Witchfinder General, Matthew Hopkins,
held his grisly court.

Totally renovated in 2004 by Sherri Singleton, The
Mistley Thorn has seven individually designed
bedrooms. Each room is spacious and comfortable
with a light, contemporary feel. Sumptuous large
beds, powerful overhead showers, double-ended
baths and luxurious bath products ensure a restful
stay. The restaurant offers a daily menu with an
emphasis on quality seasonal produce.
Boasting a Bib Gourmand award as well as two AA

appreciate outstanding service as well as great value.

excellent walking centre as it lies on the Essex Way
and there are many superb opportunities for bird
watching or water sports on the River Stour. Other
local attractions include Flatford Mill, Beth Chatto
Gardens, and the surrounding wool towns and
villages as well as the noted Mistley Towers which
were designed by Robert Adam under the
patronage of Richard Rigby.
Adjacent to The Mistley Thorn is the renowned
Mistley Kitchen cookery workshops, also run by
Sherri Singleton. Offering one-day hands-on
workshops, the Mistley Kitchen is a great place to
unwind while learning culinary techniques in a
convivial atmosphere.
Located a pleasant walk up the river Stour in the
ancient town of Manningtree is Mistley Thorn’ sister
eatery, Lucca Enoteca, an Italian restaurant
specialising in artisanal wood fired pizzas. All of these
enterprises have received national recognition in
guides and leading newspapers and magazines. As
such they have put the area firmly on the culinary
map and are a ‘must visit’ attraction for visitors to this
part of the Tendring peninsula.

pier
clacton
The Pier was officially opened on the 27th of
July 1871 when the SS ‘Albert Edward’ called,
bringing with it a party of directors from
Woolwich Steam Packet Company and
around 200 guests. When it opened it was
just 160 yards in length and 4 yards wide.
T
he first major alterations to the Pier took place in
1893, it was lengthened to 1,180 feet and a
theatre and the Pier Pavilion (later called the Jolly
Roger), was built by architects Kinipple & Jaffrey at
the sea end.
During the First World War, Ernest Kingsman
purchased the Pier after it had gone into
administration and set about turning the Pier into
a leisure and entertainment centre.
By the outbreak of the Second World War he had
invested around a quarter of a million pounds into
the Pier’s redevelopment, building the Ocean
Theatre, the Children's Theatre, the Blue Lagoon
Dance Hall, the Crystal Casino an open air
swimming pool, open air stage for the Ramblas
Concert Party and the Steel Stella roller coaster
which was later destroyed by a fire in 1973. During
the war the pier was damaged by enemy action
and was also breached to prevent its use by an
invasion force.
Clacton Pier stands out as
a testament to how piers
can evolve, yet retain
their traditional features
1
The Pier helped to establish Clacton as one of the
leading seaside resorts in the country. However
1978 saw the closure of the Ocean Theatre and the
Pier went into a steady decline. Towards the end of
1994 a local business family, the Harrisons, bought
the Pier, and like Ernest Kingsman before them,
embarked on a refurbishment programme.
Back to the future...
2009 sees a new direction for Clacton Pier when taken
over by the Clacton Pier Company overseen by Billy
and Elliot Ball, whos family have been involved in the
amusement environment in the resort for over 60 years.
Currently the pier is going through some dynamic
changes and undergoing a steady transformation.
A 50ft helter-skelter was installed in 2009 which, had
previously featured in the 2008/2009 Marks &
Spencer's television advertising campaign.
Still retaining some of its old world charm with a
modern twist, the huge amusement halls,
assortment of fairground rides, food and game
concessions, a bar and restaurant ensure that there
is a little something for everyone who visits.
The Pier is open everyday all year round (except
Christmas day) and has a range of additional events
such as spectacular firework displays throughout the year.
