YOU
What The LINK needs now is; you! That’s right you! The LINK needs writers
with something interesting to write about. All contributions will be openly
welcomed. Whether you write a one off article about a TAFE event or grab
a mate and write a profile about each other to attempt to score a couple of
free movie tickets (keep reading to find out more about free movie tickets)
or if you’d like to submit more regular articles whether they be about an
ongoing project or regular individual articles we would be very pleased to
receive them.
Whether you want to write an article for the Missing Link or an essay for
class here are a few pointers to help you get started.
• WHAT? What do you do? Play in a band, skateboard, sing, mountain
climb, knit, fish, paint, dance, snorkel, exedra…
• WHERE? Where do you meet/ go?
• WHEN? Time, day, month.
• WHO? Who are you? Who else joins in? A club, mates, your grand mother?
• WHY? Why is it fun, why do you recommend it to others?
• HOW? How do you do it, how can others join in, how can people get
tickets, how can they get there, how does it make you feel, how do you
feel it improves you, your skills, the community?
Volunteer writers of articles that get published will be kindly thanked with
a free voucher for either a Dominoes large pizza or a free movie ticket. So
come on what are you waiting for there is tonnes to write about!

Dairy Photo Competition
Congratulations to Cheryl Heynemann from the
Certficate IV in Visual Arts and Crafts course. Cheryl
won 2nd Prize in the People’s Choice Awards and Best
Overall Photo, for the photo ‘Happy Sungold kids” (top
left) as well as winning Best People Picture for the
photo “Drinking on the tractor” (below left).
Warrnambool Cheese and Butter received over 300
entries for the photo competition, well beyond their
expectations. The range and quality was high, making
‘Happy Sungold kids’ by Cheryl Heynemann
the awards selection difficult and giving judges much
to discuss and debate. Over 1000 votes were counted.
The process involved a coordinated effort from the
corporate & IT teams. Brendan McLennan, Stacey
Beaton, and student Shaun Mahony, collected and
recorded the entries.
Judges included IT experts and photography
enthusiasts Stan McCullagh and Debbie Conheady.
Professional photographer Mark Williams from
Warrnambool was invited to join the panel, along
with coordinator Adriana Robaina who will be using
the photos for company promotions and documents.
Winners are awarded cash prizes and a certificate.
Congratulations to all the winners.

Don’t be a Dead Weight
Get into Weight Lifting
By Sabrina R Hards
Weight lifting is often mistaken for a guy thing. Many
women torture themselves with cardio workouts such
as aerobics or jogging in excessive amounts, in an attempt to get a trim and sexy figure - however a good
balance of cardio and weightlifting is ideal for both
men and women who want to tone up, feel great and
look their best. Whilst cardio boosts the metabolism
which burns fat weightlifting tones the muscles and
defines the figure.
Good muscle development means good bone
sup¬port which is optimal in prevention of bone fractures and breaks. These are not only very painful, but
can also lead to other ailments later such as arthritis.
Prevention is better than cure. A healthy balanced
diet and regular exercise is key to the best you; you
can be. Remember a healthy body = a healthy mind.
Let Ignition Gym at the Warrnambool Campus, ignite
your passion for a new happier, healthier you.
www.swtafe.vic.edu.au
Ignition Gym is open from Monday to Friday
between the hours of 7am-9am, 12-2pm & 4-6pm.
Gym memberships can be purchased from the
Warrnambool Campus front reception.
The LINK has three, one month trial Ignition Gym
memberships to be won, or for those who already
have a membership, four free half hour work¬outs
with a personal trainer.
To be in the running to win send an email to
[email protected] with the code words ‘Coach
potato’, (if you do not have an Ignition Gym membership) or ‘Gym junkie’( existing members) in the subject
header. Please include your name, student ID No. and
contact details in the body of the email.

The Ghost Riders
South West Music Archive
By Michael Schack
Ever wondered who the original members of the “Ghost Riders” were when the band formed
in 1960, or which local bands performed at the 1986 Port Fairy Folk Festival? Many people may
not be aware that the South West TAFE library is a great source of information on local music.
The “South West Music Archive” was initiated in 1999 by the then head librarian, Chris Satzke,
with the aim of creating a repository for records of historical value on music and musicians in
South West Victoria. Its establishment was viewed as complementary to the music industry skills
courses offered by South West TAFE at the time and consistent with the Institute’s key strategy
of contributing to the economic, cultural and social development of the South West Region. The archive itself contains physical objects such as CDs, DVDs and cassettes and its website
(http://www.swtafe.vic.edu.au/Library/Music_archive/index.aspx ) incorporates photographs,
Warrnambool Standard articles, MP3 files and other information. In 2008 the archive attracted
the attention of the regional ABC radio station (1602 AM) which now includes a regular music
archive segment at 6.25 in Wednesday’s breakfast program. In 2010 3YB began programming
Sunday night’s “Local and loaded” show and made use of material from the archive for its “From
the vault segment”. Continued development of the collection relies heavily on donations and
any CDs, photographs etc. are gratefully accepted.

Recycling Batteries
by Rene Melis
Batteries are the most common form of household
hazardous waste. Environmental impacts occur in
the production, distribution and end-of life phases of
the battery life cycle. In landfill, the chemicals inside
batteries can leach from their casings and pollute land
and water with heavy metals that are toxic to life. If
placed in household recycling, a battery can leach
chemicals. One battery can contaminate the contents
of a recycling container.
Although batteries are recyclable, 97% end
up in landfill. That’s about 8000 tonnes each
year! Electronic waste is growing at 3 times the rate
of general household waste in Australia. As part
of the Australian Battery Recycling Initiative, South
West Institute of Tafe supports the collection of used
batteries and currently has recycling bins at the
Warrnambool and Portland campus reception areas. If you have any waste batteries please drop them off
at the collection point nearest to you or place them in
a bag and leave them at reception at the Hamilton or
Glenormiston campus for transfer to the bins.
Please keep batteries out of the waste stream.

The rapid uptake of
digital technologies
hugely impacts on how
we communicate, relate,
learn, and spend our
leisure time. The ability
to access, understand
and participate or create
content using digital
media is becoming
integral to effective
participation in the digital
economy and Australian
society. Those who do
not adapt may fall victim
to the ‘digital divide’ and
be excluded. The ‘digital
revolution’ has positive
and negative effects,
which are both explored
in this timely book.
This is very special 5CD
compilation which
is to be released as a
companion to the new
book ‘The 100 Best
Australian Albums’ by
John O’Donnell (former
music editor of Rolling
Stone Australia and CEO
of EMI Australasia), Toby
Creswell (former editor
of Rolling Stone Australia
and author of Too Much
Ain’t Enough and The
Real Thing: Adventures
in Australian Rock N Roll
– 1957-Now) and Craig
Mathieson (author of
Hi-Fi Ways and The Sell-In.
The compilation album
includes tracks from 95
of the albums and is
sequenced in the same
order as the book.
Aimed at the practical
and armchair angler alike,
this stunning illustrated
title lists and explores
50 of the world’s most
amazing and challenging
fish, offering an insight
into each variety and
revealing the skills and
techniques required to
catch them.
The reader of Painting for
Collision Repair will be
introduced to all aspects
of modern refinishing.
Urethane undercoats
and top coats as well
as HVLP paint guns
are emphasized. The
techniques of surface
prep, paint mixing,
paint gun handling,
color matching, and
all other facets of
refinishing are presented
in this illustrated,
comprehensive guide.
Each chapter concludes
with ASE style questions
to evaluate the reader’s
understanding of the
topics.
