Discover our past
Warrnambool is home to many shipwrecks, historic boathouse,
state heritage listed lighthouse precinct and maritime village.
A major trading port in the late 1800's and at the heart of the
notorious Shipwreck Coast.
A mysterious shipwreck buried deep beneath the
sand dunes on Warrnambool’s outskirts is just one
of the intriguing tales that contribute to the city’s
unique history.
War Memorial
Lady Bay Lighthouse
Precinct
A Portuguese vessel, fondly known by locals as
“The Mahogany Ship” reportedly ran aground
off Warrnambool in the 1500s. This local legend
is supported by the discovery of old Portuguese
charts that depict Australia’s southern coastline as
far as Armstrong’s Bay. It is believed these charts
were drawn in the 1520s.
If ever found or proven, the Mahogany Ship and
those Portuguese charts could rewrite the history
of both Warrnambool and Australia.

whale watching
Victoria's
Southern
Right
Whale
Nursery
Z31
Almost every year between June and
September, female Southern Right Whales
return to the waters off Warrnambool’s
Logan’s Beach to calve.
The whales often swim within a hundred
metres of the shore and can be viewed from a
specially constructed whale viewing platform
in the sand dunes or from the beach.
Why do the whales come to
warrnambool?
The magnificent Southern Right Whales have been
visiting Warrnambool for hundreds of years.
Once, they were hunted almost to the point
of extinction, but since whaling was outlawed
in 1935, their numbers have been growing. In
summer, Southern Right Whales live in the subAntarctic. In winter, they migrate to warmer waters
around the southern areas of Australia.
The females migrate to the “nursery” areas close
to the shore to bear their calves, while the males,
yearlings and young adults use other locations
along the coast. The females generally stay in the
nursery for many weeks, allowing the calves to
feed and gather strength for their journey back to
the sub-Antarctic waters.
What is a whale?
Whales belong to a group of animals called
cetaceans, which include dolphins and porpoises.
The whale is the earth’s largest mammal. It
breathes air and feeds its young on milk.
The Southern Right Whale
The Southern Right Whale can be recognised
by its smooth, black back and lack of dorsal fin.
On the head of each Southern Right Whale are a
number of crusty outgrowths called callosities.
The callosities pattern varies from whale to whale,
which distinguish these animals from other
species. Irregular white patches are sometimes
found on the whale’s belly.
Why are they so named?
The early whalers regarded the whale as the ‘right’
whale to hunt. They swam slowly and close to
the shore, floated once harpooned, and yielded
large quantities of oil and whalebone. The word
“Southern” refers to southern hemisphere waters.
The birth of a whale
Whales breed once every two or three years.
Pregnancy lasts approximately 12 months and
the calf is suckled from a milk gland beneath the
mother’s body. The calf is about 5 to 6 metres long
at birth, grows quickly, and may double its weight
in the first week.
What are they doing?

www.visitwarrnambool.com.au
Are whales protected?
Whales are protected in Australian waters by Federal and State
laws. Fines of up to $320,000 may be imposed for harassment.
How big do these whales grow?
The average length of the adult Southern Right Whale is 15
metres, the average weight is 50 tonnes, with maximum length
of 18 metres and a weight of 80 tonnes.
How do they communicate?
Whales are social animals and display degrees of organisation,
behaviour and intelligence. To communicate whales use sound.
Breaching (leaping out of the water) and tail lobbing (hitting the
tail on the water) are also ways of communicating and playing.

TOWER HILL
Tower Hill Reserve,
nestled inside a dormant
volcano, is today a beautiful haven for wildlife thanks to the efforts
of Friends of Tower Hill and volunteers. A lake and wetland are
features of the reserve, and during years of average rainfall it is not
uncommon to see the wetland completely immersed in water.
Koalas, emus, kangaroos, sugar gliders and
many species of waterbirds, including graceful
black swans roam freely throughout the
reserve, often within plain view. Located only
14km west of Warrnambool on the Princes
Highway, Tower Hill is popular among people
of all ages for picnics, nature walks and wildlife
watching - BBQ's, toilets and picnic tables.
A volcano erupts
Tower Hill formed around 30,000 years ago in
a violent volcanic eruption. The initial eruption
created the outer rim of the volcano, and
subsequent smaller eruptions formed the
internal hills that can be seen today.
Rich human history
Artefacts found in the volcanic ash layers
remind us that Indigenous communities were
living in the area at the time of the eruption.
The area was a rich source of foods for the
Koroitgundidj people, whose descendants
retain special links with this country.
Victoria’s first national park
The striking landscape of a crater lake with
islands and cones, unique geology and diverse,
luxuriant vegetation prompted the declaration
of the area as Victoria’s first national park in
1892. However, by the 1930s early settlers had
cleared much of the area for grazing, cropping
and quarrying. The hills and islands were bare
and little wildlife remained.

The restoration
In the 1960s a revegetation project began, based
on species identified in an exceptionally detailed
painting of Tower Hill by Austrian born artist
Eugene von Guerard in 1855. A copy is now on
display at the Tower Hill Visitor Centre. Today, Parks
Victoria is implementing restoration programs that
aim to reintroduce a diversity of indigenous plants,
including ferns and grasses.
Get involved
Restoring habitat diversity can have healthy
benefits for you and your community, and
volunteering is a great way to get involved in
your environment…anyone can do it! More than
300,000 trees have been planted to date, and the
restoration continues with the Friends of Tower
Hill, school and university groups, volunteers and
community groups, working in partnership with
Parks Victoria.

Foreshore Promenade
Middle Island
Warrnambool’s award winning Foreshore Promenade
is a wonderful 5.7 kilometre path that stretches from
the Breakwater along the coastline to the famous
Southern Right Whale Nursery at Logan’s Beach. The promenade is very popular and you can walk, run,
ride or skate along this scenic trail.
Middle Island is home to seabirds such as the Shorttailed Shearwater, the Black-faced Cormorant and the
Little Penguin.
Lady Bay
Lady Bay offers protected swimming along with the
more challenging pursuits of surfing, yachting and
windsurfing. Surf lifesavers patrol the beach during
the summer.
Beyond the breakwater at the mouth of the Merri
River is Stingray Bay, a beautiful sheltered bay where
you can explore the rock pools.
The Little Penguin population has been decimated by
fox predation over the years, with an estimated 600
penguins in 1999 reduced to less than 10 by 2005.
Since 2006 Maremma Guardian Dogs have been
trained to protect Middle Island’s Little Penguins
from foxes, allowing the population to slowly build
over 180 penguins today.
In order to protect the penguin population and to
allow the Maremmas to do their work, access to the
Island is now restricted to the public.
This world first award winning project relies on
the assistance of businesses, organisations and
volunteers to help with penguin counts, penguin
breeding monitoring and improving habitat for
penguins by revegetating areas with native species. If

along the Great Ocean Road from Moonlight Head
(near Princetown) to Cape Bridgewater, the trail
incorporates 25 shipwrecks marked by road signs
and information plaques. While the wrecks cannot

port fairy, koroit & yambuk
Only a few kilometres west of
Warrnambool are the delightful towns
of Port Fairy, Koroit and Yambuk.
Port Fairy is one of the oldest seaports in the
state with an active fishing fleet still bringing the
catch of the day to the fisherman’s wharf. Short
bay trips and fishing charter boats operate from
the wharf, while pleasure craft jostle for space in
the marina opposite.
Historic buildings line the streets and these range
from large imposing residences to small ‘whalers’
cottages of the 1850s.
Moyne River, Port Fairy
Enjoy the natural attractions of Port Fairy,
including the mutton birds that nest between
September and April. Cycle the rail trail between
Warrnambool, Port Fairy and Koroit, take in a
round of golf at one of the best courses in the
state, dangle a line, or just find your own secret
place. You’ll love Port Fairy.
Koroit is nestled on the northern slopes of Tower
Hill and takes its name from the Aboriginal word
for the area. The town has many historic buildings
and an historic walking map available from retail
outlets will guide you past the most significant.
Enjoy a picnic in the beautiful botanic gardens,
follow the scenic arrow tour or call in at the Tower
Hill Reserve – Koroit is a must to visit.
Koroit
Yambuk is a small hamlet about 16km west of
Port Fairy. Call at the “The Crags” on your way,
(about 8km west) there are fantastic views of Lady
Julia Percy Island. The Yambuk coastal reserve is
based around the Yambuk Lake, it’s a great spot for
fishing or bird watching and camping is available.
