Jordbærpigerne har fulgt Camilla lige siden hendes skoletid i starten af 1990’erne. Dog er den lille jordbærpige først skabt i 2005, efter at Camillas niece Sofie-Amalie ‘Musse’ blev født. Frimærkerne skildrer jordbærpigerne i forskellige glade julesituationer. Here, 25 years, later we want to make his words our own. In the context of the modern communication and community development, his words are even more pertinent today than in 1988. Greenland is, in this respect, still quite unique in that our geographical location on the globe and our special infrastructure – where, for example, the absence of a road system between our cities - provides unique logistical challenges. In addition, regular air traffic to and from Greenland still only operates on certain days of the week and only rarely at weekends. Shipping traffic is, therefore, well developed in Greenland, making it possible to choose between a ship or aircraft when passengers, cargo - and post – need to be transported to and from Greenland and around our large, sprawling country. Consequently, shipping and aviation have had and still provide very important opportunities for POST Greenland to deliver the mail, in Greenland and to and from abroad. The Greenland Post Office was established in 1938, after which date the use of Danish stamps was gradually replaced by new Greenlandic stamps. Our Office has, since its early and sometimes difficult start, evolved into a modern postal service, with a number of exciting stamp issues behind it, each one with strings recording Greenland’s fascinating history. 1938 - 2013: From the first Greenlandic stamps to today On 17th September 1938 a notice No. 326 was forwarded, which was published in the Official Gazette on 31st October 1938. By Executive Order, inter alia, “From this provision it comes into force that the assessors of Greenland’s Governing post record that messages sent from Greenland to Denmark and abroad shall be stamped with Greenland stamps”. With effect from December 1st 1938 The Greenland Post Office became a member of The Universal Postal Union. The Postal Service’s sales office for stamp collectors, Bernstorffgade 32, Copenhagen K, started selling the new Greenlandic stamps on 1st December 1938. The first stamp series of The Greenland Post Office were housed in a presentation folder which was handed out during the UPU Congress in Buenos Aires on 23rd May 1939. The front of the folder showed a picture of King Christian X, greeting Greenland’s population during the first royal visit in 1921. The stamps were issued in denominations of 1, 5, 7, 10 and 15 ore bearing the image of Christian X and 0.30 kroner and 1.00 Danish krone featuring the design of a polar bear. These are the motifs of the sovereign and the polar bear which have formed the basis for the stamps in whole sheets and souvenir sheets now created by Bertil Skov Jørgensen as a distinguished commemoration of the 75th anniversary of The Greenland Post Office. POST Greenland is very pleased that today we have collectors in all parts of the world. In recent years, we have even had the pleasure to welcome new collectors in China into the collector circuit. It makes us proud that people across the globe take an interest in what we are featuring on our stamps. We take pride in the fact that every time we issue new stamps we tell a new and unique story of Greenland. About the artist Bertil Skov Jørgensen was born in Kolding in 1968. He trained at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and, since 2006, has been an apprentice engraver working with Martin Morck. In 2000 he made his debut on the postage stamp for Post Denmark and, in 2009, published his first design for POST Greenland. This 75th anniversary stamp is Bertil’s third stamp for Greenland. Below we highlight the two aircraft that adorn these two new stamps that, once again, are illustrated by the legendary Martin Morck: The De Havilland Twin Otter plane and Sikorsky S58ET helicopter. For the first aircraft we have chosen to illustrate the Icelandic side of the civil Greenland aviation history. It is, therefore, our pleasure to provide the below text written by Sigurdur ”Siggi” Aðalsteinsson, former director of Flugfélag Nordurland. This Icelandic airline was operative over a dozen years in North and East Greenland flying this type of aircraft. The Sikorsky helicopter S58ET text has been drafted by the former area manager in Grønlandsfly, Ole Dam, as readers of this magazine will recognize from the presentation of the previous five stamps in this exciting aviation series. Sikorsky helicopter S58ET By Ole Dam, former. Area Manager in Grønlandsfly In the period 1973-1976 Grønlandsfly acquired four helicopters of the type S58ET. They were medium-sized helicopters designed for special tasks for individual clients in Greenland, but also of a flexible type that could be used in several different situations. The S58ET helicopter was a civilian version developed from the S58 type - military designation CH34 - which had a large piston engine in the nose. The civilian helicopter was equipped with a twin jet engine - twinpac – and was flown by a pilot and a mechanic with spacefor 16 passengers. The seats were located along the cabin walls and it was quite narrow, so passenger numbers were generally reduced to 12. There was no great luxury, because the seats were just stretched canvas over a metal frame. It was, inter alia, used to perform the heavy lifting in sling - under suspended loads - eg. for the supply and replacement of large gas canisters at Telecom Service’s inaccessible repeater stations on the radio chain along the west coast of Greenland. In addition, a helicopter was also rented to my company Greenex in Maarmorilik to transport its employees to and from Kangerlussuaq. The S58ET helicopter was also deployed to carry local passengers in South Greenland - between Narsarsuaq and the towns and settlements in the area -, another at Tasiilaq in East Greenland, where passengers were carried plus other cargo between Kulusuk and Tasiilaq and operated settlements in the district. With its special exterior it was a familiar sight in Greenland. It was sturdy and reliable and did much good work during the years it was part of the Greenland Air fleet. The S58ET helicopters were not in Grønlandsfly for any long period of time. In 1978, two of them were sold due to lack of jobs and, in 1982, the two remaining were superseded by the newer and more usable Bell-212 helicopter. 01100521 Aviation Series III 1/2 S58ET helicopter Value: DKK 1.00 Date of issue: 21st October 2013 20 stamps per sheet Exterior dimensions: 58.00 x 33.00 mm Format: F - vertical Image and engraving: Martin Mörck Printing Method: Combination Paper: TR4 Photo: Finn Høj GREENLAND COLLECTOR 4 n History – Part 3 De Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otter By Sigurður ”Siggi” Aðalsteinsson, former Managing Director of Flugfelag Nordurlands The Twin Otter, a further development of the DHC3 Otter, has been flying in Greenland since 1974. It is a sturdy, flexible and useful plane which has past accomplishments and continues now to accomplish many special tasks. Photo: Sigurður ”Siggi” Aðalsteinsson Since 1976, the Icelandic company ”Flugfélag Norðurlands” (FN) has been firmly engaged in flying in Greenland and has, from its base in Iceland, solved a number of flight difficulties in relation to activities in Eastern, Northeastern and Northern Greenland. FN was established on 1st November 1959 based in Akureyri, Iceland. Originaly called Norðurflug, the name was changed to Flugfélag Norðurlands in 1975. In 1971 the company flew its first flight to Greenland – Kulusuk. In 1976 FN aquired its first Twin Otter to cope with an increasing number of passengers, mail and freight. During the same autumn, FN flew its first flight for The Sirius Patrole, trans- 5 porting passengers from Daneborg to Iceland. This was the start of a long standing service for Sirius. In 1977 a contract was signed to supply flights between Akureyri and the weather station at Danmarkshavn. These flights are still being carried out today. The same year the company also signed an agreement for winter flights taking the mail to Ittoqqortoormiit, landing on the sea ice infront of the village. However, these winter flights were discontinued when the airfield at Nerlerit Inaat opened in 1985. In 1978 a three year contract was signed with Greenland Geological Survey (GGU) to support its expedition in North Greenland. The Sirius operations expanded during the coming years, including transportation of new huts to locations suitable for Twin Otters. During the next decades FN‘s Twin Otters carried out operations along the whole east coast of Greenland from north to south and along the north coast to Qaanaaq and into Canada. The Twin Otter has also been used extensively for scientific projects on the Greenland Icecap. The aforementioned operations have been instrumental in demonstrating the capabilities of the Twin Otter to serve remote communities under the most primitive conditions. It has proved a valuable tool in the service of government organisations, companies and private individuals, transporting the mail, supplies and people safely and efficiently. In 1997 Flugfélag Norðurlands merged with Icelan- dair Domestic to form Flugfélag Íslands – Air Iceland. Air Iceland took over all Icelandair‘s domestic flights using Fokker 50 aircraft and, at the same time, maintained the operational base in Akureyri for regional services and for its Twin Otter operations to Greenland. In 2008 Air Iceland sold its Twin Otter operation to the newly formed Norlandair. Norlandair has a wide ownership with Air Greenland and Air Iceland among its shareholders. The company derives most of is revenue from its Greenland flight services. 01100522 Aviation Series III 2/2 Twin Otter Value: DKK 28.00 Life at Færingehavn and Nordafar A/S – joint issue with Posta Faroe Islands By Mette Maria Rasmussen, BA in prehistoric archaeology and Event Culture, and Cand.mag.stud in experience economy, Aarhus University In 1927 Færingehavn (Kangerluarsoruseq) was founded about 50 km south of Nuuk as a fishing port. The founders were Faroese fishermen who had obtained a permit to fish in territorial waters. In the spring of 1953 the company Nordafar A/S was founded with a capital of 2 million Danish Krone. Until 1990, Nordafar A/S, was a pure fishing business adventure that gave Greenland, Norway, Denmark and the Faroe Islands high employment and high earnings. Today Nordafar is an abandoned fishing settlement. The empty buildings are weathered and the whole place bears witness to a bygone golden age, lived not so long ago. Along with Posta Faroe Islands, POST Greenland commemorates with this stamp issue the fantastic fishing adventure that Nordafar in Færingehavn was for Greenland, Norway, Denmark and the Faroe Islands. The Norwegian engraver Martin Morck has created this evocative stamp issue, which is also issued in a joint Faroese, Greenlandic souvenir folder. There are many personal stories from life at Nordafar. The stories, which are all snapshots from everyday life, where work was the focus. The conditions for catching fish were so attractive that even ships with Portuguese, Spanish and British flags were seen. In 1957 the responsibility for administration of the docks shifted from Færingehavnen to Nordafar A/S. Three years before in 1954, Nordafar had visited to inspect the expansion of the docking areas, which were improved with a large quay, shop, factory and more barracks. The National Museum of Greenland at one point received a photo album of snaps taken during the summer 1954. The photos show a family on a picnic, a photo of the supervisor and views of the docking areas with the fishing boats. Some of the pictures are of Norwegian and Faroese work gangs working with transfers to the quay. Most of the people are still unknown but, even though their names have been forgotten, they still have a story to tell. However, the working life of the season did not only offer duties, but also lovely little experiences such as fresh coconut cakes from Nuuk. Sweets were popular in the cold wind, writes the former manager of Nordafar Jørgen Jørgensen in 1957: “In four and a half months, ..., the shop sold about four tons of sweets...”. Spare time was often spent at the cinema at Velferdshjemmet. Life at Færingehavnen and Nordafar always had its own rhythm and in some ways had its own calendar. It was the fishing season that governed, when work would be done – it was not an artificial calendar. Both Færingehavnen and, later, Nordafar primarily arose due to Faroese and Norwegian fishermen and the Danish state. The Faroese that I have met in Nuuk proudly tell about the time they worked there – or they knew a family member, who was at the sailors’ home, a ship or the factory. The same goes for the Greenlanders, who fished and worked there. Even though the fishery was run by Norway, Denmark and the Faroe Islands, the harbour has always been on Greenlandic soil and, thus, played a role for the current fishing industry in Kalaalit Nunaat. He was born in 1813, the same year that Denmark went bankrupt, so times were tough. But Carl was full of adventure and go-do attitude. He wanted to get out and see the world. As a young man he went to sea as a ship’s boy and sailed to Iceland. But he would sail further north - to Greenland. It was in the monopoly days and you were not able to travel to the big, almost unknown country up there. You may have a profession that qualified one for service in the Royal Greenland Trade Department where what was most needed was cooperage craft. Fate allowed Carl to train as a cooper and then he was immediately employed in Qeqertarsuaq / Godhavn. From that time - 1832 - and for many years he was firmly attached to Greenland - and he loved it! From the beginning he mixed with his Greenlandic settlement regimes and, although quite an unusual language, he quickly and easily learned Greenlandic - in addition to English, which he learned from whalers. Greenlanders appreciated QALE - as he was known - and he married a Greenlandic girl IdaBerthe, with whom he had two children. In 1845 the family moved to Upernavik, where Carl was President and Ida-Berthe midwife. POST Greenland, Filatelia P.O. Box 121 3913 Tasiilaq, Greenland Tel.: +299 98 11 55 Fax: +299 98 14 32 [email protected] www.stamps.gl In 1845 a great English expedition led by Sir John Franklin sailed north with the two ships named Erebus and Terror and about 130 men to find a sea route through the Northwest Passage. The ships and men disappeared without a trace and, in the following years, numerous expeditions were sent out to look for them. A whaling captain informed the British Admiralty that there was a man in Upernavik, who spoke both the Inuit language as well as English. Carl got permission and then participated in a series of often very dramatic search missions: 1850-51 led by whaling Captain William Penny 1853-55 led by the American Elisha Kent Kane 1857-59 led by the Irishman Francis Leopold McClintock The Kane expedition was a horrible voyage where everyone was close to death and had to abandon the ship and head down south to Upernavik in two small rowing boats across Melville Bay. During the McClintock expedition Carl and his companions succeeded in solving the mystery of what had become of the missing expedition. They found the skeletons of those who died on King William Island and they also found the only document known from Franklin’s journey. In 1860 the family went to Denmark, and Carl worked as lighthouse keeper on the small island Hjelm in the Kattegat. They lived there for 11 years, but once more he went travelling. With the Swedish geologist Otto Torell - the man who documented the theory that there had been ice ages in the North - he traveled to Svalbard and examined the north coast of these islands. Ida-Berthe died in 1874 and Carl in 1880. He was decorated by Queen Victoria with the polar medal. The Danish King Frederik VII decorated him with the Silver Cross of the Order of the Dannebrog and the Swedish king gave him the Vega Medal. John Franklin’s widow gave him a fine pocket watch. In his last year he received a pension from the British government. Incomprehensibly, he was all but forgotten in Denmark - probably because he truly was a modest man who never made much of himself. And yet he was one of his era’s most welltraveled polar explorers at the time which later was to be called the ”heroic” period. New Definitive Series Stamps By Per Svendsen, Managing Director of POST Greenland In October 2012 the long-awaited definitive stamp bearing Her Majesty the Queen’s portrait was issued. Later on the same portrait appeared on the add values DKK 0.50 and DKK 1.00. On 21st October it was reproduced again on the top-value: DKK 10.00. About our Queen There is a true and deeply felt connection between the Danish Royal house and the Greenlandic people. The relations run deep. Many up here still remember the Queen’s parents, King Frederik IX and Queen Ingrid, and the heart felt emotional connection they showed to Greenland. Margrethe Alexandrine Þorhildur Ingrid, Her Majesty the Queen, was born on 16th April 1940 at Amalienborg, Copenhagen. On 10th June 1967 she married Henri Marie Jean André, Count de Laborde de Monpezat, who, by the marriage, became His Royal Highness Prince Henrik of Denmark. The reigning couple’s two sons, His Royal Highness Crown Prince Frederik André Henrik Christian and His Royal Highness Prince Joachim Holger Waldemar Christian were born subsequently on 26th May 1968 and 7th June 1969 respectedly. Margrethe Alexandrine Þorhildur Ingrid became Queen of Denmark in 1972. NOTE The printing machine in which the definitive mark from 2012 (G488 and G489) were printed in China, is no longer in operation. Therefore POST Greenland has had to find another printer, who was Phil @ poste in Perigeux, France. For technological reasons, the definitive stamp G519 DKK 10.00 are therefore 1 ½ mm wider than the G488 and G489. The height of the series stamps 2012 and 2013 are the same. A whole sheet of the G519 is 1 cm wider than the G488 and G489. This is the third time that this young and very versatile artist has created the designs for Greenlandic stamps. The two photo montages shown on the stamps reflect Bolatta’s nostalgia for her childhood Christmas in Greenland. As she puts it: I wanted to do some ”grandmother mood” and thought of my mother’s small Christmas universes that I could look at and dream about for hours. The white poinsettias I know from childhood and they are pure Christmas nostalgia for me. The image is shown through a transparent crystal glass and features candles in the snow and ice, as we always do at Christmas. About the Artist Bolatta Silis-Hoegh was born in 1981 in Qaqortoq. As the daughter of artist Aka Hoegh and writer and photographer Ivars Silis, Bolatta comes from a home where art flourishes and is constantly evolving. September 2013 By Pertti Frandsen Under the headline ”In search of the dream, while philately enjoyed” during the last weekend of September the Beijing Exhibition Centre opens , the gates of this large, recurring international collectors’ exhibition in China. For the fourth time, POST Green- land will participate in a stamp exhibition in the ”Middle Kingdom”. And what could be more natural for a post office than to participate in this year’s largest stamp and ‘philatelic event” in the world’s most populous country? We, therefore, look forward to following up our sales successes from Beijing in 2010, Wuxi in 2011 and, again Beijing in 2012. It will also be the tenth time since its inception in 1995, that this event is held in China. Last autumn just over 100,000 enthusiastic and curious collectors visited this exhibition - mainly Chinese. . To accommodate the tens of thousands of visitors the organisers’ have, therefore, moved the event from the China World Trade Centre to the much larger Beijing Exhibition Centre, with its 22,000 m2 to create sufficient space. Organisers from China Post hope that at least as many visitors as last year will again flock to this annual international philatelic meeting point in China. Just like last year, we also share a nice booth position with our good colleagues from the other seven Nordic postal services. Once again we will bring lots of new Greenlandic stamps in all price ranges. In addition, we will bring the brand new 75th anniversary stamp from The Greenland Post Office, launched on 17th September and also our brand new joint issue with Posta Faroe Islands, which has the theme ”Nordafar”. We are very pleased to once again meet our Chinese collectors and present our stamps - and the story behind the stamps - from Greenland Read more about 2013 China International Collection Expo here: http://english.chinapost.com.cn/html/Home/report/566-1.htm 2013 Stamp, Letter & Postcard Fair 01303062 Joint Souvenir Folder with Macao Post Price: DKK 67.00 Date of issue: 21st October 2013 Containing a set of Macao Post’s Christmas stamps, a set of POST Greenland’s Christmas stamps as well as the joint first-day cover. 9 in Copenhagen: 4th - 5th October 2013 By Hjørdis Viberg Copenhagen is once again home to a large stamp show. It is being held at the Hotel Radisson Blu Falconer Allé 7-9 in Frederiksberg which is close to parking spaces, bus stops and the subway station at Frederiksberg Centre. The Fair’s area will be extended this year with an area on the ground floor, where four postal services will have booths. The major auction houses will be present for assessments and submissions. On the website www.3fff.dk, under ”Activities”, you will see the list of a number of Danish stamp dealers who will be present with new material for your collection. Five stamp dealers will also be travelling to the Fair from abroad and will contribute to a greater diversity of stamps and collectibles for sale. The 75th anniversary of The Greenland Post Office will be marked with a special exhibition that may be of interest to Greenland collectors. We will also bring the new joint issue with Posta Faroe Islands, which has the theme ”Nordafar”. In addition, the organisers will provide a variety of other exhibitions and also stamp activities for children. We are very pleased to once again meet with our Danish collectors at this great stamp exhibition in Copenhagen.
