ARIANAPOLIS
Why Catholic education?
Marianapolis is an independent Catholic school that is inclusive of all
faiths. We believe that spirituality is a foundation for compassionate,
generous individuals. The school environment fosters respect for
others, appreciation of diversity, and service to one’s local and global
community. We believe that the pillars of Catholicism provide relevant,
meaningful lessons that impact our students inside and outside the
classroom. Our students contemplate global issues with a moral
context; they weigh fairness and values alongside traditional academic
lessons. We encourage young women and men to extend themselves
spiritually and intellectually in daily life. At Marianapolis, students
grow into mature, self-directed adults with both vision and purpose.
Welcome.
Why Marianapolis?
Explore our school to find out. Nestled on 150
acres in northeast Connecticut, Marianapolis is
a premiere independent boarding and day school.
The mission of Marianapolis Preparatory School
is to educate students in the Catholic tradition of
academic excellence, with a commitment to an
active faith in God and a dedication to
building character with content,
compassion, and integrity.
Good advice, best perspective.
In addition to its year-long
courses, Marianapolis offers
57 elective courses for students
to choose from.
FACT
Every Marianapolis student is paired with a
faculty advisor who works exclusively with 8-10
students in the same grade. Advisors are tremendous
resources to students as they choose classes, face
academic challenges, and encounter new situations.
Advisors play a similarly pivotal role for parents.
They are the touchstone for families, providing
timely feedback on each student’s academic and
social landscape. Because an advisor works with
only one grade level, that teacher is well
equipped to handle age- and
course-specific
concerns.
What makes the learning experience distinct?
Find your voice.
Seniors at Marianapolis have the opportunity to
present their “senior voice” to the school community
during morning meetings throughout the academic
year. The content of the speech is determined solely by
individual presenters; each student is invited to share his
or her perspective before graduation. Topics range widely:
from personal passions to difficult losses, from being a twin
to becoming a young adult. Though the prospect of
speaking before the MPS community can initially be
daunting, students collaborate with senior class advisors
to perfect what they want to say and how they want to
say it. In the end, the leaders of our student
community set an important example for their
peers and offer invaluable insight into
the spirit of the community.
How does Marianapolis compete?
Marianapolis teams have
received all-league honors
for demonstrating model
sportsmanship throughout the
season.
Field Study
Athletics are a vital feature of the
education offered at Marianapolis. Whether
you are a novice athlete or a seasoned competitor,
there is a spot on our teams for you. Through at
least two seasons of athletic participation each year,
MPS students embrace teamwork, push boundaries,
and experience tremendous growth. What results
from a community focus on camaraderie and
healthy competition? Mature young adults
who are poised to take on the
rigors of life in college and
beyond.
What’s in an M ?
Marianapolis athletes join an
established tradition of what it means
to be a Golden Knight: we are determined,
disciplined, and spirited. As new generations of
students put on maroon and gold, they are a part of
a “team” much larger than the one taking the field.
Sharing the Marianapolis pride are parents, alumni,
peers, faculty, and even younger children who
aspire to become a part of the rich culture of the
school. Every student puts on a Marianapolis
uniform during their experience here
because they belong here; together,
we write the history of
Marianapolis.
FACT
Freedom to explore.
The Marianapolis arts
department offers 24
distinct courses for
academic credit.
Have you ever dyed wool? Created your own
paint? Sung a cappella? Produced a one-act
play? Sculpted glass beads? These are just some
of the dynamic activities that our students have
enjoyed outside of the traditional classroom
environment. In addition to the broad range of
courses offered, Marianapolis fosters unique
opportunities for students to
experience, explore, and enjoy
art in the world around
them.
FACT
Artists have room
to master their craft at
Marianapolis. Whether in the
blackbox theatre, the dance
studio, or in the visual arts
classrooms, students have access
to all the resources needed to
compile college-ready
portfolios and performances.
Space to create.
Is there room for expression?
How is Marianapolis a “global community”?
FACT
See the world firsthand.
In just
three years,
Marianapolis
students have
journeyed to
5 continents.
Every year, Marianapolis offers faculty-led
trips to destinations around the globe, inviting
students to discover world cultures for
themselves. Trips have brought travelers to France,
China, Spain, Fiji, New Zealand, Scotland, Costa
Rica, Peru, Italy, Australia, and England. There are
no restrictions on which students can go, and
students know a year in advance which trips
will be offered so that families may plan
accordingly. With the world at your
doorstep,
where would you go?
English as a Second
Language courses are geared
towards immersive learning at the level
appropriate for each student. In sections ranging
from beginning to transitional English proficiency,
students refine speaking, listening, reading, and writing
skills across the academic disciplines. Within residence halls,
community spaces are English-speaking zones, so that all students
can share their experiences in a common language. Participants in
the program enjoy year-long exposure to aspects of American culture.
ESL classes visit Old Sturbridge Village, a living history museum with
a working farm. They travel north to Stowe, Vermont for a weekend of
skiing. Christmas marks an annual opportunity to see an American
holiday show. And ESL classes plan throughout the year for a week-long
trip during March vacation. This travel opportunity allows them to
explore dramatically different parts of the United States. Previous
destinations include San Francisco, CA, Savannah, GA, Orlando,
FL, and Washington, D.C. Marianapolis not only integrates its
international students into the day-to-day culture of school
life, but also shares a much broader perspective on the
“American” experience.
English language, American education.
Family, here and abroad.
Serving the common good.
Marianapolis students feel responsibility
to the world around them. When natural
disasters impact nations, students mobilize with donation efforts and service travel - to
offer aid. Other communities face misfortune
every day; faculty and students travel each year
to Appalachia, helping rebuild communities
impacted by poverty. Through everything
from the Giving Tree to nursing home
visits, Marianapolis students make
an impact on local, regional,
and international levels.
The Marianapolis Family Network was
established to help boarding students have
a “home” connection. Day students, along with
their parents and siblings, act as host families
to Marianapolis boarders. Both hosts and MFN
students volunteer to participate in the program, and
every relationship is unique. Some families invite
their MFN student home for meals and holidays;
others bake snacks and celebrate student birthdays.
All families are supported by school- sponsored
programming: rock climbing, ice cream
socials, and game nights. The end result?
Our students are connected by
family and school life.

Tournaments
At Marianapolis,
there are dozens of traditions
that are anything but common. We
raise money for a cause by voting which
faculty member will dress up as a super
hero for the day. We invite hundreds of town
residents onto campus to celebrate the Chinese
New Year. We gather in the gym to watch the
finals of the intramural table tennis league. We
dress in class colors to win points and prizes
during Spirit Week. For the latest news
and photos from all the traditions at
Marianapolis, please check out

FACT
Are students well prepared for college?
We make it count.
Marianapolis boasts a true college
prep curriculum. Not only do our
Advanced Placement classes help students
receive course credit when they matriculate
to college, but a number of our standard
level courses earn them credit as well. In
fact, recent graduates report having
received college credit in every
single discipline offered at
Marianapolis.
Top scores, top choice.
It’s no secret that college admissions is
getting more competitive every year. That’s
why Marianapolis is committed to providing
cutting edge resources and hands-on guidance
throughout the process. Our students have access
to on-site classes and 1:1 tutoring for SAT and
TOEFL preparation. Collaboration with the college
office begins in the sophomore year, and culminates
in the application and matriculation processes
in the senior year. MPS students also travel
with the College Placement Director to
visit colleges. Our students are prepared
for every aspect of the process including graduation!
On average,
78% of MPS
graduates earn
Dean’s List honors
in their first
year of college.
In a given year,
15-20% of the
student population
at Marianapolis is
comprised
of siblings.
FACT
Family matters.
Finding a school that’s the right fit can
be difficult. Yet, every year, dozens of
families identify Marianapolis as the place
that’s best for each of their children. How can
MPS be such a good fit for so many different
students? Simple: the community here is an
extended family. We are a collection of
adults, kids, sisters, brothers, and even pets
who feel free to be ourselves in this safe,
nurturing environment.
Boarder or day, MPS is home
away from home.
Why do families choose Marianapolis?
Marianapolis
has truly become our
partner as we encourage our
children to grow academically,
socially and spiritually. We are so
grateful that we found a school
family where they are challenged
by their teachers, immersed in a
culture of excellence, and
valued for their individuality.

On the Dorm: My first year, one of my tougher students was
walking the hall and he looked upset. When I asked him
what was wrong, he responded, “George killed Lenny!”
Only then did I notice the copy of Of Mice and Men
he held. I really thought he might cry, and I was
impressed with how moved this student whom I never imagined would show
that depth of emotion - was by
