Bull October 2003 JFO Completes 25 Years with Issue #100 It all started with one man’s dedication to opener collecting, Don Bull. In 1978 he launched Just For Openers and within a short time had over 200 dedicated opener collectors. He spent five years as editor and was followed by Ed Kaye and Art Santen who also each served five years. This completes my tenth year and hopefully I can carry the torch another ten years. Don, Ed and Art have continued to bring great support to the club and I want especially to thank each of them for their devotion to the hobby. Original members still active in JFO include, Don Bull, Alex Darocy, Duane Dummer, Jack Ford, Ed Kaye, Herbert Haydock, George Lohmiller and Don Sherman. Congratulations and another special thanks for your twenty-five years of support. The Handbook has grown from 2,947 listings in 1978 to 15,123 for 2003. In 1978 there were 222 known types and by 1993 the number had grown to 1,032. JFO has realized great growth over the years and with sources such as the JFO Auction and eBay, members can continue to add to their collections. Thanks to all current members and please keep supporting Just For Openers. A-30-11 Rainier Brewing Co San Francisco A fairly tough opener to find, even for the west coast collectors. John Cartwright, next year’s convention co-host, found mine the year after the last convention in San Francisco. If you want to find one for your collection, plan on attending the 26th Annual JFO Convention next April in San Francisco. Of course you can wait for one to appear on eBay or in a JFO Auction, but you will be very old when one does. ————–——————–—2004 San Francisco—————–———— Convention registration is at the back of this issue. Early birds are welcomed to go ahead and register with the hotel by calling the Holiday Inn Fisherman’s Wharf. The dates are April 14-17, 2004 and toll free hotel number is 1-800-942-7348. Remember to tell them you are with the Just For Openers group. ———————————ABA Opener Exchange————————— Ernie Thoms volunteered to take over the ABA Opener Exchange for Dave Lendy. You must be an ABA member. Ernie maintains a list of openers available. Any openers you need off the list, he will send them to you and you send the same number of openers back to Ernie (or you can donate additional openers). It is intended for use by the beginning opener collector. Check the ABA membership ad on the club page. 25TH YEAR ISSUE #100 JUST FOR OPENERS OCTOBER 2003 PAGE 2 Editor Buys Ed Kaye’s A-9 Collection We went back and forth for a few months, but early in September I closed the deal with Ed Kaye to buy his A-9 Beer Baseball Player opener collection. Ed had sold his non-beer A-9s on eBay and I had asked last spring if he started to sell his beer A-9s to give me a shot at the whole collection. Ed had collected 37 of the 43 known beer A-9s. We settled on a price of $2,500.00 for the 37. Hopefully in the next few months I will add pictures of all of the beer A-9s I now have to the JFO website. I had two malt ones that Ed did not have and two additional varieties he did not have, so the collection now numbers 41. Check my want ad for the missing four. Thank you very much Ed for giving me a chance to own this fine collection. M-3 New Find !!! Standard Scranton Beer Barry Hunsburger, a former JFO member, turned up this previously unknown, M-3 Standard Scranton Beer / The Best Beer Brewed Is Brewed In Scranton. Barry has a fabulous collection of sliders and lives in a prime area for finding them, Easton, Pa. When he started selling off his beer collection last year, he said most buyers wanted to know one thing. “Was he selling his slider collection?” Lithos worth several thousand were on the market and Barry said most people wanted those “sliders”. Great find Barry and continued good hunting. Sandra Emme Elected President of FBOC (Figural Bottle Opener Club) At the annual FBOC Convention July, Sandra Emme was elected President of the club. Best of luck to Sandra. Details about FBOC are in the Club Section and the color Identification Guide book is in the Sale Ad section. Texas Yard Sale Yields Rare A-19-2 San Antonio Jeb Burruss reported that at a late summer Texas yard sale, one of the local beer collectors bought a bag of junk openers for $4. All junk except for one opener, an A-19-2 San Antonio alligator figural bottle opener. That was the good news, the bad news Jeb did not get the opener. A local Lone Star ended up with the opener. It has been 20 years since I got a good opener at a yard sale. It has been 10 years since I went to one. Oh well. Ken Hoesch Turns Up Another UL CBO Kenny Hoesch bought ($79.99) the UL CBO on the right on eBay this past quarter. Knife style with very unusual handle outline. Ad says “FM. Howell & Co. Cigar Boxes and Labels Elmira, N. Y. Nice find Kenny. Neat A-35 Missed on eBay Somehow I missed this one. I have several beer A-35s, but the ad on this one is super neat. “Comps. of Witch City Bottling Works, Inc. Salem, Mass.” The buyer was a serious Salem, Mass collector so who knows how high they would have gone (sold for a measly $15). Start planning now for the 2004 JFO Convention in San Francisco, the 1998 was a great convention, don’t miss out, enjoy the comraderie, openers and general fun time enjoyed by everyone attending. (Ollie Hibbeler: Be There!!!) PAGE 3 JUST FOR OPENERS OCTOBER 2003 25TH YEAR ISSUE C-45 Red Label from Budweiser Art Santen is selling the opener shown at the right. Budweiser issued these before they were sued by Red Label Whisky and so Anhueser-Busch dropped the name. The cost is $10.00 plus $2.00 shipping. Send $12 to Art Santen, 6126 McPherson Ave, Saint Louis MO 63112, a booklet comes with the opener. Twenty-five years ago several opener collectors and their spouses gathered in Trumbull, Connecticut for the first annual meeting of Just for Openers. Art Santen had flown in from St.Louis. Don Fehr and his son arrived in an RV filled with openers. And Tom and Judy Lothridge arrived on Friday evening. On Saturday Len and Gladys Carpenter arrived to bring our merry band to nine. The quarterly newsletter was the tie that we all had and HAVE had for twenty-five years. In 1984, Ed Kaye “volunteered” to edit and publish JFO. THANK YOU ED! Ed Kaye did a wonderful job on JFO for the next five years. Just for Openers was conceived with the January 1979 issue of JFO and the birth of our club –a club without rules – took place on the floor of the basement of the Bull house in April. Since then it has been a remarkable twenty-five year ride. In our 11th year Art Santen took over the reigns of JFO and published marvelous issues for the next five years. During his first year we went to Frankenmuth, Michigan ….. was Herb strumming a Ukelele in those days? ….. Was Camille doing caketops? …… And why are the other hosts, Lehr and Joan, always smiling? By October of that first year JFO had 205 subscribers and by early April of 1980, a number of them were packing their bags for the Hazelwood, Missouri meeting to be hosted by Ollie “Ollie Sez” Hibbeler. One of the most memorable evenings of that weekend included a wonderful pizza and beer dinner at Talayna’s and then went off to see Art’s tiny collection of 5000+ openers! In 1990 we got a taste of the South in Durham, North Carolina for John Stanley’s meeting ….. what a grand evening that was when we had dinner at the Angus Barn! We liked it so much that we went back to North Carolina the following year ….thanks to John and his co-host Roger Jarrell. We stayed in the South the next year … The third meeting – again in St. Louis - was hosted by Bob Chapman. Collectors from eight states showed up. There were more openers than ever and more treasures to take home. Art was busily working on the second 5000. Kentucky is the South, isn’t it? Tom Zruno - another we truly miss - gave us a grand meeting. It was back to Kentucky in 1993 by invitation of the Haydocks. If you never got a chance to see the museum filled with their breweriana, you missed something you would remember forever. The meeting moved to Indianapolis for the next two years. Those meetings were hosted by corkscrew collector Joe Balaban. Remember Joe? God! - how we missed Now….now…. we got the young guy in there – full of energy and ready to take on the JFO newsletter. John In the sixth year, Gary Deachman invited us to Denver Summing up the April 18, 1979 meeting, Art Santen re- for our meeting. He and Bill McKienzie hosted that meeting and the seventh. …. I really miss Bill. Bill would ported in the October issue of Just for Openers: “I returned to St. Louis with 280 new openers and eight new spend days driving to JFO conventions and pick up so friends who attended the convention. The friendliness of many great openers and corkscrews along the way. He my new found friends left no doubt in my mind that this was a real digger. But to make a trade with trip was well worthwhile. "It was agreed at this conven- him….hmmm…that took lots of patience. We all remember the trades he would make with Norm Jay. Then it was back to St. Louis for a meetAnd I’m sure all of you have found all of the meetings you have attended to be worthwhile and filled with treas- ing hosted by Vic Keown .... another wonderful friend we all miss. ures. 25TH YEAR ISSUE JUST FOR OPENERS OCTOBER 2003 PAGE 5 25 Years of Just For Openers by Don Bull Stanley was our man ….. and now you can’t take that away from him! We’ve seen ten fantastic years with John …. and Pat! and we’re sure he’s ready to continue for another ten. Thank you John! Keep those newsletters coming – you know the first thing I read is Pat’s Spouses Corner. John, you are getting better all the time – soon you’ll give Pat some stiff writing competition! In 1994 Ben Hoffman brought us our first meeting in Pennsylvania. Hey Ben, wasn’t it you who got my Kaier wallmount when I unloaded my openers?! Now how about that recent ebay sale at $1245.00??? In 1995 Don Whelan ….. yet another we miss…. brought us back to Missouri – this time to St. Joseph. show up at your door as soon as you check in other than at a JFO meeting? “Got any corkscrews?” is his greeting. And have you ever seen an opener collector that couldn’t possibly use all those can openers in a lifetime? ……… What does Joe Young keep under that hat? And how does Mark Benjamin continue to turn up all that great stuff? Is Harold Queen here with his “Boots” – aren’t they a grand couple?! Hey, Harriet and Sandra – it’s OK for girls to collect openers too! Love ya’ both! I remember Leon Beebe, Joe Cardone, and Phil Fouch. Great guys….And how about those huge displays Dick Norm Jay and Bob Stahly brought us back to Chicago in Britton exhibited at meetings? ….. And let’s remember 1996. We found new homes in Buffalo, New York (Mark the buckets of rusty openers our friend John Horn brought Barren) and San Francisco (John Cartwright). In 1999 to meetings. ….. And how many times did you see Dale Bob McNary and Art Johnson brought JFO to Naples, Deckert wanting to buy every opener in sight? ….. God Florida ….. Florida doesn’t count as the South, does it?. bless ‘em all. We returned to Chicago in 2000 ….. Thank you again, Bonnie and I regret that we were not able to join you for Norm! And in 2001 Don Whelan brought JFO back to St. this 25th Annual Meeting of Just For Openers but rest asJoseph for another visit. sured that we are with you in heart and spirit. We miss you all. Have a safe journey home. Last year, Larry Moter hosted a terrific meeting in Fred- Don Bull April 2003 ericksburg, Virginia – ah, I love Virginia! And that brings us up to this, our 25th Annual Meeting. And this ISN’T just a meeting about openers and corkscrews. It’s not just a swap meet for those objects. None of our meetings have been that. They have been a helluva lot more………. JFO is about the friendships we all built up over the years. There are so many people that we lost along the way ….. I’ve named a number of them already ….. but we can take solace in those that we still have. These are lifelong friendships folks – and don’t you forget it. Let us be thankful for JFO editors Ed Kaye, Art Santen, John Stanley and all of the meeting hosts and hostesses who have kept us all together and will keep us together for years to come. I’m almost done. And I haven’t forgotten that this is the only group I’ve ever belonged to where a couple has the same name – well almost, Verne and LaVerne. Hey, what a great job they have done on JFO live auctions over the years. An eBay purchase I made of an Oyster Tin Can lid showing an E-15 style wire opener. Wire openers with Oyster Where else can you be certain that Herb Danziger will ads are desirable and somewhat hard to find. 25TH YEAR ISSUE JUST FOR OPENERS OCTOBER 2003 PAGE 6 Spouse’s Corner By Pat Stanley, the Editor’s Spouse While thousands of people deal with the destruction of hurricane Isabel, we feel very fortunate to have been left untouched. The few small branches scattered in our yard await me after I compose my contribution to the JFO newsletter. Once again I have been reminiscing through a year of issues, 1995. It was a fun step back in time. A C-13-UL, “Sportmen’s Beer” advertising Galeton Beer that Norm Jay acquired was pictured in the January issue. Openers and breweriana from Schwarzenbach Brewing Company or Galeton Brewing Company of Galeton, Pa. is of special interest to John Hall. His history about the brewing industry in Galeton added the dimension that makes this hobby so interesting. In 1858, Joseph Schwarzenbach, a German immigrant from Bavaria, Germany opened a brewery in Germania, Pa that operated there until 1901. It reopened in Galeton in 1902 where it had better access to the railroad. A firemen’s convention held in Galeton in 1907 was called the Mardi-Gras of the North. The Schwarzenbach Brewing Company had an open house featuring the special brew for the event, “Firemen’s Brew”. It was a memorable event. Prohibition in 1920 forced the brewery to close for a short time only to open in 1921 to manufacture soda pop, ice cream and ice. This was a cover for the beer shipped out in boxcars identified as containing potatoes. The brewery was sold in 1927 and raided by Federal agents the next year. Beer was siphoned into Pine Creek though long hoses. Half the population headed for the creek with anything that would hold some beer. What a day! The brewery was sold again in 1933 upon the Repeal of Prohibition in 1933, but finally closed its doors in 1937, forced under by larger breweries that had a corner on the market. In the January issue, John told about one of his best hauls ever from a small antique show when sharing his visit to a show in Liberty, NC about 25 miles from Chapel Hill. The rain was coming down hard and he was getting soaked, “but for the love of opener collecting, he didn’t mind” as he picked through a large hatbox full of openers and corkscrews. Of the 100, he came home with 30 averaging a price of $2 each after going through pile twice. Such patience this red head has when it comes to openers. At the Semi-Annual Charlotte Antique Extravaganza John found an item he had been looking for 15 years (other than the wife it took him about that long to find), a Beer or Soda Kitchen Utensil Opener. He got the dealer to knock two dollars off for a final price of $15.50. The lady seemed pleased that “he found something he likes”, but was probably feeling some regrets when her eyes lit up reading “Coca Cola”. She just handed John his new acquisition along with his change. An article Dean Walters published in the Canadian Corkscrew Collector’s Club featured in the January JFO might be one you would like to read again for it gave some hints on how to discern fabulous from fakery. The way you can protect yourself from items of dubious distinction is knowledge and experience. Read books, look at advanced collections, take a close look at items, attend meetings (like JFO San Francisco 2004), talk to seasoned collectors and dealers and develop a relationship of trust with dealers from whom you buy. Other information about the surface patina authentic items have and the metals used to braze joints and seams in corkscrews was interesting and useful. He ended with “Caveat emptor” (Buyer Beware) is as valuable an ancient adage as is the value of any quality antique. An ad for his latest quarterly Corkscrew Catalog followed the article. 25TH YEAR ISSUE JUST FOR OPENERS OCTOBER 2003 PAGE 7 Spouse’s Corner (continued) Four pages of Bill McKienzie’s drawings of E-9 with Rounded Heads and E-14s with Squared or Dipped Heads were included in the January issue. Various members submitted their suggestions for Cleaning Openers for this issue. John told a story where he cleaned up an A-13 Car for Gary Deachman at a convention. It came out so nice that Gary wouldn’t trade it to John, so John warns you not to clean an opener until after the trade!! In an earlier issue John only soaked openers in Oxalic Acid for a few hours. In this issue he said that after lots of experimenting he many times now “soaks” openers overnight if they are especially rusty. I didn’t know about his process change for awhile and kept waking him up (since the night owl is up much later than the early bird who is trying to catch openers) to tell him that he left an opener in the jar, fearing it would be completely dissolved by morning. John always worries about collectors who live near salt water as the fight against rust is a full time job. Right now we are worried about JFO member Mark Benjamin as Isabel’s path crossed their home on the coast of North Carolina. (Update: The openers are fine—oh, they are too. Lost their pier and was the extent of their damage.) Spouse’s Corner featured Paulette Kutska’s response to my questionnaire about your spouses addiction to collecting openers. She was the first in the marriage to collect, collecting button hooks, bookmarks and old books when he got “hooked” on openers. This summarizes the first 18 pages of the 56 pages in January 1995 issue. The other pages included the auction and new additions. Next is April 1995, compiled in the frenzy of excitement that the Annual JFO Convention to be held in St. Joseph, Missouri is quickly approaching! Bill McKienzie hadn’t been able to contribute to JFO for a couple of years due to health problems, but thanks to a period of improved health, he sent in an extremely nice article on the Hund & Eger Bottling Company that distributed Goetz Country Club Beer. St. Joseph is famous for being the starting point of the Pony Express, so the Goetz Brewing Company founded in 1859 chose the theme of a pony express rider and the slogan “Famous Since the Days of THE PONY EXPRESS” to advertise their beer. Don Whelan assisted with Bill’s article by researching the history of the Hund & Eger Bottling Company and sending pictures of openers in his collection and photocopies of ads from the city directories. Two great collectors, both sorely missed by all the JFO family who had the privilege of knowing them. The Hund & Eger Bottling Company is of special interest to both collectors of beer and soda advertising openers as Seldom do you find a bottling company: issuing more than one or two openers that had chosen such desirable and unusual types to advertise their business and products that was an agent for three different brewers that had a name other than Coca-Cola Bottling Company that is a bottler and distributor of Coca-Cola that was as unique as the Hund & Eger Bottling Company 25TH YEAR ISSUE JUST FOR OPENERS OCTOBER 2003 PAGE 8 Spouse’s Corner (continued) Read the rest of the story of this company dating back to 1882 in the April 1995 issue, including the fact that they became the agent for Schlitz probably having been made an offer they couldn’t refuse. I remember April 1995 well, listening to John torment himself about going up $3 on the Annual JFO dues so he could mail out the issues First Class. In this announcement John tells how his day is always brightened when another JFO member calls him. It’s a time to talk openers and more openers. Then they would tell him that they had not received the newsletter he had mailed weeks before and his happy mood turned to solemn. He felt personally responsible. The results of the huge Bull Auction were published. 2,575 openers brought over $16,000. The high bid as $237 for a B-19-49 Hajicek bought for the grandson of Hajicek. Other memories of 1995 included the visit Ben and Cornelia Hoffman made with us in Mid-January, just as withdrawal from lack of antique shows brings collectors to their lowest point of the winter. Besides all the time spent in John’s Opener Room, we did go to the Greensboro Flea Market. I always remember one time I dropped John off there and went on to do some shopping of my own. It’s in a coliseum that is fenced in and has several gates. As my mind was on my plan, I did not pay attention to which gate. I drove around and around upon my return and finally found him under a tree on this hot afternoon, not real happy with me!! The February Blue & Grey show in Fredericksburg, Virginia is another prescription for the winter blues and grey clouds hovering from lack of new, old openers. (Ebay has helped remedy this affliction, perhaps almost cured it except for the huge need to see other collectors who re-enforce that there are others who understand the disease). At the 17th Annual Blue & Grey show, Fil Graff and his wife Robbie were set up to sell his can and bottle collection as Fil had just retired and they were leaving Chicago to moved to collectors paradise, Pennsylvannia. We hopefully will see the JFO member highlighted in the April Spouse’s Corner when John and I head to San Francisco in mid-October and stay where the April 2004 Convention will be held….the one and only Jack Ford. I was glad to meet Jack at the 1998 JFO Convention in San Francisco, the man who had cared for his wife who suffered from the “horrible grips of Multiple Sclerosis” most of their married life. She was a serious collector herself and their love of collecting gave them “many happy moments” during her lifetime. I still think of that article when I see someone at a show in a wheelchair. Don’t glare at them if they block your way for a moment, they are there because they love collecting too. The April issue included a list of Vaughn Ads shown in the then 16 years of JFO and four pages of a circa 1937 Vaughan Catalog from the collection of Ben Hoffman. Next the July issue, my favorite as it’s the JFO Convention Issue!! The best walk down memory lane! Don and Cora Whelan hosted the first of two conventions they had for the club in St. Joseph, Missouri. There were 40 members at this great show including 8 first time attendees while 13 regular attendees were absent for various reasons. Ollie Hibbeler’s write up about the lunch at the landmark saloon, “The Bucket Shop” described one of the best times ever perfectly. “The wagon train going there got lost at least twice. It made you wonder how the pioneers ever made it West! About the third bucket of beer we were pleasantly surprised by the piano playing of one of our member’s 25TH YEAR ISSUE JUST FOR OPENERS OCTOBER 2003 PAGE 9 spouse, Jane Alcorn from Lincoln, Nebraska. Everyone joined in the sing-a-long and Ben Hoffman and Harold Spouse’s Corner (continued) Queen danced the Pennsylvania polka together. And it was hardly noon yet!” John’s Convention Highlights mentioned: our quarter mile run, openers in tow, through the Atlanta airport when a late arrival jeopardized meeting our connection the kindness extended to us by our host and hostess who reserved a suite for us at the convention hotel Don Sherman’s trip from LA by train to Kansas City, then bus to St. Joe, then walking the last mile from the bus station to the hotel, packed down with a heavy load….accomplished on the sheer excitement of another JFO Convention Some teasing aimed at Art Santen about JFP, “Just for Plastic” that John apologized for in the next issue I especially enjoyed the Schlitz Article from the early 1900’s in Harper’s Magazine that was included in the July JFO. The author who “began to gain a normal opinion” on beer through travel, after being raised where beer was considered a veritable symbol of sin, went into great detail about the production of Schlitz beer. His doctor told him that the malt and hops in beer were good for him as they were nerve foods and tonics and he needed them, but to get pure beer – Schlitz beer. For those M-3 Slide Out enthusiasts like Art Johnson, better go back to page 31 of the July issue to see price ranges based on ratings of the number known, i.e. 1 to 5 known would bring $80-$100. Bet those prices are out of date now! Spouse’s Corner July 1995 honored Vic Keown. His wife Mary Ann described the JFO Convention as the Family Reunion Type Convention. The reunion misses Vic and welcomes Mary Ann to come if she can. Better move on to the October 1995 issue as this is getting quite lengthy even with me leaving out some notes I’ve made. I don’t remember reading one article in 1995 that I found very interesting in my review, hope you do too. In one of the volumes of “The Canadian Brewerianist”, it was mentioned that a very rare bottle had been sighted in Saskatchewan and so the ingenuity and persistence to track down this treasure, a rare Peerless Lager Beer bottle, began by Paul Wingate. First he called Dick Sweet to find out who spotted it. A lucky start as Dick had spotted it in the town of Watrous, population 2000. A newspaper ad wouldn’t work as no newspaper in this little town. Door to door inquiry didn’t sound good at first, but as the love of the hunt took command, he made up 450 flyers and made a rainy drive with his family and friends to Watrous one Labor Day weekend. It wasn’t raining there so the kids delivered flyers to all but a couple of blocks of houses as they ran out of copies. Then the wait began. A few calls about other bottles people had. After a month he started to accept that he had missed the house or the owner was keeping the treasure. Over the next six months he had more or less given up on it, but still considering another attempt. On April 27, 1995 his wife told him that some guy was on the phone about bottles again. Paul even wrote down the name Peerless Lager Beer before anything sunk in. It now sits in his bottle room where “it has always belonged”. Spouse’s Corner collector honored was Art Santen as he had been on national television, but had not really made it 25TH YEAR ISSUE JUST FOR OPENERS OCTOBER 2003 PAGE 10 until featured in Spouse’s Corner. His wife Dorothy told about her father giving Art an Anheuser-Busch knife with Spouse’s Corner (continued) a peephole and Art was “captured and seduced by the hobby”. She doesn’t collect anything because there is no room! Can’t dispute that! John included articles about the ECBA Convention in Kingston, NY and the NABA Convention in Chattanooga, TN. That was a busy year, as I went to both of these too. We stopped in Stamford, Ct., the former home of Don and Bonnie Bull on they way back from Kingston. We ended up driving straight home from there, with the night owl pulling the late shift. About 3 a.m. we made a stop at a busy well-lit gas station. We were going to feed the car then cross a service road to a Hardee’s. I came out of the ladies room and didn’t see John. Could not imagine that he would move the car over to Hardee’s and make me walk across by myself and I knew our Yorkie, Cognac would never leave me. I looked over there and no John! As panic started to take over, thinking John had been collector-napped, I started to go to the register to see if a red head had been in to pay. Before totally embarrassing myself, I realized that gas pumps were on both sides of the station and I was looking on the wrong side. Some strong coffee and we made it home at 5 a.m. Does it surprise you to know that John immediately started polishing openers he acquired on our journey? And do I remember Chattanooga!! We did eat some great food there and I had fun selling American Breweries II handbooks as John was too pre-occupied to do so. But the thing I remember most is this. I came back to our room and found Harold Queen looking at a pile of openers on a towel I didn’t recognize. Not one of ours and not the hotels. John could have easily purchased a collection without my knowledge if he hadn’t brought it back from the seller’s room in a towel thrown in with the “deal”. The October issue had a great article on the Shrapnel Corkscrew and collector Robert Goldscheider. Some of the quotes I liked in this article include: The scholarship of corkscrews is a lot of fun The admixture of collecting and technology appeals to Goldscheider I love to see the evolution of corkscrews made by the same company Goldscheider often spends evenings oiling the levers and polishing the silver, brass and steel…it’s very relaxing to bring them back to life. Read the article to learn more and see some great pictures of Goldscheider’s favorites. Then if your opener/corkscrew appetite is still hungry, check out the Cigar Box Openers and Cigar Cutter pictures Bill McKienzie provided for our enjoyment, 10 pages of sketches and his last contribution to the JFO newsletter. And so I conclude another Spouse’s Corner. John is watching his college football team play. I think I’m coming in under the wire quite early. There are four sounds in our home that let me know that John is home, the sound of his keyboard taking him on his constant survey of eBay, clinking of openers, the polisher running in the garage, and sports!! Looking Forward to a Preview of San Francisco this October A recent eBay purchase (not cheap at $142.00) but I wanted it pretty bad. Not many advertising items from Ontario Brewing Co. On most openers Tannhaeuser is used but a couple of breweries did use Tannhauser. Those being Ohio Union from Columbus, Oh and Bergner & Engel from Philadelphia. Several openers from the Philadelphia area have Tannhaeuser so we can only assume a rival brewer used that spelling. I have a couple of Bergner & Engel knives and the spelling is Tannhauser. Art questioned the following openers as he has them in his collection. In each case Tannhauser should be Tannhaeuser. The openers to be corrected are B-18-162 Claussen, and B-21-310, B-21360 and B-21-450 should all be changed to Tannhaeuser. Does anyone have these openers with the spelling of Tannhauser? The A-11-1 Wooden Shoe selling price of $73.00 was a pretty surprise to me as you rarely see this one on the market. The A-17 Dr Pepper is the 4th or 5th of this style offered on eBay and they have all brought in 400-600 price range. This example was pretty rough looking but was really hard to tell as the picture shown was not too good. Overall a nice selections “A”s and I will close with the Goodyear Airplane going for $26.00 and normally it sells for around $50.00. Once again eBay has offered many for sale and the price is reflecting the availability. The “B”s kick off with a very hard to find B-1-28 Reno. Even with no paint it was a nice looking opener and brought a good price at $142.19. My lucky bid of $133.99 got blown away on the B-12-UL Diehls. Just one of those beer brands with a very serious collector or You will probably notice that eBay results are down collectors chasing after anything with that name. I was about a 100 items this past quarter. Summer time usually even more surprised to see the B-12-3 Gold Top go for sees less action on eBay but could also be a sign of deal- only $19.49. Fairly tough beer type and I paid $65.00 for ers just finding fewer good opener to sell. The cast iron my B-12-3. I was beat on the B-13 Coca-Cola from AlaBritish patent openers see a constant influx of the same bama by the heavyweight Coca-Cola collectors. Some style. For any one week there will be at least a 100 of good beer keys with the highlights being the B-18-52 this common style offered for sale. As usual we see new North Yakima and the B-23-UL Reisch in the $100 range. faces in the opener market and I was even successful in The B-42 Coca-Cola went high as usually this sells in the getting a couple of them to join JFO. $40-50 range. I tried to list Not many good “C”s, but the C-13 Dr Pepper hit $150.00 three items a day and overall was very pleased with the and it was the 3rd or 4th example on eBay (all bringing sells. One area of openers I decided to start selling some $100-$150). As I mentioned before the British sellers of my collection was Coca-Cola openers. Competition on have flooded the market with cast iron openers. I do not eBay is very strong as several advanced collectors are anything about their breweries as far as what is rare and constantly bidding and buying the good Coca-Cola open- what is common. The cast iron opener with the opener ers. end shaped like a cat’s paw is desirable. “E-5” sodas do well especially if the handle pictures a bottle. Some good Leading off with my quarterly analysis, two A-1 Coca“E-14”s were available. I watched the first E-14-278 Cola sold for $300 each (one from Nebraska was from Storck sell for $66.00 and lsited Dave Lendy’s. It sold my collection). Coca-Cola by far and away put out the for $47.35. Metzger openers do well, so I sold Dave’s for most “A” figural styles of any advertising company. A $42.00 on eBay. The seller of the E-14-528 Olt had lot of great styles to shoot for, just bring the checkbook found an extra at a Dayton, Oh yard sale and offered his when you get ready to buy any of these. A-9 baseball spare on eBay. I bought the E-16-3 West End from a players were abundant (see the Ed Kaye Collection Sold seller in England. He had beaten me out on the opener on article). Non-Beer A-9s have seen prices drop as eBay eBay about 4 years ago. At the time he was going to colcontinually has a steady stream of this style being listed lect wire openers but in the last few months decided to for sale. Even the more common beer ones are struggling sell off his wire collection. He also had the E-14-849 to break the $40 price barrier. Just remember the cycle Wachter and the E-4 Caton Cigars. may be a little down now but can turn back up at anytime when some new buyers enter the market. 25TH YEAR ISSUE JUST FOR OPENERS OCTOBER 2003 PAGE 20 “Opener and eBay Trivia” “F” Kitchen tools were pretty dominated by soda brands selling well. One surprise was the F-12 Horsford Baking Powder going for $191.50. I did not realize this was so desirable. Mike Krejci wanted the “New Discovery F” Gutsch kitchen tool similar to an F-12 but instead of a slotted spoon, it has a measuring spoon. Mike will send pictures for next year’s “New Discoveries”. Cast iron figurals continue to see the common and repro openers constantly offered for sale on eBay. Some of the good examples that sold are shown highlighted by the “Skull” opener at $1,026.00. Sandra Emme did pass along that Les Zakarin passed away. He was one of the original 12 founding members of the Figural Bottle Opener Club (FBOC). His family sold part of his collection on eBay and allowed the club to sell some of the collection at their annual convention this past July. The highlight of that auction was the F-422 Amish Man bringing $3,800.00. “G” type saw limited sales for better brands, but Dr Pepper easily led the way with $150.00 for G-4. “H”s saw the person who has found a pile of what was a tough opener, H-3-48 Koenig, continue to list them at a starting price of $9.99. I think everyone who needs one in JFO has this opener by now. A near complete set of “H-8”s (missing 1 of the Arrow beer openers) brought a decent price at $146.50. As is becoming the case with eBay, so many different “H-8”s are offered that is not that hard to get most of the known ones. Getting real nice condition “H-8”s is another story, even for many of the common ones. high at $82.01. No other surprises in the “N”s except for the N-68-1 Kittanning knife. Maybe some other collectors have turned this one up, but when Don and I did the JFO book in 1998 we had to borrow the knife from Tom Zruno’s daughter. Tom had originally discovered it and even with two worn blades was the only example we knew of at that time. The one I got on eBay for $84.99 is in great shape. Starr openers continued to see strong sales. This area always seems to attract “New Blood” and even though prices can fluctuate pretty wildly, the good openers always seem to bring good money. One example is the O-5 Pep (the one with Made In The U. S. A. on the back, not the newer German version). The $200-300 price it brings is always consistent. Competition is very tough for the good Starr openers. Just be ready to pay the big bucks if you want to collect these. A nice O-12-1 Pabst brought $250.00 (from Dave Lendy’s collection). The Starr Coca -Cola corkscrew wall mounts saw some strong bidding and price results. These had been selling in the $50-100 price range. “P” corkscrews have a lot of results because the market was somewhat flooded with a 2001 Champagne Knife put out by Anheuser-Busch to celebrate their 125th year (I presume 125 years of Budweiser). The knife was made in China and supposedly given out at a 2001 Sales Convention. The first one brought $609.00 but the price has been going down to the $200 range as more are offered. I have not actually seen one to check out he quality, so I will wait to make any comments when I have actually held one. They come in a nice wooden box. As more “K”s and “L”s saw little this action quarter, but a nice K- come on the market we will see where the price ends up. 9-1 Blatz sold for $167.59. Common sliders were prevalent and Art Johnson got real lucky on a previously unA decent P-7 Coca-Cola sold for only $79.99 (condition known non-beer one from the Ritz Carlton Hotel New seemed to be a problem). The only other one of these I York City. Harold Queen got a nice buy on the M-3 have ever seen is in Judy Jay’s soda collection (but hers is Electro-Chemical (Green) at $42.01. I will never understand how someone can sell so wall mount was offered with no paint. The ending price many repros of one opener as the lucky seller has on the did not meet reserve (DNMR). M-19 Coca-Cola. But one finally went reasonable at $14.50. I really wanted and ended up with the M-26-UL The general corkscrew market continued strong as a wide Ontario from Oswego, NY. Has $305.00 anyone ever seen the actual opener? This supposedly M-25-UL AnheuserBusch sold recently on eBay for $130. Until now only a Lemp was known in the style (with US beer ad). $960.00 Have any of you Missouri members seen this before??? This is the P-5 C. Conrad & Co. Original Budweiser & Moss Rose Bourbon I bought last quarter on eBay for $335.00. First one I have had a chance to buy. Carl Conrad invented Budweiser and eventually sold the brand to Anheuser-Busch. $810.00 Jeb Burruss spotted this K-6-UL Southern Select Beer bar mount in a Texas collection. Them boys in Texas find good openers. M-73 unknown liquor found on eBay by new member Art Conner and traded to slider guru Art Johnson. 25TH YEAR ISSUE JUST FOR OPENERS OCTOBER 2003 PAGE 25 JFO and OTHER CLUBS (Newsletter Name in Italics All Clubs Offer an Annual Convention) —————————————————————————————————————————————————————————– American Breweriana Association (ABA): American Breweriana Journal (bi-monthly) on breweriana collecting.
