Ratios
Life is all about ratios, or, at least, about getting them right.
The golden mean. The Pareto principle. The ratio of whisky to
vermouth in a Perfect Manhattan (some would say none; it’s a
terrible thing to do to good scotch).
You’ll probably agree that it’s true about so much of our daily
lives, too, and not just high-falutin’ philosophy. You try to watch
what you eat and drink (or you should), seeking balance in your
diet. We try to save some money and spend some money. We
seek balance between our family lives and our work lives. We
balance our own needs against those of others.
What prompted this? Well, there was an interesting letter in
the most recent Roundel where a member from the Dallas area
expressed his disbelief that there was no BMW CCA presence
at the local Dallas car show. Satch’s response was spot-on,
challenging the letter writer by asking him if he was active in the
chapter to help make it happen.
So why is this relevant to the Delaware Valley Chapter of the
BMW CCA? Well, I’m glad you asked (you did, didn’t you?). Well,
we have some interesting ratios, too:
There are just over 2,000 members in our local chapter. Of all of
you, maybe 200, or 10%, turn out to one or more of the events
we organise throughout the year, whether a social event like
our annual picnic, driving events such as our well-regarded high
performance driving schools, or those that mix both, like our gokarting nights. In turn, there are roughly 20 people, or just 1%
of the members of our chapter, who do all the work to make this
happen.
No, none of us are asking for any reward, other than the enjoyment
and participation of those who would like to join our events, but
we are a 100% volunteer organisation. All of us, at the local
level. Even at BMW CCA National, there are only a handful of paid
employees. This is our club: It belongs to and is run by and for
the benefit of all of us.
Now, you’re all smart folks (you must be, just look at the car you
drive), so I’m sure you know by now where I’m going with this. We
need YOU! No, this is not some corny Uncle Sam recruiting poster,
but encouragement: If you would like to see a particular sort of
event, let us know. Better yet, jump in and help to organise it.
Think we’re doing a poor job in some area? Let us know, and how
you can help. Better yet, run for office at our annual election.
Think it can’t be done? Think again! A couple of years ago, two
long-term members, Bill Foster and Dennis Brennan, had not
been as active in club events as they were in the past. But they
felt that other club members would share their interest in older
BMWs, so they approached the chapter to take over the dormant
Vintage Group. As a result of their efforts, and the participation
of other club members who love older BMWs (you don’t need to
own one to enjoy the vintage group), they have a monthly event,
at least when it’s not snowing! In May they went to the Carlisle
Imports car show, driving in a convoy, and in June they’re set
to caravan together to enjoy some special events at New Jersey
Motorsports Park.
So, you have a special interest? Want to see a local focus to our
club for our members in, say, Delaware or Reading? Contact me
about setting up and publicising the event. Think you’d like to
see a group for the spouses of club members? Reach out to help
us make it happen. Bring us YOUR ideas for YOUR club. Step up
and volunteer: We always need help at our events, and it’s a great
way to make friends in the club.
The BMW CCA isn’t just the Roundel, dealer discounts, and rebates
on new BMWs. It’s much more than that: It’s the people. I invite
you to be one of those people.

Home Town:I
was
actually
stumped by this question. As a kid
we moved a lot and lived in many
towns in Bucks and Montgomery
counties: Chalfont, Green Lane,
Harleysville, Salford, Pennsburg,
Red Hill, East Greenville, Lansdale,
and Souderton.

Stone
Now resides in: Holland, PA, just
outside of Newtown…no, not
Newtown Square.
Spouse: Celebrating 15 years of
marriage to Alison on May 15th.
Children: Healey, our four-legged,
hair shedding son.
First Car: In order to get my license I
had to own a car outright and have a
year’s worth of insurance saved up.
I wasn’t really too worried about
what it was, because I knew when I
turned 18 I was going to get the car
I really wanted. I bought a terrible
‘78 Nova (it did have an I6 under
the hood, so that should count
for something, right?) for $1000.
I really hated that car, but it was
mine, and I knew it was temporary.
My dad promised me that when I
turned 18 I would get his ‘66 Austin
Healey 3000 Mk III I had learned
to drive in when I was 13 (more on
that later). Unfortunately my dad
totaled the car a few months before
I turned 18. Don’t drink and drive,
people. It crushes your kids’ hopes
and dreams.
What’s in your garage now: Current
fleet consists of Alison’s ‘97 Acura
Integra that mostly just sits and
leaks oil; an ‘05 Scion tC, which
is mostly relegated to dog hauler
duty; a ‘99 BMW M3 Coupe track
toy and weekend fun car; and the
very new ‘15 Subaru WRX, which
is a company project car and future
track car.
Other interesting cars you’ve owned:
I owned a slew of terrible cars
out of convenience but the first
interesting one was the first sport
compact performance car I owned
: A ’98 VW GTI I bought in 2003.
I did a lot of work to that car and
sunk lots of money into it. I sold
off my Hasselblad camera to pay
for a supercharger and did a lot of
beta testing for Bahn Brenner. A few
short months after installing the
twin screws I was sick of the car as
it was almost undriveable, but oh,
so much fun to autocross and drive
when it did work right.
My first track car was a ‘93 Mazda
Miata. I picked up the Miata in
2007 after I watched a guy wad
up a Z06 at WGI and act like it
was no big deal. That was my fifth
HPDE (third at WGI) and realized
I couldn’t afford to wad up my tC
so I needed a “disposable” car. A
$4500 Miata was the perfect answer.
It had no heat, no AC, no PS, and
no convertible top (hard top or no
top), but it had a roll bar,
good seats, Schroth belts,
and was an absolute blast
to drive. I learned a huge
amount about driving
from that car.
Favorite saying: He may
have put the motor at the
wrong end of the car, but
I agree with Ferdinand
Porsche’s sentiment that,
“if one does not fail at
times, then one has not
challenged
himself.”
My other favorite is
a line from Hunter S
Thompson, “Faster, faster, until the
thrill of speed overcomes the fear
of death.” Neither of these match
my very risk adverse personality,
and that’s probably why they are
mantras for me. I use them to help
push me outside of my comfort
zone. Anyone that knows me, has
ridden with me, or raced against
and friendliness made a strong case
for CCA membership. I joined the
club, not because of the BMWs, but
because of the people,
Since then Alison and I have been
to many of the club’s social and
on-track functions and have made
many lasting friendships. We both
look forward to many years of fun,
on and off the track.
Other hobbies/interests:
I am pretty one-dimensional. I eat,
sleep, and breathe cars. I remember
seeing pictures of all the cool cars
my dad had before I came along.
His ’69 Chevelle SS and ’71 Super
Beetle were worked over and saw
regular passes down the ¼ mile.
When I turned 12 he bought and
restored the Austin Healey from a
neglected barn find. He had a B13
Nissan Sentra SE-R, which was the
first “sport compact” I ever flogged
and has a Miata now. My step-dad
was similar; a ’68 Camaro and ’67
me knows I don’t take unnecessary
risks on the track, on the street, or in
any other matters.
Best part of being a Del Val club
member: The very first HPDE I ever
did in the M3 was how I found
out about the BMW-CCA. It was
a non-BMW-CCA event at NJMP
Lightning and my M3’s bitch-clip
vacated its position during my
very first session out with the car.
I knew nothing about E36s yet and
walked the paddock until I found
the only other BMW at the event.
It happened to be Jeff Caldwell. I
asked him if he had any ideas on
why my shifter stopped working
and he knew right away what it
was.
He looked under the car to confirm,
then got on his cell to call Andrew
Zimmerman of Drive Gear who
was at Thunderbolt. I picked up
the spare part and Jeff installed
it in minutes, didn’t even miss a
session. Jeff and Andrew’s help
Corvair where in his garage for
many years and now he has added
a couple FD RX-7s.
As a kid I would watch any races
my dad and I could find on TV.
IMSA, Can-Am, F1, NASCAR, it
didn’t matter. If it had four wheels
(or six in the case of that Tyrell)
and a motor and was racing, we
watched it. During my teen years I
spent many weekend nights either
at Grandview Speedway with my
step-dad or at Cecil County drag
strip with my dad.
I remember going to my first SCCA
autocross when I was 13. My dad
5
ran the big Healey a couple of times.
Then at one event I took a few
passes as him (back in the mid-80s
rule policing and enforcement were
a little lax, plus he and I were the
same size). I was instantly hooked
and looked forward to having a car,
the time and money to autocross as
much as possible.
I Didn’t have the time or money
to participate in motorsports
again until ‘00 when I joined the
Philadelphia region SCCA and
started autocrossing with them.
Between ’00 and ‘13 I autocrossed
as often as I could. I have driven
everything from my ’98 GTI and my
Miata, to an ’03 Evo, a ‘79 LeGrand
(a 7/8 scale McLaren Can-Am tube
frame car), and a 125cc shifter karts
all owned by my friend, Adam.
6
My first HPDE was with NASA at
Watkins Glen in 2006. I progressed
up their ranks for a little while,
attending additional events at WGI,
Pocono, Summit Point, and NJMP
with NASA, PCA, SCCA, and
TrackDaze. In 2009 I took part in my
first wheel-to-wheel race: I drove a
1990 Audi 90 Quattro in a LeMons
race at Carolina Motorsports Park.
Our team was one of 120-something
on the very small track. It was trial
by fire, and I came out unscathed.
I’ve since done other LeMons and
Chump races at VIR, NJMP, WGI,
Summit Point, and Nelson Ledges,
having driven in Integras, E30s,
Miatas, and E36s.
In 2012 I attended and passed the
SCCA competition school in a
borrowed Spec E30. Oddly enough,
Andrew of Drive Gear once again
saved me from a “mechanical”
failure. I backed out from under
my EZ-Up and cut the wheel too
early catching the right front on the
staked-in upright, and ripped half of
the bumper cover off. Andrew was
paddocked next to me and made
some hasty repairs, reattaching
the bumper with a sheet metal
screw, which held for the rest of
the weekend (and is probably still
holding that bumper on).
One of my favorite things to do is
teach new drivers, whether it be in an
HPDE, autocross, or a teen driving
school. I had been instructing in
autocross since 2007, about the
same time I started instructing at
SCCA/BMW CCA Street Survival
schools. I took the leap into HPDE
instruction with TrackDaze back in
2010. I have instructed for NJMP’s
private events and with Hooked
On Driving and the SCCA. In 2013
I attended and passed the BMWCCA ITS. Even though I had several
years of instructing under my belt,
I still learned a huge amount about
how to be an effective instructor and
mentor to new drivers. The BMW
CCA ITS is by far the best instructor
education out there and it shows in
the quality of drivers at BMW CCA
HPDEs.
Fortunately I was able to find a
career, albeit after a bit of wandering,
that allows me to use my passion for
all things automotive performance
each and every day. I started with
JSC Speed in 2006 doing sales for this
young, import performance e-tailer.
I was, and still am, older than most
of my associates and clients, but I
am young at heart so it works out
well. I became General Manager
and began running all aspects of
the company in 2010. Just this year
I was given the opportunity to buy
the company. Being risk adverse, it
has been difficult to put myself out
there and take such a big chance, but
I couldn’t say no.
While most of JSC Speed’s customer
base are from Japanese marques we
sell products for pretty much any
make and model cars and trucks.
Most of our customers are shade
tree mechanics who are Subaru
WRX and STI owners, which is why
I just got the 2015 WRX. You will
surely see the JSC Speed WRX at a
few BMW-CCA HPDEs this year.
The M3 needs to get some attention
in the form of a refreshed engine; it
did 35+ HPDEs in the last two years
and has 170,000 miles on the original
head and motor.

See what I mean by “special needs”?
Frankly, I don’t know how any of
you get anything done. In theory,
I have been bred to have this
phenomenal gift to herd sheep
(even dumber than humans) in
a snow storm for 12 hours, but I
sooooo don’t have time for that.
I am all about things with wheels.
And poultry…I am something of a
connoisseur of poultry, but let’s not
get too far off topic, shall we? I just
don’t understand what’s with this
whole sound thing. On Sundays,
mom and I snuggle up and watch
Formula One. Since my namesake
“Quick Nick” Heidfeld isn’t there
anymore, now I like Kimi best—
he’s a dude. Leave him alone, he
knows what to do…This USED to
be one of my very favorite things,
until some time this year this
UNGODLY
SCREECHING
started coming out of our tv. I
mean, WOAH, this is more than
a guy like me can take. WHAT
is going on there??? It’s not the
tv, I know ‘cause I checked it out.
It’s the cars. And as if it wasn’t
bad enough that my Sundays are
ruined, mom left with our diesel
one day and came home with this…
thing. I was pretty sure it must have
been DYING based on the wheezy
sneezing it was doing. If I made
that noise, I guarantee you I would
get a quick trip to the vet for some
antibiotics. JEEEEEZZZZZ. She
said the diesel was having a service
and this would be our car
for the day. That I shouldn’t
panic because it was just a
loaner. Ah, ok, couple things
here. First of all, BMW,
please roll up a newspaper
and hit yourself with it. BAD

LOOK AT WHAT YOU
DID!!!! Same goes for you
Bernie Ecclestone. If I could
give you a time out in your
crate, I totally would. BAD
BOY. Not sure if this new
awful F1 noise is Bernie’s
fault, really, but I’m pretty
sure he deserves a time out.
In his crate. For a while. At
the very least, you all need to
stop pulling the plug on my
funk¬¬--pronto.
Ok, so, we finally get to the track
this year after being cooped up
since October, where there are
REAL cars to listen to and…uh,
hold on a second…
Hey, YOU—yeah—guy walking
the black lab—THIS IS NOT
YOUR HOUSE. THIS IS NOT
YOUR YARD. KEEP MOVING
BUDDY. Wait, no, I take it
back…hey, my name is Nick. I
have toys—HEEEEY, COME
AND PLAY WITH ME—SEE???
I HAVETOY((SQQQUUUEEE

Well, that was disappointing.
Where were we? Oh yeah…real
cars at the track. Ok, most of you
get this, so I won’t harp on it. Cars
at the track need cow bell. Lotsa
cow bell. BUT, there is a law of
diminishing returns. Loudness to
the point of ear bleeding just makes
you look like a tool. Louder is not
necessarily better without a better
tone. Resonate, people. It’s not too
much to ask.
already and LISTEN. Not that the
discussion at hand is really all that
fascinating. I mean, really, HOW
MANY times do we need to go
over passing zones? If you haven’t
figured out where the passing zones
are by now, I mean except maybe
the one poor slob who has never
seen this particular track before—I
mean, I get it, there’s a first time for
everyone, but dude…get the notes
from someone after class. And for
the love of Dog, the guy doing the
passing goes OFF LINE, so pass on
the side that is appropriate based
on the upcoming turn. SHEESH.
I needed to get that out.
Again, with the rolled up

from now on and anytime

BEHAVIOR. That’s right.
A lot of you haven’t figured
out how to be a dude. That’s
right. I’m talking to YOU.
See, we do this to have FUN,
which if I’m being honest
is really the only reason to
do anything at all. Having
fun involves being a good friend
and making new ones and gaining
people’s respect by trying hard to
learn and be a good driver. You
know, someone people want to
be around. Some of you have this
figured out in spades and others…
not so much. The only way to do
this is by being a dude. Here’s what
a dude does NOT do:
Speaking of resonating…can we
talk about the instructor meetings?
I have attended every one and
here’s why: SOMEONE has to
herd you num-nums into the room.
If it weren’t for me, no one would
ever get there on time, of this I
am certain. Once all you slackers
shuffle in, I try to make the rounds
and while it’s great that you pat
me and tell me how cute I am, you
all seem completely oblivious to 1.

good reason other than the fact that
you feel you are entitled to do so. Uhuh. There’s a big bucket of nope right
there.

Pouring ludicrous sums of
money into your car to go faster.
Seriously, become a better driver by
listening to your instructor, practicing
and then when you’ve gotten
everything out of what you have, open
the wallet. Baby steps, man, baby steps.
Otherwise, everyone will think you’re
a dork.
3.
Showing up to your first driver
school in a brand new Nomex fire suit,
shoes, freshly built racecar with a full
cage and a copy of “Going Faster” with
post-it notes marking special pages on
the front seat. Stop laughing; my mom
had this guy as a student. Again…
dork.
4.

5.
Seeing someone who needs
help and keeping to yourself or walking

6. Stealing someone’s parking
space or fighting over a parking space.
I watch this same stupid fight at every
single event and I will never, ever get it.
Seriously, if walking an extra 50 feet is
going to do you in, you should spend
more time at the gym. Just sayin’.
7.
Hanging at the bar with your
peeps after a long day and not picking
up the tab once in a while. Also if
you have beers in your cooler—share.
Spread the love. It’s what a dude does.
I could go on, but let’s just think of
this as a primer. If you’re cool and nice
to people, they will be nice back and
if they don’t…pee on their tires. Well,
16
that’s what I would do…use your best
judgment.
Speaking of letters to the editor, I will
give my final piece of advice. If for

We Couldn’t do Jefferson... but you are in luck, there’s more!
Well, if the past winter had been closer to normal,
I’d be writing about our successful first driver’s
school at the Jefferson circuit at Summit Point, but
that is not the way things worked out. As you may
recall, the winter kept on dishing out bad news all
the way through early April as we learned from
the management at Summit Point that due to the
severity of the winter’s weather, the new Jefferson
extension would not be available to us for our
scheduled event on the 5th and 6th of April. The
contractor had apparently not turned the new section
of the circuit over to the track for the completion of
the remaining work to be done (run offs, etc.). Even
as I write this, the Summit Point website does not
indicate when the new section will be completed and
available for club events.
So please pull out last year’s May newsletter and have
a look at the track fun we could have had…
Turning attention to more, better news, the driving
season is now firmly underway, and we still have
three great events scheduled:
In July on the 9th and 10th: Two days of HPDE fun at
the incomparable Watkins Glen International – this is
a mid week event in the heart of upstate New York’s
vacation country – if fact, there is a wine festival right
at the track immediately following our event. Why
not bring a significant other and make an extra long
weekend of it?
In August on the 22nd, 23rd and 24th: Three day
weekend (!!) at the Lightning circuit at New Jersey
Motorsports Park. We’ll be running an advanced
drivers and instructors day on the 22nd, followed
by a four hour BMW CCA Endurance race in the
late afternoon. The 23rd and 24th will feature our
signature HPDE experience, plus a single run group
set of Sprint races, also run under the auspices of
BMW CCA club racing.
And in October on the 4th and 5th: A two day fall
spectacular on the southeast road course at Pocono
Raceway.
Check these great events out using this link http://dvc.motorsportreg.com/
We’ll see you at the track!

The story below summarizes our most recent TireRack™ Street Survival event this past April in Blue Bell. We are in the planning stages our next Street

updates on this website. Schedule information is also available here: http://streetsurvival.org/school-schedule-registration/

TireRack™ Street Survival
Saturday April 26, 2014
Montgomery County Community College,
Blue Bell, PA
Our most recent TireRack Street Survival event
was held on Saturday April 26. The day dawned
cool, and there was a threat of rain in the
forecast, but by late afternoon all remained
dry and members of our latest graduating class
were practicing what they had learned on a
mini-autocross course.
26 teen drivers, along with their parents and
a team of over 40 volunteers from BMW CCA
Delaware Valley Chapter, SCCA Philadelphia
Region, and PCA – Riesentoter Region all came
together for a day of classroom instruction,
behind the wheel training, and a whole bunch
of “Ah Ha!” moments with their coaches.
The volunteers began arriving around 7 am, and
the students around 8. By 9 the students had
met their coaches for the day that checked out
their cars to make sure they were safe, which
included checking tire pressures for proper
inflation. They also reviewed the proper driving
position.
From there everyone went into the classroom
at Montco for a brief introduction to the day’s
agenda. Then it was time for all students to get
in their cars for the morning’s first exercise – a
wake up drill of straight line braking. What a
site to see the kids in their cars, mashing the go
pedal to the floor and then hitting the brakes
hard at the braking point marked by green
cones. Some were timid, others were on it! The
parents looking on cheered and applauded the
efforts of their kids!
The group then split into two smaller groups
– some in the classroom, others in their cars
tackling the skid pad with water supplied by the
Center Square Fire Department until they had to
leave for a fire...
...then it was a non-stop bottle brigade lead by
DelVal BMW club’s very own Lore Kline!, and
plenty of soap to keep things interesting...
Our awesome volunteers set up a mini autocross
course while the graduation ceremony was
going on. We took our class picture, and then
it was back to the cars for those students that
wanted to take a crack at the mini course. Most
stayed and ran the course! It was great to see
the dramatic change in their confidence behind
the wheel from the wake up exercise in the
morning to their attack of the mini course at
the end of the day. Everyone involved left with
big smiles on their faces, having had fun while
learning to be better drivers!
and also the brake with turning exercise. After
the exercises were completed, the two groups
traded places and we ran the classroom/driving
sessions a second time.
Before we knew it, lunch time had arrived. It
was great to see the kids, parents, coaches
and volunteers all enjoying the beautiful day
and getting to know each other better. Before
lunch was over, the course had been reset
into a slalom and a lane change exercise. The
two groups then rotated back through the
classroom/driving sessions again. By 3 PM it
was time for student and parent evaluations and
graduation where each student received their
Street Survival certificate.
