The Secret to Brian Sears' Success? Perhaps It's
"The Manager"
By Bill Finley
Driver Brian Sears is so good that it sometimes seems like
he has a secret weapon, something beyond ability that
separates him from the rest. And maybe he does.
If you've been to Yonkers lately you've seen him. You
couldn't possibly not. Dressed in white from head to toe, he
darts and dashes across the apron, does his dance and,
most all, helps will his hero Brian Sears to the wire. His
name is John Cutrone, but you know him as "The Manager."
His role is to
help Sears win,
and he has no
doubt that he is
playing at least
some part in the
success of the
top driver at
Yonkers
Raceway.
"Can
someone make
“The Manager” (Lizzi photo)
someone who is
great even
greater?" asks The Manager. "Can you take something that
is perfect and make it even better? Is there a force that is
unseen to mankind? Is there something that flows through
the air between two minds that have a direct angle? The
Manager believes so. The Manager has perfected the power
of suggestion that flows through the air unseen and the
power of influence and learned how to master it."
Yes, he's serious. Completely.
"I go with the power of influence and the power of
suggestion," The Manager said. "I give him a boost before
the race when I yell. I give him a little more energy."
Cutrone is 52, unemployed and lives in Sheepshead Bay,
Brooklyn. He said he has been attending the harness races
for more than 20 years but until he became "The Manager"
he was just another face in the crowd at the Meadowlands,
Yonkers and his local OTB branch.
That all changed on a night at the Meadowlands in 2012
when he saw that Sears was driving a horse named Get
Packin. He liked Sears's nickname and when Get Packin
came on the track he called out to him.
"I saw the W hite Knight and I started going crazy on the
apron, calling out ‘W hite Knight, W hite Knight,’" he said.
"That horse, Get Packin, won and he started winning and
winning and I thought we have a good thing here."
Over time Cutrone seemed to conclude that the
nickname the "W hite Knight" didn't do Sears justice. Now,
he mainly refers to him as the "King" or the "King of the
Universe."
W hen Sears decided to drive full time at Yonkers in
2013, The Manager took things to the next level. He was
determined to never miss any of his drives there and
started to dress in all white. He is very proud of the fact
that since 2013 he has been at Yonkers for all but three of
Sears's wins.
That has taken some doing. Cutrone does not drive and
must rely on public transportation to get to the track. W ith
Yonkers racing at night, it is particularly hard for him to get
home and he says he usually doesn't arrive back at his
door until 3:15 am. This was among the worst winters in
New York history, but the freezing cold didn't faze The
Manager.
"One night I left Sheepshead Bay and it was 2 degrees,
but I said if the King is out there doing what he has to do
then The Manager has to be by his side," he said. "I
wouldn't do that to the King, make him come out in the
cold like that and leave him flat ."
Before every race in which Sears drives, The Manager
takes his spot along the apron. He prances back and forth
while the gate gets rolling and when the field comes by he
struts back and forth nervously. He cannot stand still. As
the field comes by the first time, he'll call out to Sears.

During Tuesday's second race, which would be won by
Sears, he yelled out "You've got to work hard to beat the
King. The King is
always coming."
As the field heads
into the stretch for
the second time
he chases the
field down the
stretch at a dead
sprint, hoping it
ends in the
winner's circle for
both him and his

Manager will
appear in the winner's circle photos along with Sears.
"W e are the best driver-fan team in the history of harness
racing," Cutrone said.
For his part, Sears has been a good sport about the whole
thing.
"He's always been very respectful to me," he said. "He has
a good attitude, that's for sure."
Cutrone seems to understand that there are lines that
cannot be crossed. He says he has no personal relationship
with Sears and has never made any attempt to interact with
him beyond his rituals on the apron.
"W hen I see him, it's just like ‘hi, how ya doing,'" Cutrone
said. "Everything is good. No big talk. There's just some
nods, knowing that we're both there for each other. That's
how it works and I don't want to break that. I don't want it
to get too personal. I've never once went around to where
the drivers park. I don't go back to the paddock. People
say why don't you go meet him. No, I don't want to do that.
I don't want to get to know him personally. If I do it might
become something different."
The Manager said some aren't enamored with his
routines.
"Most of the fans are good," he said. "I have some
mockers but I can deal with them."
He doesn't bet: "W hat I am doing doesn't have anything
to do with betting. If he wins, I win, no matter what," he
said.
He does follow Sears to the Meadowlands when he
drives there but isn't able to get to any other tracks
because he doesn't drive.
In races in which Sears isn't driving he will not root for
anyone else and says he has turned down offers from
trainers to use his powers to help their horses, ones not
driven by Sears, win.
"A trainer came up to me at the Meadowlands and said,
"Please Manager, can you root for my horse next race?' I
said I am sorry I cannot do that. He said if I win the next
race I want you to come to winner's circle and I said I

cannot do that and they understood that."
He is now on Twitter, but it’s not him, but rather a
“Manager” wannabe. Cutrone does not have a computer.
Sears won again in Tuesday's fourth, and in the fifth, eighth
and twelfth, five winners in all. The last race ended at about
11:10 and The Manager began the trip back to Brooklyn. It
was a long night and he would not get home for nearly four
hours. But it had been worth it. It was a good night for Sears.
It was a better one for "The Manager."

They not necessarily looking for top horses but for ones
they know they can some money with."
Both trainers like the idea of 2-year-old sales and think
the concept will only grow form here.
"Hopefully, this is the start of something really good,"
Campbell said. "I know there are a lot of people when
sitting around Harrisburg watching a yearling sell for
$3,000 or $5,000 and will think I like the way that yearling
looks. If people know there is this sale every year, a lot of
people will probably jump in buy that cheaper yearling,
hoping he trains down good and put them in this sale. I
hope that it's something that will be successful and take
off. The more opportunities to move horses around, for
buyers and sellers the better. It keeps the business
strong."
A Look at the 2-Year Roster for the May 18 Sale
What to Expect at May 18 2-Year-Old Sale
By Bill Finley
W hen 22 two-year-olds head into the sales ring on May 18
at the Meadowlands as part of the Spring Mixed sale they'll
be heading into
unknown territory.
W hile 2-year-old
sales are a huge
part of the thoroughbred industry they have been few and far
between in harness racing, which means no one really
knows what to expect. But some trainers think 2-year-old
sales are here to stay and that this one might just prove to
be a good opportunity for buyers and sellers alike.
Joe Holloway has the largest contingent in the 2-year-old
portion of the sale with six. He explains that these horses
look like they will be good but not superstars and that his
primary owners Marty Granoff and Ted Gewertz are only
interested in superstars.
"The people I train for want top stakes horses and if it
doesn't look like the horse is going to be one, they're not
interested.," he said. "They want to race horses like
Shebestingin and Somwherovrarainbow. They don't even
want a sire stakes horse. I have some horses in there that
won't win the Breeders Crown but I wouldn't be at all
surprised if they won sire stakes."
Holloway said his horses have trained down to the 2:12
neighborhood and said he's not treating them any differently
than any of his other 2-year-olds or winding them up early so
they look fast for prospective buyers.
Trainer Jim Campbell has two in the sale and said for him
and primary owner Fashion Farms it's a matter of simply
having too many horses.
"Fashion Farms owns over 35 horses and while there's
nothing wrong with these horses there are other ones that
we like better this time of year and it comes down to a
numbers thing, " he said. "W e have to weed a few out. They
all nicely bred horses and they're both Pennsylvania-sired.
With a lot of guys out there that's what they're looking for.

Uncle Peter Ready for Copenhagen Cup
By Ken Weingartner
Uncle Peter will prep for the Elitlopp, to be held May 25 in
Sweden, by facing nine rivals in Sunday’s Copenhagen Cup
at Charlottenlund Travbane in Denmark.
Trained by Jimmy Takter, Uncle Peter will be handled by
his regular driver, David Miller, in the 1-1/4 mile race, which
has a purse of $140,000 for the winner. Uncle Peter drew
post No. 1.
Defending Copenhagen Cup champion Mr Picolit will start
from post three. The field also includes Kash’s Cantab,
Solvato, and Magic Tonight – all who began their careers in
the U.S. and were stakes winners. Solvato, incidentally, was
bred by a group headed by Takter’s wife, Christina, and is a
full brother to Takter’s star filly Shake It Cerry.
The 5-year-old Uncle Peter arrived overseas early
Wednesday morning. He enters the Copenhagen Cup off a
half-length win over Sevruga in 1:52.1 on May 2 at
Meadowlands Racetrack. A week earlier, he was second in
his seasonal debut, finishing 1-1/2 lengths behind Modern
Family in 1:51.1.
“Against those horses (in the Copenhagen Cup), I think
he’s pretty comparable,” Takter said about Uncle Peter, who
has won 13 of 37 career races and $1.18 million for owners
Christina Takter, Brixton Medical AB, John and Jim Fielding,
and Goran Falk. “It’s probably a softer field than is going to
be in the Elitlopp. There also is a big race Saturday in
Finland, so some horses will be there.”
Uncle Peter is the only one of seven confirmed Elitlopp
invitees competing in the Copenhagen Cup. Others
expected in the Elitlopp, according to its website, are Maven,
Pascia ’Lest, Panne de Moteur, Timoko, Reven d’Amour,
and Shaq Is Back. The field for the Elitlopp will consist of 16
horses.
Takter won the Elitlopp and Copenhagen Cup with Moni
Maker in 1998. Moni Maker, a two-time Horse of the Year
Award winner, died May 2 at the age of 21.
“I haven’t been back since Moni Maker won it,” Takter said.
“It would be exciting to go back and win the race after Moni
Maker just passed away.
“You’ve got to take a shot. If you’re not in it, you can’t win
it.”
Takter was unconcerned about the extra distance in the
Copenhagen Cup, but thought Uncle Peter’s post could be a
disadvantage.
“The two horses outside of him (Kash’s Cantab and Mr
Picolit) are extremely quick; they can leave faster than
anyone,” Takter said. “You can get into a little trouble
there.”
The style of racing is
different in Europe,
Takter said, so it was
good Miller was going
to get a few drives
under his belt before
the Elitlopp.
“It’s really tough
racing over there,” said
Takter, a native of
Uncle Peter drew post one for
Sweden who has lived
Sunday’s Copenhagen Cup
in the U.S. for more
than three decades. “You’re getting drivers from a bunch of
different countries and the driving is way different from our
style. You almost get shocked when you see some of
those races. They’re parking each other, it’s tight, you
don’t get any position, they keep you out three wide. It’s
not easy.
“It’s good for David. He’s going to drive Uncle Peter and
we got another drive for him Sunday. He can get a little
familiar to European driving. David is a professional. I’m
sure he will study the races and watch (video) so he is
familiar with the style of racing. There is a horse outside all
the time over there. It’s tactic driven.”
In addition to Uncle Peter in the Copenhagen Cup,
Takter’s 4-year-old male trotter Corky will race on the
undercard. Corky won last year’s Beal Memorial and has
earned $897,465 for owners Christina Takter and John
and Jim Fielding.
“He’s in a race for 4-year-olds, about $60,000 purse,”
Takter said. “I figure it’s good for him to go over and not
have to race against the (older) horses here. He can do
three or four starts over there. If I’m going to send one
horse over there, I might as well send two.”
Following is the field in post order for the Copenhagen
Cup, with listed drivers: 1. Uncle Peter, David Miller; 2.
Kash’s Cantab, Erik Adielsson; 3. Mr Picolit, Jorma Kontio;
4. Orali, Jeppe Juel; 5. Solvato, Veijo Heiskanen; 6.
Beckman, Franck Nivard; 7. Mosaique Face, Lutfi Kolgjini;
8. Harry Haythrow, Peter Untersteiner; 9. Magic Tonight,
Orjan Kihlstrom; 10. Caballion, Bjorn Goop.

Bridgejumpers Get Smoked at Chester
It was a tough day to be a heavy show bettor yesterday at
Chester. In the 14th race there yesterday the public pounded
Always B Mike down to 1-9 favoritism. All hope looked lost
when the pacer broke after the half but Corey Callahan got
him back on gear and he closed like a train to cross the wire
a nose in front. But the judges took the horse down and
placed him last. W hen that happened the winner He’s a Lock
paid $32.60 to win and $34,00 to show. The other show
prices were $26.60 and $38.80

Chase Business Ad Campaign Features Blue Chip
Farms
by Ellen Harvey, Harness Racing Communications
Freehold, NJ --- Like most seemingly effortless artistic
endeavors, the short film shoot for Chase Bank Platinum
Business Services at Blue Chip Farms took time, a lot of
time. Three days, in fact.
“It was a huge production,” said Blue Chip owner Tom
Grossman, of the two-and-a-half minute production designed
to highlight how Chase Bank can help businesses.
“They must have had 25 or 30 people following us around
the farm,” he said. “W e’ve been a Chase customer for years
and years. Our business has gotten much more complicated
and getting payments from Canada, Australia, New Zealand
became very difficult. At times, they have really helped us.
“It’s all sorts of things, like being able to scan checks. Little
things that don’t seem like a lot but the truth is, we’ve
doubled or tripled our business and our office staff has not
really increased. I have great staff, but a lot of it is
technology and outsourcing headaches to them.”
Blue Chip was approached by Chase, who was looking for
unusual types of businesses to highlight in their advertising.
“W e had four or five meetings with the Chase people and
then the crew from California descended on us in
mid-March,” said Grossman. “They came ahead of time and
they were rushing to get it done because of the snow, even
though it’s a challenge to shoot in the snow.
“I can’t tell you how many hours of video they shot. They
could tell we were really excited about our business and they
are the same about theirs. It was really a fun few days.”
The race horses were filmed at Pine Bush Training Facility,
a private training center a few miles from the farm. Many
farm staff made cameo appearances, including Nikki the
springer spaniel, owned by Vice President of Operations
Jean Brown, who makes two cameo appearances.

Captaintreacherous Getting Ready
Racing manager Myron Bell reports that Dan Patch Award
winner Captaintreacherous will have a training mile Saturday
at the Meadowlands and an actual qualifier the following
week on May 16. He will have an unspecified number of
qualifiers afterward.
His first pari-mutuel race is scheduled to occur in the June
13 Meadowlands Maturity. Other races on his immediate
schedule include the Ben Franklin at Pocono and the return
visits to the Meadowlands for the W illiam Haughton and the
U.S. Pacing Championship.

MATTIE TERROR GIRL took similar coast to coast last
week and I don't see any apparent reason why she can't
do it again. At her best she's probably just better than
these UF DRAGON'S QUEEN hasn't been able to figure
out the top choice in her last pair but overall remains in
good form for Ford; a case can be made here for a share.
OUR ERLS DREAM N impressed in her Meadowlands
debut last out with a big closing kick; lures JC off of
MOMMA ROCK. HOT LIST closed in :26 flat two back and
then was in against FFA mare Jerseylicious last out; tough
to look past for top connections.
MACHAROUNDTHECLOCK has been a bit dull in her last
two but that winning try from three back here would give
her a chance. SHINE N SHIMMER has greatly outraced
her odds in her last two; should offer a big number once
again.

Race 8, B-2/B-1/A-2 Trot
DRIFT AW AY was used multiple times last out before he
steamrolled first over past a formidable foe on the lead and
was able to comfortably hold off all others. He catches a
slightly more difficult group overall here but I can't deny his
current form; Marcus should put him in play once again.
Speaking of sharp, HERE COMES NUMBERS would have
three wins in a row if not for breaking issues by the wire;
closed in :26 and change last out against weaker. The class
of REAL BABE speaks for itself and the pocket sitting foe
that caught her the last time she raced here is a good one;
speed guaranteed to be coming. HIGH BRIDGE almost beat
Maven in a qualifier a few weeks ago but has yet to shine
since and now comes off a sick scratch; Yannick even opts
now over to W HATA DONATO who raced well here over the
winter. W IND OF THE NORTH almost got to Modern Family
two back but that was over at Pocono; let's see what Simons
does here with the outside post.
Race 9, F&M C-1 Trot
SMOKE PAN MIRRORS shot right up the ladder in her last
few at Philly and those rivals she beat a couple back weren't
bad ones; this might be as sharp as she's ever been.
Callahan was listed here but we get Brett Miller instead who
has been driving well with some longshots; worth a swing at
a price. ARIA J seems the most steady of these and closed
last week from nowheresville to be 2nd for the second
consecutive week; should be close enough to strike from this
post. W OMAN OF TERROR has sparkled in her last two but
now she steps up and it's back to McCarthy. TOP BRAND
drops after a couple no shot trips against much better; the
likely favorite as CC's choice of a few. TWIN B ELITE is
another dropper but is compromised by the post;
LEAVEUMLADY just hasn't been that sharp lately for the
team of Burke and YG.
Race 10, C-1 Trot
BROADW AY ROCKS was loaded late last week in his first
start back since August and any repeat of that try would get
the job done in this spot. This one raced well against
generally better company over the past couple years and it's
his race to win or lose for trainer Coyne; Miller's likely pick.
HANDOVER BELLE wasn't bad last out from post 10 but I
still thought she should have been a bit better; chance to
show something from the move inside in third start back.
COE LEADER makes his second start following the layoff
and drops; the horse that won his last race is in the top
condition tonight. MARCH AW ARENESS steps up after
winning consecutive C-2's; can likely go at this level. ALL
ABOUT JUSTICE moves back up the ladder following a win
against lesser.
