Thursday, Nov. 10, 2011 Perretti Farms Begins Its Long Goodbye By Bill Finley HARRISBURG, Pa.–For nearly 25 years Perretti Farms has been a breeding and racing operation that represents excellence and has always operated at the very highest levels. Tomorrow in Harrisburg, the dismantling begins. For numerous reasons, including the shaky racing situation in New Jersey and the advancing age of 84-year-old owner Bill Perretti, the farm will begin the process of scaling way back as it sells off its mares during the mixed sale portion of the annual Harrisburg sale. It will be a sad day for Perretti, but, at the same time, the dispersal represents the type of opportunity buyers rarely encounter. Anthony (left) and Bill (right) Perretti are The catalogue includes 134 dispersing their mares Perretti broodmares, several of them among the very best in the sport. The list is topped by Hip 1290, Graceful Touch. She has produced Hambletonian winner Muscle Massive and Muscle Mass, a stakes winner of $229,000. She was last bred to Lucky Chucky. The dams of Lucky Chucky, Palone Ranger and Windsong Soprano are others that will no doubt attract buyers. “It is a unique opportunity because you have prime mares that normally wouldn’t be available in the marketplace,” said Anthony Perretti, the farm’s general manager. “With the possibility that there is slot money coming down the road in New Jersey, it’s a gamble, but it’s a really good gamble. If this would have happened when things were really rolling in 2006, 2007, these mares probably would have cost a lot more than they will today. W hen people see quality in any market, they are willing to pay. They are willing to pay for quality yearlings and they are willing to pay for quality broodmares. It’s only going to happen once; there’s just one shot at buying these mares. That’s not the case with buying yearlings.” In many ways, the mares have been the backbone of the Perretti operation “Because of dispersal and the opportunity, people can buy into bloodlines they haven’t been able to buy into in generations, maybe a lifetime,” Perretti said. “It’s once in a lifetime opportunity. There are people out there who feel they have to be here to look at these mares because once they are gone they are gone. Even the ones who will go at modest price levels, they need to look at these mares because they could produce W orld Champions, too. W e are so deep in generations that you never know where a world champion can come from. I have to attribute that to Bob Marks because he’s the one that started the farm and put these pedigrees in place.” In many cases, buyers will have to weigh the pros and cons of having New Jersey breds. Perretti hopes they will understand that the future in the Garden State could in fact be very good. “I believe New Jersey will turn around and I believe these horses in the mares’ bellies will be racing for slots money,” he said. “I believe that and I think Jeff Gural believes that. I think we are going to turn the corner. It’s just a matter of (continued, page 2) Chocolatier On The Move, Will Stand in Sweden. See page 4 HarnessRacingUpdate.com • 11/9/11 • PAGE 2 of 8 when.” The Perretti family has been attempting to sell off much of the property in Cream Ridge, New Jersey, but when they didn’t get the price they were looking for at a recent auction one large chunk of the farm was temporarily pulled from the market. The process of selling the farm continues, but Anthony Perretti said as long as it goes unsold the door remains open for Perretti Farms to get rolling again. “It was very disappointing that one of the three farms did not sell,” Perretti said. “It’s going to more difficult than we thought to sell the property. To rebuild is a question. If slots come to the Meadowlands, we would like to rebuild the farm. The stallions have not been sold. W e are not sure what state they are going to be in a this point. My father is still going to be buying colts and race horses to develop as stallions. It’s just going to be a different level of activity.” Ontario Puts Its Stamp On Harrisburg By Darin Zoccali HARRISBURG, PA--It had been widely speculated heading into Harrisburg that Ontario-sired horses were in high demand, and in a business where rumors are often best ignored, this is one rumor that has certainly proved legitimate. There has been plenty of good news of late for the Ontario program. First, Monkey On My Wheel (Mach Three) won a Breeders Crown race and then it was announced that Bettor's Delight will be moving to the province. Now, through the first three days of the Harrisburg sale, Ontario sired horses are up 27% compared to last year, when the average yearling price for an Ontario sired horse was $29,167. The average in 2011 is $37,030. The good news for Ontario was the highlight on what was otherwise a down day for the sale. The average on the day was $18,323, down 8.4 percent from last year's average of $20,014. Trainer and native Canadian Casie Coleman is not surprised by this sudden surge of interest in Ontario breds. "Ontario sires have been ridiculous," said Coleman. "I've been trying to buy a couple, but I haven't been able to buy one so far. I have been trying to buy a few actually, but I can't overpay like that." Coleman attributes the Ontario success to more than just the performances we have seen in 2011 on the racetrack. "We have a great sire stakes program and the nominating fees are extremely affordable, which makes the program even more appealing," Coleman said. "The program in Canada is awesome. In my feeling, we have weak broodmares, but they are selling for big dollars. I hope I can get one, I have a couple of homebreds, but I (continued, page 3) HarnessRacingUpdate.com • 11/9/11 • PAGE 3 of 8 haven't been able to buy one yet." Standardbred Horse Sales Company Vice President and General Manager Murray Brown is aware of the Ontario emergence as well. "They were fantastic," said Brown. " They have a great sire stakes program up there, and the sale has been loaded with Canadian buyers. I thought they would sell well, but, to a degree, the level of success surprised me. People came here looking for Ontario sired horses, they found them and they are willing to pay for them." Brown feels that this is something that can be a shot in the arm for harness racing as a whole. "This is great for racing," Brown added. "W ith Bettor's Delight moving to Ontario, knowing the quality animal he can produce, it's only going to help." The strength of the Ontario sired horses was on display in the sales third day as well. Hip no. 806, an Ontario filly by Kadabra, was the sales topper bringing $100,000. She was purchased by Fam Alber Horse Racing LLC and Adam Victor and Son stable. The trainer will be Noel Daley. Hip no. 576, a filly by Kadabra, had a purchase price of $92,000 for Richard "Nifty Norman. The third most expensive yearling of the day for $85,000 was another Ontario sired horse. That was hip no. 591, an Angus Hall colt who was purchased by David Menary, acting as agent. Menary also purchased hip no. 820, a Badlands Hanover colt for $82,000. A son of Majestic Son, hip no. 640 brought $70,000. In addition, hip no. 582 brought $65,000 from Jeff Gillis. In the end eight of the ten highest purchases of the day were Ontario sired yearlings. Though the numbers were down yesterday, positive news was not hard to find, with many horses bringing a purchase price which was more than expected. In addition, the average price for a yearling through the first three days of the sale is up about 3% from this point last year. Brown was very pleased with the third day of the sale. "Today was a terrific day, I thought," said Brown. "Anything worthwhile sold very well, in many cases, better on a relative basis than the yearlings that sold on Monday and Tuesday. W e sold a dozen horses, that in my opinion, wouldn't have brought half the purchase price if they had sold on Monday or Tuesday." Will The Cancelliere Brothers Be Back? Maybe...Sort Of By Bill Finley Brothers John and Tom Cancelliere, who rocked the Standardbred Horse Sales Company auction sale Monday with their record yearling purchases, are not coming back to Harrisburg, but their dollars might. The pair will soon be on their way to Chicago to watch their Breeders Crown winner Bettor Sweet (Bettor’s Delight) compete in the American Nationals at Balmoral, but they are contemplating buying some race horses in absentia on Saturday. “W e have a couple of things that we’ve looked at,” John Cancelliere said. “W e’re thinking about buying a few, but I wouldn’t bet on it. W e have a couple of guys out there and there are a couple that are later on in the sale that we may look at.” The presence of John and Tom Cancelliere, or at least their bank accounts, would be welcome news for the sellers and consignors of race horses. The pair has been very active at race horse sales in the past and bought Jugette winner Showerherthemoney (Cam’s Card Shark) last year for $700,000. Chocolatier To Sweden By Bill Finley Stallion Chocolatier has been sold to a Swedish consortium headed by Robert Lindstrom and will stand at stud in 2012 at Aleback Farm in Linkoping, Sweden, syndicate spokesman Geoff Stein has announced. “He’s had limited crops and he’s had some top horses,” Stein said. “Big Chocolate is one of the best 2-year olds around and he has had a lot of good fillies like Seducedbychocolate. It’s just become the type of situation where the marketplace has become so competitive it’s difficult to compete when you have small crops like he has had. He bred 72mares last year, and we had a good offer to sell him. He’s going to a wonderful place in Sweden. It is a good Chocolatier is headed opportunity for the horse and a to Sw eden good situation for the syndicate and the timing was right. He’s had the equivalent of one full crop and from that he’s had one of the best 2-year-olds and a number of top fillies. I think (continued on page 5) HarnessRacingUpdate.com • 11/9/11 • PAGE 5 of 8 he has really done OK.” Chocolatier has had 219 registered foals and to date they have earned $2,161,502. In his first year at stud, he bred 134 mares. That number fell to 72 in 2011. Badlands Nitro Returns to Winbak New York (press release from Winbak Farm of New York) John Celii and George Teague, Jr. announced today that they have agreed to return Badlands Nitro (3, 1:50.0f) to Joe and JoAnn Thomson's W inbak Farm of New York for the 2012 breeding season. Badlands Nitro has career earnings of $1,597,638. At two, he equaled the world record set by Artsplace of 1:51.1 on a 5/8 track. At three, he earned $1,408,734, including wins in the Hempt, the Art Rooney and the Battle of the Brandywine. He was second in the North America Cup final (to Somebeachsomewhere), the Cane Pace, the Little Brown Jug elimination and the Windy City Pace. Joe Thomson stated, "W e are excited about this opportunity. This agreement allows us to feature a W estern Hanover line stallion for our New York breeding facility. Having the opportunity to stand this W orld Champion is a great way to reinforce our New York Sire offerings. After we saw his limited first crop of yearlings, we knew we should return him to the breeding shed." "We evaluated several opportunities for Badlands Nitro. W e chose W inbak because of the excellent job they are doing standing Badlands Hanover. After a year in the pasture, his fertility has improved significantly, he is ready to go", stated John Celii, co-owner and managing partner. To date, Badlands Nitro yearlings had the second highest average for pacing stallions at the 2012 Morrisville NY yearling sale and Nitro's W iggle; the only yearling sold the first day at Harrisburg reached $100,000.00. Badlands Nitro’s 2012 stud fee is $5000.00 Sports Betting Approved in Jersey By Lucas Marquardt A New Jersey ballot question to allow sports betting at New Jersey racetracks and casinos passed by a nearly 2-1 margin Tuesday, the first step, its supporters, hope toward adding sports bets to the wagering menus at the Meadowlands and Freehold. Including New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, the Newark Star-Ledger and the racing and casino industries, the bill had widespread going in. According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, State Sen. Raymond Lesniak (D., Union), the legislature's main proponent of sports wagering, said he planned to introduce legislation Thursday that would authorize the New Jersey Casino Control Commission to begin the process for licensing sports betting at casinos and horse tracks in Mays Landing, Freehold, Monmouth, and the Meadowlands. However, federal law still stands in the way of legal sports betting in the state. A federal law enacted in 1992 ban sports betting in all but four states–Nevada, Delaware, Oregon and Montana. W hen the federal bill was enacted, states that wanted sports betting had 18 months to declare their intentions to go ahead and legalize the betting. New Jersey did not request sports betting at the time. But New Jersey standardbred breeder Mike Gulotta believes the state can and will have the federal rule overturned in court. “I have no doubt that this is going to happen,” he said. “There’s just too many people that want this to happen. Just look at the economic and financial landscape. Everyone knows that aid is down to municipalities and the state has fo find ways to increase revenue and this is one way to do it.” Saturday at Dover Downs Race 6. $129,050, Trot.
