Sunday, May 31, 2015 In The Arsenal Bests Entrymate in Art Rooney, Purrfect Bags Posts Upset In Lismore By Perry Lefko YONKERS, NY – In The Arsenal and Betting Exchange went postward as a coupled entry in the $300,000 Art Rooney Final for three-year-old colt pacers Saturday night at Yonkers Raceway, but what happened in the race will likely be remembered for how it ended. Bizarre. Strange. Odd. Perplexing. Any one of those would sum it up. In The Arsenal (Sears) - photo by Mike Lizzi Both had the lead at various points, and were actually in an interesting battle in the stretch. It looked as though In The Arsenal, driven by Brian Sears, would win easily, but he started to bear out and took some funny steps. But he was able to hold off Betting Exchange, driven by David Miller, to win by a head. Rock N’ Roll World placed third by a length. “With every experience, I look for this colt to get better and better,” said Sears. “He was a little green there at the wire, kind of made a little bit of a right hand turn. Fortunately no one was outside him. He’s done everything we've asked so far. There’s times in the miles with this colt that he latches on to you and wants to pace, and when they were pacing past the quarter I was thinking about trying to get Dave, but then they took a shot at me pretty good and I couldn’t open the hole. But I was able to make my move to the front. He felt good right through the turn, the only moment was right at the end where he kind of ran out and I really can’t explain it but he’s done some funny things in races before. Hopefully, with experience he’ll get better and more mature.” For In The Arsenal’s trainer Kelvin Harrison, it was a glorious win, albeit someone nervewracking. “I really can’t say what happened,” Harrison said. “Brian didn’t seem to be too concerned about it. I was worried (in the stretch drive), but Brian said the horse was well within himself. I was watching the race on the TV in the paddock and probably had the worst view. After the race, my horse (continued on next page) World Champ Warrawee Needy and 2-Year-Olds Bring Intrigue to Meadowlands Sale By Bill Finley What's the co-fastest pacer in the history of the sport worth? And can the concept of selling 2-year-olds ever catch on in harness racing? Those will be two of the many questions that will be answered today at the 2015 Spring Mixed Sale at the Meadowlands. Warrawee Needy is one of four horses in the history of the game to go in 1:46.4, the fastest race time ever. That, alone, makes him the biggest name in the sale. The problem is that his form has not been great lately. The now 6-year-old son of E Warrawee Needy is among the big names Dee's Cam is 4 for in today’s Meadowlands sale (Lisa photo) 14 this year with HarnessRacingUpdate.com • 5/31/15 PAGE 2 of 16 (In The Arsenal continued) cooled out good. He seemed very, very sharp after the race. “Obviously I’m very happy to win the race. I did expect to win the race, but when you win a race of that caliber it’s always a great thrill.” Howard Taylor owns 10 percent of In The Arsenal with breeder W hite Birch Farm, and 50 percent of Betting Exchange. The two entrymates went postward at 1-4 odds in the field of eight. In The Arsenal paid $2.50 and $2.10. There was no show wagering. The exacta paid $5.70. The trifecta $18. In The Arsenal, a son of American Ideal out of the On The Road Again mare Ladyotra, collected $150,000 to raise his lifetime bankroll to more than $580,000. In The Arsenal went into the race undefeated in two starts this season, including winning his elimination race for the final. He had post position two, which gave him an easier pathway to the front. Betting Exchange, starting from post five in the field of eight, had a more difficult task. Betting Exchange led by a nose after the opening quarter mile while parked, followed by Rock N’ Roll W orld, while In The Arsenal was a close third. Sears made his move and led through a half in 56 and three quarters in 1:24. He had a one-length lead at the top of the stretch. Harrison said he will skip the Somebeachsomewhere Stakes this Saturday at Mohawk Racetrack and go directly into the June 13 elimination races for the $1 million North America Cup on June 20. “I just want to give him the best chance we can give him,” Harrison said. “W ith the week off he’ll be even better. In a perfect world we’ll go right into the North America Cup, skip the Hempt and go right to the Meadowlands Pace.” Purffect Bags Is Perfect In Lismore Purrfect Bags made her season debut a winning one after three qualifiers to win the $117,724 Lismore Pace for three year-old fillies by two lengths. Driven by Victor Kirby, Purrfect Bags was fifth by 3½ lengths at the top of the stretch, but finished strongly on the outside with a final quarter in 27 2/5 to win in 1:52 3/5, beating 2-5 favorite Sassa Hanover. Purrfect Bags went postward at more than 11-1 odds. Bedroomconfessions, 15-1, finished third. Purrfect Bags is trained by Jim King and owned by his wife, Joann Looney-King, who also trained Tyra, winner of last year’s Lismore. “Last year I won as a trainer and this year as an owner,” she said. “W inning as an owner is much more profitable. I paid $2,000 for the filly (by Roddy’s Bags Again) and brought her home and my husband was less than thrilled, but she’s been a nice filly all along.” She’s now won more than $200,000. Purrfect Bags paid $24.60 and $5.90. There was no show wagering because of the entry of Strut My Stuff, who finished fourth, and Totally Rusty, who was fifth. Sassa Hanover paid $2.50 to place. The exacta paid $48.80. | share this story | (Warrawee Needy continued) earnings of $79,550 for trainer Mark Ford. He was fourth in a $25,000 overnight race last out at Yonkers. But what if a change of scenery to a new barn can turn his fortunes around? A lot of people will no doubt have that on their minds when he comes into the ring and someone might be willing to pay good money based on that gamble. "I think Warrawee Needy is a very interesting horse in this sale," sales manager Dave Reid said. "Obviously, he's a world champion and has quite a résumé. He'll be in demand." Looking for another horse to take a chance on? How about Hip 84, Thats My Opinion. The son of Somebeachsomewhere cost $350,000 at the 2012 Harrisburg sale but has never broken through on the racetrack and has broken stride on several occasions. That said, he does have a mark of 1:50.1, so there is some ability there. He also, no doubt, increased his value yesterday when finishing second behind Foiled Again in a Meadowlands qualifier. He paced in 1:51 and finished ahead of such notable horses as Bettor's Edge and McW icked. Buyers should also like Hip 41, My Hero Ron, who was fourth in a Pennsylvania Sire Stakes race last out and Hip 69, Caviart Shelly. She's a 4-year-old mare by Somebeachsomewhere who has won four in a row for trainer Ron Burke and was second in the W eiss Final at Pocono. As he often does at this time of the year, Burke appears to be making room in his massive stable for fresh (continued on next page) HarnessRacingUpdate.com • 5/31/15 PAGE 3 of 16 stock and 2-year-olds and has 14 horses in the catalogue. This is the second year that the sale has included 2-year-olds as Reid, as well as others, is trying to entice buyers and sellers to support the idea of selling juveniles. Two-year-old sales are a huge business in thoroughbred racing and many yearling buyers have made huge scores pinhooking horses. There doesn't seem to be any reason why the same concept wouldn't work in harness racing, but the industry as a whole hasn't exactly been receptive to the idea. "I'm definitely disappointed in the level of participation we've gotten for the 2 year olds," Reid said. "W e did a lot of advertising and a lot of networking for this. There still seems to be some psychological barrier standing in our way and we have to overcome that hurdle." There are 14 2-year-olds listed in the main catalogue and three more in the supplemental catalogue. W ith four of the 2 year olds, buyers should have a good read on them as that quartet qualified yesterday morning at the Meadowlands. Rocky Hanover finished second and Play Again was third in 1:58.4. "W hile I wish we had more 2-year-olds to sell, I definitely think we have a better overall group than last year," Reid said. "A bunch baby raced at the Meadowlands and there are a few others that should sell pretty well." W hen asked about the future of 2-year-old sales, Reid was noncommital. "I'll have a better idea 24 hours from now," he said. "I'm going to reserve judgment until I see how things go (today) and see what some of these horses sell for." Artspeak, Mission Brief Remain Undefeated In 2015, Canepa Hanover Looks Really Special By Perry Lefko EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ – Artspeak and Mission Brief, both champions last year, pulled off victories last night at the Meadowlands in $100,000 New Jersey Sire Stakes race, but what a contrast in the way they did it. Artspeak did it spectacularly easy with a breathtaking performance, making a brilliant move down the backstretch. Mission Brief struggled throughout even when leading and had to fight back after surrendering the top in the stretch drive but still managed to hold on. Artspeak, a son of W estern Ideal out of the Artsplace mare The Art Museum, started from the eight post in the (continued on next page) HarnessRacingUpdate.com • 5/31/15 PAGE 4 of 16 field of nine, and regular driver Scott Zeron showed patience at the start of the race to settle into fourth. Gokudo Hanover, driven by John Campell for trainer Douglas Hamilton, blasted to the front from the sixth hole through an opening quarter of 26 3/5 with a brief lead over Hurrikane Ali, the 8-5 second choice in the field driven by Yannick Gingras. At that point, Artspeak was fifth by eight lengths. Artspeak (Zeron) in 1:48.4 - photo by Mike Lizzi Hurrikane Ali made a move to overtake Gokudo Hanover, but Zeron had already pulled out and was making a sweeping move that had the colt second by three quarters of a length after a half in 54 3/5. And there was simply no stopping the 7-10 favorite, who reached the three-quarter mark comfortably in 1:21 3/5, leading by two lengths and three and a half lengths at the top of the stretch. Zeron had the horse all wrapped up at that point and coasted to a three-length win in 1:48 4/5. Gokudo Hanover, 8-1, finished second, followed by 13-1 longshot Revenge Shark and Hurrikane Ali. W ith his second consecutive win of the season and 10th in 12 lifetime starts, Artspeak collected $50,000 to raise his career bankroll to more than $800,000. He paid $3.40, $2.60 and $2.20. Gokudo Hanover paid $4.00 and $3.20. Revenge Shark paid $4.00. The exacta paid $13.80 and the trifecta $48.20. “It felt like I was way too far back,” Zeron said of the opening quarter mile. “It was in a bad spot, but they floated up up front and Artspeak just wanted to get there. That (move) was pretty vicious. He did that all on his own and stayed on the bit and from then on out it was pretty easy. W e were pretty wrapped up with the plugs in. He was very professional at two, but he’s just stronger, faster…I just love the horse.” Trainer Tony Alagna said after the race that he and the connections would talk about the horse’s next start, and while he suggested they will likely bypass next week’s Somebeachsomewhere Stakes at Mohawk and go right into the North America Cup eliminations on June 13. It’s similar to the route Alagna took with Captaintreacherous, who was owned by almost the same partners that own Artspeak. Alagna marveled at the colt’s speed. “He’s more like a sportscar,” Alagna said. “I always tell people it’s like stepping on a gas pedal of a sports car. (continued on next page) HarnessRacingUpdate.com • 5/31/15 PAGE 5 of 16 When you ask him, he’s gone. Captain could get into gear, and he’d stay in gear forever. He’s not been tested yet, but he will be.” Marvin Katz, one of the owners of the colt with Brittany Farms, Joe Sbrocco and The Gym Partners, was absolutely taken aback by the colt’s latest win. “He made that eight or 10 lengths up just in a heartbeat,” Katz said. “It was a spectacular move down the backside, of course, against good horses. That’s serious speed. This horse has incredibly high speed. It’s very, very rare. W as it the best race? I still have to go with the Metro and the Governor’s Cup. Those are big, important victories. I’m still going with those, but in terms of impressing me? He’s impressed me many times. He’s clearly identified himself as a horse that’s come back and is one of the main players, for sure.” Katz pointed out that Zeron was using a slightly different bike than the one he normally uses because of the colt’s powerful stride. “His gait is so big and he drives off the back so hard that he was hitting the bike (in his season-opening start),” Katz said. “Tony got a longer bike for him because his gait is just so big. He’s just covering so much ground with each stride, Tony got the same type of bike Scotty uses but a bigger one.” Katz said the reason why Artspeak may skip the Somebeachsomewhere is because of the intense schedule that the colt will likely have this year after a patiently-managed two-year-old campaign, almost similar to Captaintreacherous. “It’s a really intense schedule leading up to the Meadowlands Pace. They could literally go every week for almost two months straight,” he said. “You can’t do that, so you have to try to get some breaks in when you can. The partnership will discuss (the horse’s next start) and make a decision, but I would think Tony is leaning to staying home. It’s important to do what’s in the best interest of the horse. Giving him some breaks in the early part of the year will hopefully pay some dividends as the year goes along. Plus, he raced last year in the Metro, so he’s familiar with the track. He’s been over the surface. Scott knows the surface. Tony knows the track. W e wouldn’t need that start, whereas in some instances when a horse hasn’t been over the track you have to try to get him over there once before that.” Mission Brief, last year’s champion two-year-old filly trotter, started furthest out in the field of 10 and Gingras let her find her stride while crossing over to the middle. Marion Millionair, an 18-1 long shot who had the rail, set the early pace with an opening quarter mile of 28 4/5. Gingras, who had his horse second by 1¼ lengths, grabbed the lead and had a two-length advantage after a half in 58 2/5. But Model Behavior, a 28-1 outsider driven by Tim Tetrick, was making a serious move at the 1-5 favorite and led by a nose after three quarters of a length in 1:27 1/5. Model Behavior increased the lead to a head in the stretch, but Mission Brief stayed strong and flat and passed her (continued on next page) HarnessRacingUpdate.com • 5/31/15 PAGE 6 of 16 challenger on the inside to win by a half length. Mission Brief, trained by Ron Burke, who owns the fabulous filly with Our Horse Cents Stable, Jerry and Theresa Silva and W eaver Bruscemi, won in a time of 1:54 3/5, finishing the final quarter of a mile in 28 4/5. Model Behavior placed second, followed by Riley’s Dream. Mission Brief, with her second consecutive win of the season and 11th in 15 lifetime starts, collected $50,000 to raise her bankroll to more than $653,000. She paid $2.40, $2.10 and $2.10. Model Behavior paid $10.80 and $4.40. Riley’s Dream paid $2.40. The exacta paid $22.60 and the trifecta $67.40. “W arming up she actually felt pretty good,” Gingras said. “In the race, you know she’s not 100 percent. Now we’ve got a month and Ronnie can try a few things with her and see what’s going to work. Honestly, that’s as fast as I could go. She didn’t feel like she was liking it too much. Timmy got a head in front of me, but I knew if she’s still trotting in the stretch she’s going to win the race. I was patient with her, let her settle. She’s so much more mature. I can race her any which way I want to right now. I can race her out of a hole, out of cover, but the way it’s been going right now. It’s a lot better to let her relax and get her gait straight. That’s the biggest problem.” The filly is not scheduled to race for a month. The big question is whether she will be entered against the boys later in 10 weeks time for the Hambletonian. Canepa Hanover Sizzles Canepa Hanover, a half-brother to 2006 Horse of the Year Glidemaster, raced a monster mile in a $100,000 NJSS race for three-year-old male trotters, stopping the teletimer in a swift 1:51 1/5, stamping himself as a serious contender for the Hambletonian. Driven by Gingras for trainer Jimmy Takter, who is in Sweden for Maven’s race in the Ellitloppet, Canepa Hanover made an early move for the lead from the four hole and was never headed, setting fractions of 28 for the opening quarter mile, 56 2/5 for the half and 1:24 through three quarters. W ith every step he took, Canepa Hanover simply drew away from the field, finishing the race 3½ lengths to the good. French Laundry, also trained by Takter, finished strongly for second, while Aldebaran Eagle finished third. Canepa Hanover, third choice in the field at just over 5-2, paid $7.40, $3.40 and $2.40. French Laundry paid $3.20 and $2.20, and Aldebaran Hanover paid $3.60. The exacta paid $22.40 and the trifecta $71.40. The win was only the second in 10 lifetime starts for Canepa Hanover, who has banked less than $100,000. He was purchased as a yearling for $300,000 and is owned by Katz, Brittany Farms, Al Libfeld, Sam Goldband, Brixton Medical Inc. and Christina Takter. Canepa Hanover raced only six times last year, winning once and finishing second in another. Takter practiced patience with the colt, and had the owners’ full backing. “Before Jimmy left for Sweden, he told me he had this horse as good as he could be,” Gingras said. “He got a little playful in the stretch, so I popped the plugs just to give him a reminder and he found another gear…This horse is ready to rock right now. It’s just a matter of getting him a little bit better and having him ready in 10 weeks.” Katz, still in awe of Artspeak’s race earlier in the card, was equally impressed with Canepa Hanover. “Jimmy liked him a great deal training down as a two-year-old,” Katz said. “He was very high on him. He won early as a two-year-old and showed devastating ability. He just wasn’t mature enough. He’s a big colt. To Jimmy’s credit, he stopped early with him without beating him up. He kept him on his farm and started back with him and has always felt this horse has a ton of ability. He was very high on him, and by mid-winter he spoke glowingly of him. He qualified him in 1:52 2/5. You don’t qualify trotters in that time unless they are exceptional. It’s a tribute to Jimmy’s talent and experience and skill as a trainer. The plan was for Jimmy to drive him all along like he did with Trixton (last year’s upset winner in the Hambo). Jimmy called it the Trixton program. He’s been on a very similar program. The fact Jimmy was driving him was just to make sure he knew what he was doing on the racetrack and could be protected when necessary. He clearly came to race tonight. Obviously.” Takter also trains last year’s champion two-year-old colt trotter Pinkman, whom Gingras drives. “It’ll all take care of itself,” Katz said. Katz was also proud of the effort of French Laundry, whom he and Libfeld bred and own with Christina Takter and Jim and John Fielding. French Laundry won seven of 12 races last year and more than $300,000 and was victorious in his season opener. “He finished second in 1:51 4/5 and closed fastest of all and raced super as well,” Katz said. “W e’re very proud of him.” | share this story | HarnessRacingUpdate.com • 5/31/15 PAGE 7 of 16 Golden Receiver Back on Track at Vernon by James Witherite, Vernon Downs racing media Vernon, NY - After having enough of retirement through just four months, double millionaire Golden Receiver makes his return to the races in Sunday (May 31) afternoon's featured $10,000 Open Pace at Vernon Downs. The 63-time winner, now in the care of trainer Allie Berube for the Our Horse Cents Stables and Golden Receiver, LLC, was assigned post 4 in the 5-horse event, carded as Sunday's Golden Receiver makes his comeback second race. The today at Vernon Downs 10-year-old Village Jove gelding won 63 of his 172 starts, while finishing in the money on 115 occasions. He's primarily done battle in the top pacing ranks through the Mid-Atlantic, taking his lifetime mark in January of 2012 with a 1:48 victory in a Presidential preliminary at the Meadowlands. Golden Receiver mounts his comeback off a lone qualifier, sprinting clear and maintaining separation through a 1:53.3 mile at Vernon on May 22, finishing 15-3/4 lengths clear of Party With Artie. Fern Paquet, Jr. drove in the qualifier, and will do the same in Sunday's Open. His four rivals are A Fool For Mark (Dustin Ingraham), UF Bettors Hanover (Justin Huckabone), Damon Blue Chip (John MacDonald), and defending Open winner JK Panache (Chris Lems). Post time for the 11-race card at Vernon Downs is 1:15 p.m. Eastern time. With Maven, Et. Al., Heavy U.S. Influence In Elitlopp By Joakim Lindqvist SOLVALLA, Sweden - The big moment is here as 16 of the best trotters in the world will vie for superiority in The Elitlopp 2015 at Solvalla racetrack in Sweden this afternoon. And two Americans, Maven and W ind of the North, racing in one elimination respectively, are the only two contenders out of 16, with a world record. And then there's Nuncio as well, who is now trained in Sweden after a stellar campaign last year in the U.S. under the care of Jimmy Takter. He is now trained by Stefan Melander. There will be two eliminations and then the final, all three over the mile. Jimmy Takter tried Maven in an light work this Thursday. "She was smooth and eager and has taken the last races fantastically," he said. "She's got the right Maven seeks Elitlopp glory for Takter form." boys, trainer Jimmy and driver Johnny Jimmy Takter won The Elitlopp with Moni Maker in 1998. "But she was a big favourite and expected to win," Takter said. "This year's Elitloppet is an open one. The most important thing, is, of course, to reach the final, but at the same time Maven must get the best result in the elimination, for a good post in the final. "You know, it will be tight and she must be lucky. There are three turns. If she goes on the outside, every turn is two lengths longer, that's six lengths over the mile". Maven finished sixth in the final of The Elitlopp last year, then for trainer Jonas Czernyson. And then, she raced with shoes on all four. Lately Maven has raced with shoes only on her back feet and twice this winter in Paris she was shoeless on all four. W ill that be the case on Sunday? "No, if she races shoeless back, she becomes too quick, with a bad timing," Takter said. The elimination for Maven (4) is a tough one. She faces the favourite, Norwegian B.B.S.Sugarlight (1) who is expected to lead all the way. B.B.S.Sugarlight is the early morning pick in 11 out of 15 newspapers, Maven the pick in two of them. There's also French star Timoko (7), last year's winner of The Elitlopp. And Maven was also defeated by him in several races in France this winter. "Racing in France was a premature shot, with longer distances, she's at her best over the mile. She's bred to be (continued on next page) HarnessRacingUpdate.com • 5/31/15 PAGE 8 of 16 a miler," said Jimmy Takter. Maven also faces Nahar (2) who won The Elitlopp in 2013. Nahar is 10 years old now, and if he does it, he'll be the oldest ever to win this race. W ind of the North (8) has a difficult post in his elimination. Experts doesn't give him a good chance, but the last five years, 9 finalists out of 40, came from posts 7 and 8 in the eliminations. Arriving in Sweden, W ind of the North is staying at Swedish trainer Stig H Johansson's farm, just outside of Stockholm. His trip to Sweden was a tough one, it took him four days to get here, and he was dried out and thin on the arrival. Now he's recovered and was alert and joyful in the spelling paddock on Tuesday. In Sweden we know of his explosive ability behind the gate, and it will be a thrill to see the tactics of the winningest driver in the world, Dave Palone. Behind the gate, W ind of the North has Nuncio (7) on the inside. Trainer and owner Stefan Melander took Nuncio to Sweden this winter. He has performed with two wins in April and May at Solvalla racetrack. The 4-year old Nuncio is the youngest in this year's Elitloppet. Through the history, since 1952, only one of that age, has won The Elitlopp. That was the phenomenon Mack Lobell in 1988. Melander finds it a myth that The Elitlopp is no good for 4-year-olds, and states that American ones are better prepared for this. In this elimination we see the favourite Mosaique Face (4) who was back in the headlines last week, winning on 1.51.0. He's the early morning pick in 7 out of 15 newspapers, and expected to make a try for the early lead. Here, there's also high interest in French Univers de Pan (1), who, in The Finlandia Ajo in Helsinki May 17, finished third, was locked in the pocket and gave a fantastic impression. There's also Vincennes (3) who finished second in the same race. And the other Norwegian contender, Support Justice (2), is highly respected as well. Media has also circulated Royal Fighter (6), who will be driven by Jennifer Tillman, the third female driver in the history of The Elitlopp. It would be a surprise if he wins, but this weekend at Solvalla last year, he won a race, defeating B.S.S.Sugarlight. The sum of $350,000 awaits the winner of The Elitlopp 2015. Wiggle It Jiggleit Takes Center Stage on Indiana Sires Stakes Finals Night By Emily Gaskin ANDERSON, IN (May 30) - On a night where Indiana’s brightest harness racing stars were out in full force, W iggle It Jiggleit was the brightest of them all as he paced to a 1:49.3 victory in the $75,000 Indiana Sires Stakes Final for three-year-old pacing colts on Saturday, May 30 at Hoosier Park Racing & Casino over a sloppy rated track. Mother Nature was uncooperative as Hoosier Park played host to the first round of $75,000 Indiana Sires Stakes final for the three-year-old competitors on Saturday’s 14-race card. The rain didn’t seem to inconvenience W iggle It Jiggleit as he posted his tenth consecutive win and second consecutive Hoosier Park victory to remain undefeated in ten career starts. Wiggle It Jiggleit scores his 10th consecutive victory in Indiana Sires Stakes action Leaving from post seven in a talented group of ten, W iggle It Jiggleit was sent away from the gate firing by driver Montrell Teague to grab the lead through the opening panel in :26. As heavy rain continued to fall, the rest of the field sorted out early position with Rockin Ron and Rick Plano grabbing a pocket seat behind the overwhelming favorite. W iggle It Jiggleit continued to dictate fractions of :54.2 and 1:21.1 before ever feeling a threat from the rest of the field. Freaky Feet Pete and Trace Tetrick were the first to pose a threat as they were unable to find a spot along the rail and pressed on to the front after being parked for the much of the mile. Freaky Feet Pete would finally find the rail as he was able to tuck in behind the leader rounding the final turn but would have his work cut out for him with W iggle It Jiggleit inching away with every stride. W ith Freaky Feet Pete now on his back, Teague asked W iggle It Jiggleit for more and the colt responded with a :28 final quarter to coast home a winner by a length. Freaky Feet Pete turned in his own impressive performance to grind out a second place finish after a very taxing mile. Harfo Hanover and Tony Hall rounded out the trifecta. "The weather didn’t bother me; you’ve got to race in all kinds of weather,” owner George Teague Jr. noted in the winner’s circle. “Good horses you don’t have to make excuses for and we didn’t have to for him tonight, he was able to overcome it.” “He’s had two great races now and did everything we wanted him to,” he continued. “Now, he can go on to those other races and hopefully earn some respect against the other horses. He seems to travel well and be easy on himself so we’ll head to the North America Cup and see how it goes up there." Trained by Clyde Francis, W iggle It Jiggleit pushed his career earnings to $142, 242 with the victory. W iggle It Jiggleit is a gelded son of Mr. W iggles-Mozzi Hanover. The action-paced night opened with the first $75,000 final for three-year-old trotting fillies and Churita looked every bit (continued on next page) HarnessRacingUpdate.com • 5/31/15 PAGE 9 of 16 the part of a 1-2 favorite as she overcame the outside post nine to score in 1:55. Driven by regular pilot Trace Tetrick, Churita dictated fractions of :28.1, :57.3, and 1:26 before cruising to a five length victory. The 1:55 victory was a new lifetime mark for the daughter of Airzoom Lindy-Stonebridge Volare and her second consecutive victory in 2015. Trained by Matt Rheinheimer, Churita has now won 10 of 12 lifetime outings. Owned by Jackie Porter, Churita has amassed $310,725 lifetime. Fresh of a decisive win in the Indiana Sires Stakes elimination last week, Nora Rockwell and Jason Dillander turned in a gate-to-wire performance to take home top honors in the $75,000 Indiana Sires Stakes Final for three-year-old pacing fillies. Scoring in a lifetime best of 1:52.2, Nora Rockwell outlasted all challenges from the rest of the field to score her third victory of the season. “She has matured quite a bit from last year and tonight she was all business,” owner, trainer Marlin Fry noted after the win. “She is doing now what I thought she might always be capable of. Jason (Dillander) has done a great job with her.” Nora Rockwell is a homebred daughter of Palone Ranger-Norma Rockwell. She has now won seven of 22 lifetime outings while earning $81,072. W hile the stakes action switched gears, the weather did not. Rain continued to fall on the Hoosier Park surface but Homicide Hunter and John Delong seemed unbothered as they scored a decisive victory in the $75,000 Indiana Sires Stakes Final for three-year-old trotting colts. The 1:55.1 was a lifetime best performance and the second consecutive win from two seasonal outings for the Curt Grummel trainee. Uninvolved in the early stages of the race, Homicide Hunter was able to avoid traffic trouble and early breakers to put away all challengers in the final eighth of the mile. Using a :27 final quarter, Homicide Hunter held off the heavily favored, Bluebird Reverend and Rick Farrington, late in the lane to win by four lengths. “It wasn’t exactly how I thought the race would play out but the trip worked out for us,” Delong noted after the race. “W e made a couple of adjustments after last week and tonight he was awesome. He’s a perfect gentleman to drive and he does everything you ask of him. He really raced great tonight.” Homicide Hunter sent his career earnings over the $100,000 mark with the victory. Owned by Dr. Patrick Graham, the son of Mr. Cantab-Evening Prayer has now won five of 12 lifetime starts. Each of the four stakes winners from tonight’s program have now earned points for the $200,000 Indiana Sires Stakes Super Finals. The 2015 Indiana Sires Stakes season will culminate with the top ten horses from each of the previous $75,000 finals returning to compete in a $200,000 Super Final on October 10 at Hoosier Park. Live racing will continue at Hoosier Park Racing & Casino on Tuesday, June 2 with a 14-race card. Stubborn Belle, Solar Sister Share Stakes Spotlight Courtesy of Woodbine Entertainment Ontario-sired sophomore fillies were in the spotlight Saturday night at Mohawk Racetrack for the finals of the W EG-SBOA Stakes. A group of 10 fillies lined up on both the trot and the pace to contest the rich finals. The three-year-old filly trot final carried a purse of $179,661, while the pacing fillies battled for a purse of $177,661. The sophomore trotting fillies squared off in the first final of the night and O’Brien Award winner Stubborn Belle added to her trophy collection with a 1:55 victory. Driven by Paul MacDonell, Stubborn Belle, the 4-5 favourite, showed early speed to win the battle to the front ahead of a trio of fillies and posted an opening quarter of :27.1. Battle Mage, who was parked around the first turn, was able to clear to the front as they began the journey down the backstretch, but MacDonell wasted no time circling back around to put Stubborn Belle once again on the lead at the half in :56.2. Stubborn Belle was then able to turn aside the challenge of Meadow Seelster past three-quarters in 1:25.3 around the final turn and opened up several lengths on the field. The public’s choice trotted home in :29.2 to score a three-length victory. Meadow Seelster finished second, while Tymal Illbethere got up for third. Following the race, MacDonell said his filly showed improvements from her elimination victory a week prior. “She just seems to be getting better every week as we go,” said MacDonell. “She’s actually come a long way. She had a little incident early in the year [and] got behind a bit, but anyways she’s back on schedule now.” A daughter of Taurus Dream, Stubborn Belle is trained by John Bax and owned by Bax’s Parkhill Stud Farm and Al Libfeld. She is now two-for-two to start the season and has visited the winner’s circle seven times in her career. Stubborn Belle is staked to several of the major Grand Circuit events this season and MacDonell thinks her conditioning will improve as the season progresses to allow her to battle with the best fillies in the sport. “She’s got the power and strength, it’s just a matter of her conditioning kicking in and mid-season John’s [Bax] horses usually get better and better, so I can see her doing that.” The W EG-SBOA victory pushes Stubborn Belle’s career earnings over $614,000. A $2 win ticket on the Bax trainee returned $3.70. Following the filly trot final, the sky opened up and downpour of rain soaked the Campbellville, Ont oval. After a brief delay due to a power outage a few races later on the card, the final for three-year-old pacing fillies was contested and Solar Sister prevailed in a stretch duel over Ms Mac N Cheese. Driven by Doug McNair, Solar Sister, who won her elimination last week, was able to get away in fourth, while Code One Hanover grabbed the early lead into a :26.1 opening panel. (continued on next page) HarnessRacingUpdate.com • 5/31/15 PAGE 10 of 16 In the second quarter, Ms Mac N Cheese, the other elimination winner, moved from third to first and took the field by the half in :54.2. Solar Sister had to come first up around the final turn and engaged in a battle with the leader by the three-quarter pole in 1:23.1. In the stretch, the two elimination winners went toe-to-toe with Solar Sister edging ahead part way down the lane, but Ms Mac N Cheese battled back on the inside. The fillies slugged it out right to the wire and it was Solar Sister prevailing by a neck in 1:51.2. “I thought I had her [Ms Mac N Cheese] put away half way down the lane and she still came back right down to the wire, so it was a good race,” said McNair post-race. “My filly raced tough first over. To win on a night like this, she raced good.” W rangler Magic finished third and Delightful Hill finished fourth to round out the Superfecta. A daughter of Mach Three, Solar Sister is trained by Gregg McNair for owners David W illmot and Clay Horner. Saturday’s victory improves Solar Sister’s record to three-for-three this season and now gives her five career victories. Last season, Solar Sister banked over $214,000 and wrapped up her season with a second-place finish in the Three Diamonds Stakes. “She got good at the end of last year and she’s got good pedigree on her,” said McNair. “She seems obviously a hundred percent, she’s three-for-three, and hopefully she keeps getting stronger.” Solar Sister now has career earnings of over $326,000 and established a new career-best with her 1:51.2 score. A $2 win ticket on the McNair trainee returned $4.20 to win. This week's $34,000 Preferred Pace was won by 14-1 upsetter Ultimate Beachboy in wire-to-wire fashion for trainer David Menary. Driver Jody Jamieson sent the five-year-old Somebeachsomewhere gelding to the first quarter in :26.1 while forcing the leaving outsider, Nickle Bag, to take back and find a spot along the pylons in third-place behind last week's Preferred upset winner Spinfiniti. Ultimate Beachboy continued to lead past the half in :55.1 and three-quarters in 1:23.3 while Nickle Bag was flushed out off the pylons by the developing outer flow, but was unable to improve his position in the final quarter sprint. Ultimate Beachboy opened up two lengths off the turn and prevailed in 1:50.2. Spinfiniti held on for second-place one and half lengths behind the winner as 7-5 favourite Vegas Vacation and Shamballa closed late on the outside and Thinking Out Loud followed in fifth. Ultimate Beachboy is a four-time Preferred winner this year on W EG circuit in eight starts for owners Burke Racing Stable, W eaver Bruscemi, M1 Stable and Jack B. Piatt III. Saturday's win was his 17th in 57 races lifetime and lifted his bankroll over $370,000. Ultimate Beachboy returned $31.80 to his backers for a $2 investment. The win was the fourth of the night for Jamieson and second teaming up with Menary. P.O. Box 2200 • Briarcliff Manor, NY 10510 • www.preferredequine.com Dan Wilson’s Latest Missive on The Meadows Judges A few weeks ago Scott Egger was transferred to Harrah’s Chester. Doug Thomas was offered the Presiding Judge position and is a very good, strict judge from Ohio that would not have put up with the nonsense that now goes on at the Meadows. Things would have changed. For whatever reason, that did not happen. Since that time, the Pennsylvania Commission has been taking applications to fill that position and that process could be complete in a few weeks. Calls to Mr. Crawford from me have not been taken. Once again, Mr. Crawford was in a meeting, on a conference call or just stepped out for lunch. It should be noted that Mr. Egger is still being shown as the Presiding Judge in the official Meadows program as of May 29th. On Friday night 5/29, another one of those pylon violations happened. Only this time it involved Rich Gillock’s (Pres. of the MSOA) horse Cue Hall. Tony Hall HarnessRacingUpdate.com • 5/31/15 PAGE 11 of 16 was clearly off the track in the lightning lane by his own doing, but was left up for 3rd. It was a three way photo for 3rd, with each horse finishing 4 1/2 lengths back. Race 8 can be viewed at www.themsoa.com if you would like to review the replay. So maybe its just not Mr, Egger. Could it be the total ineptness of the judges at the Meadows. Those being Randy Blackhurst and Gary Reese, with the acting Presiding Judge unknown at this time. It should be noted that Mr. Blackhurst is extremely horsemen friendly and probably would have not worked well with Mr. Thomas. I hope to have a follow up next week. Dan W ilson Towers on Burke: This Guy’s Not Buying It I appreciate Dean's perspective, however his amazement with Ron Burke's success has raised my interest. Being a professional engineer I tend to see the world analytically. Ron Burke's success is clearly outside of traditional, accepted performance criteria. Compared to his peers, he exceeds the limits to the point of ridiculousness. Just because he has till now been able to operate with impunity does not mean everything is on the up and up. It only suggests that those charged with oversight are using inferior detecting methodology and says more about their inability to find issues than Mr. Burke's performance competence. The reality is that you cannot catch issues that are "Outside of the Box" with traditional techniques. I believe Mr. Burke is ahead of the curve and will stay that way till smarter, more experienced out-of-the box thinkers are put into place. If you've ever watched CSI (while entertainment) dealing with brilliant offenders or seen an NBA or NFL team make halftime strategy adjustments, you get the idea.. We simply need smarter, flexible officials. W hat we have is an exponentially smarter version of Lou Pena and he will continue to operate this way until he is no longer, legally able. The ball is in the court of those charged with oversight and so far they have been proven incapable. My last statement is that when you put people, opportunity and money together along with somewhat out of the norm performance, if it quacks like a duck.... --David Perry When Zero Doesn’t Equal Zero Is it planned or does it just happen? Saturday night, the races at Meadowlands and Pocono seem to go off at almost the same time. This seems to me to be very poorly planned and very inconvenient to fans. W hy is it necessary to parade the horses around for several minutes after the post time clock shows 0 minutes to post? --Edward Richardson Want to Subscribe for FREE?
