WEST CENTRAL BEHAVIORAL HEALTH
AFFILIATE OF THE DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHIATRY, DARTMOUTH MEDICAL SCHOOL
PADDLEPOWER 2010 marked the 8th year
that West Central Behavioral Health has hosted a
legion of paddlers, volunteers and crew on a 2day journey down the Connecticut River. More
than 150 paddlers and 80 volunteers joined us
on Saturday morning at the Orford Boat Launch
to begin our journey. Together we raised funds
and awareness for suicide prevention and to
support WCBH’s Emergency Services program.
Dean & Shelli Vanier are no strangers to the blisters,
sunburn, soggy clothes and head winds that paddlers
often endure. Yet for this couple, any discomfort
pales by comparison to the great adventure that is
PADDLEPOWER; it’s a summer tradition they just
won’t miss! Dean & Shelli have raised money and
awareness for suicide prevention since the very first
PADDLEPOWER in 2003 and this year
they served as honorary co-chairmen
of our event. We are so grateful for
their loyalty and generous support.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

Saturday Night’s All Right
Twinkling lights and candles set the mood for Saturday night’s
traditional dinner at Storrs Pond, where we feasted on Dick and
Gloria Ballantine’s famous barbecued chicken, and Everything
But Anchovies served lasagna and yummy salads. After the raffle
we danced the night away to rock & roll by Company Picnic.
Everyone had a great time!
Closing Ceremony Awaits Us
at Kilowatt Park
On Sunday morning, fog and drizzle accompanied breakfast and
driving rain followed us to the launch site on the Connecticut River,
but we were not deterred! Ninety-eight hardy souls ventured into
the water to paddle the last few miles, which symbolized their resolve to raise money and awareness for suicide prevention. Volunteers toiled in the rain to prepare a hot meal provided by Stinson’s
Village Market for paddlers and support teams who were about to
arrive hungry, cold and wet. After lunch, the closing ceremony began with a moving melody on the bagpipes played by James Patterson, and concluded with messages of hope from WCBH board member Nancy Reardon, CEO Suellen Griffin, Steering Committee Chairman Cynthia Twombly and this year’s PADDLEPOWER Honorary CoChairmen, Dean and Shelli Vanier.
