weeks. The lung was slow to recover and she lost 30 to 40
pounds.
Some days she drives.
It?s her call.
But every day, every single day, whether it?s bathing or
showering, or changing for bed, there is part of her life where
there are no choices. Whenever she peers into a mirror and
looks over her shoulder, there are reminders of the darkest
day of her life.
Nadine Habke, 38, is an outrider at Northfield Park, a driver
on the CKG Billings Championship circuit and, more
importantly, a survivor.
This summer (June 22) will mark 12 years since Habke, near
the end of a crumbling marriage, was chased down by her
husband outside their apartment in suburban Cleveland and
repeatedly stabbed in the back with a steak knife.
The husband, now her former husband, was Walter Case Jr.,
one of the most successful drivers in harness racing history.
?Had he twisted the knife just a half-inch, I?d be paralyzed,?
said Habke.
Case was found guilty of felonious assault and was
sentenced to five years in prison. He served four-and-a-half
years at the Belmont Correctional Institution in southeastern
Ohio, resumed his sulky career briefly, but has been
unlicensed the last 10 years.
?I still can?t fathom I did what I did. I feel terrible for what
happened to (Nadine),?Case told the Cleveland Plain Dealer
in 2006 from prison. ?I?m mad at myself for being that weak.?
?It was very scary,?she said. ?I even had a policeman on my
door for several days.?
But she eventually recovered and today is perhaps the
most passionate outrider in pari-mutuel history. Being a
lifeguard on horseback means everything to her. So much so
that Habke is becoming a regular on the Billings circuit.
?As a driver, I like the shoe being on the other foot because
I want to know what a professional driver experiences. I need
to know where they are coming from. My No. 1 priority is
being an outrider, but this (the Billings) is a change of pace I
needed. Plus, I always wanted to be a jockey, but I?m too tall.?
She?s 6?1?.
Born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta. Habke fell in love
with horses at an early age (a neighbor farmer had stock),
and took riding lessons at age 11. Her parents bought her a
horse for her 14th birthday.
Soon after graduating from high school, Nadine moved to
California. Her love for horses landed her on the backstretch
at Del Mar where she became a groom and a hot walker.
From the San Diego track, she headed for Santa Anita
where he eventually met David Stratton, who just happened
to be an Ohio harness horseman. Habke accepted a job with
Stratton and went to work at Northfield Park in 1998. She
eventually took a position with Ohio kingpin owner/trainer
Virgil Morgan who sent her to the New Jersey to work with
For the most part, Habke has shooed away her demons, but
those reminders in the mirror ? three healed-over puncture
wounds and the remnants of the 25 stitches needed to close
the cuts ? are regretful souvenirs from a marriage that went
bad in a hurry.
Despite the fact that she could have been killed or
confined to a wheelchair for life, Habke doesn?t speak ill of
Case, whom she says she hasn?t spoken to since the incident.
?He had all the talent in the world, but couldn?t handle life
off the track, ?she said. ?Walter would have been fine if he
could have driven horses 24 hours a day, seven days a week.?
Married in Las Vegas, in 2003, the union lasted a little more
than a year before unraveling.
?When it started to go down, when the drugs and alcohol
took over, I knew I had to save myself,?said Habke.
She missed her opportunity by at least a day. Estranged
from her husband, Habke returned to their apartment to
bring Case a check for horses and a saddle but before long,
all hell broke loose.
?He just lost it and began hitting me. I ran outside and he
chased after and tripped me. I didn?t know I was stabbed. It
felt like somebody punching me with brass knuckles.?
Habke ended up in Robinson Memorial Hospital in nearby
Ravenna in critical condition. In addition to the stab wounds,
she suffered a collapsed lung. She was on morphine for three

his Meadowlands string.
It was at the Big M where Habke met Case Jr.
?Walter got me my first job,?she said, referring to her
outriding duties at Pocono Downs, which lasted just one
season. Her stay was shortened when she learned that
Northfield Park, due to an Ohio State Racing Commission
rule that mandated all four state harness tracks employ an
outrider, was in need of her services.
She started at Northfield in 2001 and has spent the better
part of her career impressing horsemen with her outrider
prowess.
?She is completely awesome. I cannot say enough good
things about her,?said Aaron Merriman, North America?s
champion dash rider and a regular at Northfield.
Habke is a self-taught outrider. ?I never really had someone
teach me the job.a I think I have developed and earned the
trust of the horsemen. I love the work. It?s my life.?
Northfield races year-round and Habke is often tested in
northeast Ohio?s harsh winters that usually include several
blasts of lake effect snow.
?There have been nights when I haven?t been able to feel
my toes until two hours afterwards,?she said. ?I have winter
clothing, but you can only protect yourself so much. I have to
be able to maneuver. It?s like the mail, I?m out there come
rain, sleet or snow.?
As for her driving career, Habke acquired her ?P?
(provisional) license last year and had a handful of drives as
a warm-up for this season?s C.K.G. Billings Series.
?I drove in my first Billings race at Miami Valley (Apr. 24)
and finished third,?said Habke. ?I was happy with my
performance and I?m thankful that (trainer) Frank Harris is
giving me the opportunity to drive his horses. Frank and his
wife Stacey are my family, my adopted family.?
Habke is a racetrack triple threat. In addition to outriding
at Northfield and driving on the Billings circuit, she
competes in racing under saddle races and has two official
RUS victories, both scored on Ohio?s extensive county fair
calendar.
?I?m shooting for a big race at Flamboro Downs in
mid-May,?said Habke. ?I?m already qualified for it on a Frank
Harris horse.?
In the meantime, Habke will continue to patrol and keep
the peace on Northfield?s half-mile oval while picking out
her Billings driving dates.
?I?m happy and I?m healthy,?she said. ?I can?t ask for much
more.?

Oaks ? is run, with big handles and big crowds.
The Derby may be a race that lasts two minutes, but the
buzz, the buildup and the promotion is an almost year-long
event. It?s a big reason why the Derby dwarfs other niche
sporting big events, and it?s not really that close.
Each year when the Derby occurs, harness racing?s
What harness racing must learn
from the Kentucky Derby
The Run for the Roses is a unique racing experience. Harness
racing stakes are not unique, but could be, with some work.
Tomorrow at around 6 pm (EST), the gates will spring open
at Churchill Downs in Louisville, KY and the Kentucky Derby
will be underway. Twenty horses and jockeys will be vying for
position, and over 15 million people across the U.S. will be
riding along with them. Well over $100 million will be bet
legally on the race, at racetracks, via the internet, at OTBs
and at thousands of Kentucky Derby parties from sea to sea.
It?s a spectacular spectacle.
If you watch the Derby, the first thing that might come to
mind would be, ?horse racing ain?t dead?.It isn?t, but the
Derby works so well because it?s not just a horse race, it?s a
perfect storm.
Googl e search es, K entuck y Derb y (b l ue), Daytona 500 (red)
inferiority complex invariably rears its head. Harness racing
participants and fans are down to earth, love their sport, and
when they see the runners treated like Kings, they tend to be
taken aback.
?Well, our sport is good too, y?know. We have the North
America Cup, the Pace, the Jug? ??
The First Saturday in May has history and a following
because it?s a slice of Americana; it?s been that before you
and I were alive, and will be long after we?re gone. It has a
unique pull that sporting events need to have to thrive ? 20
horses will be travelling further than they?ve ever been
asked to go. Most of these 20 horses are meeting for the very
first time, which adds to the interest in the event.
The field comes from prep races that were closely
watched; prep races in Florida and Kentucky and Arkansas
and New York and California. This year, with the Tapit colt
Lani, an entry comes from Japan, via a prep race in Dubai. If
you were interested and followed a horse in the preps, you
are surely interested to watch him or her in the big race.
In the week or two before the race, social media hums with
live video of workouts, gallops, and the ever-present horse
baths. Scoops are filed via Periscope on Twitter. Media, both
inside and outside racing, look for clues on a horse?s health
through trainer and jockey and owner interviews.
Fifteen-and-a-half hours of TV coverage begins with the
draw for posts on Wednesday, which trends on Twitter. On
Friday, another event ? the Kentucky Derby for fillies, the
Harness Racing Update | 4 | May 6, 2016

These events are good. But they are a completely different
animal.
While the Derby is the aforementioned perfect storm,
harness racing big events have a different set of rules, and
parameters. There won?t be a 20 horse field for a North
America Cup where the participants come from all over, and
have never met each other in a race before. A few weeks
after the Cup, these same horses will meet again, contesting
the Meadowlands Pace. And so on.
Creating a thoroughbred-type stakes race buzz for every
harness class seems like trying to put a round peg in a
square hole.
As any good marketer will tell you, your business or sport
has to be what it is, and do what it?s built for; not what you
wish it was built for. When it comes to stakes racing, and big
horses, harness does have an edge.
While thoroughbred fans waited for a possible California
Chrome versus American Pharoah meeting in the Classic, a
race between Zenyatta and Rachel Alexandra, and countless
other matchups that never materialized, harness racing stars
were meeting that weekend. And they were meeting three
weeks from then, and five weeks from then, and eight weeks
from then. Fans can see the stars meet all year, not just once
or twice.
Saturday betting.
I firmly believe stakes season in harness racing can be
much, much bigger, if done right.
Scheduling races at proper spacing, marketing them with
real dollars in a systemic way, and working on phasing out
eliminations, is doable. Seeded pools through a central fund
can increase wagering (and eyeballs) for the races.
Experimenting by placing the races in race four or five
instead of nine or 12 can help handles, too, in my view.
Making sure the casual fans knows there?s a stakes race at
time ?X?this Saturday evening, and it?s a match up they saw
two Saturday?s ago, is compelling. It?s a strong sales point
because it schedules a sport and makes it easier for the
public to consume. Football Sunday works for a reason.
Much of the above would have to be implemented through
strong central leadership, with a few slots dollars. I fully
realize this is an issue, and has been for some time. However,
if you?re like me and love watching great standardbreds race
and want to share them with the world, maybe it?s time to
make it less of an issue, and more of a reality.
This is an asset, but promoting that asset takes some hard
work, and planning.
The problem with stakes season (say for three-year-olds) is
that one race is not only one race; it?s a week to ship, an
elimination race, a final, then another week to ship home and
get settled. The time it takes to participate in one big race is
not optimal. When you add the fact that there are a dozen or
so tracks offering stakes, the sport itself doesn?t showcase
itself very well. While the best should meet the best often,
the schedule doesn?t allow for it.
We realize eliminations tend to be needed to increase
stakes money, but can?t there be a better way?

As for the big races themselves, they tend to be nothing
like the Kentucky Derby, or other thoroughbred stakes races
which bring in huge handle, and big audiences. Often,
elimination winners pick their posts, and in the big event
there?s a huge favorite that gets an easy lead, keying a
merry-go-round race and a small mutuel. Sometimes a deep
12 claimer in the first can outhandle a stakes race in the
ninth.

Further, stakes races are often placed late in the card in
harness racing, which to me is not maximizing eyeballs. Most
horsemen I know have to be at the barn in the morning, and
most bettors are tapped out by then after a full day of

Sand V ic dead at 15
On Friday (April 29), Sand Vic was found dead in his field at
Winbak Farm of Maryland.
New Image Media
?Sand Vic will be missed,?said Garrett Bell, Winbak Farm
general manager. ?He was a great horse to be around and
knew his job in the breeding shed.?
Per Henri k sen i s congratul ated i n th e w i nner's ci rcl e f ol l ow i ng h i s

raci ng f or WEG, and Bi l l O'Donnel l (2nd f rom ri gh t), Presi dent of
th e Central Ontari o Standardbred A ssoci ati on.
Sand Vic, 2, 1:57.3; 3, Q1:54.1f; 1:51.2 ($2,121,269), was the
winner of 23 races. He was a HTA Nova and USHWA Dan
Patch divisional Award Winner for Older Trotting Horses.
Trotters young and old were in the spotlight Monday (May 2)
night at Mohawk Racetrack and fittingly trotting master.
Sand Vic (Mr. Vic? Cindy Q? American Winner) was trained
during his older racing career by Trond Smedshammer for
owner August Meidel. Sand Vic was first developed in his
racing career by Jim Arledge Jr.
Bee In Charge, the three-year-old half-brother to $3.8
million winner Bee A Magician, gave Henriksen a very special
victory Monday at Mohawk. Not only was it the youngster?s
first lifetime win, but it was also the 1,000th North American
training victory for Henriksen, who was also in the sulky for
the milestone.
In the second-race, $14,000 Maiden Trot, Henriksen put Bee
In Charge on top by the 1:01.4 half, was two lengths the best
by the 1:31 three-quarters and had more than three lengths
on their foes by the wire reached in 1:58.
It was just the fourth lifetime start for the
Manofmanymissions? Beehive son, who sold as a yearling for
$130,000. Richard ?Nifty?Norman started out with the colt,
who had difficulty making breaks as a rookie and was sent to
Henriksen at the end of his two-year-old season.
A native of Norway who came to the U.S. in 1980 and
Canada, specifically Norwood, ON, 20 years later, Henriksen
qualified Bee In Charge in early April and then guided him to
a third-place finish two weeks later. The trotter is owned by
Mel Hartman of Ottawa and David McDuffee of Florida, two
of the partners on his famous big sister.
Bee In Charge is the latest talented trotter to emerge from
Henriksen?s care. Other standouts include Hambletonian
winner Nuclear Kosmos, Hambletonian Oaks winner Oolong,
Breeders Crown winner Southwind Serena and $800,000
winner Clerk Magistrate among many others.
At two, Sand Vic was the winner of the Arden Downs
Stakes division, Bluegrass Stakes leg, Event 9 Final, John F
Simpson Stakes leg, Kentucky Sire Stakes leg, Lexington
Breeders Classic elimination and Reynolds Memorial. He was
second in the Kentucky Sire Stakes Final, Lexington Breeders
Classic Final, Northfield Grand Circuit Stake and
Tompkins-Geers Stakes.
At three, Sand Vic won the Currier & Ives Stakes
elimination and was second in a Kentucky Sire Stakes leg. At
four, he was second in the A JCutler Memorial elimination
and Final, Allerage Farm Stakes Final, Breeders Crown Final,
Classic Series division and Nat Ray Stakes.
Sand Vic truly shined as an older racehorse. He won the A J
Cutler Memorial Final twice, Allerage Stakes Final,
American-National Stakes Final, Breeders Crown Final, Maple
Leaf Trot elimination, Nat Ray Final, Trotting Classic leg and
Titan Cup elimination and Final. He was second in A JCutler
Memorial elimination, Patriot Invitation, and W JSullivan
Memorial leg.
As a sire, Sand Vic stood at Winbak of New York and later at
Winbak of Maryland. His progeny include world champion,
Bourbon Bay, 1:52.1f -'15 ($217,678), New York Sire Stakes
Winner, Steuben Lone Pine, 1:55.1s ($189,442) and John
Simpson Memorial Winner, Lady Riviera, 2, 1:58 ($162,492).

Wiggle I t Jiggleit leads
Confederation Cup field of nine
?People aren?t buying Illinois racehorses anymore because
of the uncertainty in the state,?said standardbred horse
breeder Rita Williams.
With no eliminations necessary, an outstanding group of
nine four-year-old pacers will compete in the $244,000
Confederation Cup May 15 at Flamboro Downs.
?It?s safer to buy Indiana or Ohio horses,?said Williams.
?People aren?t certain that Springfield will act to restore our
sport in Illinois. A lot of breeders are going to Indiana to
breed their horses, it just makes more sense for horsemen to
go to other states in which horse racing thrives.?
U.S. Horse of the Year Wiggle It Jiggleit headlines the field.
The George Teague stable star has won four of five starts to
begin his four-year-old season.
Last year, Wiggle It Jiggleit won 22 of 26 starts for earnings
of over $2.2 million. His list of accolades includes victories in
The Meadowlands Pace, Little Brown Jug and Progress Pace.
Trained by Clyde Francis and driven by Montrell Teague,
Wiggle It Jiggleit will prepare for the Confederation Cup in
the Preferred Pace this Saturday at Mohawk Racetrack.
If legislators continue to ignore the plight of horse racing,
more trainers, breeders, blacksmiths, hay and grain farmers,
grooms and other industry workers will move to states like
Ohio where horse racing has exploded at the same time that
Illinois horse racing has imploded.

I llinois horse racing industry
fights fantasy sports bill
The Illinois Harness Horseman?s Association this week
decried legislation that would legalize fantasy sports
gambling while, at the same time, lawmakers have failed to
support a horse racing industry that employs 14,000 people.
?Horsemen in Illinois are suffering at the same time that
the sport is flourishing in other states,?said Illinois Harness
Horseman?s Association president Marty Engel. ?We?re
grateful to legislators who passed gaming legislation in
2012, but Governor Pat Quinn vetoed that bill. Let me be
clear, because of legislative inaction in the last four years,
the industry has suffered greatly.?
Meanwhile, Illinois legislators are currently considering
legalizing fantasy sports gambling.
The seasoned owner is still in the game with a small stake
in horses being trained by Brian Brown, Tony Alagna, Paul
Kelly, Nancy Johannsen, Jonas Czernyson, Ake Swendsted,
Jimmy Takter and Jimmy Arledge.
Sbrocco and his wife will enjoy a fabulous five-day trip to
Sweden visiting famous breeding farms, taking a trip to
Mendhammer, visiting a yearling auction, sightseeing,
enjoying authentic dining at an old world restaurant dating
back to the 1700s, and attending the great race at Solvalla.
SRF is a 27-year-old organization, unique in its work, as it
never relinquishes ownership of its horses. The Elitlopp
raffle, as well as the raffle for a trip to the Prix d'Amerique
help fund the care of 205 trotters and pacers of which 130
are retired due to age or injuries under the full care and
expense of SRF.
SRF thanks Marc and Marcia Goldberg of the Arch Madness
fame for their generous gift of sponsorship of the trip from
the SRF's Twelve Days of Giving campaign in December
2015. "We can only give these horses a chance when special
people like the Goldbergs, and our supporters of this fund
raiser make it possible with their kindness; we so appreciate
this wonderful support," Paula Campbell, SRF's president
added. ? SRF
