Let?s not f orget th at.? Adriano Sorella said there is another side to the owner/trainer dynamic; one that runs counter to what high-profile trainers George Teague, Jr. and Casie Coleman told Harness Racing Update recently about the perils of stables that grew too large and the overly-demanding owners that came with them. For starters, Sorella said he, for one, is not some high-maintenance rich guy horse owner, despite the fact he parted company with Coleman last summer, less than two years after they ? with other partners ? teamed up to win the 2013 Little Brown Jug with Vegas Vacation. The Toronto-based entrepreneur said he has a lot in common with both Teague and Coleman, who started with little and built themselves up to become stars in the sport. Harness Racing Update | 1 | April 15, 2016 How To Succeed i n Busi ness conti nued Less than a decade ago, Sorella was, ?living in a basement apartment and raising a kid. There was no money. It was bad times,?he said. ?I had a leased car. I was begging the leasing company to take it back? I couldn?t figure out how to make rent. It was not nice. It was not a pretty story at all. You run into problems like that, horrible credit. It was not good.? He caught a few breaks, landed a job in online advertising and worked virtually every waking hour for years to build up his clientele and experience. Working on commission, the money eventually started rolling in. That?s when Sorella started his own advertising company ? Union Ad Sales ? taking a full portfolio of clients with him. ?I want to let people know that they can start with nothing and make something of themselves,?he said. He is something of an open book on social media, just like Coleman. This week, Sorella took possession of a Ferrari 458 Italia Spider ? license plate Gidhy Up. In a long post on Facebook that accompanied photos of the sports car, he explained his difficult journey and his enjoy-the-moment mantra as follows, ?In life when you get chances do not waste them, because others might not be around the corner waiting for you. I've always had dreams of fancy cars, houses, and all of that. So today I spoiled myself, because today is now. And I'm here to enjoy it.? His enjoyment includes some 15 young standardbreds he has with trainers Tony Alagna and Nancy Johansson ? four with Johansson and 12 with Alagna, including Thatsoveryverynice, a talented three-year-old pacing filly that earned nearly $150,000 at two that Sorella bought into last week. ?She?s been training down great. I asked (Alagna) a lot of questions, but I didn?t tell him why. I just watched. When I saw the horse training down this winter in Florida, I thought, ?She?s a really nice horse. She?s going with his top three-year-old colts and she?s holding her own.?I went back to watch a lot of her replays,?Sorella said. ?I know Tony owned a fair bit of her and I know Marvin Katz bought into her. She?s got a breeding future ahead of her, too. I?m pretty sure they?ll breed her to the Captain (Captaintreacherous). I said to Tony, ?This filly over here, would you sell a part of her??He was joking around with me and he said, ?Money always talks.?? Sorella is careful when speaking about Coleman. He said the two of them are still friends and he appreciates the success they had together. When talking about the challenges inherent in the owner/trainer dynamic he wants Harness Racing Update | 2 | April 15, 2016 How To Succeed i n Busi ness conti nued advertising. I try to walk them through it. Can it be annoying sometimes? Maybe, but you shouldn?t feel guilty to ask because the person on the other end is profiting off it. They?re providing a service. ?If you don?t talk to a trainer and ask questions, most of the time some of them might not give you any answers. They might not call you and tell you what?s going on with the horses. So, you have to ask questions. I don?t know if some people like that or don?t like it, but I?m not a person? who picks up the phone and calls a million times or anything like that. I just ask a question at the beginning of the week, ?How are the horses training??I then will see what the answer is like. Most of the time, you can tell by your training bill or your vet bill how good your horse or how bad your horse actually is. A vet bill will tell a different tale than anything else, same with a training bill. You can tell what?s going on.? Dave Landry Sorel l a w as a part-ow ner of 2013 Li ttl e Brow n Jug ch ampi on V egas V acati on. it known he isn?t specifically talking about Coleman, but rather the nature of any horse racing business partnership that can turn fractious when horses aren?t winning and owners are burning through money. Sorella got started in horse ownership through the Standardbred Breeders of Ontario Association?s (SBOA) Owner Mentorship Program. Now he?s trying to pay that experience forward by working to attract new owners to the game through his Team Sorella social media initiative. So far, Team Sorella has given away a slew of prizes to those that like his page and share posts. ?Without owners in this game, there?s no trainers. Let?s not forget that. When owners go to a sale and spend $4 million, that trainer is going to make five per cent and their training bills on those horses. The better horses you buy for a trainer, the better it is for that trainer. Everybody wants to win, so owners and trainers are always on the same page when it comes to winning and when the horses are doing well? It?s when the horses are not doing well or they?re sick, that owners and trainers have different agendas,?he said. Sorella said a particularly rough patch with the horses in 2015 caused him to switch trainers. ?When things don?t go well, don?t you make changes? Who sits there and just loses money??he asked. While Sorella is known for his charity and generosity, he is careful to treat owning horses as a business where minding the money is critical. ?You never know when a horse is going to hurt itself in the stall or on the track. So, you have to be ready for the ups and downs. But, at the same time, you need a lot of information in this business. You can?t just be writing checks to vets or trainers without knowing about your horses,?he said. ?You shouldn?t feel guilty for having to ask questions? I don?t make people feel guilty when they ask questions about Harness Racing Update | 3 | April 15, 2016 How To Succeed i n Busi ness conti nued ?The reason I started this is to show people how you can get people interested in horse racing. I know if you give away a lot of free stuff, people will be interested because you?re giving away a lot of free stuff, which is what we?re doing, but the preliminary thing we?re doing is? we?re specifically targeting harness racing audiences with the advertising we?re doing. We?re doing very geo-targeted advertising through the Facebook platform to grab anybody that?s involved with harness racing,?he said. ?So, the fans that we?re getting are all harness racing people, somebody that?s involved in horse racing ? grooms, trainers, vets, harness racing people that we?re bringing over. The idea is to build a fan base and then, eventually, somewhere down the road, we?re launching a website. Being able to have these people that we could introduce to some sort of an initiative to get brand new owners into the game, or continue to keep the people we already have in the game by maybe putting them into partnerships or into groups that are sustainable that they won?t get hurt financially. ?I like to see new owners and see people getting involved. That?s the reason why. You try to inspire people to say, ?Hey, you can get involved in racing for minimum money to start off with and if you have a little bit of luck you can continue to go.?? Through it all, he said he hasn?t forgotten where he started and how far he has come. ?Nine years ago, I started with peanuts and I got lucky. A bunch of breaks happened for me and I got lucky in the business,?Sorella said. ?I?m investing a lot of money in the business and sometimes people take it the wrong way. They look at you or other owners and think everybody is just born with a silver spoon in their mouth and it?s just not like that. ?I want to let people know that they can start with nothing and make something of themselves. I want them to know where I came from.? Harness Racing Update | 4 | April 15, 2016 Harness Raci ng Update seen that amount bet on an at least one card I?ve seen (and probably others). On another race night recently, over a million was wagered in one pool, because of a mandatory payout of a super high five. What changed? What helped Pompano gain market share in a sport where it?s very hard to achieve such success? In a nutshell, Pompano relied on the fundamentals and stuck with them. Pompano Park h as become a maj or-l eague si gnal w i th h arness bettors My first recollection of Pompano Park was sitting in a grandstand watching the simulcast of the Breeders Crown on a 17-inch tube TV. I remember Goalie Jeff and Peach Pit, OK Bye and Artsplace, Bay?s Fella, Peace Corps and dozens of other good horses. Gary Siebel was calling the action and all the greats were on hand for some seriously good horse racing. In the quarter century or so since then ? up to say last year ? I don?t have even one other memory of the 23rd Avenue oval, because I have not watched a single race from there. Like most of you I suspect, this track just wasn?t on the radar. - The Pick 4 was doing virtually no handle, so they lowered the takeout to 12 per cent. This acted like a neon sign to bettors, flashing ?we want your business.?Over time, as the pools grew, so did the guarantees, helping the bet along even more. - Pompano began distributing their signal more. You can bet Pompano almost anywhere; at any ADW, OTB, or racetrack in North America. Believe it or not, not all tracks do this. - Exposing the product to more people is often under-utilized in horse racing, but not so at Pompano. TVG shows Pompano racing quite often, and California outlets have begun taking the races for their bettors (sometimes this is hard to accomplish, because California has a quota on how many outside state races they can show). - In 2016 there are walls of televisions showing racing from everywhere. If your signal is old and dull, it does not stand Over the past year or so, that all changed. I have bet more, and watched more races at Pompano than I ever have, and it appears I am not alone. In 2013, Pompano Park was doing under $25 million in handle for the entire meet, an average of just over $176,000 per card. To put that into perspective, Gulfstream Park (just down the road from Pompano) did $32 million on one card ? the Florida Derby ? a couple of weeks ago. Pick 4?s ? a harness racing staple ? could not even muster a meagre $2,000 in the pools at Pompano most nights. Win pools were microscopic. This was just another low handle harness track in a sea of low handle harness tracks. The past couple of seasons, things have changed for the better at Pompano. Total handle exceeded $44 million in 2015 and topped $350,000 per card. With 16 races left in 2016, Pompano has already exceeded $54 million in total handle this year ? averaging just shy of $500,000 per card. That?s an increase in total handle of 122 per cent in three years and this year?s total is likely to exceed $60 million. Those Pick 4 pools, which at one time no one in their right mind would bet into, are no longer $2,000, but often 10 times that amount. The track that would be lucky to see a million dollars in handle in a week?s worth of racing has Harness Racing Update | 5 | April 15, 2016 Brush A nd Crush conti nued out. Pompano has revamped their signal, and it looks fresh and professional. - Timing ? racing cards when everyone else is, sending the gates away when two or three other tracks are doing the same, too early or too late post times, etc ? can play a huge part in handle growth, or the lack of it. Pompano has moved their post times later, and rarely go off when another track does. They also have some superior mid-week cards that attract dollars. Post-drags (a pet peeve of mine) play a part in this as well, but at least they aren?t going off when others are. - A solid social media presence can really help handle and drive some eyeballs, and Pompano with announcer and jack-of-all-trades, Gabe Prewitt, does a super job. As well, if there?s a carryover, you hear about it on digital mediums. In fact, a flash carryover with barely 10 minutes notice brought in $46,000 in new money just recently. - All of the above help raise handle, but you can?t increase the bet by 100 per cent on just those items. Although the Pompano product is not top-shelf by any means, they have attracted more horses per race and that makes a huge difference. It allows for deeper fields and slightly higher payoffs for punters. I have field size up over one full horse per race from a couple of years ago. I give the team at Pompano a world of credit, starting with director of racing Brett Revington. To me, the most exciting thing about the growth of the Florida track is that there?s a chance this can get even better. In my years of studying the business of the sport, I have come to the conclusion that there are inflection points for nightly handle, where certain amounts are more important than others, and handle acts non-linear. I believe $800,000 per card is an important spot on the curve. If handle is above that amount the pools are deep enough to attract more money from bigger bettors. Below it, these bigger bettors look elsewhere. Pompano is straddling that wagering level now, and if they can increase it slightly, I believe this ?little? signal can become even bigger. If you?re a harness fan or bettor with nothing to do one week night, download a program, log into Twitter, follow Gabe, play along, and give the track a try. A lot of others seem to be enjoying it and you might, too. Pompano is a bright spot, in a sport in dire need of them. Harness Racing Update | 6 | April 15, 2016 M eat and potatoes, w i th a sch mear Despite a decade-long detour in the bagel business, Richard Johnson has spent most of his life training horses. Today, he?s second to Ron Burke?s powerhouse stable in the Meadowlands?trainer rankings. by Dave Little Richard Johnson is one of the leading trainers at the current Meadowlands meeting. His 23 wins are second only to Ron Burke?s 32, and Burke has more than twice as many starts. Yes, things are good for Johnson, who has been involved in the sport since his teenage years. ?My boss from ShopRite was a gambler,?said Courtesy Meadowlands Racetrack Johnson, 55. ?To this day, we?re good Ri ch ard Joh nson friends. I started going to the track with him when I was 16. We?d go to Freehold on Wednesdays, on his day off, and watch the warmups. We had some great times. That?s how I got started. Then, I met a girl in high school whose father had some horses.? you are doing, of course. ?I spent about 10 years in the bagel business. We had a nice little run there,?said Johnson. ?We had a little bagel shop in Teaneck (N.J.) before everybody was selling bagels. We rolled them there, we baked them there. It wound up being a nice little business.? ?I?ve been back racing horses full-time for some time now, but even when I was in the other business, I always kept a foot or a toe in the harness game. I?ve been in and out and back and forth (of the bagel business since) on several occasions, but rents have gone crazy and I?ve been out of that business for about eight years now.? Are there similarities between the bagel and horse businesses? ?Both are time consuming,?said Johnson. ?A lot of hours. But I always feel you get out of it what you put into it.? The big question on everybody?s mind in the harness game at the Big M: Will casino gaming be necessary for the Johnson?s first job came soon thereafter working for long-time Meadowlands horseman Mike Gagliardi. ?I?m sure I still do things he taught me,?said Johnson. ?He was a great-hearted guy. I was a young kid. He gave me a great opportunity. He had a heart of gold. Good horseman, good driver. He sent me on my way.? Johnson?s career as a harness trainer was gathering momentum in the two years spanning 1991-92, when, according to United States Trotting Association statistics, he sent out 44 winners for earnings of just over $600,000, but one piece of bad luck sent him to another line of work for a spell. ?I had a horse, Admirals Galley (an earner of $324,000 from 1991-92),?said Johnson. ?He broke his foot unexpectedly at Freehold in an overnight prepping for a stakes race. That owner got sour on the harness game and then things got slow for me.? Enter a business with a lot of holes, unless you know what Harness Racing Update | 7 | April 15, 2016 Ri ch ard Joh nson conti nued long-term survival of the sport? ?If that?s what?s going to increase the purses, then yes,?said Johnson. ?I?ve been around long enough and saw this business stand by itself. Unfortunately, times have changed. I don?t see new generations of horseplayers. It does take some time and some effort to go there and enjoy yourself handicapping. The question is, are there a new generation of those types of horseplayers? There are just too many other options available to them.? Johnson said he?s not surprised about the high handle numbers at the Meadowlands, despite a decrease in the racing?s talent level. countless other racehorses. I was a claiming guy for years, but I still like to fool around with some young ones. I won a non-winners of two Friday (April 8) night at the Meadowlands and to me that was a great thrill. It was a horse we developed and been through ups and downs with.? So, Richard, ever consider leaving the Garden State for larger pots of purse gold? ?I?m a Jersey guy. I?m born and bred here. I came into the business in 1980, the Meadowlands has always been the place.? Is it still? ?I don?t know. I hope so.? ?There was strong on-track handle before simulcasting. (Wagering here) has always been enticing, whether it?s the mile track or the 10-horse fields. So, I?m not surprised, because I?ve been around the Meadowlands for 30-something years.? Johnson also seems energized about the new-look driver colony at the Big M. ?It?s a new generation,?he said. ?There are a lot of guys making a name for themselves. They are getting lots of opportunities.? A big part of the harness business finds Johnson reading condition sheets from all tracks on the Eastern seaboard, so that he can take advantage of out-of-town opportunities to keep his owners happy. ?We are going to race a little bit at Chester (Harrah?s Philadelphia), Pocono, Yonkers, Freehold. We pick our spots and are hitting a lot of tracks. Shipping horses is expensive. The more you can keep your expenses down, the more money the owners make. You want to take into consideration how far you are shipping. You have to be careful with the class of horse, how much will it cost us round trip and how many times we are going to go. This all adds to our expenses for the month.? Johnson said that ?Delaware is kind of a closed crowd and Pennsylvania is trying to do the same.?The condition sheets at those tracks restrict (or prefer) horses to be from those specific states to get in, and Johnson thinks it would be good for New Jersey horsemen to have opportunities like that. So, will you not ship if the Meadowlands sees casino money roll in and bolster the purse account? ?It?s hard to say, it depends on the class of horse,?said Johnson. ?I was born and bred Meadowlands. I saw the track in its heyday, when they used to bet a million on track on Monday nights. Higher purses would certainly be nice. We would be home. We?re from New Jersey.? One might call Johnson a ?meat and potatoes?trainer. They?d be right. He?s always had good overnight stock. And on occasion, something a little better. ?I?ve had no world champions per se, but I?ve had some good racehorses,?said Johnson. ?($500,000 earner) Jacsue Brooks would be the first in line, he stayed good for years. I had a trotting mare, ($700,000 earner) Victors Vicky, who raced at Yonkers for years. Plus Admirals Galley, and Harness Racing Update | 8 | April 15, 2016 Harness Raci ng Update lines and is terrible when the roof is closed, but the Toronto Blue Jays are not moving to Christie Pits (home of the amateur Toronto Maple Leafs of the Intercounty Baseball League) because of it. Raci ng year-round at M oh aw k w oul d be a maj or mi stak e I preface my comments by saying that since I live in Campbellville and have a farm there, year-round racing at Mohawk would both enhance the value of my property and make my life as a trainer more convenient. That said, I still vehemently oppose moving to Mohawk year-round, an idea that has been floated often in the last six months by the Woodbine Entertainment Group (WEG). Since 2012, and the cancellation of the Slot at Racetracks Program (SARP), we have already seen the closing of several harness tracks, including Windsor, Woodstock and Sudbury, with Kawartha Downs likely following suit in the near future. Additionally, Hiawatha, Dresden and Georgian Downs have much reduced racing dates, which in the case of Georgian is a terrible shame as it is not only a well-built and inviting facility for fans and horsepeople alike, it also boasts a good five-eighths mile track, which has resulted in primarily half-mile track racing in Ontario for most of the year. Except on stake race days, does this closeness factor translate into handle? Not really. At Western Fair, the grandstand is on top of the horses and no one goes outside, except on Molson Pace night. The problem of the horses being far away at Woodbine has nothing to do with whether or not attendance is better or handle is up. It's the same track that apparently they are going to run seven to eight turf races on, which WEG CEO Jim Lawson is touting as a great development. While many in harness racing complain about racing at Woodbine, it?s interesting that it is the very track the thoroughbred people want back. Maybe it's our product, not its distance from the grandstand. I'll match Woodbine against Mohawk on a regular Monday in October any day. Talk about having room to shoot a cannon. Try those Mondays at Mohawk in the fall. Then try them in January. That will be interesting. At least at Woodbine we get some of the patrons left over from the runners. Whether harness racing is at Woodbine or Mohawk matters little to the bettors ? and handle figures support this. Nobody goes to Mohawk either, except on special nights. I Leaving Woodbine and moving full-time to Mohawk, despite there initially being no reduction in racing dates, will still mean the closing of yet another harness racing facility, this one in the critical Greater Toronto Area (GTA). Harness racing sees very little mainstream media coverage as it is. Once it physically leaves the city, it will get none. Maybe most are too young to understand, but Toronto does have a long history of harness racing with Dufferin Park, Thorncliff Park and of course Greenwood Raceway. If we leave Woodbine, harness racing will never come back to the Canada?s biggest city. I think it is also important to understand WEG?s thought process in this. Its incentive for moving harness racing to Mohawk full-time is not for the betterment of its standardbred product. It is for the betterment of its thoroughbred product. The plan calls for turning the harness track at Woodbine into a smaller turf track with the belief that having two turf tracks will increase its thoroughbred horse population, entries, and, subsequently, handle. Giving up another racetrack because the sight lines at Woodbine are bad is crazy. The Rogers Centre has bad sight Harness Racing Update | 9 | April 15, 2016 Harness Raci ng Update live in Campbellville and I wouldn't go to Mohawk in January if it had a Beaver Tail stand. And year-round racing at one facility just gets old. The product will be stale. There is no beginning and end of seasons. Traditionally, in all sports, an opening and closing of seasons is important. Casino expansion is already approved for Woodbine, but year-round racing at Mohawk hinges on the Ontario Lottery and Gaming corporation (OLG) approving an expanded casino at Mohawk. If that approval is granted, Lawson told the Toronto Sun WEG would likely spend between $3 million and $5 million to winterize Mohawk for year-round patrons. It likely will require much more than that. Mohawk presently has an inadequate, outdated, un-winterized grandstand. The paddock needs improvement ? for comparison purposes, the Woodbine harness racing paddock (which was just recently built and will serve no purpose if we move) cost $10 million to build ? and even the Mohawk parking lot needs improvements. Even if Mohawk does get a casino, there still should be at least a three-to-four-month winter harness meet at Woodbine when the thoroughbreds are absent. With a little work we could even do it on their Tapeta track, which has been successfully tested on standardbreds elsewhere. A l l ard youngest trai ner to reach 3,000 career w i ns When 29-year-old Rene Allard recorded his 3,000th career training win Thursday night at Yonkers Raceway, he became the youngest person in the sport?s history to reach that milestone. Allard reached 3,000 when Brian Sears drove Daylon Miracle to victory in the 11th race. It was the trainer?s third win of the night. Allard first got his trainer's license at age 17, racing in and around his native Quebec. Today he races primarily at The Downs at Mohegan Sun Pocono and Yonkers, but could turn up at Harrah's Philadelphia, Saratoga, Monticello, or Pompano Park, and he even did a stint this winter at Hawthorne in Chicago. In 2012, he had his single-season high for winners with 454; the $6,177,017 his charges rang up last year produced his best money-winning season ever. He has never had a season-ending UTR below .300. His lifetime purse earnings are approaching $29 million. ? Jerry Connors and Frank Drucker There are just so many negatives to moving to Mohawk full-time the fan-friendly experience alone does not justify it. What people enjoy most about Mohawk ? the closeness of the tarmac, the barbeque, the restaurant balcony, etc. ? is primarily enjoyable because of the warm summer weather. Campbellville is consistently three to four degrees colder than even Milton in the winter months and it has a documented fog problem in the spring and the fall. Yes, horsepeople will like the convenience of racing year-round at Mohawk and the reduced cost of shipping. But I have spoken with several fellow horsemen who echo my viewpoint and share my concerns about leaving Woodbine. I am worried that if Woodbine becomes this new dramatic facility Lawson brags about, harness racing will be stuck out in the badlands of Mohawk in perpetuity and one day, someone on the WEG board will come to the conclusion the standardbreds don?t deserve the equal share of the revenue that exists now between the breeds. To leave the GTA permanently will complete the death knell that started to chime when we left Greenwood. We will rue the day we race at Mohawk full-time. This time, it was with Next Success, a 1:52.4 winner of the colt and gelding final on Thursday (April 14) after the foursome had combined on Tuesday (April 12), for Use Your Noodle?s filly pace winner. Corey Cal l ah an w on h i s sev enth strai gh t Dov er Dow ns dri v i ng ti tl e. Thursday was closing day of the track's 47th season and the annual meet ending awards were also handed out. For the seventh consecutive season, Corey Callahan was leading driver. Dylan Davis won the leading trainer title for the third straight season. Wiggle It Jiggleit won the Delaware Valley U.S. Harness Writer?s Association?s Horse of the Meet award. Next Success began his charge to catch race-favorite John?s Dream and Tim Tetrick in mid-backstretch. Morand pulled the altered son of Veeza? Quick Question out of fourth and hastily reached the leader on the final turn. After a short stretch racing together Next Success took over and sped to his second straight victory lowering his lifetime mark to 1:52.4. John?s Dream held second in front of Power To Perform and Tony Morgan, third. Stellar City, owned by Howard Taylor and Rich Lombardo, won the $20,000 DSBF consolation in a lifetime best 1:53.4 with Tim Tetrick in the bike. On Wednesday (April 13), trainer/driver Carlo Poliseno?s strategy came through as Cicada?s Song caught race favorite Epic Smash in the closing strides for a 1:57.3 triumph at Dover Downs in the $100,000 Delaware Standardbred Breeders Fund three-year-old filly trot final. Epic Smash was odds-on favorite from the rail following two straight wire-to-wire victories, while second choice Cicada?s Song had post three. ?My plan was to leave fast and find room second behind Epic Smash. I liked my chances sitting behind him when we reached the stretch,?said Poliseno. is Dusty Winner and her dam Koala Kat, both owned and raced for Mrs. Dunavant for a number of starts at Dover Downs several years ago. Since the Dunavant?s resides in Virginia, Cicada?s Song is that state?s trotting champion as well. On Tuesday, Morand and Use Your Noodle tracked down Apple Bottom Jeans in the stretch to score a lifetime best 1:51.1 triumph to win the $100,000 Delaware Standardbred Breeders Fund final. Apple Bottom Jeans ? a winner of both the Harrington and Dover Downs $100,000 freshman finals last fall ? quickly assumed command this time nearing the half-mile post. Driver Montrell Teague then led easily along the backstretch until Morand pulled Use Your Noodle, a brown daughter of Artsina? Gophobia, up to challenge heading to the final turn. The pair then dueled until mid-stretch when Use your Noodle finally got to the front along the inside notching her third straight victory for Henry Faragalli III, Art Feeney, Trevor Johnson and Nanticoke Racing. For longtime accomplished trainer Les Givens who has been in the DSBF winner?s circle almost two dozen times since the program began, he said, ?This is the first time I?ve ever won the final with a pacer!? Use Your Noodle now is three-for-four this year a winner of $70,920 and a six-time winner, with six seconds and a third her career good for $128,681 in purses. Apple Bottom Jeans finished second with Eternal Ring (Jonathan Roberts) third. On Monday (April 11), Seafood Scrappy was around at the finish to win the $100,000 Delaware Standardbred Breeders Fund final for three-year-old male trotters at Dover Downs. With the race favorites dropping like flies early, Seafood Scrappy, also a survivor after breaking stride on the first turn, quickly recovered for driver Ross Wolfenden. Odds-on favorite previously unbeaten in both impressive preliminary wins, Chipoffthewall (Tony Morgan) then went off-stride after second-choice Mondello (Art Stafford Jr.) broke in front of him. From there it was a wild-west show. Morgan got Chipoffthewall back trotting, caught the field quickly and then roared up on the outside to challenge for the lead before breaking stride again on the final turn. In the stretch, Overnight Shipper (George Dennis) had the lead turning down the lane before he made a misstep. 99-1 shot Samuel J (Vic Kirby) took the lead. Then 22-1 Outside The Line, (Tetrick) made the front while Seaford Scrappy closed with a rush to win the photo in 1:59 for trainer Josh Green and owners Seaford Delight and JJ& M stables. Outside The Line and Samuel J, second and third, combine with the winner for a 5-3-7 trifecta paying $13,077.80. The victory was Seafood Scrappy?s second of the year, third lifetime, with his career bankroll soaring to $94,810. ? Marv Bachrad / Dover Downs Cicada?s Song is truly a Jane Dunavant-homebred. Miami Magic finished second, while Smash Hit was third. Hills Angel, Wanaka and Windsong Magic scored first leg victories on Thursday (April 14) in the Celias Counsel Series at Mohawk Racetrack. A daughter of Kadabra? Diamond Image, Windsong Magic improved her 2016 record to four wins in seven starts with Thursday?s victory. The sophomore trotting filly, who was unraced at two, is owned by Kristine Green and Paulette Loyens. A total of 24 three-year-old trotting fillies were split into three $16,000 divisions for the first leg of the three-week event. Hills Angel made a second-quarter move to the lead and never looked back en route to a 2:01.3 victory in the first division. The John Bax trainee got away fourth heading into the first turn for driver Paul MacDonell. Trotting into a stiff backstretch wind, Hills Angel moved from fourth to first to lead by the half in 1:02.3. After a third-quarter of :31, Hills Angel was able to sprint home and hold off her rivals to win by half a length in 2:01.3. True Muscle finished second, while Dottie was third. A daughter of Muscle Hill? Balance The Paige, Hills Angel was making her 2016 debut after winning once in 10 starts as a rookie. She is owned by Bax Stable and Glengate Farms. Hills Angel increased her career earnings to $32,820 with the victory. She paid $3.80. The second division was a showdown between Flowers N Song, the 3/5 favorite, and Wanaka, the 3/2 second choice. Wanaka got away second, but was quickly circled to the lead at the opening-quarter by driver Trevor Henry. The public?s second-choice took the field by the half in :59.3, while Flowers N Song began to charge up from fourth for driver Doug McNair. Flowers N Song surged up to overtake the lead from Wanaka and post a three-quarter time of 1:28.1. In the stretch, Henry angled his charge off the back of Flowers N Songs and Wanaka sprinted by to win by 4½ lengths in 1:56.4. Flowers N Song was second, while P L Jill was third. A daughter of Manofmanymissions? Classic Belle, Wanaka now has four wins in nine starts this season for trainer Shannon Henry. In the third division, Bax trainees were front and centre again with a one-two finish. Bax pupil Miami Magic was put on the front by driver Steve Byron, while stablemate Windsong Magic and driver MacDonell followed closely behind in second. The Bax trainees switched positions heading to the half and that would be the final front-end move. Windsong Magic Windsong Magic lowered her career-mark by two-fifths of a second with the victory and pushed her bankroll to $29,240. She paid $3.30 to win. ? Mark McKelvie / WEG Standardbred Communications Ri esberry conv i cted of cri mi nal of f ense f or gi v i ng h orse perf ormance-enh ancers Late last week, the Ontario Superior Court of Justice handed former standardbred horseman Derek Riesberry a sentence for fraud and attempted fraud. The sentence marked the end of a five-and-a-half-year legal process that stemmed from Riesberry?s illegal use of performance-enhancing substances in racehorses. As an article by the Windsor Star explains, Riesberry was convicted of fraud over $5,000 and attempted fraud over $5,000. Riesberry?s fraud over $5,000 conviction came from having injected a racehorse with a performance enhancer just prior to a pari-mutuel horse race. Riesberry has been handed a $2,500 fine for that offence. Riesberry?s attempted fraud over $5,000 conviction stemmed from his intention to inject another horse with a performance enhancer before another pari-mutuel horse race six weeks later. Riesberry was caught before he was able to inject the horse, which was subsequently scratched from the race it was scheduled to race in. Riesberry has been handed a $1,250 fine for that offence. In total, Riesberry has been fined $3,750. His licence is suspended and he has no intention of racing again, according to his lawyer Andrew Bradie. The case was the first time a trainer was prosecuted criminally in Canada for the use of performance-enhancing drugs. A similar case involving Windsor trainer Chris Haskell, still presumed to be innocent, has been delayed while awaiting the outcome of Riesberry?s case. ?(Riesberry) has been branded with the scarlet letter of a cheat, which is a terrible thing,?assistant Crown attorney Brian Manarin told the Windsor Star. ?He?s going to have to Harness Racing Update | 12 | April 15, 2016 Harness Raci ng Update do a lot of things to make amends for shooting up a horse with a performance-enhancing drug. It's a terrible thing to be found guilty of, but he's not public enemy No. 1. He's a person who made a serious error in judgment. He shouldn't go to jail for that, but he should get a criminal record, which is what he got." A field of 10 three-year-old pacing fillies contested the $40,400 Blossom Final. Heavenly Hill was sent off as the heavy favorite after a convincing victory in last week?s second leg. ? Standardbred Canada, with files from Windsor Star The public?s choice got away third for driver Jonathan Drury, as 90-1 shot Radar Trap and Randy Waples made the front from post-nine to post an opening-quarter of :27.2. Jody Jamieson quickly pulled the pocket in the second-quarter with Noone To Depend On, but Waples was not in a giving mood. Track s conf i rmed f or 2017 Worl d Dri v i ng Ch ampi onsh i p Standardbred Canada is pleased to announce that all host racetracks for the 2017 World Driving Championship (WDC) have now been confirmed. The event will be hosted at five different racetracks in four different provinces between August 12 and 18, 2017, which will offer the competing drivers the opportunity to see much of Canada during the competition. The 2017 WDC, which will feature a field of 10 of the world?s best harness drivers, will kick off Aug. 12 at Century Downs Racetrack and Casino near Calgary, AB. The drivers will then head to Ontario for the next two legs. Mohawk Racetrack in Campbellville will play host to the second leg on Aug. 14, followed by the third leg on Aug. 15 at Georgian Downs in Innisfil. The action then moves to Quebec on Aug. 16 where Hippodrome 3R will play host to the fourth leg before the drivers head to Prince Edward Island and Red Shores Racetrack and Casino at Charlottetown Driving Park for the fifth and final leg of the WDC on Aug. 18. Delegates attending the World Trotting Conference (WTC) in Charlottetown will be able to take in all of the action of the final leg which is one of the highlights of Old Home Week. The WDC, which is held in conjunction with the WTC will coincide with the 250th Anniversary of horse racing in Canada, and Canada 150 celebrations. Dexter Dunn of New Zealand is the defending WDC champion having been victorious in the 2015 event hosted in Australia. ? Standardbred Canada Heavenly Hill benefited from a front-end duel to win the Blossom Series final Monday night (April 11) at Mohawk Racetrack. Radar Trap and Noone To Depend On waged war by the half in :55.2. Around the final turn, Drury angled Heavenly Hill out from third and went three-wide around the lead pair, who began to fade. The favorite posted a three-quarter time of 1:24.2 and pulled away from her rivals in the lane. Heavenly Hill stopped the clock for a three-length victory in 1:53.4. Windsun Glory finished second, while Evangelin Seelster was third. Heavenly Hill?s victory was the second series final victory in three days for owner George Munniksma and trainer Carmen Auciello. The daughter of Art Colony? Look Cheap now has three wins in six starts this season. The Blossom final was the fifth career victory for Heavenly Hill and pushes her career earnings over $138,000. The clocking of 1:53.4 knocked two-fifths of a second off her previous career-best. Heavenly Hill paid $2.90 to win. ? Mark McKelvie / WEG Standardbred Communications Case scores 400th career trai ni ng w in In late-March Luanne Case scored her 400th career training win which is believed to place her in the top 85 women trainers in the sport?s history.
