Do you want to know how to make a Swedish pancake? Stand just inside the main entrance to the Solvalla trotting track in Stockholm just before they open the gates on Elitlopp Sunday morning. If you fail to move fast enough, you?ll made into a pancake by a steamroller of Swedish trotting fans who pour through the gates and make a mad dash to secure the best spots for viewing Sweden?s greatest racing day. The Swedes take their trotting very seriously. They know the horses well and they appreciate greatness. Often when an Elitlopp starter steps onto the track in the backstretch for a warm-up mile, a rhythmic applause begins. The Swedish fans know they?re seeing the best in the world, and they willingly show their appreciation. In addition to their love of trotting, the Swedes are surely also showing their joy for the spectacular weather that often accompanies the Elitlopp weekend. Late May is a wondrous time to be in the Stockholm as flowering trees and bulbs are Harness Racing Update | 1 | May 29, 2016 El i tl opp conti nued bursting into bloom everywhere you look. By Elitlopp time, Swedes have endured a long, dark winter and they?re ready to enjoy some sunshine and superstar trotters. A Swedish friend once told me on Elitlopp weekend, ?Swedes enjoy the sun so much now because they see so little of it in winter.? The enthusiasm of the crowd rocks the string of grandstands that line the homestretch at Solvalla. The track apron is packed so tightly with trotting fans that even Emmitt Smith or Walter Payton would be stymied if they tried to wedge their way through the crowd. And loud? The Elitlopp crowd makes more noise than any other group of racing fans I?ve heard. I swear that farm animals in Finland get spooked when the Elitlopp crowd lets loose with a roar. My first Elitlopp was 1988 when Mack Lobell defeated a star-studded cast that included American expatriates Sugarcane Hanover and Napoletano. Lou Guida, Mack?s spokesman and one of his owners, swaggered with understandable pride as he and John Campbell led their trotting star up the Solvalla stretch after the victory. My next Elitlopp came four years later and it resulted in victory for Canada?s Billyjojimbob, but his entourage was the antithesis of Mack?s. Owners Lori and Mike Wade were polar opposites of Guida. That afternoon they were not gnoshing on salmon and potatoes in the restaurant at Solvalla, but instead schlepping their star horse in the quarantine area during the warm-ups and race. I encountered Lori at a lovely pre-race evening party at Millesgarten, a park on the waterfront in Stockholm with a plethora of sculptures. I asked her where Mike was and she said simply, ?With the horse.? Hospitality parties were fine, but the Wades had their priorities straight, and their priority was the well-being of their horse. Their efforts paid off. Billyjojimbob won in straight heats, defeating the great mare Peace Corps. The Wades stood proudly with their pride and joy in the winner?s circle as ?Oh,Canada?was played. They were dressed simply in white tee shirts with a bright red maple leaf. I?m not a Canadian, but even I got misty-eyed because I was so happy for them. A Swedish trotting journalist was also moved by their victory. He told me later that it was one of his favorite Harness Racing Update | 2 | May 29, 2016 El i tl opp conti nued Elitlopps despite the fact that the winner had no connection to Sweden. ?But Lori and Mike were jeans people,?he explained to me. That?s true. They were wearing jeans ? clean and neat jeans? with their Maple Leaf tree shirts. ?In Sweden we think of trotting as a sport for the people, everyday people,?the journalist explained to me. ?It?s a sport where ordinary people, like farmers or office workers, can participate. It?s not just a sport for the very rich. To see a young couple wearing jeans win the Elitlopp just reminds us that dreams can come true in trotting.? (One of the amusing memories of that race was hearing Swedes try to pronounce the winner?s name. Not only was it a run-on name based on ?The Waltons?TV series, but most Swedes pronounced the ?j?as a ?y.? My first personal connection to the Elitlopp came in 1973 when Flower Child traveled to Sweden to represent the red, white, and blue. I had been the caretaker for Flower Child for a brief time, and he did his followers proud in Sweden when he trotted the equivalent of the first 2:00 mile in Europe in the Elitlopp. Mack Lobell?s victory in 1988 really brought the Elitlopp into the spotlight for Americans, and our best trotters began making pilgrimages to Solvalla each year. The superb mares Elma and Fresh Yankee had won the Elitlopp for North American owners in the 1960s, but there was a hiatus of North American-owned winners until Mack came along. Moni Maker in 1999 was the last North American winner. So they often saluted the Elitlopp winner named ?Billy-Yo-Yim-Bob.? Owners of invited Elitlopp horses are treated like royalty when they?re in Sweden. Travel costs are paid and an American owner of an Elitlopp horse once told me, ?I never got a chance to take my wallet out the whole time I was in Sweden. They paid for everything.? The Elitlopp was first contested in 1952, and, starting in the 1960s, American racing executive Stan Bergstein made sure that North American horses were represented. Even an average racing fan visiting Solvalla at Elitlopp time will enjoy Swedish hospitality as the trotting people are very proud of their sport and will be happy to answer any Harness Racing Update | 3 | May 29, 2016 El i tl opp conti nued questions. And in many cases they know more about what is happening in North American trotting than we natives do. Certainly my first trip to Solvalla opened up my eyes to new worlds ? quite literally. I had never seen the ?volt start? method used, and it is quite common in Europe when horses are handicapped by distance. It?s basically a walk-up start without a mobile gate. Larger fields are prevalent in Sweden and throughout Europe, and large fields usually make for more exciting races. I also saw my first cold-blood race at Solvalla, too, when the famed Norwegian Alm Svarten won. Cold-bloods are trotters that are smaller and heavier-bodied than standardbreds, and they are unique to trotting in northern Europe. Where to watch this morning?s Elitlopp If you can?t make it to the Meadowlands this morning (Sunday, May 29) to watch and wager on the Elitlopp (doors open at 9 a.m.), here?s a link to watch a live stream from Solvalla Racetrack. Another option is to pay $3.95 for a 24-hour subscription to racingday.com. There is English analysis and unlimited access to all the racing and replays that day. The post time for the first of the two Elitlopp eliminations (race nine) is 9:22 a.m. (EST). ? Moira Fanning The fastest and richest coldblood is the Swedish hero Jarvsofaks, a winner of 201 races in 234 starts, including a streak of 42 straight wins. He earned 21 million Swedish kronor or over $2.5 U.S. at today?s rates. The Elitlopp is an extraordinary experience ? for the connections of the participating horses and certainly for the trotting fan that loves great horses and a great spectacle. Trainer Richard Moreau had already left The Raceway at The Western Fair District before his pupil Evenin Of Pleasure set a 1:50.3 track record and took down the $115,500 Molson Pace at 36-1 Friday (May 27) at the London, ON half-miler. Winning driver Sylvain Filion said Moreau?s early departure had nothing to do with a lack of confidence in the six-year-old son of Dragon Again? Armbro Amour. ?He was here all night. He warmed up all night and he left before the race,?Filion said of Moreau, the three-time reigning Canadian Trainer of the Year. ?He often does that. I think he?s a little camera shy and he doesn?t like interviews.? The victory was the first this year for Evenin Of Pleasure in 10 starts, but walking from the winner?s circle through the tunnel that leads to the paddock, Filion said ?I knew he could compete with them because he?s a good half-miler. When he?s 100 per cent, he?s as good as anyone.? The pacer raced in five legs and the $100,000 consolation of the George Morton Levy Series at Yonkers Raceway in March and April ? finishing second in the first two legs and earning two other checks in the series. On his return to Canada, Evening Of Pleasure finished a lackluster sixth on May 14 in the $26,180 preferred at Mohawk. ?I knew he could only be better this week, because he was really flat in that race,?Filion said. ?He was kind of sick. So, Harness Racing Update | 5 | May 29, 2016 M ol son Pace conti nued and earnings of more than $525,000 for owner Gestion Blais Inc. of Montreal, QC. Blais purchased the pacer for $15,000 at the Standardbred Horse Sales Company?s 2011 yearling sale in Harrisburg, PA. It was the first Molson Pace victory for both Filion and Moreau. The two Quebec natives also teamed up to win Canada?s Driver and Trainer of the Year awards last year, respectively ? Moreau for the third straight year and Filion for the third time in his career (2012, 2013, 2015). Filion was something of an upset specialist on the card. He also teamed up with Moreau to win the first of two $53,900 Ontario Sires Stakes Gold legs for three-year-old male pacers with Print Media in 1:54.1 at 15-1. ?It?s an evening of pleasure,?Filion said laughing as he disappeared up the paddock tunnel. Claus Andersen Syl v ai n Fi l i on cel ebrated h i s f i rst M ol son Pace v i ctory. they treated him up and you have to give credit to Richard. He?s done a heck of a job with this horse.? Filion orchestrated a perfect pocket trip with Evenin Of Pleasure out of the four hole and passed front-runner Sunfire Blue Chip (Mark MacDonald) in the stretch to win by a neck. ?I just left out of there as hard as I could and crossed my fingers and was able to slide in the two-hole and that was it,? Filion said. McWicked (Randy Waples) was third, three-quarters of a length back. The fractions were :26.3, :55.2 and 1:23. The mile erased the 1:50.4 track record MacDonald set with Tigerama in the 2008 Molson Pace eliminations. Evenin Of Pleasure?s victory not only spoiled MacDonald?s attempt for a first Molson Pace in 10 attempts, it also spoiled State Treasurer?s bid to win a record fourth Molson Pace. Machtu N was third through the first half of the race, but backed through the field impacting the horses behind him, including State Treasurer, who finished sixth. Machtu N faded to last. His trainer, Nick Surick, reported Saturday that the pacer suffered a heart atrial fibrillation during the race, but his heartbeat returned to normal by the following morning. Machtu N arrived back in New Jersey around 5 pm Saturday and was bright eyed and eating well. Surick said he will qualify two weeks from Monday at Gaitway. Evenin Of Pleasure, who was third in the 2015 Molson Pace, has earned $93,601 this year with a record of 1-2-1 in 10 starts. He sports a record of 17-18-10 in 83 career starts Harness Racing Update | 6 | May 29, 2016 From th e ei gh t h ol e l i k e a M i ssl e Missle Jposted his fifth straight win by winning the $300,000 Art Rooney final Saturday at Yonkers from the far outside post. by Dave Briggs and Tom Pedulla ?I raced him last week and he was a little aggressive early, so I opted to stay in the three hole,?said Sears, who won the Rooney for the fourth time to match John Campbell?s record for Rooney victories. ?He was pretty strong and when they are moving along like they were, I was pretty confident.? Artmagic did the work up front for owner Polisseni, trainer Trond Smedshammer and driver George Brennan, but faded to fourth. Tailgunner Hanover finished second, two-and-a-quarter lengths back, followed by Yankee Artillery. Mike Lizzi M i ssl e J (Bri an Sears) w i nni ng th e $ 300,000 A rt Rooney f i nal Saturday at Yonk ers. Missle Jblasted out of the eight hole, sat third in the early going and then powered past entrymate Artmagic in the stretch to win the $300,000 Art Rooney final in 1:53 on Saturday (May 28) at Yonkers. ?I knew he?d go a good race, but you never know from the eight hole. The eight hole is a tough spot,?said Missle J?s trainer Linda Toscano. Unraced at two, Missle Jis starting to make up for it. It was the fifth straight win for the gelded son of American Ideal out of Cantor?s Daughter. Missle Jnow sports a record of 5-1-1 in eight starts this year and earnings of $188,700 for Ken Jacobs?KJStables LLC of Baldwinsville, NY and Wanda Polisseni?s Purple Haze Stables LLC of Fairport, NY. ?He?s honest and he?s still learning. He?s a little too grabby at times, but he?s figuring it out start by start,?Toscano said. ?He?s got a full stakes season ahead of him and he?s lightly raced, so we hope he will continue to improve.? Missle Jwas a $100,000 yearling purchase from the 2014 Standardbred Horse Sales Company sale in Harrisburg, PA. Jacobs said he had Missle Jnominated to the Meadowlands Pace at two, but decided not to keep the pacer eligible after Missle Jbecame sore at two and failed to make a pari-mutuel start. Though Missle Jwas not kept eligible to the Meadowlands Pace, Toscano said the pacer has ?a full stakes season ahead of him and he?s lightly raced, so we hope he will continue to improve... He?s got the speed, he?s got the desire. Now, he?s just got to learn to be versatile, basically what he did today. Get himself into position and finish.? Two races earlier on the card, Kryptos won the $100,000 Lismore final for three-year-old filly pacers. Jordan Stratton drove the daughter of Somebeachsomewhere? Summer Mystery to victory for trainer/part-owner Nikolas Drennan and his partners Joseph Davino of New Jersey and Brad Shackman of Alberta. Kryptos out-dueled Apple Bottom Jeans by a neck in 1:53.3. ?It was a pretty even field. I was hoping somebody from the outside would go just to mix it up a bit and they did. My filly showed up in the stretch,?Stratton said. It was the eighth win in nine starts for Kryptos. ?She showed a bunch of wins on the program. She?s going to turn out to be a nice filly,?Stratton said. Kryptos, a $24,000 yearling purchase at the 2014 Harrisburg yearling sale, did not make a pari-mutuel start at two, but now sports earnings just shy of $100,000. ?I didn?t know how good he was going to come back,? Jacobs said. ?I thought he was going to be good, but you just don?t know until you put a race like this together.? Missle Jwon the lone $40,000 Art Rooney elimination a week ago, but then drew the dreaded eight hole for the final. But driver Brian Sears made it look easy when he blasted into third spot off the gate. Harness Racing Update | 7 | May 29, 2016 Harness Raci ng Update harness racing history, as well. ?I gave the business up ? or I was going to ? and I was going home and these people came by and asked me to take him,?said O?Donnell, who is considered by many to be the greatest driver to ever sit in a sulky. The ?him?was a horse named Travelin Boy who came along in the early 1970s. At the time, O?Donnell was working in New England as an assistant to Jim Doherty. When Doherty couldn?t take Travelin Boy, O?Donnell jumped at the chance, despite the early prospects being anything but promising. by Dave Briggs, courtesy Ontario Racing (Editor?s Note: This item originally appeared on the Ontario Racing website in 2015 under a section called For The Love Of Racing which still adds new stories weekly. Bill O?Donnell said he was ready to give up on the business entirely at age 24 and head home to Nova Scotia when a special horse not only changed his life, but, conceivably ?He was crippled when I got him and he hadn?t raced for eight or nine months and I spent all my time, all my knowledge and whatever getting him going and he was Horse of the Year two or three years in New England.? Travelin Boy also gave O?Donnell his first drive and the first of more than 5,700 career wins in a career that landed him in the U.S. Harness Racing Hall of Fame in 1990, Canada?s Sports Hall of Fame in 1992 and the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame in 1996. O?Donnell earned nearly $100 million, won virtually all of the sport?s biggest stakes many times over and became the Harness Racing Update | 8 | May 29, 2016 Harness Raci ng Update first driver to post a $10 million year. He still holds the record for the fastest mile in harness racing history more than two decades after he drove Cambest to a 1:46.1 time trial. It all started with Travelin Boy. ?When I went on my own, it was me and (Travelin Boy) and one other horse,?said O?Donnell, who now lives in Guelph, ON and is the president of the Central Ontario Standardbred Association that represents horsepeople that race on the Woodbine Entertainment Group circuit. Travelin Boy, a son of Adios Boy out of Vermont Dream owned by Iva Gray of North Conway, NH, earned nearly $240,000 and O?Donnell was on his way to the top, rather than out of the sport. ?I had nothing until I got him,?he said. which was over a second faster than L A Delight?s 1:52.2 victory last Saturday. The Dr. Moore trainee went off at odds of 6-1. ?Our filly had a lot of speed last year and again this year, but she has a little bit of a mental type issue and it takes a lot to calm her down,?said Moore, who noted he has two caretakers looking after his filly. ?They?ve done a heck of a job with her keeping her calm. We had to walk her a lot and that of sort of thing, but she did very well and it?s certainly worth it.? A daughter of Big Jim? Go For Best, Good Will Hanover won four of seven starts last year and now has two wins in three starts as a sophomore. Moore didn?t have any instructions for Christoforou, but the race didn?t play out the way he envisioned. ?When (Christoforou) drives them once, he pretty well gets a feel for them and knows what he wants to do,?Moore said. ?I thought maybe (L A Delight) might go to the front and we may be in the two-hole is what I was thinking, but it didn?t shape up that way.? L A Delight, Caprice Hill upset in SBOA s Ontario sired sophomore fillies were the main attraction Saturday (May 28) at Mohawk Racetrack and upsets was the theme of the night. The Standardbred Breeders of Ontario Association (S.B.O.A) Stakes for Ontario sired three-year-old fillies featured award winners in both the pacing and trotting divisions. Owned by Glb Stable of Lakeview, NS, Good Will Hanover now has career earnings of $263,759. Dr. Moore noted that the S.B.O.A Stakes champion will be pointed towards the upcoming Fan Hanover stakes. Good Will Hanover paid $14.10 to win. Flowers N Songs trotted up a storm to split the favorites late and win the $174,329 S.B.O.A Filly Trot Final. O?Brien Award winner L A Delight was seeking her 13th consecutive victory in the $173,329 S.B.O.A Filly Pace Final, but Good Will Hanover stole the show. Most eyes were focused heavily on O?Brien Award winner Caprice Hill, who entered the Filly Trot final off a 1:53.1 elimination victory and was made the heavy 1-5 favorite. The Tony Alagna trainee got away fourth for driver Waples, but was almost 10 lengths behind the leader at the opening quarter. Driven by Chris Christoforou, Good Will Hanover went to the front and never looked back en route to a career-best 1:50 victory. The Dr. Ian Moore trainee posted fractions of :26.4, :55.1 and 1:22.4. Major Muscle posted a snappy :26.4 first quarter, but the lead was short-lived. Celebrity Eventsy, the other elimination winner, trotted up from third to first moving to the half for driver Sylvain Filion. L A Delight got away fourth from post four for driver Randy Waples, but was forced to come first up entering the final turn. The heavy 2-5 favorite never really got close to Good Will Hanover and had to settle for a fourth-place finish. After a :55.3 half, Waples sent Caprice Hill first up to challenge Celebrity Eventsy, who reached the third-marker in 1:24.2. Mayhem Seelster, who blasted out from the nine-hole to get away third, finished three-quarters of a length behind the winner in second, while Lay Lady Lay was third. Good Will Hanover won her elimination last week in 1:51.1, In the stretch, Caprice Hill closed in Celebrity Eventsy searching for the victory, but neither filly had nearly as much trot as Flowers N Songs. The Paul Reid trainee stayed along the pylons in mid-pack until the stretch, when driver Doug McNair found clear room and the 23-1 longshot blasted Harness Racing Update | 9 | May 29, 2016 Harness Raci ng Update through to trot a tremendous final-eighth for the victory in 1:53. Caprice Hill finished two-and-three-quarter lengths back in second, while Celebrity Eventsy was third. A daughter of Deweycheatumnhowe? Pleasure?s Song, Flowers N Songs finished second in her elimination, three-and-a-half lengths behind Celebrity Eventsy. The Robert Key homebred has been tremendous this season with six victories and five runner-up finishes from 12 starts. Unraced at two, Flowers N Songs now has career earnings of over $147,000. Her clocking of 1:53 knocked more than three-seconds off her previous career-best. A $2 win ticket on the Reid trainee returned $48.90. ? Mark McKelvie / WEG standardbred communications Darlinonthebeach sets 1:49.4 stakes record Darlinonthebeach survived a wicked :25.4 first quarter and rolled home for David Miller in a stakes record 1:49.4 in Friday?s (May 27) Adios Betty, a $161,760 Pennsylvania Sire Stakes for three-year-old filly pacers at The Meadows. I Said Diamonds, who had lowered the stakes mark to 1:50 moments before Darlinonthebeach stepped on the track, captured the other division. In the May 7 final of the Miss Pennsylvania, Darlinonthebeach was parked out in :25.2 and was out of gas late, finishing seventh. When she witnessed the brutal opening panel in the Adios Betty, trainer Nancy Johansson had the sinking feeling that history was repeating itself. ?When I saw the first quarter in :25.4, I said to the girl who takes care of her, ?Oh no, not again,??she said. ?The difference today was that David was able to back her off the second quarter, so she had a little bit left in the tank when they came at her. She raced super.? White Birch Farm?s homebred daughter of Somebeachsomewhere? Darlins Delight easily thwarted the first-over challenge of Shesasmokinlady and defeated the pocket-sitting Lispatty, an 86-1 longshot, by three-quarters of a length. Pure Country, the 1-2 favourite, rallied but could manage only show. Marty Party held the previous stakes record of 1:51.3. Johansson said Darlinonthebeach, who now boasts over $320,000 in career earnings, would be pointed to the Fan Hanover. I Said Diamonds also endured a rough start when, as the 1-5 favorite, she was looped while on the outside and finally made the point in :26.1 ?I was just waiting for the dust to settle,?said winning driver Jim Pantaleano. ?I saw the outside horses leaving really hard, and I did not want to get into a speed duel. She was really relaxed on the lead, which obviously is a good attribute in a racehorse.? I Said Diamonds defeated Call Me Queen Be by one-and-a-quarter lengths, with Newborn Sassy third. Matias Ruiz conditions the daughter of Well Said? Silksndiamonds, who extended her lifetime bankroll over $285,000, for Little Bapa LLC. $80,000 PA Stallion Series ? Three-Year-Old Filly Pacers In Friday?s co-feature, Keystone Riptide matched the stakes record of 1:52, established in 2013 by Icommandmyspirit. Also taking $20,000 splits were Albany Girl, Terror At Night and Corona Again. Brett Miller enjoyed a stakes double with Albany Girl and Terror Again. Keystone Riptide quarter-poled to the lead and scored handily for David Miller, trainer Nikolas Drennan and owners Joseph Davino, Patrick O?Brien and Brad Shackman. Nips Beach Girl was three lengths back in second while End To End Hanover closed well for third. ?Last week, she got loose late, and she was coming really hard on the end of it,?said David Miller of the daughter of Somebeachsomewhere? Keystone Rebecca. ?I thought tonight would be a good time to put her back on the lead. She?s a nice filly, a borderline sires stakes type.? Terror At Night brushed to the front before the quarter and widened her lead from there, scoring her first stakes win of the season in a career-fastest 1:52.2. Drag N Sand was second, six and three-quarter lengths in arrears, while Triple Charm completed the ticket. ?I didn?t think she was up to stakes company until now,? said Les Givens, who conditions the daughter of Western Terror-Enhance The Night ? a $20,000 yearling acquisition ? for Nanticoke Racing, Edward Maas III and Arlene Paisley. ?Down the road, who knows? I want to keep her happy.? Corona Again used an extended uncovered move to open up a daylight lead for Tim Tetrick, trainer Douglas Lewis and owner LA Express Stable. The daughter of Dragon Again-Exotic Location defeated Hooves On First by five and a quarter lengths in 1:53. Marty Party Two completed the ticket. Harness Racing Update | 10 | May 29, 2016 Harness Raci ng Update ?She?s a great big, growthy filly,?Tetrick said. ?She has a lot to learn yet. She?s still like a little kid out there ? looks at everything, tries to jump shadows. She has a lot of talent, but she has to get her mind on right.? ? The Meadows M ichael?s V ictory shocks ?Rocks? at Big M Something strange happened to 1-9 favorite Boston Red Rocks in Saturday (May 28) night?s second leg of the New Jersey Sire Stakes (NJSS) for three-year-old colt and gelding pacers at the Meadowlands: Victory. More specifically, Michael?s Victory. Sent off at 32-1 in the field of five, Michael?s Victory worked out a perfect pocket trip and scored by a half-length over the pace-setting Katies Rocker in a lifetime-best 1:49.1. Boston Red Rocks was third, followed by Don?tcallmefrancis and Ideal Rocky. All The Cookies was scratched. Things could not have gone worse for the early Meadowlands Pace favorite. As Boston Red Rocks was making his way around the first turn, 9-2 second choice Ideal Rocky broke stride right in front of him, forcing him to take back. Boston Red Rocks caught the top pair by the half, and had every chance in the stretch, but was outsprinted to the wire. Michael?s Victory paid $66.80 for driver Scott Zeron, trainer Mark Silva and owner Jeffrey Snyder. In the second leg of the NJSS for sophomore filly pacers Blue Moon Stride was dominant for a second straight week. The Mark Harder trainee grabbed the top at the three-eighths and sailed down the road for driver Andrew McCarthy, winning by two-and-three-quarter lengths in a lifetime-best 1:50.2 as the 1-9 public choice ($2.20) for owners Emilio and Maria Rosati. Show Time Hill was second with JK Fannie third. Non Stick remains undefeated in V ernon NYSS Åke Svanstedt, Inc. and Little E, LLC's Non Stick ($2.70) remains undefeated in eight career starts after a comfortable two-length win in her $40,600 New York Sire Stakes division on Saturday (May 28) evening at Vernon Downs. Mark MacDonald wasted no time with the three-year-old Lucky Chucky? Meucci Madness filly, working clear of Goosebump Hanover (Chris Lems) before exiting the straight. Non Stick was uncontested through splits of :28, :57.2, and 1:26, working clear of her seven foes on the far turn. At head-stretch, Goosebump Hanover vacated the pocket to give chase, but Non Stick maintained her clear lead throughout under just mild encouragement for a 1:55 triumph. Earn Your Wings (Charlie Norris) circled from the rear of the main group to take second, while Dizzy Broad (Jim Morrill, Jr.) saved third off her cozy tracking trip. Goosebump Hanover lacked any late burst from the pocket, finishing fourth. Svanstedt trains Non Stick, who has amassed $226,532 thus far in career earnings. Mario Mazza's Stick Of Butter ($7.20) prevailed in her Sire Stakes division off an extended first-over bid, dueling clear of pacesetter Straight A Student for a 1:54.3 win. Trainer Francisco del Cid drove the Lucky Chucky filly. Fair Winds Farm, Inc.'s Open Access ($33.80) also found the winner's enclosure, vaulting off cover and collaring Fad Finance and Swinging Royalty for a last-to-first 1:54.1 score. Three divisions of $20,000 Indiana Sires Stakes eliminations for three-year-old pacing colts and geldings highlighted the 14-race card at Hoosier Park Racing & Casino on Saturday (May 28) and the sophomore colts opened their series in impressive fashion. Each of the divisional winners from the three Indiana Sires Stakes eliminations earned a spot in the first of five $75,000 Indiana Sires Stakes final for three-year-old pacing colts and geldings slated for June 4 at Hoosier Park. The 2016 Indiana Sires Stakes program will feature five legs throughout the season, and from each leg, the top 20 horses will return to compete in a final and consolation. The stakes program will culminate with the top ten horses from each of the previous finals returning to compete in a $200,000 Super Final on Oct. 15 at Hoosier Park. Matrix of Luck, the Hoosier state?s two-year-old pacing colt champion, returned to his winning ways to score in 1:50.3, the fastest division of the evening. With Mike Peterson at the lines, Matrix of Luck protected his rail position and was sent away from the gate firing through an opening panel in :27. Mgsperkg Bluegrass and Tyler Smith grabbed a pocket seat while Downthehighwy and Jason Dillander were next in line third. Matrix of Luck went uncontested through splits of :55.1 and 1:23.1 but saved his best for last. As the field turned for home, Uncmprmising Z Tam and LeWayne Miller were the first to commit to the outer flow and taking aim at the leader. Mgsperkg Bluegrass tipped from the pocket but Matrix of Luck was too strong. Using a :27.2 final quarter, Matrix of Luck finished four lengths to the good over Mgsperkg Bluegrass and Uncmprmsing Z Tam. ? Emily Gaskin / Hoosier Park publicist Father of Quick Hitch dead at 95 Standardbred Canada reports that horseman Dr. Gordon Gilbertson, DVM, the creator of the ?Quick Hitch?has passed away at the age of 95. Gordon Earle Gilbertson, who was also on this year?s Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame ballot, passed peacefully at the Spruce Lodge in Stratford, ON on Monday (May 9). Owned by Brian Carsey, John McGill, and Debbie Cullipher, Matrix of Luck scored the first win of his three-year-old season from two starts and eighth lifetime win. Trained by Roger Cullipher, the son of Rockin Image? My Taylor?s Maid also established a new lifetime mark with the win. Gilbertson, who was an owner, trainer and driver, was born in Hagersville, ON on June 3, 1920, the son of the late Gordon Reid Gilbertson and the former Elsie Heibner. He graduated Doctor of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Guelph in 1944. In the next division, Bourbon Chase recorded his first stakes victory to remain perfect in three starts this season, scoring tonight in 1:51.2. Driven and trained by Dan Shetler, Bourbon Chase made his game winning move down the backside and used a :27.2 final quarter to secure the win over Shocking Image and Trace Tetrick. Dr. Gilbertson revolutionized an aspect of the standardbred racing industry when he invented the Quick Hitch. He began to act on a ?dream?in the late 1970s by using his extensive experience of both treating horses as a veterinarian, and his hands-on experience in training and driving harness horses to fuel his idea. The homebred son of Palone Ranger? Stonebridge Beauty was unraced at two, but has won all three of his lifetime outings at three. Owned by Dan Shelter and Kristin Shetler, Bourbon Chase has now earned $20,500 lifetime. In 1980, Dr. Gilbertson secured Canadian and U.S. patents on his new Quick Hitch, which would eventually be called ?Rondeau Quick Hitch,?as a reference to the area where he lived in Kent County, ON. Ville Valo and Ricky Macomber Jr. turned in a gritty, front-running effort to take the third split of the stakes action in 1:51.2. It was the second consecutive victory for the Ron Burke trainee who also established a new lifetime mark with the win. ? Standardbred Canada Owned by Burke Racing Stable, Weaver Bruscemi, and P. Collura, Ville Valo has now won three of seven seasonal Harness Racing Update | 12 | May 29, 2016 Harness Raci ng Update Loving Betfair Last week, Betfair launched exchange wagering on horse racing in New Jersey. Apparently, this is something that is very popular in Europe but fairly unknown here. The Meadowlands is one of the tracks, and the only harness track, that is available for this new type of betting option. I am surprised I have not seen any advertising about this. I believe this may be the future of wagering on horse racing. Low handles have made betting at most tracks undesirable. I don't know how many times I placed a wager on a 2-1 shot at Harrahs with seconds to post only to see the final odds drop to 1-5. Betfair offers fixed price wagering. I have read that Betfair is giving a percentage back to the hosting tracks. I was happy to see Jeff Gural has made an agreement with Betfair to allow them to carry the Meadowlands. So far, the pools have been small, but I am not sure how anyone would even know that the site is operational at this point. If you have not done so take a look at the site. To me, this is the best thing to happen to racing in many years. ? Ken Abramowitz / Jobstown, NJ Betting Chester Did John Campbell's grandmother really give him half of Argyel Chester as an 11th birthday present? (Editor?s note: Yes, Campbell has confirmed it on more than one occasion.) Is there any other reader who remembers betting on Argyel Chester? I did it at Windsor Raceway a long, long time ago. ?
