The "Pennsylvania Marketing Bulletin" has been serving the forest products industry since 1948. Advertising in the "Bulletin" is limited to
subscribers. Ads, which must be submitted via fax, mail or email, must be received by the 18th of each month in order to advertise in the
following month‟s publication. If the 18th falls on a weekend or holiday, the deadline will be the previous workday. Items received after the
deadline or not published because of lack of space will be published the following month. Repeat ads must be resubmitted to the PFPA
office every month for the duration of the ad by notifying the staff via phone, fax, mail or email. Blind ads can be run upon request.
Responses to blind ads in the "Marketing Bulletin" should contain the issue and item numbers. PFPA reserves the right to reject or reword
items submitted and assumes no responsibility for listings. Printed subscription rates are $48 for one year, $84 for two years, $108 for

State Imposes Quarantine of Bucks County…..State Bans Walnut Importation from Infected States
The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture has announced that Thousand Cankers Black Walnut Disease has been found in
Plumstead Township, Bucks County, PA.
As a result of this find, the state Department of Agriculture has announced a quarantine of Buck County, which prohibits the movement
outside of the quarantine area of the following regulated materials:
 All black walnut nursery stock; logs and tree parts; green lumber; and walnut chips
 All hardwood firewood;
 All hardwood chips and mulch;
KD black walnut lumber is exempt from the quarantine only if it is also bark-free and square-edged. (Finished black walnut products and
nuts are also exempt). The state Department of Agriculture will provide compliance agreements or permits to facilities allowing the
movement outside of the quarantine area of regulated materials properly processed and disease free. Presently, compliance
agreements will not be available as a result of processing of chips or mulch. Transport of walnut lumber, sawdust and chips through the
quarantine area (such as on I-95 or I-276) is allowed with permit or with waybill, provided the truck is covered and does not
unnecessarily stop. Violations of the quarantine are subject to civil and criminal penalty.
Exterior Quarantine Imposed
The state Department of Agriculture is also imposing an exterior quarantine which protects the rest of the state‟s black walnut resource
by prohibiting the importation of the regulated materials from states with Thousand Cankers Black Walnut Disease (list of states in box
below). Regulated materials can come into PA from these states only with pre-approval from the PA Department of Agriculture.
A number of other eastern and central U.S. states already have similar exterior quarantines, which will now apply to these walnut
products from PA – these states include MO, KS, MI, NE, OK, IN, MN, NC, WI and VA.

About Thousand Cankers Black Walnut Disease
Thousand Cankers Black Walnut Disease is a pest complex created by the combined activity of the walnut twig beetle (Pityophthorus
juglandis) and a fungus (Geosmithia morbida). The disease attacks only black walnut (Juglans nigra). Infection is nearly always fatal to
the tree. Where the insect has been detected in the western U.S., the majority of black walnut has since died. There is currently no
effective control for the disease on a landscape basis.
Trees can be infected for years without visible traces. Once visible symptoms are detected, including yellowing foliage, branch
mortality, bark discoloration and concentration of beetle boles, tree mortality usually occurs within a few years.
Diseased wood remains infectious for at least three years after trees are cut. The beetles are capable of surviving on small pieces of
wood with bark and can survive normal chipping. This makes the disease a high risk for artificial human transport.
Thousand Cankers Walnut Disease is prevalent in the western U.S (AZ, CA, CO, ID, OR, UT, WA). In addition to our state, the disease
has been found in the eastern U.S near Knoxville, TN in 2010 and near Richmond, VA in August 2011.
