How to use these task cards:
Here are 36 task cards to help your students practice identifying the 8 common types of
figurative language: simile, metaphor, oxymoron, personification, alliteration, onomatopoeia,
hyperbole and idioms. The task cards are supplementary and should be used once your
students have been presented to figurative language.
Task cards can be used in following ways:
• Give each student a card and have him/ her read it and discuss the answer.
• These cards can be used for oral activities in big or small groups.
• You can also use this as individually written homework or seatwork.
• Use the recording sheets to document the child’s answers. Another option
is to record their answers on their notebook.

It was a sunny, sluggish, super Saturday
when Jim and his sister Kathy decided to go
to the beach with their parents. They packed
their swimming gear and some picnic food
and took a short drive to the beach to enjoy
a day of fun!
My birthday is coming up this week and I’m
having a party. I’m having the party at the
zoo and my mom is as busy as a bee with
preparations. All of my friends are invited to
this boisterous, beautiful, birthday bash. I’m
so excited!

We went hiking and camping the other day.
It was such a long but fun walk back to the
campsite. My friends and I were so hungry
we could eat a mountain of pancakes.
Fortunately, we brought a lot of campfire
food.
I aced my Math test and saw my name
posted on the top ten list. That was
awesome! I feel on top of the world.

Winter is coming and many people feel
under the weather. Take necessary
precautions and stay warm. Remember to
always wash your hands to keep the germs
away.
The heavens wept for the children who died.
People held hands and prayed for them and
for each other.

we thought all hope was lost, the rooster
announced the coming of a bright new day.

downside was when the ball fell on my head
and I saw stars dancing in front of me. Good
thing I still caught it!
