State-of-the-Art: Media Archive Solution
AA Media Group implements Media Archive Solution
Unique connection between a Media Backbone and DataDirect Networks
storage solutions.
The current views on ideal storage-architectures in the media
industry are changing. Previously storage infrastructure
required a relatively high budget compared to the rest of the
production infrastructure, resulting in different types of storage
in numerous production areas. Storage environments consist of
multiple storage islands based on multiple storage techniques.
From a storage philosophy, the tendency is to bring those islands
all together under a single architecture
and
management.
This
will cause a reduction of costs for
scalability and maintainability but
will also save overall storage costs.
The solution
The solution consists of multiple main
storage environments, divided by the
tier-level they have to support. A high
speed production storage will act as
a tier 1, a deep archive as a tier 2
and an additional (off-site) disaster
recovery archive as tier 3. The current storage environment, for instance LTO, can also be integrated in
this environment.
In order to access both the content
and the functionality of the storage
array, a Media Backbone system is
provided. This latter system will have
connections to all storages environments and will manage all file movement and metadata between them.
Upon an archive trigger (based on
rules or manual entry), files will be
transferred from main storage (tier
1) to archive storage (tier 2). When a
file is requested from the archive storage, the media backbone will transfer a copy of it to the main storage.
The media backbone and the multiple archive storage environments
are connected via RESTful APIs with
which all movement of content can be
controlled and monitored.
The Tier-1 storage environment, being
the main storage, consists of a GridScaler Storage Array from DDN. This highspeed storage acts as the main entry/
exit for clients, such as editing, ingest
and play-out.
The second storage, or archive storage,
will be a WOS6000 Object Storage Cluster, acting as an extremely scalable and
versatile tier 2 storage solution.
Part of the main storage array is the file
server functionality, handling all the requests from the clients, whether this is
done via an OS mount (NFS/CIFS/SMB)
or a separate file transfer protocol (FTP/
SFTP).
The WOS6000 cluster offers a built-in
resilience solution where the content is
duplicated on the storage in such a way
that, when a disc fails, there is always a
way to rebuild the lost content.
The archive storage solution also offers

About AA Media Group
AA Media Group specializes in delivering solutions to broadcasters and
media owners. This will help them
to improve and implement file based
workflows based on best-of-breed
media technology. Fundamental
guidelines within the solutions: reduce
costs, deploy standard IT technologies,
work more efficiently and new ways of
monetizing content.

an optional automatic backup functionality, which can be used to replicate the data to a second WOS6000
cluster for on-site or off-site disaster recovery. As another option,
the media backbone can be used to
integrate a separate tape library, storing all content that is sent to the archive storage cluster as a deep archive
repository. This way multiple, solid
data-loss, structures can be achieved.

Why AA Media Group?
AA Media Group is the knowledge
and implementation parther of both
DDN and media backbones. We are
able to implement the Media
Archive storage environment in the
West-European region. Other
potential customers around the globe
can order the solution at their own
familiar DDN or media backbone
supplier in their own country or
region. AA Media Group will be able
to support that particular supplier
with our knowledge of primarily
the Media Backbone, but also our
knowledge of the overall solution. AA
Media Group will act as a knowledge
partner with our broadcast roots and
expertise in digital workflows, media
asset management and media
archives environments.
Upon request we can also help local
integrators with the implementation.
