SENIOR CITIZENS
Hello everyone, hope all is well with
you all. The Seniors and Pensioners.
went to Joondalup last week on the
train from Mandurah. We had a lovely

around. There are lots and lots of
shops. We would like to thank Lena &
Paul Anzellino for the use of their Bus,
and thank Don the driver who took us
to Mandurah, many thanks. NOTICE
TO ALL MEMBERS. It is our A.G.M

Charity
Welcome to Mona
who is over again
from New Zealand
for a holiday with her
daughter in
Mandurah. We love to see and hear
what she has been up to since we last
saw her. She is always busily
occupied making little cottages to
cover tissue boxes. Nola is busy
crocheting rugs and other baby items
for the Friends of Peel Hospital shop.
Barbara is busy also knitting baby
items as they are very low on baby
stock to sell in the shop. Margaret
has been stuffing and putting features
on the teddies/dolls that my Mum
knitted. I am back for our get together
each fortnight and also to catch up
with Waroona friends. I have settled
into my new home and all the boxes
are unpacked. I have made many
trips to the Op Shop here in Waroona
as well as Gosnells as I have had to
“de-clutter” on a massive scale!
Dates for July are 9th and 23rd and
August 6th.
Thanking you Coral Culling.

NEW MONTHLY FEATURE
Waroona's Hard Working Heroes By Bill Calcott
A new series of Waroona stand-out-in-the-crowd personalities, who
deserve to be called a Waroona Hard Working Hero
This Month: Kathryn O'Brien
Waroona nurse nominated for age
care excellence.
MEDIA RELEASE
Monday, 24 October 2005
Member for Canning Don Randall
attended the 2005 Ministers Awards
for Excellence in Aged Care in
Canberra this month, supporting local
nominee Ms Kathryn O’Brien. Based
at Pam Corker House in Waroona, Ms
O’Brien made the trip to Canberra as
one of four carers nominated under
the Professional Development award.
Although she did not take home the
prize, Ms O’Brien was delighted to be
nominated, receiving a certificate to
commemorate the occasion. “Nurses,
carers and other staff are the
backbone of the aged care sector,”
said Mr Randall. These dedicated
workers provide the quality care,
comfort and respect that older
Australians in care need and deserve
– the least we can do for people who
have helped shape our nation.
Kathryn O’Brien has worked in aged
care at Pam Corker House since
1987, working her way up from a
cleaner to laundry staff member and
cook. In 2001, she completed her
Certificate III in Aged Care, becoming
an assistant supervisor, and in 2002
enrolled in TAFE and successfully
completed a bridging course into the
Nursing Education Program. Ms
O’Brien became an Enrolled Nurse in
2004 and in 2005 she commenced
training as a Registered Nurse. She
has completed all courses in her
own time without financial
assistance. She is now a senior staff
member and mentors staff from all
areas of the organisation. She plays
an integral role in planning,
implementing and evaluating all care
given at Pam Corker House. Today,
Kathryn is still 'hard at work' at Pam
Corker House and recently received
an award for 28 years continuous
service at the Pam Corker facility.
The O'Brien family came to Waroona
in the 1900's, buying land and farming
where the Waroona Dam, now exists.
O'Brien's have 5 generations, past
and present, living and working in
Waroona.

WAROONA PENSIONERS SOCIAL CLUB
At our last meeting the proposed
outing to Dwellingup was discussed
and the date set for Wednesday 15th
July. We will be leaving the Seniors
Hall at 9:30am For our first stop we
will be going to the winery for wine
tasting and morning tea then on to the
Visitors Centre for a browse through
the many local arts and crafts they
have for sale. Our lunch stop will be
the Blue Wren Café where we will
have a roast and a sweet lunch.
After the lunch we had planned to go
to the marron farm but unfortunately
the owners are away for the whole of
July so that can’t take place. At the
time of writing I don’t know if we will be
able to find something to take the place
of the marron farm visit but hopefully
we will. It should be a good day out so
make sure you put your name down if
you want to go. The July issue of the
Drakesbrook Despatch doesn’t come
out until after our meeting which was
the AGM. Hopefully all the positions
will have been filled. I remind all
members this is YOUR club and as a
member you should do your best to
attend meetings. That is the only
way you can air your views or make
suggestions. Don’t forget to support
our monthly Friday bingo. It is held
on the last Friday of the month, eyes
down at 1.30 p.m. at the Senior
Citizens Hall. It is not just for Club
members but is open to anyone over
the age of 18. It is money raised
from this bingo that helps fund our
outings.

gardening jobs for people who were in
need of some help.
Active and Creative – Exploring
Churches. Coral attended several
Christian Denominations’ services
and also researched the similarities
and different styles of worship. She
also did research by reading several
books and other resource material.
Tomorrow’s World – Coral learned
to play the piano.
History and Heritage – Coral studied
the History of Transport. She focused
on the Transport industry in Australia
and the changes and developments
over the years.
People and Nations – Coral
undertook photography by learning
the art of best use of her camera and
presented a portfolio of her
photographs.
The challenges had to be undertaken
for 12 months. Coral thanks her
assessors, Lynda, Alice, Delys, John
and Kelly. She also says “this is my

Western Front Trip 2016 update
Quiet, quiet,
quiet...is the
only way to
describe June.
With very little on our fundraising
calendar during the winter months
please think of us if any jobs big or
small come your way. Now in saying
that an amazing opportunity came our
way, courtesy of Tom Busher at Alcoa
Wagerup. Alcoa sponsored a
fundraising luncheon with Dane Swan
and Glen Jakovich which was held on
the 17th of June at Bendigo Stadium.
Having never attended anything like
this I wasn’t sure what to expect but
can happily report back that it was
excellent! Jakovich was a great MC
and Dane was an honest and open
speaker who had the room laughing.
Being a huge Jako supporter I knew
who he was, but to be honest I had to
Google Dane Swan. He did not
disappoint! His down to earth nature
and friendliness to everyone in the
room will be remembered for a while
to come. We had a small number of
Waroona locals support the lunch and
a big thank you is needed. Peter and
Lyndie Ward, John and Annette
Mason, Julie Wilson, Agnes Gardiner
and Terri Callister. At this point we are
not sure how much was raised
through ticket sales, raffle sales or the
auction but will report the amount as
soon as we know. The 1 day raffle
resulted in a large number of tickets
being sold in the hours leading up to
the lunch with Matt Thomas winning
the personally signed by Dane Swan
Collingwood Jumper. Overall an
enjoyable and successful fundraising
day for the students. Thank you Tom!
A number of donations have come in
this month;

·

·
Mr Don Randall
A HUGE thank you to you all! Without
the generosity of our community this
lifetime opportunity for these children
would not be possible.
Up and coming events for our
fundraising include a cash raffle with
the 1st prize being $1000. 2nd prize is
$500 and 3rd is a trailer load of wood.
Tickets will be sold from the 30th of
June and drawn on the 26th of
September. All tickets are $20 each
and availability is limited to 200. You
can organise your ticket by emailing
me [email protected] or
seeing someone on the fundraising
committee. Paula Birch, Misti Fazel,
Mel Barber, Mel Janssen, Peter
Reynolds, Tanya Henwood, Tarnia
Bonnett, Vicki Lorroway, Sharon
Cools or Tracy Johnson will all have
tickets to sell. A fantastic opportunity
to get some extra cash just before the
school holidays or Christmas!
Thank you and have an awesome

Mavis Quartermaine - 100Years Young
Mavis was born in Katanning on 8th
July 1915 to parents Wallace and
Susan Kate (Williams.) She is the
eldest of their five children. She
married Lloyd Quartermaine who was
also born in Katanning, in April 1939.
Jill was their firstborn in April 1942 but
sadly died in December of the same
year. Second daughter, Cheryl was
born in April 1949, followed by the
adoption of 8 month old Ian in 1955.
Daughter Robyn was a 'surprise
packet' being born in 1959. After
Lloyd left the RAAF he started a
business as a watchmaker and
jeweller and Mavis was his 'right hand
woman.' She ran the gift shop,
managed the staff and did all the
book-work in addition to caring for
aging parents and her own family.
The business was successful for
around 3 decades when they finally
sold out and retired to Busselton.
They enjoyed life in Busselton for
around 10 years, moving to Mandurah
in 1986 to be closer to family after
Lloyd had a massive heart attack.
They were involved with the Leslie
Street Leisure Centre in Mandurah,
with Lloyd being president and Mavis
being secretary for many years. After
Lloyd's death in 1995, Mavis remained
in her own home for the next 18 years,
being fiercely independent, doing all
her own housework and gardening,
(which was her passion), right up until
she had the misfortune to fall and break
a hip just a few weeks before her 98th
birthday. Mavis was in hospital for
three months doing rehab on a broken
hip. This robbed her of her
independence and resulted in her
having to go into care in Mandurah
initially (where she broke her other
hip!), before transferring to Quambie
Park nearer to family. Mavis has an
ever increasing number of
grandchildren and great grandchildren
with twin great grand-daughters due
about the same time as her 100th
birthday celebrations. During Mavis’s
long life she has faced many
challenges and hardships along the
way; like many of her generation but
she has met them head-on and
become stronger because of them.
Her family is very proud of her.
SOUTH WEST GROUP RURAL AMBASSADOR AWARD FOR WAROONA
Members of the Waroona Agricultural
Society, along with their nominee for
the Rural Ambassador Award “Kirstin
Waller” and her family attended the
judging for the South West Group Rural
Ambassador Award at a luncheon held
in Donnybrook on Saturday 20th June
2015. Kirstin is a local girl who
attended primary school in Waroona
and currently works as a medical
receptionist in Pinjarra. With experience
and qualifications in Agriculture,
Business, Human Resources and
Management, Kirstin was an ideal
candidate to represent the Waroona
Agricultural Society at this year’s
award. The Waroona Agricultural
Society is extremely proud to
announce that Kirstin was the winner
of the South West Group Rural
Ambassador award with Hayden
Harries representing the Upper
Blackwood Show Society a worthy
runner-up. Kirstin was an extremely
worthy recipient and represented the
society well in all aspects of judging.

Sub Centre News
How time flies! July
already and brings
the sub centre closer
to
the
Annual
General Meeting that is held in August.
This is your chance to come on board
and have your say as to the future
direction of your ambulance service.
Applications for positions on the Sub
Centre Committee are more than
welcome from members of the
community. If you are interested in
joining us, please see Carol in the
office on Tuesdays or Thursdays
between 9am – 12:30pm
or 1:00pm – 3:00pm.
Sneak Preview – Waroona Sub
Centre in conjunction with Dawesville
Depot are currently in the planning
process to hold a mass casualty
simulated training exercise in Waroona
at the end of September. I’m not going
to give away the details but needless
to say it is going to be huge. The
exercise will be advertised and
everyone is more than welcome to
come and watch. It will be an awesome
opportunity for you to see all of our
emergency services in action together
and will provide a little added pressure
for our teams in regards to operating
under crowd conditions. This will be a
valuable learning experience for all
emergency service in attendance and
will give some of our newer officers’
exposure to a mass casualty situation.
We are aiming to have a sausage sizzle
afterwards so that members of the public
can socialise with our officers and answer
any questions you may have. So keep a
lookout for further details.
Log Fence Pony Club – Andy, Tami,
Lynda and I spent some rather wet but
enjoyable time over the weekend at Log
Fence’s ODE. We would like to thank the
riders who didn’t fall off and for those who
did fall, thank you for not hurting
yourselves! It makes our weekend so
much more pleasant. Thanks to Mel
Jenkins and crew for looking after us so
well and Jenny in the canteen for keeping
us fed and watered (pardon the horsey
pun). This year was my tenth year and the
Log Fence is my most favourite event to
attend. Great people, fantastic food and
awesome action!
Please Don’t
Drink and Drive
– This paragraph states my opinion only
and does not in any way represent the
view of St John Ambulance. One of the
most frustrating jobs I go to is motor
vehicle accidents that involve drink
driving. With all the warnings in the media
it seems that people just don’t get it. For
every action there are consequences and
in some instances those consequences
are substantial not just for the victims or
their families but also for the emergency
service workers that attend these
incidents. Please make educated
decisions so that the Police don’t have
to notify your loved ones, ambulance
crews don’t have to fight to save your
life or those that may have been
involved and fire crews don’t have to
use the jaws of life to cut you or others
out of vehicles. Stay safe – don’t drink
and drive!

Waroona Playgroup News
Well things
are
certainly
quieting
down now
that winter
is setting in.
Brrrr! at this
time of
year, with
the colder
weather
brings
horribly
persistent
cold and flu bugs. To all of our little
friends at home unwell with the winter
bugs, please take the time to stay
warm, rest and recover so you can
come back to play at playgroup again
soon. A home-cooked hearty chicken
noodle soup or a veggie risotto may
be all that is needed to warm those
tummies and help keep the nasties
away. It may be cold outside, but the
inside of playgroup certainly feels a
little warmer (and louder!) with the
introduction of some fabulous new
instruments, a colourful new story-time
mat and some big books to enjoy. The
children are absolutely loving the
introduction of story-time towards the end
of the session now... Which also gives
mums and dads a sneaky opportunity for
a quick pack-up before home time!
The new books and instruments were
purchased using our Music Grant funds
received from the Foundation for
Royalties and Regional Renewal. Check
out these photos from our recent fire
truck visit! Fireman Peter and Fireman
Brad from Waroona Volunteer Bush Fire
Brigade paid Playgroup a visit recently.
Children got to play with the fire hoses,
climb up on the back of the truck as well
as watch a jaws of life demonstration. A
big thank you to Brad and Peter! We'd
like to remind our members that many
committee positions still remain vacant in
2015. Committee positions are voluntary
and unfortunately without a full team, we
can only do our very best to keep
Playgroup running at full capacity whilst
still organising a fun and creative
program for the year... But we'd love your
help! You don't need to be professionally
minded - a fun,
positive and
motivated attitude
is all that is
required. If you are
interested in joining the Playgroup
committee, please speak to one of us.
Well that brings us to the end of term
2. Playgroup will be open again for
Term 3 on Monday 20th July at 9am.
Until then, have a wonderful school
holiday break, stay warm and we look
forward to seeing some more new
faces back again in July.

Really Really Free Market
If you haven't heard of these yet, it’s a bit like a farmers
market and a bit like a garage sale - except everything is
FREE. June's market didn't have a HUGE turnout, but was
pretty great all the same. There food department had hot
pumpkin soup, bread & butter, muffins, pikelets, biscuits
and orange wedges and of course tea and coffee. If you
have a smashing cake or biscuit recipe, we'd love to see it
sometime. The produce and garden dept. had quite a good
selection this month with two kinds of lemons, oranges and
chillies for eating - and Jerusalem artichokes, tagasaste
tree seedlings and aloe vera plants for planting! What do
you have in YOUR garden that you might be able to share
next month? Of course we had the usual abundance of
clothes, books and miscellaneous - including two juicers
and two coffee machines! A highlight was a woman called
Stella - it was her first ever Free Market and she outfitted
two kids for winter - for free! We love to hear about stuff like
that. It's a big part of why we are so committed to keeping
these markets running. We had a couple of other newcomers too and I really love it when we get to say, "No really,
it's okay - you don't have to pay anything. It's all free!" Also
big thank you to Kate who stayed afterwards to help pack
up the leftover stuff. With so few volunteers to do this, an
extra hand or two makes a big difference and we really appreciated your time and your help so thank you very much.
A few more volunteers would be very welcome. Get in
touch please! There were a few children around taking advantage of the "Kid's Corner" with blocks and colouring-in
sheets, and a "community jigsaw" for those so inclined. 3rd
Saturday of each month. 1pm - 3pm. in the Memorial Hall.

CONSUMERPROTECTIONCOLUMN With Consumer Protection SW Regional Coordinator Debbie Butler
Taxing calls are not the ATO
At the end of the financial year,
reports of people receiving telephone
calls or emails from scammers
impersonating staff from the
Australian Taxation Office (ATO)
increase sharply. In May 2015
Consumer Protection received 300
calls about ATO scams – that's a big
jump compared to a total of 145 calls
for the four months January-April
2015. The latest common tactic
involves phone scammers leaving an
abrupt message warning the recipient
that there is a criminal case against
them for tax evasion/fraud and urging
them to contact the ATO immediately,
using the number provided, or face
legal consequences. Disturbingly we
have had reports that nursing home
residents are among those receiving
these calls.The scammers usually
leave a telephone number that begins
with an Australian prefix such as 02 in
an attempt to add credibility to their
claims. They do this using technology
known as Voice over Internet Protocol
(VoIP) which redirects the call back to
them overseas. If you ever get a call
from a government or law
enforcement agency, ask for the
name and number of the caller and
say you will return the call. Better still,
tell them to put it in writing as they
should have your full name and
address if they are who they say they
are. Then spend some time finding
the agency’s known and advertised
phone number – for example the
ATO’s switchboard is 13 28 69 – to
call and verify if that agency truly
initiated the call. This could save you
hundreds or thousands of dollars and
prevent you from becoming a statistic!
Anyone who engages with scammers
will be asked to pay fees of some sort;
usually by a hard-to-trace method
such as wire transfer, electronic
voucher or pre paid card. The
scammers may seek a direct bank
transfer and in those cases they will
either be using accounts opened with
stolen identities or a money mule who
thinks the money is being put into
their account for another reason. That
mule could be a romance fraud victim
or think they work for a mystery
shopping organisation and may
unknowingly launder the money by
transferring it to the scammers.
Remember government or law
enforcement agencies will NOT get
you to pay them by:
·
wire transfer e.g. Western
Union or Moneygram;
·
electronic voucher such as
Ukash;
·
prepay card at the post office
e.g. Loan&Go; or
·
bank transfer using account
numbers given out-of-the-blue over
the phone.
The ATO want us to highlight that
they would never contact people in an
aggressive and demanding way and
certainly wouldn’t threaten jail or
arrest if you couldn’t pay when
contacted. Generally the ATO would
send an SMS (text message) and/or
letter to remind people that payment
was due and they would call to
discuss payment of the outstanding
debt if they didn’t get a response.

The Chookyard Farmer
Pleased to report again that the
Chookyard Farmer again had success
at the Young Bird Show conducted by
Harvey Poultry Club a couple of
weeks ago. I delivered my birds at
7.00pm on a Saturday night and
kindly received by Rona Manns to
allow me to combine two loves of
“Chickens and Waroona Football
Club”. A special thankyou to Laurie
Snell who returned the chickens back
to Waroona at Chookyard Hotel. They
loved a feed for a job well done.
Champions were Lacey a Wynadotte
Bantam with beautiful colouring and
mohawk a young Arauncana male
cockerel who has Lavender
arauncana parents but thrown back to
his grandparents a blue arauncana.
Three Gold Laced Wynadottes
managed a second prize and
Dalmation an Ancona followed up his
first prize from the Harvey Show with
a second prize. “Buffy” who scored
second prize at the Harvey Show was
withdrawn as she was off colour and
stressed, being separated from other
chickens. She has since made a full
recovery. The only non-place getter
was Mandy a beautiful Silver Laced
young hen which surprised me as I
thought she was our best chance but
with 230 opposition birds the
competition is tough. Intend entering a
few chickens in the Open Bird Show
on July 12th as local football has a
bye for the Annual Country
Championships. Improvements have
continued in the chookyard hotel and
after the heavy rain two weeks ago
removed a few layers of mud and
replaced it with wood chip that is
about six years old. They love
scratching and digging for the pat of
gold and having a dirt bath. Sad to
report that a resident in Thatcher
street lost 11 chooks and another in
Butlers retreat over a dozen which
breaks the owners heart. I am
expecting a visit anytime from “Mr
Fox” and I urge the Shire to conduct a
survey to consider a Strategic Plan for
dealing with vermin like foxes who
naturally feed their young as the cycle
of life. Even the house opposite
Waroona Police Station lost a couple
a few months ago due to a visit from a
neighbouring fox. My Fox deterrent
lights are still working a treat and
courtesy of my brother Neil have been
a great investment. I have run a barb
wire around half the chookyard left
over from “Old Wally’s” farm and it
must be 35 years old and still in good
condition.
My good friend Peter from Aintree has
loaned me some new barb wire so I
can complete the Fox Wire around the
whole chookyard as I have no roof. A
special thankyou to Paul Caratti who
welded some dog frames together
with a weldmesh heavy duty floor and
the new shed is definitely fox proof
and hygienic. Another talented local
tradesman who helped the chookyard
farmer. Items originated from the
Mundijong Markets. I Must publicly
pay a compliment to a local couple
Gino and Lucy Pisconeri for an
inspiring story of sustainability on a
small rural property on Gardening
Australia despite the hardship of the
January bushfires which put the whole
town under threat. We don’t need a
Tourist Bureau after their story
appeared on National Television. It
was lovely to see the chooks
scratching free range and the use of

Congratulations to Gino and Lucy for
such a positive outlook and fingers
crossed our town and chickens never
have to face such a fearsome natural
disaster on our doorstep. Despite the
cold nights but warmer days in the
last week egg production has greatly
improved which has impressed the
“Home Department” and my
customers. Unfortunately “Collie
Black” the Australorpe Bantam failed
to hatch any chickens but thanks to
Rebecca a Registered breeder from
Serpentine she has successfully
fostered four Silver Lace Wyandotte 2
day old chicks and has not missed a
beat. The eggs were imported from
Queensland. It was nice to see two
chicks riding on her back this morning
during feeding time. I have worked

on a regular basis to ensure
Chookyard Hotel remains a quality
and warm residential chicken
establishment. It was wonderful
having a full time helper, my daughter
Caitlin for nine days in the Chookyard
Dept and hopefully she will have
another two day break in a couple of
weeks. She has taken some lovely
photos and enjoys a cuddle with all
the family pets. She may be the
reason they are laying more eggs due
to that extra attention. It’s now time to
sign off, prepare for Sporting Pulse
teams lists for three games of football
and as the last game is a night game

locked up, safe and sound when I
arrive home about 10.00pm. Cheers
and best wishes -Chookyard Farmer

Waroona's Hard Working Hero's - By Bill Calcott
A new series of Waroona personalities, who stand out in the crowd and have earned
the right to be a Waroona Hard Working Hero!
STOP PRESS
On behalf of the Committee &
Members of DRAKESBROOK
DESPATCH, we salute the
achievement of our very own MIKE
WHITNEY in the winning of this years’
CLUBS WA AWARDS FOR
EXCELLENCE 2015, presented at the
Burswood on Saturday, June 13th and
re-presented at Waroona Bowling
Club on Friday 19th June. The citation
below, details the outstanding effort of
time, planning and execution of the
operations of the Waroona Bowling
Club-, especially over the past few
years. What a lot of people don't
know, is that this fireball of the
essence of volunteering, has been
deeply involved as the Editor of the
Drakesbrook Despatch over the past
four years. Mike spends several
hours per week, in the production of
the 'Despatch' for distribution as
YOUR OWN LOCAL NEWSPAPER,
over 1000 copies to all corners of
Waroona Shire. With his planning,
design, layout, attention to detail and
relentless effort, MIKE WHITNEY
assisted by a dedicated team of
volunteers', produces a crisp, well
balanced news and information sheet
that has become highly sought after
by all residents and visitors alike at
the beginning of each month. Printing
costs are met by trades advertising at
a modest price. With Mike’s
management skills and attributes with
the DRAKESBROOK DESPATCH,
together with his involvement within
the Waroona Bowling Club (inc) and
as he is an active member of the
Waroona Lions Club, he truly
deserves to be our very own hero.
This is the Citation submitted by the
Waroona Bowling and Social Club
Inc.to the committee for consideration
in the Volunteer Contribution Award
(Clubs)
The Waroona Bowling & Social Club
Inc. decided at the beginning of the
year that we would cut costs to
enable funds to be raised which
would enable us to save funds for a
new synthetic bowling green. Mike
offered his services to become an
Approved Manager on a roster
system so that we could manage
and run the bar with volunteer
labour. Mike contributes by being
the approved manager on Friday
evenings for 4 hours every week
and Saturday and Sundays whilst
bowls are being played. Mike also
manages the stock for the bar,
ordering the kegs from CUB,
coordinating the delivery contractor
to collect the kegs, orders the beer,
wine and soft drink from
Cellarbrations and collects this on a
weekly basis. This entails
approximately 6 hours per week.
Mike also volunteered to be the
holder of the Gaming license, which
requires the ordering, stock control,
management reporting and cash
management of the tickets and
finances. The ability of ensuring
that the processes are carried out
correctly is vitally important as the
Dept. RGL do carryout periodic
audits on establishments and due to
Mike's good management skills we
achieved an audit pass in
September 2014.Mike also offered
his skills to be the coordinator of the
Wednesday evening community
lawn bowls with in excess of 60
people playing. This role
incorporates the advertising, the
receiving of nominations,
developing the fixtures, managing
the scoreboard for the competition,
receiving the nomination money
each week and presenting the cash
prizes each week. This has been a
financial windfall for the Club and
fits into our strategy of fund raising
for the new green. Mike also on a
Friday evening, coordinates the
Friday evening raffles, money
draws, and membership draws and
carries out the Friday night bat
draws which people can win various
prizes. Each of these activities
contributes to our strategy of fund
raising. Mike somehow still
manages to play lawn bowls on
Tuesday pennants, Wednesday
competitions, Thursday scroungers
which he is the coordinator of.
Saturday pennants and Sunday club
events. Mike truly represents our
Club as a great Club supporter.

Title: What a gall!
From now until mid-spring is the time
to check your citrus trees for signs of
citrus gall wasp (Bruchophagus fellis).
A pest of the Australian finger lime,
this native insect from the eastern
states was detected in WA in 2013,
though it is probable that the wasp
has been present in Perth for longer
than two years. Citrus gall wasp is
believed to initially have been
introduced to the state by infected
nursery stock. It is currently known to
be present in Lockridge, Beechboro,
Morley, Kiara, Embleton, Bayswater,
Caversham and Eden Hill.
Containment of this citrus pest is
important because if it became
established in commercial orchards it
would be difficult and costly to control.
Citrus gall wasps infest young stem
material on citrus trees causing
distinctive woody galls to form which
protect the developing larvae. These
galls are at their largest and most
visible from June to September and
tend to be most abundant in the lower
canopy. Infestations on citrus trees
can cause reduced leaf production
and decrease fruit yield. In severe
cases the trees may suffer dieback.
Lemon and grapefruit trees and new
growth from citrus rootstocks are most
susceptible. There is only one
you have noticed galls forming on
your citrus trees we would like to hear
from you, especially if you are located
outside the known infestation areas.
Please send clear photos of the galls
with your name, address and contact
information to [email protected]
or call the Pest and Disease
Information Service on 1800 084 881.
For more information about citrus gall
wasps see our website https://
agric.wa.gov.au/n/1175. If you have a
query or want to report something
unfamiliar, ring the Pest and Disease
Information Service (PaDIS) on
Freecall 1800 084 881 or email
[email protected] If sending a
specimen include your contact details,
where and when you found the
specimen and any damage you
observed. Post to PaDIS, Department
of Agriculture and Food, 3 Baron-Hay
Court, South Perth WA 6151. You are
also welcome to bring in specimens in
person. For further information visit

emerges from the gall from
September to December so control
should be carried out by August to
prevent adults emerging and
breeding. Female wasps start laying
eggs immediately which hatch in 2-4
weeks. Gall-bearing branches and
rootstock suckers must be cut off and
mulched, chopped or burnt to control
re-infestation. There are no systemic
insecticides currently registered for
citrus gall wasp control in Australia. If

Application to Hold Mail?
Holding mail for customers is a
service offered by Australia Post that
enables you to temporarily stop your
mail delivery. It is a convenient secure
way to manage your mail when you
are away on holiday or spend time
away from your home or business.
Costs vary according to the period of
time the mail is held, and whether you
hold a concession card or not. We
have forms available and we need at
least 3 full working days from the date
your application is lodged to start your
service. It may seem a rather formal
process to go thru, however hold
stickers need to be generated by
Bunbury, and delivery staff must wait
for them to return to Waroona, to be
able to get the process under way.
Staff are more than happy to quote up
the price for you.

Waroona Veterinary Clinic News
Caring for Cats Series
Quite often we find cats are often
neglected when it comes to
preventative care and veterinary
attention. Quite often this is because
cats appear quite independent. So
over the next few months we will
present a couple of articles
specifically on caring for cats.
Grooming Tips for Cats
Even though cats spend a lot of time
licking and cleaning themselves, they
still need regular brushing and
combing to remove loose hair,
prevent matting and keep the skin
free of diseases and parasites, such
as fleas.
Regular grooming
Establish a regular grooming
program. Once a week is usually
sufficient, though longhaired cats will
need several sessions a week, even
daily, to prevent matting. Regular
grooming is an ideal way to spend
special time bonding with your cat and
is also a good opportunity to check on
your cat’s health. Look carefully for
signs of fleas, ticks, skin irritations,
lumps or sore spots. Get your kitten
accustomed to grooming and being
handled early in life. Place the kitten
on a table with a non-slip mat and
start with short sessions, reassuring
your kitten constantly in gentle tones.
Give her plenty of tasty treats, too!
Learn how your kitten likes to be
combed and brushed, and where she
is sensitive – be careful of her delicate
ears and the stomach area. Grooming
will soon become a special occasion!
Combing
Regular combing will remove any
loose or matted hair, helping to keep
your house clean and to prevent
hairballs. Hairballs are formed in the
cat’s stomach from swallowing too
much hair during grooming and can
cause obstruction. Comb gently in the
direction of hair growth to remove any
tangles or knots. Some knots may
need to be pulled apart gently with
your fingers or carefully trimmed with
scissors. Wide-toothed combs are
good for longhaired cats, and finetoothed combs for shorter coats. Flea
combs are very fine to pick up fleas
and flea dirt from the coat.
Brushing
Brushing also removes dead and
matted hair, and helps detangle.
Regular brushing and combing
stimulates the skin, and natural oils
will be more evenly distributed to give
your cat a healthy, shiny coat. Brush
gently in the direction of hair growth
with a wire slicker brush (good for
thicker coats), or a soft bristle brush.
Rubber grooming devices are also
good for massaging the skin.
Eye care
Cats (and dogs) accumulate small
amounts of secretions and debris at
the inside corners of their eyes, just
like ‘sleep’ in humans. These can be
wiped away gently with a damp cotton
ball, being careful not to touch or rub
the eyeball. Some flat-faced breeds,
such as Persians, tend to have more
discharges and staining of the hair at
the eyelid corners. Products are
available to help reduce this
discolouration, especially in lightcoloured cats, and any long facial hair
can be carefully trimmed to prevent
irritation of the eyes. If the eyes
appear red, painful, or are weeping
excessively you should contact your
vet – this could be due to
conjunctivitis, a serious ulcer, or
abnormalities of the tear duct. If a
foreign body such as a grass seed is
present your cat may blink
excessively and the lids will swell.
Symptoms like these or any inflamed
eye should be treated as an
emergency to avoid serious
complications and, at worst, loss of
the eye.
Ear Care
If you notice any discharge from the
ears, unpleasant smell, redness,
swelling, lumps or your cat is pawing
at its ears or shaking its head, then it
is time to visit your veterinarian.
Foreign objects in the ear, allergies,
ear mites, certain skin conditions and
infections with bacteria, fungi and
yeasts can all cause ear disease.

With Jodie Whitfield - Manager Small Landowner
Information Service Dept.of Agriculture & Food, WA
At this time
of year
plants will
start to slow
down but
there is still
plenty to do
around your
property. If
you are intending on doing any
grafting later in the year collect
dormant wood from stone or pome
fruit and store in a cool room/fridge,
wrapped in damp paper sealed in a
plastic bag, until spring. Monitor stock
for a drop in condition as cold weather
sets in. You may need to increase
roughage supplement as cold slows
pasture growth. Livestock need to
have enough food to ensure that they
can maintain their body temperature.
Your animals will also require shelter.
If you have manmade shelters for
your animals check after rain events
to ensure that they are not
excessively muddy or waterlogged.
Shelters which remain wet for long
periods after rain can cause problems
for animal’s hooves. Consider
improving the facilities for next season
and if significant works are required,
put in temporary measures. Pretty but
poisonous and harmful; the three prime
targets which need to be controlled
now before they develop flowers and
seed heads are cape tulip, Paterson’s
curse and arum lily. For information on
control methods and management
strategies visit the Department of
Agriculture and Food website
agric.wa.gov.au. An updated version
of the Department of Agriculture and
Food’s ‘The Land is in your Hands’ is
now available electronically for property
owners looking for information on
managing their property more
sustainably. For a copy of the revised
document contact the Small
Landholder Information Service
[email protected].
Don’t forget to rotate the different
families of vegetables in your vegetable
patch e.g. brassicas, legumes etc. This
practice will maximise yield by
minimising pests and diseases,
reduce chemical use and manage
nutrient requirements. Continue
planting beetroot, broccoli/cabbage/
cauliflower family, carrots, celery,
lettuce, peas and parsnips. Last
plantings of potatoes and
strawberries. If you are getting low on
fire wood and you harvest your own
remember to keep yourself safe by:
wearing the appropriate PPE, never
operating a chainsaw alone,
considering the tree (you don’t want it
to move unexpectedly) and don’t
overdo it. Cutting and stacking wood
can be tiring so take breaks and get
someone to give you a hand. Store
wood out of the weather so that it can
dry out if damp.
For more information on other small
landholder events, visit our SLIS
Facebook page (facebook.com/
DAFWAsmalllandholders) or website
(agric.wa.gov.au/slis). Until next time,
Jodie.

Waroona Football Club News with Forward
It is hard to believe that
season 2015 is already
2/3 through the 18
qualifying games and
Waroona is in a strong
position in all three
grades with just six
games to go before the
finals. Waroona Colts
after an outstanding start to the
season have come back to the field
and lost their fixture against a hot
South Mandurah outfit a few weeks
ago. Five local boys played in the
Peel Cavaliers and it left only 18
players available for selection and
Waroona were mentally not in the
right frame of mind on the day.
Josh Reeves, Tommy Wilson, Rowan
Gardiner, Jesse Meeres, were four of
those players and they represent
quality. Waroona Colts have fought
hard to consolidate with wins against
Rockingham and Mandurah and
pushed until late in the quarter. Key
forwards Harry Ellis and Josh
Falkstrom have regained touch and
again converting goals after contested
marks. An injury to Centreman Jake
Wilson and Co-Captain Josh
Commisso are key reasons the team
has been struggling and as the top
team they are now the hunted. Rowan
Gardiner has dropped back to Colts
and his pace will be an asset and Tom
Vernon was a great replacement for
Commisso in the last game. Daniel
Snell has been outstanding in defence
in the last two games and together
with Co-Captain Josh Reeves and the
improving Shannon Hart-Cole this
hardworking trio give away no easy
goals. Shannon’s older brother Kohen
adds spine & authority and Jesse
Meeres is the most improved ruckman
in the League. Chad Wrigley seems to
attract the football where ever he goes
and Tyran Planken is also a very
skilful player. All the younger players
Tommy Wilson, Jesse Sawyer,Griffin
Rae, Nicholas Schofield and Austin
Lilly continue to improve and have
given the team depth. Jarvis Ellis is a
hard working interchange Ruckman
and the quality of tall players to throw
into the centre square contests gives
the coaching staff options. Coach
Glen Wilson and his assistant Mark
Spence are taking one week at a time
and need to keep the players mentally
refreshed to remain fully focussed on
the goal of finishing top. Waroona
Reserves despite poor kicking for goal
against Mandurah consolidated third
spot on the premiership ladder. South
Mandurah and Baldivis look the teams
to beat and Waroona must step up if
they are to retain their premiership title.
Playing Coach Lindsay Wilson and his
Assistant John Mason have a nightmare
with availablityof players with injuries to
the League Squad and FIFO workers.
Four Colts players were required to
make up a playing side of twenty two on
Saturday night against the Mustangs.
Jackson Hiscock showed his value to the
team with a best on ground performance
including three goals after a five week
break. Captain Rocky Caruso and Sean
Giumelli on the wings are also hard
running players and league non playing
coach Dean Taylor gives the midfield
some grunt even if for just over half a
game. Michael Vellacott and Josh
Derosa give the half backline running
power and further back Luke Hamson
and Adrian Goff are quality defenders.
Utility players Daniel Rogers and Kurt
Brown together with Coach Lindsay
Wilson play anywhere they are
strategically placed and Nathan Chiera is
a dangerous rover especially around
goals. Zac Indich after missing a place in
the final twenty two in last years
premiership team has lifted his playing
performances and Jake Mobilia is a new
addition to the team by supplying some
muscle power to the contest. Ruckman
Dean Shore is available most weekends
despite his work roster and if he
continues to work on his goal kicking
skills his value to the reserves team will
be further improved. Waroona Reserves
just need to maintain third spot on the
premiership table and to peak at the right
time similar to 2012& 2014 seasons.
Veteran Troy Purser and Matt Mortimer if
not required for League Squad duties will
give the team a tough attitude which is
necessary to win finals football. Waroona
League Squad is still aiming to finish as
minor premiers after starting the season
with a 9/3 winning ratio with two losses
to Halls Head and one to South
Mandurah. Both the League Coach
Dean Taylor and Captain Ben Wright are
confident if they play at their best they
are more than capable of achieving that
goal. In the most even league
competition for years five teams are
genuinely in the race for the flag this
year. Injuries and having the best squad
available will have an impact after the
team finished a close third in season
2014. The team misses the marking
power and calmness of key defender
Ryan McKinley but Clay Smith and
Aidan Fotheringhame have been in good
form to compensate for his absence.
New player for season Simon (Nugget)
McMicking has been a revelation this
season and works really hard to lock the
ball in the forward line and bring fellow
forward into the game. Adam Clancy in
the past two weeks has really stepped
up to the plate in the absence of
leading goalkicker Alan( Foxy) Wilson
and his strong hands have been a
problem for opposition defenders to
match up on. ”Clanger” if he is unable
to mark will bring the ball to the
ground and roving players like Alfred
Angi, Justin Giumelli and Maxie
Gardiner are playing that role strong
in the past three weeks. Midfield Ben
Wright, Courtney Lakay and Jayden
Caratti give Waroona many clearance
opportunities and Ben Mathews
Herald and Jayden Derosa lots of run
on the outside from the wing position.
Mat Thomas celebrated his 150th
League game on Saturday night
versus the “Stangers” and he has
gained a new lease of life running
straight through from the half backline
and long kicks to advantage. Despite
the cold ,dewy conditions he took
another screamer on Saturday night
similar to a couple of Grand Final
performances a few years ago. Chad
Peters returned from a long lay off
from an ankle injury and he should
gain match fitness as well as value to
the team as a hard, tackling defender.
Liam Thomas is enjoying playing off a
half back flank rather than the
restricted back pocket role and Eli
Smith despite a Bali two week break
greatly improves the team “hard ball”
gets which lifts the team. Utility player
Rhett Mason has been promoted to
the leadership group this year and his
versatility to the team is second to
none despite incurring a couple of
injuries to date. June the 30th the final
clearance date is only two days away
if the recruitment staff are able to
bolster the team depth to match
teams like Halls Head who have not
left the cheque book in the back
pocket in an endeavour to win their
first premiership. Centrals spent big $
in 2014 but it is not sustainable and
locals miss out on playing a game of
football for their home town. Waroona
Football Club is very fortunate to have
quality local players that have played
at a higher level and a promising band
of colts coming through the system. A
great example is Courtney Lakay who
played his 200th League game for
Waroona a few weeks ago and he
could have left to play elsewhere but
wished to play with his mates Benny
and Mat. In his original home town.
Waroona Demons worked hard as a
team unit to win four flags in a row
and they are right in the mix for 2015
with a little bit of luck and application.

JULY 2015 Page 35
The Bowling Club Bulletin
As the new financial
year is about to
start, the Club’s
primary focus again
this year is to
continue to raise
funds to replace the
second green with a synthetic one.
We are hard at work looking at every
available opportunity to apply for
funding grants as well as planning
social functions to raise our own
revenue. We are only about a third of
the way there so still have a long way
to go.
One of our biggest money spinners
throughout the year is the annual
Darts Carnival organised by Wally
and June Maughan, which took place
on the weekend of 20th / 21st June.
16 clubs from places as far away as
Albany and Mt Barker plus teams
from the southern suburbs of Perth
took part and brought 96 visitors, not
only to the bowling club but to the
town in general. The Club’s loyal and
willing group of volunteers manned
both the kitchen and the bar for what
turned out to be an extremely busy
weekend and we are forever grateful
and lucky to have such a dedicated
group of hard working men and
women. Takings were down a little on
last year due to a couple of teams
being missing this year but we still
generated a healthy amount towards
the new green.
The Blue Division winners on
Saturday were the Mandurah
“Legends” with Waroona locals “Boots
and All” second and Harvey third.
The White Division winners were local
side “ Big Kev’s Killers” followed by Mt
Barker’s “Duffy’s Nuts”, second and
Gosnell’s ‘K9”, third. The prizes for
biggest peg outs were Phil Basley
(Men’s) and Shirley Corker
(Women’s) on Saturday and on
Sunday, Sharon Charchalis (Women’s
and the legendary Larry Fanto
(Men’s) who not only got 16 peg outs
out of a possible 21 but also got the
highest peg out for men in the entire
White division.
One of the major news items in June
was that the ever-reliable Mike
Whitney won the CLUBS W.A.
Volunteer of the Year award at
Burswood on 13th June. The award is
well deserved as Mike not only looks
after the gaming machines, runs the
Thursday afternoon “Scroungers” and
the Wednesday night Community
bowls program in the summer but has
also been running the bar in the
absence of regular John Hill, as well
as buying supplies and keeping the
bar stocked plus working virtually
every Friday Social night. It’s a
wonder that he hasn’t moved his bed
in to the club although I’m sure that
wife, Pam would have something to
say about that. WELL DONE MIKE!
The Plaque will be hung at the Club
Mike wasn’t at the presentation, so
Club President Ted Russell received
the Club Plus Award for Excellence

The Saturday afternoon “Meat Pack”
competition is now underway every
Saturday afternoons at 1pm with
teams of triples competing for the
yummy packs of steak, sausages and
chicken. And if you want to start
playing bowls, you can always come
along to our Thursday afternoon
“Scroungers” at 2.15pm. Anybody can
join in no matter how inexperienced
they are. It’s a great way of meeting
people and the club is always looking
for new members so come and have
a go!!
