The sculpture garden features a walking path that meanders through the forest, past sculptures including more than 30 works of art on loan from the Smithsonian Institution as well as hidden art. All ages will enjoy a variety of award-winning special events, gallery shows, engaging public art programs, the gift shop, the artLAB (to create) and the beautiful gardens. A nature trail features an elevated boardwalk. The Nature Center houses live animals and exhibits. Classes, demonstrations, field trips and special programs are offered throughout the year. Bruce "Snake" Gabrielson's Surfing Museum and Surf Art Gallery 5005 Bayside Road, Chesapeake Beach, 20732 240-464-3301 • www.marylandsurfmuseum.org Located next to the offices of the non-profit National Surf Schools and Instructors Association and ranked by the Maryland Department of Tourism among its top 20 cultural sites, this private museum contains significant historical items related to the sport of surfing collected by its founder and legendary surfer over the past 50 years. Here you will see unique surfing exhibits and artifacts that other surf museums can only envy. Among the exhibits are Dale Velzy’s shaping equipment, antique surfboards and paintings by some of the nation’s top surf artists. There is also a large collection of surf books for those doing research in the sport. Hours: Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, 5-8 p.m. and some weekends when the surf isn’t good. Formed over 15 million years ago, the cliffs contain more than 600 species of fossils. Ideal for hiking, picnicking, fishing and fossil hunting. Two-mile walk to the beach. Large tire park. Offering a research library that continues to grow in volume and diversity. Family papers describing first-person accounts of historical events, wills, family Bibles, original manuscripts, photographs, published histories, maps and recorded interviews allow researchers to examine how the county has changed over time. The museum building is the only surviving depot station from the old railway and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Free admission. The creek is a significant watershed that empties directly into the Chesapeake Bay. The trail offers scenic views of Fishing Creek and hundreds of acres of surrounding marsh and forest and includes two bridges across the creek and several timber walkways over the creek or marshland. As part of the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science, the lab allows visitors to experience the scientific atmosphere of the research facility, learn about the ecology and natural resources of the Chesapeake Bay and the important contributions made by scientists to our environmental heritage. Hiking trails, fossil hunting, observation platforms, wetlands boardwalk, fishing pier, the beach and visitors center with wildlife exhibits. Picnic tables and grills are provided. See skates and rays, models, paintings, wood carvings, aquarium, fossils and boats. Outdoor exhibits include a boat basin, river otter habitat and a recreated salt marsh. Hours: Daily, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Cove Point Lighthouse 3500 Lighthouse Blvd., Lusby 20657 Experience history at the oldest continuously working lighthouse in Maryland. Grounds include the lighthouse tower built in 1828, a 1901 fog signal building and two keepers’ homes. The six-bedroom keeper’s home was completely restored in 2012 and is now available as a high-end vacation rental and special events venue. The grounds are open during specific hours and are free to tour – check the website for days/hours. A museum interpreter and visitor’s center are on site. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Limited access for wheelchairs. Hours: June-August, daily, 1-4 p.m.; weekends and holidays in May and September. Dee of St. Mary’s Located at the Calvert Marine Museum dock The skipjack Dee of St. Mary’s was built for Jackie Russell in 1979, in Piney Point, Maryland. Russell dredged oysters with the Dee for 10 seasons, until she transitioned to a floating classroom under the banner of the Chesapeake Bay Field Lab. In May 2013, the museum acquired the Dee of St. Mary’s and it is used for educational programs, public sails and private charters. Hours: Check the museum website for dates and times. 4 Calvert County 2016 Visitors Guide Drum Point Lighthouse Located at the Calvert Marine Museum Constructed in 1883 at Drum Point to mark the entrance to the Patuxent River, this screwpile cottage-type light is one of only three remaining from 45 that once served the Chesapeake Bay at the beginning of the 20th century. Decommissioned in 1962, the lighthouse has been beautifully restored, complete with furnishings of the early 20th century. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Hours: Daily, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. J.C. Lore & Sons Oyster House Located ¼ mile south of Calvert Marine Museum Visit this restored 1934 seafood packing house to learn about the boom and decline of the region’s commercial seafood industries. The exhibits explore all aspects of oyster processing, from receiving oysters at the dock to storing, shucking, washing, packing and shipping the product to markets across the region. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Hours: June-August, daily 1-4 p.m.; weekends and holidays in May and September. Wm. B. Tennison Located at the Calvert Marine Museum dock Enjoy a one-hour cruise around Solomons Harbor and the Patuxent R iver aboard the only Coast Guardlicensed log-hulled vessel in America. Built in 1899, this national historic landmark was later converted from sail to power and served as an oyster buyboat until 1978. Departs from the Calvert Marine Museum dock, weather permitting. Assistance needed for wheelchair boarding (ramp). Nearly 70 archaeological sites have been identified on the property, reflecting more than 8,000 years of human occupation. Tour exhibits in the visitor center and exhibit barn, browse the gift shop, hike miles of trails, explore the re-created Indian Village, launch a canoe or kayak, rent the pavilion or just enjoy the beautiful views. Also on the grounds is the Maryland Archaeological Conservation Laboratory, a state-of-the-art archaeological research, conservation and curation facility. Call about scheduling a tour of the facility. Hours: Grounds open Sunday-Saturday, 7:30 a.m.-dusk; Visitor Center open seven days a week, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., March through November. Port Republic School No. 7 has been in this shady grove for more than 100 years. Authentically preserved, the schoolhouse is filled with memorabilia. A site for environmental education, the park features pastures, woodland and wetlands. Amenities include picnic shelters with tables and grills, wetlands boardwalk, fishing pier, launch area for canoes and kayaks, swimming pool ($), shoreline, horse ring and Tom Wisner Hall (for indoor meetings and receptions). Youth camping, horse ring, picnic shelters and hall require reservations. Reservations are required for groups of 30 or more. Offering education for grades 1 through 7, it was built in the early 1880s and remained in use until 1934. Located on the grounds of Calvert Elementary School. Museum covers the history of manned spaceflight and features historical artifacts from the Mercury Program to the International Space Station and beyond. Includes an International Space Station exhibit, space food, space suits from the U.S., China and Russia, equipment from inside the shuttle and much more. Many handson activities, including a working glove box, astronaut gloves, planetarium shows and a Kidz Zone (for ages 3-7). Hours: Check our website for operating hours. The park includes a pier and two gazebos. The area has a small visitor center with public restrooms and vending machine refreshments. The competition pool with diving area is 50 meters long by 25 yards wide with depths of 4 feet to 12.5 feet with ramp entry. Diving area has 3-meter, 1-meter and half-meter diving boards. Leisure pool has play features including three water slides. Therapy pool contains an in-water bench, a deep end and hand rails for exercise. The facility also has a conference room and party room available to rent.
