_________ I
recently had an opportunity to take a walk through
Newnan’s Oak Hill Cemetery with Elizabeth Beers. She
was conducting a tour for a few folks who wanted to learn
more about Newnan’s rich history, and, inasmuch as it was
publicized in The Coweta Shopper, I decided to join the
group and see what I could learn.
Miss Elizabeth has become an authority on the history of
our area, and especially the City of Newnan and its former
residents. Her cemetery tour was not only informative, but
entertaining, as she told interesting stories about the families whose ancestors now reside at Oak Hill. As we walked
and listened, it became evident to me that the names on those patinaed, stone markers formed the very foundations of Newnan’s business, industry, education and religion.
They made good decisions and got us started in the right direction, then future generations built on those foundations to make Newnan and Coweta County a high quality
place to live. And it’s not just the old family names. Our community is still growing, and
new families are arriving and adding their knowledge, abilities and ideas, and becoming
an integral part of our success. Perhaps a little “red blood” with the right attitude may be
just as good as “blue blood”.
Anyway, as the tour progressed, I
quietly made a side trip to what may
be my final resting place. (No, not
my sofa.) I say “may be” because, in
1913, my wife’s second great grandmother was buried in their “new”
family plot in Oak Hill. But we have
a choice, since the family purchased
another plot there in 1948. So, here’s
the “choice” part of this matter. I can
choose to spend “eternity” next to my
mother in law, or “rest in peace” in the
old plot down the path. But since I’m
just a “tag-a-long” with less than 43
years seniority with the family, I think
I’ll let my wife make that decision. The
price is right and beggars can’t be choosers. I’m just happy to have a place to lie down.

Postscript: Actually I was quite fond of my wife’s mother - she was one of the kindest
persons I knew. So, inasmuch as I could not stand to be seperated from the wife I love,
It would be an honor if they would let me be buried between them.

Kimberly Gomez-Elvira, the

Library on June 7
Marie Vielot, the Grantville Branch
Library Manager, recently announced
that included in this year’s Summer
Reading Program will be an “Own The
Night Teen Read-In Book Discussion”
of the Young Adult vampire series written by Coweta author Tamala Callaway. Callaway herself will be present
to answer any questions regarding the
character development, plot, theme, and
the progression in this series, a hexology
titled “Super Natural” which is set in today’s Coweta County. All six books have
been written, the first two of which have been published -- the first in 2010 New
Beginnings and the second Love Crazed in 2012. The program begins at 4 PM, and
is open to the public, and will be of especial interest to teens because of the many
teen characters in the stories and because the vampires act like teens! Also, all of
the places in the story are real -- Coweta’s high schools are mentioned, as are Junction Lanes Bowling, La Parilla Restaurant, the new Kroger, Newnan Hospital and
the Ashley Park Mall. Callaway is indebted to her daughters for encouraging her to
write these books and for providing much of their content. Callaway is a member
of the Coweta Writers Group and has participated the the New Writers Nights at
Barnes and Noble. For information on this and the other Grantville Library programs, call Tel no. (770) 683-0535.

Please mention you saw it in
The Coweta Shopper
Newnan Hospital on Poplar Road,
came into the world on Tuesday,
May 8 at 7:55 p.m.
Neely Dean, M.D., of Piedmont
Physicians Obstetrics and Gynecology at Newnan, delivered the
seven pounds, three ounces bundle
of joy in one of the new Labor-Delivery-Recovery (LDR) suites at the
new facility. Baby Kimberly is the
fourth child of Grantville residents
Julia and Ramiro Gomez. After
visiting Dr. Dean’s office earlier in
the day on Tuesday, Julia Gomez
was sent to the new facility on Poplar Road to be induced.
“We have had a beautiful experience at Piedmont Newnan Hospital,” said Gomez. “Since we arrived, the service has been outstanding. The building
is beautiful, and everyone has been very welcoming. We were really surprised that
she was the first baby born at the new hospital.”
The new 136-bed hospital features five Labor-Delivery-Recovery (LDR) suites,
each equipped with advanced fetal heart monitoring technology; 14 post-delivery
rooms for mother and baby; a neonatal nurse practitioner-led resuscitation team
available 24 hours a day, seven days a week; and a Level II Neonatal Intensive Care
Unit (NICU), featuring six private NICU rooms, which will be used to provide longterm care for premature infants born at 32 weeks and older.
The new Piedmont Newnan Hospital on Poplar Road officially opened on Tuesday,
May 8. For more information on the new hospital and the services offered, visit
piedmontnewnan.org.
next week’s Shopper will be mailed to the A Zone - 16,401 addresses in City of Newnan, Arbor Springs,
Ashley Park, Avery Park, Country Club, Lake Hills, Lake Redwine, SummerGrove and some rural routes ~

All you need is a caring heart!
Your involvement will communicate value to these patients and their families as
you provide companionship
and a brief respite for caregivers. You will not need to
provide any medical or physical care to the patient, just a
caring heart and a listening
ear. You can provide caregiver
relief for 2-4 hours each week
to allow the caregiver to enjoy
time out of the home. You can
use your gifts and talents to
impact someone in their last
stages of life in many ways,

Decor Shopping at Home
Shopping from the comfort of your home, at your
computer, perhaps in your pj’s while having your
morning coffee has become ...well, common place.
When I talk about shopping at home, I’m not talking
about online shopping. I’m talking about physically getting up, walking around
your own home, poking around in your attics, basements, storage areas and
shopping through your tired old discarded furniture and accessories. Dragging
them out, looking at them with a fresh eye and breathing new life into them in a
fun new way.
Say you have inherited your grandmothers velvet covered wingback chairs, they have sentimental value, but you’re not sure how to incorporated
them into your home with your “not so wingback
like” furniture. Think about painting the legs, and
covering the chair in a current fun fabric like geometrics or ikat and you now have yourself a one
of a kind updated chair, that still has sentimental
value, but looks like you.
Perhaps you’ve just combined households and
the furniture is miss matched in a bad way and
you want to make it look more cohesive without
spending a fortune buying new furniture. I say,
bring out the paint, baby. A great way to make miss matched furnishings “match”
is with black paint. Then add some new hardware, and you’ve got yourself a Pottery Barn look without the price tag. WARNING: the man of the household usually
has a problem with this process because they think that you shouldn’t cover up
wood … I say, just because it’s wood, doesn’t mean it’s good. What have you
got to lose? Once you explain to him that it’s either this, or buy new expensive
furniture, I think he’ll see your side of things. Either way, you were going to get
rid of that look, right?

bring out the spray paint in a fun bright color and spray away (be sure to check

What’s In Your Garage?
Live Below Your Means!
That was VW’s marketing message in the
1960’s. But over 50 years later, this classic is a favorite with many collectors world
over. We recently saw this beautifully restored 1965 model at a car show in Newnan.
Its owner, Carl Pope, has restored this car
to original condition, including new factory
interior and a yellow paint job that looks a
foot deep. Carl painted the wheels red and
added a top carrying rack, both very common for this model in the 60’s. “I’ve been
around cars since I was a boy while watching my Dad work in his garage”. Carl’s 12 year old daughter, Karley, has picked up the interest and
really enjoys learning and helping, too.

The German Volkswagen was designed to be the “Peoples Car”, which would carry three children and two
adults at a speed of 60 MPH! The rear engine car made
about 34 horse power and had a 4-speed floor shifter.
It was as simple, economical and reliable transportation and eventually sold millions. You can still see the
modern day versions on the road today, which look
somewhat like the originals and are made in Mexico.
Originally costing a mere $1,663, one was sold this year
at the RM auction for $34,550. Not a bad return on
investment!

Legal Briefs:
Bill Stemberger
Summer is right around the corner, and with
summer comes many new student drivers on
the roadway. Last month was designated National Distracted Driving Month. Distracted driving
kills more than 5,000 people and injures nearly
450,000 more each year. The majority of these
people are teenage drivers. Distracted driving
can mean not only the use of a cell phone or texting, but can also be visual
such as taking your eyes off the road, manual by taking your hands off the
wheel, or cognitive by taking your mind off the road.
Texting and talking on the phone are both mental and physical distractions. Cell phone use is attributed to eighteen percent (18%) of the fatality
rate of distracted-related crashes. But what makes up the other eighty-two
(82%)? This includes reaching over to grab a drink, changing the music on
the radio, putting on lipstick, reading a roadmap, eating on the go, and
many other seemingly “harmless” diversions.
Talking on the cell phone makes a driver four (4) times more likely to
have a crash or a near crash event. Texting makes them twenty-three (23)
times more likely to have this happen. Studies have shown that texting
slows driver reaction time even more than alcohol.
Our children are inexperienced drivers and it is important to engage
in discussions of how to drive safely. This would include driving without
texting, driving without making or receiving calls or texts, and letting your
teenagers know to call or text before they start driving to let parents or
friends know when they will arrive. If or when teenagers do receive a call,
instruct them to pull over to the side of the road safely before making or
receiving any calls or texts.

“Meadow Memories”
There is something especially appealing about our Eastern meadows. It seems to come from our earliest
origins - this attraction to water, light and open land.
I have always loved nature, having grown up in the country on a farm. We descend from a long line of
farmers and landowners. On my mother’s father’s side we have been “horse people” all the way back to
Ireland. My fourth great-grandmother on my father’s father’s side received a 202 1/2 acre tract from the
lottery when Coweta County was settled about 1830. The acreage was considerably enlarged by my greatgrandfather. There are wonderful memories of long summer days traversing the farm on foot and on horseback with my collie or the beagles. Once clear cut and planted, fields had, by then, been slowly allowed to
return to woods and meadows. Several branches flowed through these to the creek.
Many kinds of wildflowers grew in sunny meadows or shady woodlands, in dry areas and wet places.
There were Blacked-eyed Susans, Queen-Anne’s Lace, Liatris, Goldenrod, Butterfly Weed, Wild Asters,
Rabbit Tobacco, Wild Phlox, Honeysuckle, Trumpet Vine, Maypop, Daisies, Native Azaleas, Rain lilies,
Cattails, Joe-Pye-Weed, Swamp Rose, Grasses, Evening Primrose, Wild Violets, Yucca, Ditch lilies, Blueeyed Grass, Sumac, Mullein, Fleabane, Purple Thistle, Hearts-A-Bursting, Milkweed, and so many more
less known types. Of course, I used the term wildflower loosely. They were not planted or watered, or fertilized, or sprayed, or tended. There were just there; and they were just beautiful! My grandmother had added
numerous ground cover rambling roses, naturalized daffodils and native wisteria.
Meadows are open areas in full sunlight. They differ from prairies, mainly, in the amount of rain fall
yearly. Meadows generally have more flowering plants while prairies have more grasses. Meadows provide
food and cover for birds, animals, bees, butterflies and insects. Do not destroy the balance of nature by
using chemicals. Plants should be allowed to grow, bloom, set seeds, and die down naturally. Grasses and
perennial natives should be allowed to remain. True meadows (established) do not require additional fertilizing, or watering, or spraying. They must be mowed or bushhogged a couple of times a year to remove
shrubs and trees sprouting.
In planning a widlflower meadow keep these things in mind:
•
use plants and seeds native to the area to be planted
•
plant seeds in the fall
•
water will be needed the first year if rainfall is
not plentiful

Some people use herbicides to kill everything, wait two weeks, and repeat (after tilling the soil) and then
plant. They will also use herbicides selectively the first year to eliminate undesirables. Small areas could be
hand weeded yearly. A true meadow is tall, loose, and wild. It’s not a subdivision front yard plan. (We only
apply herbicide sparingly to kudzu.)
It is a great pleasure to look out of my living room windows, across the lake, to the natural meadow, and
beyond that to the old growth trees. Including our children and grandchildren, nine generations of my family have been blessed by this experience.

Local Fitness Club Members Lose Weight, Win Big
Snap Fitness announces winners of their “Lose Weight Challenge”
The local Snap Fitness club is full of losers this season – just ask the owner.
“Our club is packed full of losers, and we couldn’t be more thrilled,” said Steve McAdams, Snap Fitness
owner in Newnan. “We’ve seen a number of our members lose a lot of weight over these past eight weeks,
and we’re proud to say we helped them get there.”
Steve is referring to the “8-Week Lose Weight Challenge,” which took place at Snap Fitness during the
months of March and April. Members were able to participate in this fun, free in-club contest and received
recommended workout plans, regular private weigh-ins and weekly tips from our Personal Trainers.
In the end, Hector Caban, Snap Fitness member from Newnan was the local grand prize winner, receiving
three free months of membership and $300 cash, for dropping a total of 34 pounds. Coming in second place
was Audrey Adams who won two free months and $200. Ahmaud Tinker was the third place winner who
received a free month and $100.
Club Manager, Dave Edwards said that the Challenge was a great success for the club and the members.
“The winter months are one of the toughest times of the year when it comes to reaching your fitness
goals,” said Dave. “The Challenge has helped make losing weight fun and rewarding, helping our members
get the results they want.”
Located at 3219 E. Hwy 34, the Newnan Snap Fitness offers 24/7 access via electronic key card entry,
along with the industry’s best cardio and weight training equipment for a quality workout experience in a
clean, comfortable environment.
Are you looking to shed a few pounds before swimsuit season? Call 770-251-6900 or visit www.snapfitness.

Soft Foods for Seniors
Eating a healthy, well-balanced meal is important at any age, but it’s especially necessary for seniors. Here are some tips for staying healthy in your golden years:
• Get plenty of water.
• Eat high-quality proteins such as eggs, lean meats, poultry and fish.
• Incorporate a good balance of carbohydrates and fiber such as bread, cereals,
pasta and other grain products into your diet.
• Get calcium from low-fat sources such as milk, yogurt, cheeses and broccoli.
• Stay active physically, mentally and socially.
Sometimes, because of a variety of health challenges, a soft food diet is recommended for senior citizens. This budget-friendly recipe for Fettuccine With Sun-Dried
Tomatoes serves two, but can be easily doubled to serve more. Eggs are used as a
high-quality but inexpensive source of protein. It’s easy to make and eat, and freezes
well.

1. Combine the fettuccine, broccoli and tomatoes in large pot of boiling, salted
water. Cook until pasta is tender but firm, about 6 to 8 minutes; drain, reserving
1/2 cup of pasta water.
2. Return the pasta, broccoli and tomatoes to the pot. Add the pesto, Italian seasoning, pepper and cayenne pepper; toss until evenly coated.3. Beat the eggs
and milk in a bowl until blended. Pour egg mixture over pasta, stirring gently to
coat and combine.
3. Cook over medium heat, stirring gently, until the mixture thickens and no visible liquid from the egg remains. Add in some of the reserved pasta water, as
needed, if the pasta seems too dry. Sprinkle with cheese and basil or parsley, if
desired. Serves 2.

Idea House Returns To Senoia
2012 Historic Farmhouse Renovation, Senoia
For more than 20 years, Southern Living has built Idea Houses on the
lake, on the beach, and in quaint towns across the South. This year, the
brand will return to Senoia, GA for a historic renovation project.
“Great films deserve even better sequels, and we just couldn’t resist
the opportunity to bring our readers the next installment in the renaissance story of Senoia,” said Kristen Payne, Executive Marketing Director, Southern Living. “We’re heeding the calls to serve up more from
the town of our award-winning 2010 Idea House.”
Enter Senoia, 25 miles and 100 years from Atlanta, where the main
street looks like a scene out of Driving Miss Daisy—because it actually
was. The town doubles as a back lot for popular film and TV projects
such as the classic Fried Green Tomatoes and AMC’s current hit, The
Walking Dead. But dig a little deeper and you will find a community
committed to eco-friendly construction—right down to the electric
cars parked in front of the diner.
“We think American towns are moving away from impersonal subdivisions and toward a stronger sense of community, and Senoia in particular, blends the best of modern construction with the nostalgia of
yesterday,” adds Payne. “The year 2012 will be a celebration of that
sentiment through the restoration of one of Senoia’s oldest homes.”
The 2012 Southern Living Idea House will be a revival of an early 19th
century cottage-style farmhouse whose makeover has been masterfully
designed by the noted team of architects and place makers at Historical Concepts from the neighboring town of Peachtree City. Completing the team is John Bynum Custom Homes, Inc., one of the Atlanta
area’s premier custom home builders, Senoia’s Historic Development
Ventures, LLC, and nationally-recognized interior design firm, Tracery
Interiors.
This farmhouse revival project is expected to draw as many as 40,000
visitors from across the country, and Southern Living is scheduled to
feature it the August 2012 issue. The home will be open for tours from
June to December 2012, Wednesday – Saturday 11 AM – 5 PM and
Sunday 1 – 5 PM. The Idea House will be closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
About Historical Concepts: Historical Concepts is a traditional architecture and planning firm well known for designing new homes and
communities with timeless appeal. The firm also offers design services for modernizing historic homes while maintaining their original

traditional design philosophy and commitment to quality has also resulted in numerous awards for design excellence, including multiple
Southern Home Awards from Southern Living magazine. The design
of the Idea House complements the firm’s ongoing contributions to
revitalizing and protecting the historic community, which is located in
close proximity to the firm’s offices. Founded in 1982, and with offices
in Atlanta and Peachtree City, Georgia, Historical Concepts is led by Jim
Strickland and partners Terry Pylant, Aaron Daily, Andrew Cogar and

About Senoia and Historic Development Ventures, LLC: Winner of
the 2010 Georgia Renaissance Award, the Historic Senoia Project is a

and cultural experience and boasts shopping, attractions and oodles
of ambience. Many of the vacant parcels of land in Senoia’s Historic
District have been acquired for the purpose of constructing period infill development, designed with a dual purpose: to blend seamlessly
with the town’s early 1900’s architecture while serving as a back lot
for film and television production at nearby Raleigh Studios - Atlanta.
The scope of Senoia’s revitalization includes retail/commercial, office/
professional, a 4 star boutique hotel, and in-town residential elements,
masterfully planned to offer modern amenities and technology within
the context of a historic sense of place. Learn more at historicsenoia.

NuLink announced the availability of new, faster speeds
for their High Speed Internet customers today. Coweta
County’s premier Cable TV, Phone and High Speed Internet

According to NuLink CEO Dan Shoemaker, “In today’s world,

“At the Piedmont Heartburn Treatment Center, we take a team approach
to developing an individual’s plan of care,” said Karen Strickland, R.N.,
nurse coordinator at Piedmont Heartburn Treatment Center. “GERD affects
every individual differently. Therefore, our team of specialized physicians
and I work together to come up with a treatment plan that is right for that
particular individual.”
The new Piedmont Heartburn Treatment Center features two procedure
rooms and shares 21 of the Ambulatory Surgery Center’s private pre- and
post-procedure rooms. It also has state-of-the-art equipment including Bravo pH and High Resolution Esophageal Manometry, in addition to a team of
physicians specially trained in the performance and interpretation of these
studies and all available GERD therapies.
For more information on the Piedmont Heartburn Treatment Center or
to schedule a complimentary consultation, call 770-400-2400. Other services that soon will be available in the Piedmont Medical Plaza include the
