This year we celebrate ENDURING BRILLIANCE! The Pastel Society of America at 40! It is hard to believe that it has been 40 years since Flora B. Giffuni, our dear and special lady, had a dream of creating a society “For Pastels Only!” and brought it all into existence. Over these 40 years, we have grown from just a handful of pastelists to almost 1,000 and are continuing to grow. In July, a total of 937 entries were juried for this 40th Exhibition and 198 were accepted. It was such a difficult task since there were so many exquisite paintings from which to choose. It’s too bad the walls of the NAC Grand Gallery could not have been stretched to accommodate more! Dr. Louis A. Zona, Executive Director and Chief Curator of the Butler Institute of American Art, has served as the Awards Judge this anniversary year. As well as selecting the winning paintings here, Dr. Zona has chosen 40 works (for our 40 years) to be exhibited at the Butler. These selections will be at the Butler in the Flora B. Giffuni Pastel Gallery from late December 2012 to February, 2013. How pleased Flora would be! During the months from May to September 2, 2012, PSA was invited and juried for an exhibition by the Noyes Museum in Oceanville, NJ. Forty-one paintings were chosen by the museum’s curator, and enjoyed by many visitors to the Jersey Shore this past summer. While our members’ paintings were shown, I had the opportunity to give a talk to an audience visiting the museum, telling them all about the wonders of painting with pastels and the artists whose works were in the exhibition. Our school is thriving with classes almost every day at the National Arts Club. The workshop program has been very successful too, since its start, under the able direction of the PSA School’s Director, Maceo Mitchell. Artists have the choice of a three-day workshop or a one-day, Sunday workshop. Many of the scheduled workshops have waiting lists. Please call for a brochure or look for classes and workshops on our web site. If you have not visited the PSA web site, please do! We try to keep it up to date, and there is a great deal of information and news for everyone interested in the medium of pastels. So, paint away and enjoy this special medium of pastel — and if you have not already done so, we invite you to join us and become a member in the Pastel Society of America. I look forward to meeting you! Rae Smith, PSA President A N N U A L C A T A L O G 2 0 1 2 5 Juror of Awards Donors of Exhibition Awards u DR. LOUIS A. ZONA Since 1981, Dr. Louis A. Zona has been Executive Director and Chief Curator at The Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown, Ohio. As Butler director for over thirty years, Dr. Zona has showcased masters of American art, organizing exhibitions of private collections (including that of Leo Castelli) as well as solo shows by contemporary masters including Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, Chuck Close, Janet Fish, Kenneth Noland, Robert Motherwell, and Judy Chicago among many others. Under Dr. Zona’s direction, displays of Butler collection masterpieces have been shown in New York City, Chicago, Washington D.C., Los Angeles, as well as in international venues in Japan, Germany, Rome, and Spain - firmly establishing the Butler museum’s reputation as a major art world entity. In 2004, Dr. Zona created a gallery at the Butler Institute specifically for the display of American pastel art, naming the space The Giffuni Pastel Gallery to honor patron and friend of pastels Flora B. Giffuni (1919-2009). Since that time, numerous solo and group exhibitions of works in pastel have been showcased in this beautiful space, and each year the Giffuni Gallery presents a selection of works from the annual Pastel Society of America’s members show. The author of numerous articles on art and art history, Dr. Zona is also Emeritus Professor of Art History at Youngstown State University, where he has been an instructor for over four decades. He is the recipient of numerous national awards and honors, including the Gari Melchers Medal for outstanding contributions to American art and culture, the Friend of Pastels Award (awarded by the PSA), the Ohio Governor’s Award For Arts Administration, and the Butler Institute’s Medal for Life Achievement in American Art. I seek a congruity with nature or the figure or whatever when I execute a painting. This congruity is a harmonious, visceral and intellectual response to nature or a theme. If it is on location, it is a particular subject matter, enhanced by a certain time of day. If it’s an abstract, it’s usually an abstracted subject matter more than a non-objective one. One way or another, I would be responding to the emotional contents - the mood enhanced by light and color. My aim is not to assiduously “scribe” or detail it, but to look for the essence in that subject or theme. So, I am abstracting the representational subject matter. I work from photos a lot nowadays, but sketch outdoors when I can. My credo is to interpret, to translate and not to copy. Please talk about the roles color play in your paintings. From the value standpoint, light, middle, and dark values create your illusion of depth on a flat surface. The range of these values dominate the mood of a painting; e.g. the Tenebrism of a Rembrandt, which is extreme light contrast on dark (chiaroscurro) around a figure; the middle value/light of a Wyeth; the contrast and dark of a Daumier. I vary my approaches in accord with the particular painting I am working on. I do You have described yourself as a maverick. How has this trait affected your art and career? As an artist, I am always exploring and experimenting, and I don’t like to be branded or qualified in any technique or method totally. Therefore, when one sees a number of my paintings, they see a varied approach that reflects my adventures in art. I realize that galleries often seek continuity of style as a byproduct of their selling approach. So gallery dealers have to appreciate my diversity. This is difficult for some, but this is what I am. I love color, but I enjoy tonal painting, abstract or representational approaches. As a teacher, What qualities do you think make for a strong/good work of art? Frank Federico, PSA, Autumn Quarry, pastel, 12" x 16" it helps the student find a “voice” by selection. As an artist, it varies in the marketBalance, whether symmetrical or asymmetriplace until one knows and appreciates my personal energy. cal. Interesting surface quality – this gives vent to adventures in surface. Some paintings can be deadly in their unappealing flatness; some can be What advice to improve can you offer the beginner; over-surfaced, distracting from the content of a painting. A use of value the intermediate; and the advanced artist in pastel? that enhances the spatial qualities and depth to a painting. Color use Beginner – find your "water level" by exploration, experimentation, that emulates nature but reflects one’s own persona. Recognizing and studying art of all ages, take a few workshops to learn methods, but objectively using compositional tenets, whether it be the golden section, don’t become a clone. Be careful of being a trend follower. This can Feng Shui, or the seesaw principle of balancing around a central point.. be stultifying if you want to be creative. This can help create well organized paintings or conversely open the Intermediate – Repeat all of the above and practice, practice, practice! door to departure from the stultifying aspects of the same principles. Advanced – Continue to explore, keep your mind open, keep painting, appreciate your ability and pass it on to others. Let’s talk about composition – how do you arrange shapes, values and colors to make a painting work? Although it is relatively easy to seek focal points or centers of interest, I find it more challenging and exciting to factor in dominance in a painting. Whether it be in shapes, colors, values, symmetry or asymmetry, dominance can direct the eye into the painting and around the inside, coming to rest on a dominant color, object or shape - and subordinating elements to that dominant shape with values and colors as your tools. We are creating an illusion of dimension on a flat surface. How it’s done is an adventure in manipulating all the parts to create a cohesive painting. like the drama of exciting colors and contrast in my paintings. But each painting has its own life and I am the orchestrator. As the old saying goes, “color is the child of light.” Color is a strong factor in my paintings, but because of my diverse responses to a theme or subject, the colors vary and I “play different riffs” in the execution of a piece. Mood in a painting influences my color choices. I usually use a range of warm and cool of each primary, ochre, some store- bought earth greens and browns, and black or Paynes gray. One can do anything with a primary palette. You state that you are a Romanticist in painting. Also you’ve said painting is first an energy, then a technique. Please explain. My form or idea of Romanticism relates to the personal, the dramatic, the emotional. Being somewhat of a dreamer, I look for those aspects as compared to more austere classical or unemotional works. However, I don’t want to be rigid in categorizing myself as I love to experiment, though I do like my work to reflect mood, passion and even reflection (quietude). I like to energetically start a painting, exercising a vigorous "brush" and an active mind. The technique part is a consolidation of the components of the painting that is first activated by an energetic beginning. Hence, alla prima, immediate, brush work, impressionistic method, action painting, directness - all apply to the energy of painting, which augments technique. Frank Federico, PSA, Village Scene, pastel, 18" x 24" A N N U A L C A T A L O G 2 0 1 2 9 “FRIEND OF PASTEL” HONOREE 2012 Anne Hevener Interview by Robert K. Carsten, PSA How did you feel when you learned that you are the PSA “Friend of Pastel” Honoree 2012? Truthfully, I was totally stunned! It took a long time to sink in but I appreciate that the PSA board wanted to recognize not just what I’ve done for Pastel Journal, but for pastel in general. I feel that there are 9 to 5 jobs and then there are those of us who are lucky enough to have a job that we are really passionate about. I was honored to be recognized for going above and beyond. How do you see pastel in context with the art world in general? I find it interesting how pivotal the art societies and art organizations are, here and internationally, in furthering interest in the medium. Exhibition-wise, what we do here in the U.S. and what we see taking place in the U.K., and France and Taiwan, for example, has really expanded awareness. I also find, when I’m interviewing international artists, that there are so many commonalities. It doesn’t seem to matter whether I’m talking to someone in Edinburgh, Madrid, or Kansas City, I hear a lot of the same observations: how artists love the directness of pastels, how they wish they had learned about the medium in art school or college, and how once they made the discovery, it became a singular focus. These are all universal experiences. Do you sense a revival, a growing in popularity of pastels? The revival was already happening when I kind of came on the stage. Certainly, I haven’t seen any slowing down. I think the PSA can be given much of the credit for sparking the renaissance 40 years ago. I think PSA lends credibility to the medium and to those working in it and encourages artists to become their own advocates and public educators and I think that has become very important in celebrating the merits of the medium and making people aware. As more and more artists work in the medium, manufacturers follow and new and better materials generate even more enthusiasm. Once you have all these enthusiasts and you add a magazines devoted to this passion – now you have a forum for sharing insights and celebrating what’s being done and suddenly you have a real, thriving community. So I think all of these things have worked, continuing a spark that started four decades ago. Are there any certain qualities you see characteristic of pastelists? Something that always strikes me is how generous the pastel community is. How willing artists are in sharing what they 10 P A S T E L S O C I E T Y O F A M E R I C A know, passing on tips, their discoveries, techniques that have helped them learn and grow. So I end up feeling, whether formally or informally, everyone’s a teacher, sharing the joy and passing it on in this very supportive community. As Editor of Pastel Journal, what do you feel is your role in developing vision and content? I feel the main role is to be the eyes and ears - to know what’s happening, find good content, and to understand what it is people want to know and find out about - then to figure out how to present those things in an inspiring way in the magazine. So, hopefully, even the little things I am doing are working towards that goal. I would love to believe that an artist of any caliber, first-timer or professional gallery artist, can find some inspiration in Pastel Journal and other art periodicals. Knowing that it is very difficult to cater to everyone’s needs in every article, I would love to think that there might be one bit of cleverness that sparks an idea that someone can take into the studio or something that maybe kick starts your creative thinking. What roles do you think competitions and competitive exhibitions play? Competitions are important on a number of levels. The most important one being that it’s motivating, encouraging one to set goals and to have a painting ready to enter. They keep people working and striving to do their best. Secondly, having an opportunity to have your work seen is rewarding for an activity that can be rather solitary. Then, of course, there’s always a chance that you can earn recognition, win prizes, or get into a show where your work will be seen by a number of people. In Pastel Journal and other magazine competitions, it can also lead to publication, exposing your work to large audiences. How do you feel about experienced, even noted artists entering competitions? When experienced professionals enter, I feel it brings up the prestige for everyone - the competition, the medium and everyone working in it. I think it should only be motivating to be in a competition with the best of the best - that has to feel exciting! Anything else you would like to add? Yes, I would like to add, “Happy Fortieth, PSA!” We all have a lot to be grateful for and Pastel Journal is showing our appreciation of PSA and the PSA School in the form of a feature in our October issue entitled, “The Best Advice I Ever Got.” Alphabetical List of Exhibiting Artists PSA ANNUAL EXHIBITION 2012 Name A B C D E F Allison, Brooke André, Patti Arkhipau, Genady Armstrong, Linda Auclair, Marie Helene Augustine, Elaine Bailey, Brian E.
