Steam and Gas Association’s annual open house, at the U.P. State Fairgrounds will offer free Yuletide fun for the entire family! Enjoy an old-fashioned festive atmosphere with decorations, music, horsedrawn rides, roasted chestnuts, hot chocolate and goodies galore. Also check out the Night Race at 7p.m. on February 15th. Cross Country Skiing / Snowshoeing WARNING Silent sport participants will find miles of beautiful and diverse nature areas to explore, all trails welcome cross country skiers and there are a handful of paths available to snowshoers as well. Options for an action packed day in our beautiful outdoors include: Always exercise caution before venturing onto the ice - please check ice conditions and heed warnings, avoiding river mouths where heavy currents and unstable ice are often found - for updated ice conditions please contact the Bays de Noc Convention and Visitors Bureau or an area bait shop. Escanaba River State Forest Known as the Cedar River Pathway, this is an eight mile trail system featuring four stacked loops. The first two miles of the pathway run along the banks of the Cedar River and then lead skiers into a forest with varied terrain. The trailhead is located within the campground. More info at GreatLakesIceRacing.com • Eight miles north of Cedar River via M-35 and County Road 551 Ice Fishing on Little Bay de Noc JIG IT! ICE FISHING EXTRAVAGANZA The eighth annual Jig It! Ice Fishing Extravaganza will be held Saturday, January 25th, 2014 from 11 - 2 p.m. on Little Bay de Noc in Escanaba. The tournament is a fundraiser for Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Bay Area and continues to grow each year. Not only is the event open to all ages and levels of experience, but with a first place prize of $2,000, who wouldn’t want to drop a line! The entry fee is $25 per hole, increasing to $30 the day of the event. This is a fantastic fishing event that puts the FUN in FUNdraiser! Kids under the Ice Fish Pond! (10am – 3pm) A wire fence cage will be set up under the ice and stocked with 800-1000 trout for kids 0-14 yrs old. The cost is $5.00 per fishing round. Escanaba’s rinks are supervised during scheduled hours. Both rinks have warming shelters with skate changing areas and restrooms. Rinks are lighted during evening hours. Music is provided via an outdoor PA system. Rinks are open to the public, free of charge. Ice skating and hockey are also available at the Wells Sports Complex. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned “snowshoe-er”, this is a great opportunity to get outside and boost physical activity in the winter months. Snowshoes for both adults and children can be rented for free at the Escanaba Civic Center or the Public Health Department in Escanaba. All snowshoes must be checked out by a responsible party at least 18 years of age. Group Ski Join a group of ski enthusiasts on Tuesday nights at 7pm at the Escanaba Pathway. For more information call 786-4141. Lantern Lit Cross Country Ski Ski by the light of kerosene lanterns through the historic village of Fayette on January 25th at 7pm. This unique experience is one you’ll be sure to remember. A popular summer destination because of its pristine harbor and limestone cliffs, Fayette State Park features a five mile trail system that is open year-round. The trail connects the town site, beach and campground providing a wonderful and wintry point of view for cross country skiers and snowshoers. Serenity seekers will find Fayette full of beauty and tranquility, and the option of staying just a little longer is available with the rental of the former Park Ranger cottage (now known as the Furnace Hill Cottage) that is perfect for winter pursuits. Located on the Garden Peninsula, the trailhead is one mile past the entrance to the historic Fayette town site off of M-183. • Sixteen miles south of US-2 on M-183 Escanaba Cross Country Pathway Although its located within the city limits, the Escanaba Pathway takes skiers to the serene setting of a peaceful wilderness. Glide along tranquil cedar ridges and over hardwood filled hills that block out the hustle and bustle of the city. The trail is divided into three loops, offering two scenic overlooks and resting benches, great for all levels. • Located in Escanaba, trailhead at North 30th Street Days River Pathway The Days River Pathway proves to be a perennial favorite of locals and visitors alike. Skiers at Days River enjoy skiing through stands of tall pines and over rolling hills, with portions of the pathway running along or above the Days River. This unspoiled setting is only minutes from Gladstone and offers five stacked Nordic loops ranging in distance from 2.2 to 8.6 miles along with a 2 mile skating loop. • 3 miles northwest of Gladstone via US-2 and Days River Road Rapid River National Cross Country Ski Trail Located in the Hiawatha National Forest, Rapid River offers five loops of Nordic ski trails along with two skating loops. Considered by many to be one of the most beautiful trails in the U.P., skiers wind through a dense hardwood forest, climbing and traveling along dune ridges and dropping into lowland swamps, the varied terrain offers excellent opportunities for all levels of skiers with distances ranging from 1.2 to 10 miles. The trails intersect frequently providing many different options; maps are posted throughout the network as well as resting benches. There are also designated snowshoe trails. • Six miles north of Rapid River on US Highway 41 Snowmobiling Michigan is known by snowmobilers nationwide for its unique combination of abundant and dependable snow, exciting terrain and extensive trail network of more than 6,100 miles. All Upper Peninsula trails connect to Delta County, making it a great home base for your exploration of our winter playground. Delta County also connects with the Hiawatha National Forest, where snowmobilers will find over 3000 miles of road, abandoned railroad grades, and trails through hardwood stands, pine forest and frozen swampland awaiting them. GLADSTONE SPORTS PARK With winter just around the corner, Snowboarders and downhill skiers are anticipating hitting the slopes at the Gladstone Sports Park. Offering five runs and a terrain garden for snowboarders, along with breathtaking views of Little Bay de Noc, the Sports Park is a winter recreation favorite. In addition to the downhill runs, there are also three tubing runs, perfect for an afternoon filled with family fun. Warm up with a cup of hot cocoa in the chalet or enjoy a break from the action and gather around the new outdoor bonfire ring while enjoying our winter wonderland.
