‘The killers get real glad whenever they see the dark fellers killin’ a whale.’
This is the story of the orca, the largest of the dolphin family. Known as killer whales, the orcas’ relationship

directly from an oral storytelling tradition and was collected as part of a group of stories and poems by Roland Robinson. With
beautiful illustrations by Bronwyn Bancroft, this book explores the special relationship between orca and whaler.

AUSTRALIAN CHILDREN’S LAUREATE 2014-15
Jackie French
HarperCollins is delighted to congratulate Jackie French on her appointment to the role of
Australian Children’s Laureate for 2014-15.
Jackie French’s writing career has so far spanned 25 years, 248 wombats, over
140 books, 36 languages, and more than 60 awards in Australia and overseas.
Her books have sold almost 2.5 million copies globally.
‘Share a Story’ will be the primary philosophy behind Jackie’s two-year term. Three key beliefs will
inform her championing of children’s literature:
• Every child has the right to have a book to go to bed with - and a bed to read it in.
• Every child has the right to be taught to read, because without that they have lost the most vital social, educational and
professional communication in the modern world.
• Every child has the right to be guided to the books they need, and the books they will love, in schools, in libraries, and in a
safe place they can call a home.
French will take over from the inaugural Laureate – a position shared between Alison Lester and Boori Monty Pryor – from
February 2014.
PICTURE BOOK
‘Jackie French is one of Australia’s most amazing authors and we are thrilled to see her contribution to Australian storytelling
recognised,’ says HarperCollins chief executive officer James Kellow. ‘We are enormously proud to be her publisher and look forward to
introducing many more Australian children to Jackie’s wonderful and engaging range of books during her tenure.’

A Beach They Called Gallipoli
4+
Many books have been written about the battles of Gallipoli; the men who went to war and what they faced, the letters, and the tears
of those left behind.
But this is a book about Gallipoli, the place, and what happened on Gallipoli Beach from April - December 1915.
With beautiful and painterly illustrations by Bruce Whatley this is a book that explores the beach where the battles took place. In
focusing on the actual place of war, the book will also examine many other aspects of WW1, from the soldiers and the conditions
they fought in, to the civilians at home.
This is more than a book about ANZACS; this is a book about and for all of the nationalities who fought at that cove, not matter what
side they were on.

Once, there was a crooked man,
and he walked a crooked mile.
And they all lived together
in a little crooked house.
He found a crooked sixpence
beside a crooked stile.
He bought a crooked cat,
which found a crooked mouse.
But one day, it rained and rained and rained.
The river rose up and flowed swiftly —
One summer evening, the crooked man said, “Here we will not
be shaken to bits, or buried in sand, or washed away by the river.
Here we are safe, and here we will stay for ever and ever.”
