I just had my first baby, and although I am nursing I can’t lose weight. Is there any diet that can help me get rid New Mom in Westchester of those extra pounds? A. ? Drs. Dean Raffelock and Robert Rountree, authors of A Natural Guide to Pregnancy and Postpartum Health, say: “Contrary to popular belief, not all research shows a difference between nursing and bottle-feeding mothers when it comes to weight loss. Women are often told that they will lose pregnancy weight faster if they nurse, but some studies show that nursing mothers actually hold on to excess weight a bit longer, because they need that extra five or so pounds to make sufficient milk for their babies. “Nursing mothers need about 500 extra calories a day. The basic postpartum diet is a simple but healthy and wholesome one. It can be best summed up by the following guidelines: • Eat foods that supply your body with essential fatty acids, such as fresh salmon, nuts, and seeds. • Eat whole, preferably organic, foods—whole grains, fresh vegetables and fruits, unprocessed meats, nuts, and seeds, for example. • Avoid refined sugars and flour, during pregnancy and postpartum. • Eat foods that supply your body with antioxidants (mainly fresh fruits and vegetables). • Eat slowly and chew your food thoroughly. • Eat a source of nutrient-laden fiber, such as ground flaxseeds. “If you follow the postpartum diet guidelines, your body will tell you how much to eat and what foods to include. You won’t need to count calories or measure out servings to ensure that your baby is getting what he/she needs and that your nutrient stores are being built back up. Don’t try to increase your fat intake, but do pay attention to the type of fat you are eating.” If you would like to learn more on how a mother can maintain her well-being, before and after birth, as well as ensure her baby’s good health naturally, refer to A Natural Guide to Pregnancy and Postpartum Health, by Dean Raffelock and Robert Rountree. With busy mothers in mind, this book is designed so that you can benefit from each chapter individually or thumb through the index to target specific problems and solutions if you don’t have time to read the entire book or chapter.
