Selous and Ruaha
Selous and Ruaha game reserves offer fantastic game viewing during the months of June to
October. It is dry season and the wildlife is easier to spot as animals gather at water resources
and vegetation is thinner. Many lodges close from March through May in this region. What
makes this area worth a visit? The Selous lion, unlike their normally nocturnal brethren, display
unique (and convenient for those on safari) daytime hunting behaviour that is a fantastic
spectacle. The reserve covers an area of 54,600 km2 and has additional buffer zones. No
permanent human habitation or permanent structures are permitted inside the reserve,
creating an untouched wilderness for you to explore!
Some of the typical animals of the savannah (for example elephants, hippos, African Wild
Dog, Cape buffalo and crocodiles) can be found in this park in larger numbers than in any
other African game reserve or national park. Selous boasting the Rufiji River - which winds its
way majestically through the reserve all year round, offer wild, rugged plains home to
everything from hot volcanic springs, over 90 meter deep gorges and some lakes to vast
wooded escarpments and dry savannahs.
The most conspicuous birdlife is attracted to the sandbanks, lagoons, islands and channels
along the Rufiji River. A good way to enjoy the birdlife is on a boat safari. Migratory birds are
present from November to April. Some of the notable birds include Pel's fishing owl, African
spoonbill, White-headed vulture and the white-fronted bee-eater.
Ruaha offers spectacular birding with more than 571species and some of them are known to

be migrants from within and outside Africa. Migrating species from Europe, Asia, Australian
rim and Madagascar have been recorded in the park. Species of interest in the park include
Ruaha red-billed hornbill which is dominant in the area. Ruaha is a great place to see huge
herds of elephants, sable and African Wild Dog. The only perennial river in Ruaha National
Park is the Great Ruaha River. This water source plays a vital role on the long dry season and
is a great spot for game as well as bird viewing in the park.
Safari Itinerary
Day 1
Arrive Dar es Salaam International airport. On arrival you will be met and transferred to the
Serena Hotel Dar es Salaam for the night. Overnight on a bed and breakfast basis.

Day 2
Today you will be transferred to Dar es Salaam
Airport for your flight to Selous National Park.
You will be met on arrival and taken to Selous
Riverside Safari Camp. Spend 2 nights here on
a full board basis, two shared excursions per
day (boat, walk or game drive), tourism levy,
and transfers to / from Mtemere Airstrip.
Hidden amongst dense forest and on the
banks of the Rufiji River, Selous Riverside Safari
Camp provides the most breath-taking view
as dawn arises and a whole new adventure is
about to begin.
Overlooking the Rufiji River, Selous Riverside
Safari Camp consists of ten of the largest
and most luxurious tented chalets in
Tanzania. Its spacious tents have been
carefully placed to provide privacy and
blend into the natural surroundings,
overlooking the Rufiji River and its hippos
and crocodiles. All the tents are en-suite
and are luxuriously equipped with
comfortable beds, electricity, and their
own private verandas. To wash the dust
off after your game drive, each tent
provides an en-suite shower and toilet with
all the pleasures of hot and cold running
water.
Lavishly furnished, the camp provides comfort and luxury, but also a feel of arguably the
most untouched bush anywhere on the African horizon. Attention has been paid to every
detail to ensure you experience the true essence of an adventure safari of a lifetime.
With its most striking features, the diner and the deck provide you with the most sumptuous
African cuisine and sundowners. Be it a boat safari or a full day game drive, the pool deck

Day 4
You will be transferred to the airstrip for your flight to Ruaha National Park. On arrival be met
and transferred to Ruaha River Camp where you spend 2 nights on a full board basis, shared
guided morning and afternoon game drives (or full day) in open 4WD vehicle, airstrip
transfers, concession fees, tea, coffee, tourism levy, and laundry.
Ruaha River Lodge occupies a unique and privileged
position set around a series of rocky kopjes in a bend of the
Great Ruaha River, blending seamlessly into its surroundings
and affording views up and down the river. Game is drawn
to the river from the neighbouring hills and guests can
witness the great wildlife dramas unfold from the comfort
and protection of their self-contained natural stone and
thatch "banda". With resident hippos and crocs, there is
always plenty of action to watch and several incidents of
lion or leopard kills have been seen from the lodge.
The 24 individual stone and thatch bandas are equipped with either twin beds or a double
bed, an en-suite bathroom with shower, toilet and wash basin with solar-heated hot water,
and mosquito gauze on the
windows. Each room is
sited along the river bank
and has a large, private
veranda. All the rooms
have a lounge area with
sofa and armchair, coffee
table, and writing desk.
The camp is divided into
two separate restaurant
and bar areas; the hilltop
bar and the riverside bar.
Day 6
Transferred to the airstrip for your flight to Dar es Salaam. Connect your flight back home.

On day 6 board the flight straight to Zanzibar and spend two nights at Karafuu Beach Resort
& Spa.
One of the most luxurious hotels on the East Coast of
Zanzibar, Karafuu Beach Resort & Spa has been granted
an international five-star rating. The spacious and cool
reception area under makuti (open thatch), is impressive
and welcoming. Warm hospitality comes naturally to the
Swahili staff who are impeccably dressed in long, robed
uniforms. The hotel has all the facilities one could possibly
want and is named after the Swahili word for Cloves
which grown in abundance on Zanzibar.
The garden rooms are positioned at the top of the slope in the lush tropical gardens. They

includes theme evenings and different venues,

right on the beach. There is an amazing
choice of three restaurants: the main
restaurant with seaview terrace serving
generous buffets; the a la carte restaurant, Le
Grand Bleu, which serves spicy lobster and
other seafood; and the floating restaurant for a
lobster menu a la carte (upon request and tide
permitting). In addition, the Masai Village,
located within an African village perfectly
reproduced into Karafuu, opened just once or twice a week for Swahili dinners and folkloristic
dancers performances only.

Health Requirements - Yellow Fever inoculations are necessary if you are travelling from or via
another endemic area, or into South Africa afterwards. This must be done no later than 10
days prior to departure. Anti-malaria tablets are also necessary.
Visas – Are required by most citizens for entry into Tanzania. SA passport holders currently do
not need a visa for entering Tanzania. Visas can generally be organised on arrival. Please
