The new direction has five focus outcomes: It Is a New Day in Kansas Education •Kindergarten readiness. •Increasing graduation rates. •Increasing the percent of students completing credential or pursuing postsecondary education. •Each student will have an individual plan of student focused on career interest. •Social/emotional factors relative to student success are to be measured locally. With the input of more than 2,000 Kansans, the Kansas State Board of Education has set a new Vision for Kansas education where “Kansas leads the world in the success of each student.” Kansans are demanding higher standards in academic skills, as well as employability and citizenship skills, and the need to move away from a “one-size-fits-all” system that relies exclusively on state assessments from No Child Left Behind. This new vision for education calls for a more student-focused system that provides support and resources for individual success and will require everyone to work together to make it a reality. The faculty and staff of Tonganoxie are excited about this new vision for our students. Kansans have never backed down from a challenge and certainly not where our children are concerned. With your support, Kansans Can! Education in Kansas is undergoing a great transformation. With a new vision, the Kansas State Department 1 March 2016 District Newsletter Superintendent’s Corner Continued 7 7RQJDQR[LH8QLILHG6FKRRO'LVWULFW Calling All Incoming Kindergarteners! 3 March 2016 District Newsletter TES NEWS Model Class Each month, a class is selected for its outstanding Braves behavior. The February Model Class is Ms. Jones’s 2nd grade class. They received this award for their constant hard work at modeling Braves behavior (respect, responsible, safe) no matter where they are at in the building! Ms. Jones’s class poses for a picture below to humbly accept their award. Royals Reading Challenge On Friday, January 15, KayCee, the “W” guy from the Royals, visited TES to help kick off our Royals Reading Challenge. Kaycee shared how practice helped make the Royals winners and how practicing reading will help our students be successful readers as well. He read a Royals book about their climb to success which was well received by kids and adults at TES, as well. The atmosphere was awesome during the assembly, with superb Braves behavior, the “Wave,” and an enthusiastic MC, Nichole Gurwell, who helped get the crowd going with lots of student participation. ■ Random Acts of Kindness TES Staff are always on the lookout for students who exhibit exceptional behavior. A recent random act of kindness recipient is Connor Marxen from Mrs. Breedlove’s first grade class. Connor is a super helper and a great friend always! Great job Connor! ■ 4 March 2016 District Newsletter TES News Continued 7 7RQJDQR[LH8QLILHG6FKRRO'LVWULFW TES 4th & 5th Grade Honor Roll- Second Quarter Principal’s Honor Roll 4th Grade Teagan Allen Jordan Bauswell Laikyn Bennett Michael Bottary Marissa Bowlin Trinity Bridges Colton Brusven Journey Creten Keely Dohle Audrey Glynn Haley Halterman Cole Holmgren Taylor Igleheart Caroline Keene Jessica Kesinger McKenna Klamm Madeline Mahoney Trevor McGraw Caydence Moretine Bailey Poje Emory Sittner Reilly Smith Logan Spencer Connor Stean Aiden Van Middlesworth Lyric Yost 5th Grade Emma Aufdemberge Isabelle Barker Savannah Booker Andrew Bridges Brianna Carroll-Pollard Conner Cole Daniel Dorsey Jack Garren Eli Gilmore Sierra Innis Madison Kirby Brenan Kuzmic Mark Mast Cole Parker Lily Pruden Ally Rawlings Gabe Reischman Mia Schuck Carter Smith Ben Staples Cale Andersen Brianna Beets Lachlan Bond Brendan Bowlin Lilly Breuer Brendan Briley Abbigail Clarkson Alex Crowley Graham Foley Abigayle Groves Brayden Harber Isaiah Holthaus Sage Isaacs Paige Kelly Luke Kesinger Mya Lewis Kurt McCullough Jackson McWilliams Alyssa Novotney Alaina Rogers Keziah Slinkard Mariah Sneed Tyler Stanwix Daviana White Hayden York Honor Roll 4th Grade Marissa Caray Dalton Bennett Daisy Brown Jesus Delgado-Simental Shawn Elmer Elzy Folsom Carly Grant Presley Herrig Cayden Hunter Julianna Johnson Angelina Knipp Breeonna Lang Emiline Liebeno Alyssa Logan Mason McIntosh Tessa New Bethany Overmiller Van Payton Molly Rausch Lucy Rieke Addy Shepherd Maddy Smith Gannon Sonntag Conner Vestal Brandon Wilson Mariah Baker Amiya Bremer Molly Cullen Mallory Dick Brayden Folsom Cody Fraedrich Thomas Harbour Kinnley Hoffhines Allie Innis Addisyn Kelly Trenton Kraus Owen Leffert Jordyn Litchfield Allie Lowe Grant Mollett Shawn O’Brien Jayden Owens Lilly Pruitt Kade Riedel Stefany Rodriguez Gavin Shupe Makayla Smith Kiana Ventura Mason Vestal Colton Watson 5th Grade Katelyn Dunn Gabriel Altenhofen Josey Bartlett Mary Caenen Remington Cates Ethan Clubine Garrett Edwards Carter Gratton Haylee Greco Canyon Hendrickson Tye Holzworth Austin Johnson Madison Kendrick Aiden Lowe Ray Makin Paige Miller Kooper Murry Alex Perez Kylie Rightmire Logan Schmidt Travis Shepherd Brayson Thornton Erin Ulreich Cooper Waters Jenna Witt Jeremiah Williams Hope Addie Trent Barnes Wyatt Belobrajdic Gavin Carter Rorie Clemens Breanna Eastwood Braden Galyean Dylan Gray Wyatt Harris Wyatt Henley Cici Hunter Grant Kelly Laura Kinsch Alex Lungu Weston Mapes Alexa Moretine Gabriel Nester Gus Rieke Ann Robinson Miranda Serrano Emma Skelley Jacob Tuter Maris Vaughn Ethan Welsh Charles Thompson Zannidy Wright Madison Ziolo Remi Baldock Derick Barnes Katelyn Bothwell Amanda Cline Olivia Cline Katie Denholm Chloe Ferguson Kolby Gehl Elizabeth Graveman Rachael Kesinger Zaydia Kraus Andi Luna Corinne Morgan Robby Patterson Taylor Rantz Dalton Regehr Jonny Reynolds Gabe Seba Marie Smith Kylie Vandervoort 5 March 2016 District Newsletter TMS NEWS Silver Key Award Winner! Geography Bee Winner! Bryn Reed, TMS 8th grade student, is the recipient of a Silver Key Award for her Scholastics Arts and Writing Awards entry! This is a huge national contest and Bryn’s short story was recognized as being in the top 10% of all 7th-12th grade submissions in the category of fantasy/science fiction. The Scholastic Arts and Writing Awards program gives thousands of students throughout America the opportunity to broaden their creative horizons while earning local and national recognition. The objective is to foster the confidence of young artists and give them the opportunity to be recognized for their creative achievements by the world at large. The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards were founded in 1923, and have become the nation’s largest and longest running program of its kind. Congratulations, Bryn! Jacob Widhalm, an 8th grade student at TMS, won the school completion of the National Geographic Bee on January 21st and a chance at a $50,000 college scholarship. The runner-up was Mikah Carpenter, also an 8th grade student. The school Bee, at which students answered questions on geography, was the first round in the 28th annual National Geographic Bee. Thousands of schools around the United States and in the five U.S. territories are participating in the 2016 Bee. The school champions, including Jacob, will take a qualifying test; up to 100 of the top scorers on that test in each state will then be eligible to compete in their state Bee on April 1st, 2016. Kansas’s state Bee will be held at the Eisenhower Presidential Library in Abilene, Kansas. The National Geographic Society will provide an all-expenses paid trip to Washington, D.C., for the state winners to participate in the Bee national championship rounds May 6 March 2016 22-15, 2016. The first place national champion will receive a $50,000 college scholarship, a lifetime membership in the Society including a subscription to National Geographic magazine, and a National Geographic Expeditions trip to a national park in recognition of the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service. Best of luck to Jacob!! Pages in Topeka On February 10th, 8th graders Emmie Derzinski, Payton Lynn, Peyton Parker, and Nick Monteil went to the Kansas State House in Topeka and served as pages for Senator Tom Holland. Their day included paging during the Kansas Senate session, getting their picture taken in Governor Sam Brownback’s ceremonial chair, and going on a tour of the capitol dome. District Newsletter 7 7RQJDQR[LH8QLILHG6FKRRO'LVWULFW TMS News Continued TMS Book Challenge Spelling Bee On August 20, 2015, the TMS librarian, Ms. Bahm, challenged the TMS students and staff to read 2015 books in 2015. The challenge went from August 20 to December 31, 2015 (we finished by December 14th). Readers were required to completely read a book. They could read physical books or books on e-readers. Once a reader completed a book, they filled out a form in the library that was then displayed (see photos). Overall 66% of the students participated in the challenge (68% - 8th, 67% - 7th, 63% - 6th). Top readers were Lillianna Sanderson (8th) - 59 books, Ethan Larson (7th) - 55 books, and Lauren Bottary (6th) - 55 books. Of the staff that participated, Mr. Martin was the top with 10 books. Anyone submitting a form (one entry for each form) had their name entered into a drawing for prizes. Prizes were supplied using Scholastic dollars from the TMS book fair. This semester’s challenge from Ms. Bahm is for the school to read 500,000 pages before May 6th. Congratulations to the TMS Spelling Bee members and their accomplishments this year! TMS hosted the Kaw Valley League Spelling Bee in February. 96 spellers qualified from league schools to come and compete at TMS. Our spellers included sixth graders Marie Brockoff, Kaila Fountaine, Stacy Johnson, Maci Geiger, and Julia Perich; seventh graders Dajarrio White, Meghan Heskett, Mary Harbour, and Carly Overacker; and eighth graders Halie Baldwin, Bryn Reed, Marian Pray, Lauren Lawson, and Payton Lynn. Congratulations to Bryn Reed for her second place finish and to Halie Baldwin for winning first place. TMS took Julia Perich (6), Dajarrio White (7), and Halie Baldwin (8) to Leavenworth to compete in the Leavenworth County Spelling Bee. White placed 6th overall while Baldwin placed 2nd for her second year in a row. Baldwin went on to compete at the State Spelling Bee in Hays this past weekend and qualified for the finals. State finals include vocabulary knowledge as well as spelling accuracy. Baldwin competed strongly in the finals, finishing 16th in the state out of all 5-8 grade students combined. Finkbiner, son of Eric and Karen Finkbiner, Tonganoxie, KS, earned the rank of Finalist in the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Program. This is a great achievement, and Tonganoxie High School and USD464 are extremely proud of Spencer! About 1.5 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools entered the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2014 Preliminary sat/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (psat/ nmsqt®), which served as an initial screen of program entrants. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest scoring entrants in each state. The number of Semifinalists in a state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the national total of graduating seniors. To become a Finalist, the Semifinalist and his or her high school must submit a detailed scholarship application, in which they provide information about the Semifinalist’s academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, and honors and awards received. A Semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay, and earn sat® scores that confirm the student’s earlier performance on the qualifying test. From the approximately 16,000 Semifinalists, about 15,000 advance to the Finalist level. All National Merit Scholarship winners will be selected from this group of Finalists. Merit Scholar designees are selected on the basis of their skills, accomplishments, and potential for success in rigorous college studies, without regard to gender, race, ethnic origin, or religious preference. As a Finalist, Spencer will be considered for the 7,400 scholarships available through NMSC. Approximately half of the Finalists will be Merit Scholarship winners (Merit Scholar® awardees). Winners are chosen on the basis of their abilities, skills, and accomplishments— without regard to gender, race, ethnic origin, or religious preference. Scholarship recipients are the candidates judged to have the greatest potential for success in rigorous college studies and beyond. Congratulations, Spencer! Finkbiner Named Candidate in U.S. Presidential Scholars Program Spencer Finkbiner, a graduating senior at Tonganoxie High School, has been named one of more than 4,000 candidates in the 2016 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program. The candidates were selected from nearly 3.3 million students expected to 12 March 2016 graduate from U.S. high schools in the year 2016. Inclusion in the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program, now in its 52nd year, is one of the highest honors bestowed upon graduating high school seniors. Scholars are selected on the basis of superior academic and artistic achievements, leadership qualities, strong character, and involvement in community and school activities. The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964 by Executive Order of the President to recognize some of our nation’s most distinguished graduating seniors for their accomplishments in many areas: academic success, leadership, and service to school and community. It was expanded in 1979 to recognize students demonstrating exceptional scholarship and talent in the visual, creative, and performing arts. In 2015, the program was expanded once again to recognize students who demonstrate ability and accomplishment in career and technical fields. Annually, up to 161 U.S. Presidential Scholars are chosen from among that year’s senior class, representing excellence in education and the promise of greatness in America’s youth. All Scholars are invited to Washington, DC in June for the National Recognition Program, featuring various events and enrichment activities and culminating in the presentation of the Presidential Scholars Medallion during a White House-sponsored ceremony. A distinguished panel of educators will review these submissions and select 800 semifinalists in early April. The Commission on Presidential Scholars, a group of up to 32 eminent citizens appointed by the President, will select the finalists, and the U.S. Department of Education will announce the Scholars in May. Spencer is the son of Eric and Karen Finkbiner. Congratulations on this high honor, Spencer! District Newsletter 7 7RQJDQR[LH8QLILHG6FKRRO'LVWULFW THS News Continued Natalie Wolf Honored An outstanding senior has been named a Commended Student in the 2015 National Merit Scholarship Program. A Certificate of Commendation from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the program, was presented to this scholastically talented senior at THS earlier this year. The senior who was recognized was Natalie Wolf. About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2015 National Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2015 competition by taking the 2014 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). “The young men and women being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success,” commented a spokesperson for NMSC. “These students represent a valuable national resource: recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their school plays in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation. We hope that this recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success.” Congratulations, Natalie! ■ THS Novice Debate THS Debate State Success The Tonganoxie High School Debate Squad had a very successful trip to the 2 Speaker State Tournament in Independence. The Congress is an honors-only program for high school students who want to become physicians or go into the medical research fields. The purpose of this event is to honor, inspire, motivate, and direct the top students in the country who aspire to be physicians or medical scientists, to stay true to their dream and, after the event, to provide a path, plan, and resources to help them reach their goal. Mariah Dohle was nominated by Dr. Robert Darling, the Medical Director of the National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists to represent Kansas based on her academic achievement, leadership potential, and determination to serve humanity in the field of medicine. During the three-day Congress, Mariah will join students from across the country and hear Nobel Laureates and National Medal of Science Winners talk about leading medical research; be given advice from Ivy League and top medical school deans on what to expect in medical school; witness stories told by patients who are living medical miracles; be inspired by fellow teen medical science prodigies; and learn about cutting-edge advances and the future in medicine and medical technology. “This is a crucial time in America when we need more doctors and medical scientists who are even better prepared for a future that is changing exponentially,” said Richard Rossi, Executive Director, National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists. “Focused, bright, and determined students like Mariah Dohle are our future, and she deserves all the mentoring and guidance we can give her.” The Academy offers free services and programs to students who want to be physicians or go into medical science.
