Val is a truly wonderful and inspirational lady who simply wants to help others. She has a lifetime of service to our community and focuses her efforts in helping the neediest and most vulnerable. Val ha dedicated much of her life to being a passionate advocate for people in crisis, seeking to empower those around her, especially women experiencing depression, domestic violence, disadvantage and financial distress. Many Macarthur locals know Val as the driving force behind Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard in Camden, a local op shop in Camden that raises money to support the homeless and victims of domestic violence. It is an incredibly valuable and much needed service in our local community. I was really honoured to be able to recognise and thank Val on behalf of the Macarthur community for all that she does. Other award winners included: MPs Volunteer of the Year Award – Val Stewart Junior Award - Emily Backhouse Sports Award - Norman Hodge Senior Award - Joan Lewis Business Award - The Junction Works Tallowood Education Award - Fiona Barber Environment Award - Patricia (Trish) Smith Special Needs - Madeleine & Geoff Barnett 1 Emergency Management - Colin Spinks Long Term Commitment to Community Service - Steve Southam 8 I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a very happy, safe and merry Christmas. This year has been incredibly busy in Macarthur and I am very grateful for the opportunity to have met with so many local residents and community groups as well as attending many community events and celebrations The best part of my job is meeting all the wonderful community spirited people in our region and seeing all the great work and events that go on throughout the year that makes Macarthur such a great placed to live, work and raise a family. I am looking forward to the many opportunities 2016 will bring for Macarthur. I hope that you have a wonderful time with your family, friends and loved ones. Merry Christmas! The three key elements of the initiative are: Sprout—a mechanism to identify, foster and promote the best new ideas in the food and agribusiness arena; an online platform providing a single source for farmers’ most valued information; and a Digital Agriculture Service that will turn vast amounts of data into high performance farm management. Macarthur is the birthplace of Australian agriculture, and the innovative and pioneering spirit that made our region famous is epitomised by this bold new plan. Treasurer visits A2 Milk It was my great privilege to showcase one of the outstanding agricultural achievements of the Macarthur region, A2 Milk, which is putting Macarthur on the map internationally. I took the Treasurer, the Hon Scott Morrison MP, on a tour of their facility and discussed some of the great opportunities for Australian companies, like A2 Milk, that have opened up because of the Coalition Government’s historic Free Trade Agreements with South Korea, China and Japan. I have been working hard to make sure that this investment continues and recently announced $17.5m to upgrade Eagle Vale Drive to a 6 lane divided road. I welcomed the Minister for Major Projects, Paul Fletcher, to Macarthur to announce Stage 2 of Narellan Road which will be underway shortly. Once complete, this next stage will resolve many of the daily congestion problems faced by Macarthur commuters using Narellan Road to access the M5. Campbelltown Local Roads Package $200 million (Australian Government funded) Sutherland Heathcote No Jab No Pay Book Week 2015 From 1 January 2016 the Government’s No Jab No Pay policy will come into effect. This means that families with children who are not immunised, and do not have a medical exemption, will no longer be eligible to receive Child Care Rebate and Child Care Benefit payments, as well as no longer being eligible to receive the Family Tax Benefit Part A supplement. Book Week was an amazing success across Macarthur this year with fun character parades, special presentations and events as well as tons of fun activities to promote literacy and reading in our local schools. It was a real joy to take part in the many fun celebrations. Reading is such an important part of developing great literacy and communication skills. Over the past three years I have been encouraging our local kindergarten students to get into reading by donating over 5,000 books to Kindy kids across Macarthur, much to their delight. Christmas in Narellan and Light Up Camden were a great success with record crowds this year. While Christmas is a joyous time to celebrate with friends, family and loved ones, it can also be a very difficult time of year for families who are struggling financially, the homeless and older people living alone. I encourage you to get involved in the many local community services or consider donating to any of the local charities such as Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard, St Vincent’s De Paul, Lifeline and the Salvation Army, to name but a few.
