TURKEY

Known as “Green Bursa”, this province stands on the lower slopes of Uludag (Mount Olympos of Mysia, 2543 m) in the

Olıve gardens are very famous in this village and you can see

ULUDAG
This ski center 36 km south of Bursa and 200 km from
Istanbul (by car ferry) is accessible along a good asphalt
road or by cable-car. The ski area lies between 1800-2500
meters and the best season is from November to April. A
wide range of accommodation is available in hotels, family
chalets and apres ski facilities. At the resort there are chairlifts, ski-lifts, slalom and giant slalom courses, beginner’s
slopes, ice skating, and a small hospital. The total lenght
of ski tracks is about 20 km, and the longest one is about
2,000 meters. Skis, equipment, and instructors are available
for hire. Total bed capacity is over 4,500. There are 27 hotels, 15 of which are privately owned.

ABANT - SAPANCA
ABANT INFORMATION
Bolu is approximately 200 km from Istanbul and
is famous for its verdant black pine and scots pine trees
forests (also oak, willow, hazelnut trees) and hot springs.
Lake Abant is located about 40 km from Bolu center and
is at an altitude of around 1320 meters. The lake is a fresh
water lake with an area of about 1.28 square kilometers
formed as a result of a great landslide. The lake is under
environmental protection as there is a special species of
brook trout called Salmo trutta abanticus, but you may
fish in the lake for a fee. The forests around the lake offer
an ideal habitat for deer and other wildlife. Another place
of interest in the Bolu/Abant area is the Yedigoller (Seven
Lakes) National Park, and Golcuk, an artificial lake 11 kms
south of this. You may also visit Kartalkaya in the Koroglu
Mountains which is a winter ski resort in Turkey, but also
beautiful in the summer. 53 kilometers from Bolu is a place
called Konuralp, which was an ancient city, where you can
see Roman and Byzantine art and ruins.
SAPANCA INFORMATION
Sapanca Lake is located on a tectonic hole, which
is situated between Izmit Bay and Adapazari Meadow and
runs parallel to Iznik Lake. The forest area near to the coast
of Lake Sapanca‘s south slopes has been heavily damaged
and has left space for new kinds of small trees like maquis. Nowadays there are no more significant forest areas
surrounding Lake Sapanca. Flow volumes of the streams,
which feed the Lake are very low and many of them have
dried up.
The catchment area of Lake Sapanca - about 251 sq. km
[km²] - is surrounded by mountains in the south and small
hills in the north. Water is taken from the Lake for domestic
and industrial needs.
Lake Sapanca is one of the few lakes in Turkey, which provides drinking water, but it is exposed to heavy urbanization because of its natural beauty and its proximity to the
metropolitan Istanbul. Natural forest lands in catchment
areas have been vanishing quickly. There is pollution from
highways near the coast and also from waste water from
settlement areas around the lake. A negative effect on the
trophic level of the lake has been observed.
Until now heavy pollution has not been observed in the
lake, but nevertheless dumping of waste water from domestic areas should be prevented and no licenses should
be given to factories.
The region around Sapanca has become very important for
day trips and weekend vacations with its charming natural
beauty.

TRABZON INFORMATION
The city is mostly situated on a table like promontory above the harbor. The citadel is one of the oldest remains, and the first thing you will notice when entering Trabzon, is a well-preserved 13th century Byzantine Church,
now restored as the Ayasofya Museum. The walls of this church are decorated with frescoes which are the finest examples of Byzantine craftsmanship. The Fatih Mosque in the city was once a Byzantine church. Trabzon is very richly
adorned with sightseeing areas and precious remains from the Byzantine period. On the western slopes of the Boztepe hill, is “the Boztepe Park” with a beautiful view of the city. In the village of Surmene, to the east of Trabzon, is
a fascinating 19th century mansion, known as the Kastel. There are many opportunities in Trabzon to cover all tastes.
For example the Erikbeli and Karadag meadows, south of Akcaabat, are quite good hiking and picnicking areas.
UZUNGOL INFORMATION
It is a popular tourist destination. Uzungöl is located in the province of Trabzon, about 90km from the city of
Trabzon and 70km southeast of Rize. On its shore is Uzungöl village with traditional wooden houses as well as modern hotels, restaurants and recreational facilities. The valley is dominated by the two minarets of the mosque on the
shores of the lake. The lake is about 1km long, 0.5km wide and the average depth is 15m. Uzungöl lies at an altitude
of 1090m in the middle of the valley surrounded by mountains. The surrounding mountains are mostly covered with
mixed forests. In the mountains is the number of mountain lakes and streams. Due to torrential rainfall the surroundigns of Uzungöl is one of the greenest areas of Turkey . More than 60 species of local plants are endemic. The area
around Uzungöl is a popular destination for hiking and climbing.
Several major tourist attractions can be mentioned in the town’s surroundings, like Tortue Waterfall about 114 km,
Zilkale Castle about 68 km, Sümela Monastery about 54 km, Kaçkar Mountains about 69 km, Kaymaklı Monastery
about 61 km
RIZE –AYDER INFORMATION
Turkish people are well known for their thirst for tea and now a tea company is looking to take advantage by
launching a travel trend: tea tourism. The first of such tours takes off for northern Turkey this summer. Visitors will have
a day of picking tea leaves and then the opportunity to observe closely as leaves are made ready for our pots.
The 45-minute uphill walk to the Ayder Plateau will probably leave many complaining. But the high oxygen levels

down the mountains, you may wish you had asked your doctor for some pills to calm you down. But once you get past
that fear and reach your destination, where you will sip freshly brewed tea and nibble on Rize’s special sesame-studded simit bread, you will wish you never had to leave.
