We will have our usual Tech and Judging school sessions. There will also be a Road tour in May to the Tank Restoration Facility in Nokesville, VA. The car show at Sully Plantation is on again for the 10th of September, if Jim can get the weather right. We will have our Chapter judging meet, at the McCagh Farm in Cumberland, MD. August 12th& 13th. If you have never attended an event at the Farm, mark your calendar it is great fun. You can check all the activities and dates at the MAC web site. I hope everyone has renewed their membership for 2016. If you did, you should have received your MAC membership card and window stickers. As usual when you try something new there are a few problems. Please check your membership number and your renewal date. If incorrect, I have the correct information from the Newcomb’s our membership Managers. The final details are being worked out for the MAC Calendar and the calendar will be going out to the members that ordered them shortly. There will be a few calendars for sale at MAC events. I would like to thank Bob, Martha and their daughter Kym for putting the calendar together, Great job. Please remember to check your e-mail; Jim Board does a good job of keeping the membership informed of what is happening in the MAC. Also, visit the Face Book page there are a lot of pictures posted there. Hope to see you at a MAC. Event this year. MAC Chairman, Jerry Duffey 6 Signal Seeker’s Editor’s Message by Jim Hofferbert As I promised in closing out the last Signal Seeker, this year will be another stellar year. Jerry Duffey and Jim Board have scheduled fantastic events again. Please study the event calendar for 2016 and set aside the dates for our get to gathers. 2016 has already seen the Fun in the Sun Florida regional. The best part of this event was the missing out on the major blizzard that hit the Mid-Atlantic States, especially Washington D.C. However, getting home was delayed a day or two for many of us. The cars and friends made it all worthwhile. Upcoming is the Judges Training Retreat in Dallas, TX. March 10-13 will see many of the most knowledgeable minds in our hobby teaching those of us wanting to learn. This event is not offered every year; and, if you have not attended I strongly recommend taking advantage of the next opportunity. The retreat is offered in two sessions and spots fill up fast. More on this event in the next issue. Please take note of our first meet for 2016. On April 2nd we will meet at Klick Lewis for a tech session that promises to kick off the year with a bang. Rick Risser is always a great host guaranteeing great fun. See you all there. Plenty of fun, not so much sun. 7 Don’t let the tropical setting fool you. The Florida regional was cold, windy and wet. Still fun! National Corvette Museum Ambassador’s Report Jim Board (8093) Greetings MAC Members! The NCM has something completely new for visitors underway this year. They are pulling back the curtain and letting visitors see the museum stars being preserved and maintained, and even allow visitors to learn from an expert on how it is done. Called the Maintenance and Preservation Area (MPA), the NCM is remodeling a portion of the museum that will be used to provide care and maintenance of the museum’s car collection. Visitors will have the opportunity to watch work in progress, and at designated times interact and ask questions about the work. The new MPA will also provide a location for seminars and classes on car care, maintenance or basic mechanics, skills that can be lost when a new generation takes responsibility for classic Corvettes owned by families outside of the museum. Want to help with this NCM effort? They have started a Go Fund Me campaign for donations. Please visit https://www.gofundme.com/preservecorvette 2016 is shaping up to be a busy year for the NCM. There are too many events to mention them all here, but I’ll give you some of the highlights; the High Performance Driving Experience (HPDE) will be held at the NCM Motorsports Park on April 28-29 and again August 27-28. The HPDE will be held closer to MAC at Virginia International Raceway on June 27-28. You can visit the amazing Biltmore Estate and experience the world famous Tail of the Dragon with fellow Corvette enthusiasts on May 1-4. The NCM will host the C4 Gathering on May 12-14. And, the NCM 22nd Anniversary will be celebrated on September 1-3 at the museum. Don’t miss out on any of the fun. Current information on NCM events and much more can always be found at the NCM website. http://www.corvettemuseum.org/ 8 A "Back on the Road Again" hello to everyone. The Central PA Tour will gather in Bethlehem, PA Monday July 11th. We’ll kick off the tour on the 12th with a tour bus trip to the 911 Memorial and Museum leaving Bethlehem at 8 AM. I estimate the cost will be in the $35 per person range for other than retired military veterans. Retired military will be less. We will return to the Bethlehem hotel to stay overnight Tuesday July 12th. We’ll be “back on the road again” in our cars from Bethlehem, PA Wednesday July 13th, probably by 7:30 AM since that first day will be a busy one. The plan for rest of the Tour, subject to change, is as follows: Wednesday July 13: We’ll have an approximate 2 hour drive to West Point where we’ll tour the US Military Academy by bus. We will lunch at the American Culinary Institute; a 3 course lunch “experience” at $36 plusplus and also tour the Institute itself. Then a short trip up the Hudson River to tour the Vanderbilt National Historic Site in Hyde Park to end the day. This will be a busy day with not much driving but we will have to stay on schedule. I should note that on a previous Road Tour we visited the Roosevelt home in Hyde Park but not the Vanderbilt. The Rhinebeck Aerodrome in Rhinebeck NY (a few miles further north) is an alternative to the Vanderbilt Mansion and Hyde Park but you should know there are no air shows during the week. Besides, the ladies may not have much interest in seeing old planes. We will overnight in Poughkeepsie. Thursday July 14 will be a scenic driving day. We’ll travel through the Catskills, Cooperstown, NY area and the Adirondack Mountains. Your group could decide to visit any of the many scenic sites along our route or even Cooperstown. But I expect there will be many people in the Cooperstown area – there are baseball tournaments throughout the summer in that area with lots of local traffic. Friday July 15th we’ll travel more Adirondack scenic roads to Plattsburgh, NY crossing Lake Champlain by ferry (a 15 minute trip costing $10 a car) on our way to Waterbury, VT for lunch (place TBD according to Bill’s Rule) and a tour of Ben and Jerry’s (Ice Cream!). We will overnight in the Killington-Rutland, VT area. Saturday July 16th we head to the Last Night Out city of Windsor, CT. But first we will tour historic sites in Hartford, CT with the South East Tour led by Don and Anne Warmuth. Details on that day have not been finalized at this point but it should be a great time. When the Warmuths lived in Hartford, Anne conducted tours of the Hartford sites (to include Mark Twain historic points) so this should be a good day. Sunday we'll travel with all Road Tours making up the 2016 National Road Tour. Scott and Kay Sinclair plan for us to drive Thomson Speedway Motorsports Park on the way to a 3 PM Road Tour Parade arrival in Warrick, RI And last: We fully understand and acknowledge that while it is only a day trip from Central PA to Rhode Island the above plan has us on the road for 4 ½ days including the Sunday portion led by Scott and Kay. As we’ve said before: It is not about our destination but it is about the journey – where we go, what we see, the things we do, the people we meet and the places we eat. Life is a Highway. Please note the following: You will receive the hotel information in your Road Tour registration confirmation letter from Scott Sinclair. The National Road Tour registration fee will not include the costs of events unique to Central PA tour. Where possible we have arranged the events so that you can pay individually on site. However that is not practical for events such as the group bus tours. For those we collect the cost from you in advance. We hope you decide to join the 2016 Central PA Road Tour. My wife, Diane, was snowed in for two days before she could get plowed out. In the meantime I’m stuck in FL enjoying a polo match. Not part of the regional The show field Kaye and Tom Bulluck’s ’72 Bow Tie Several Mac members were present to have their cars judged and to to judge. The field for flight judging was sparce this year, but there were still many Corvettes to enjoy. One anomoly that caught the attention of many was the markings on T top bag. Notice the logo! The swap meet covered Because of the wind. 13 Tom Doi intensly OJ ing Chrysler didn’t have a T top in ‘74 No deduction taken. 14 11/18/15 MODIFYING A C2 ASHTRAY DOOR KNOB (To Allow It to Be Removed and Reinstalled Without Damaging It or the Ashtray Door) BY ED SZELIGA All C2s have a chrome tapered knob mounted to the top of the brushed aluminum sliding ashtray door. This knob is secured with two pins that are peened over on the reverse side of the door. If the door has to be removed the peened pins on the knob have to be ground off which essentially requires the purchase and installation of a new knob. The replacement knob is designed to be secured in the same manner as the original, i.e., peening two pins that are cast as a part of the knob. The problem is that the door has to be installed in the console and the console has to be turned upside down with the knob in place in order to peen the pins. There is a risk of: a) damaging the door, b) damaging the console, and c) not peening the pins tight enough to produce a snug fit. An alternative to peening the pins is to modify the chrome knob so it can be secured with small screws. Screws provide for easy, risk free installation and if necessary, non-destructive removal of the knob and subsequent reuse. The following are descriptions of two approaches to modifying the chrome knob to accept screws that was provided to me by a mechanically talented family member. The tapered chrome knob was an interesting piece to work on. First I made a small fixture to hold it securely and could be tightened in a vise. I made my fixture from a piece of Azec plastic trim I had laying around but you could make a fixture with a lot of different materials including a hard wood. My objective was to select a material for the fixture that would not mar the chrome finish on the knob. With the fixture and knob firmly secured I was then able to proceed with the drilling and running a tap through the holes. The two outer pins or studs are 0.116” diameter spaced 0.675” apart. I used a #2-56 tap drill which is #50 (0.0700”) to drill holes 0.250” deep down through the center of the pins and into the body of the tapered chrome handle. Then I ran a #2-56 bottom tap, which has an outside diameter of 0.086”, down the holes I just drilled. The drilling and taping processes produced a small bur on the pins that needed to be filed off in order for the pins to fit smoothly into the pre-drilled holes in the sliding ashtray door. While the above approach worked just fine there is another similar approach to the drilling process. You could grind off the two pins and then drill and tap two holes #4-40 where the pins used to be located. You have to grind off the pins because a #4-40 screw has an OD of 0.112” which is only 4 thousandths of an inch smaller than the pins. One approach does not necessarily seem better than the other but I think drilling and tapping into and through the pins might be a bit easier than grinding off the pins and then drilling and tapping into the handle. The two pics below show the back side of the same sliding door with screws installed in place of the original pins. The screw heads are small enough so they do not interfere with the lip of the ashtray when everything is installed in the car. The screws are not visible when everything is installed in the car so I suspect that there is little risk of losing points during judging because of this modification. However just the notion of modifying an original part or a replacement as described above might be objectionable to some which I can understand and appreciate. 15 MAC spark plug wire oddity. By Gary Seymour During the judging of my car’s rolling chassis on October 20, 2015 at Klick Lewis Chevrolet, the judges questioned the finish of the right spark plug wire bracket on the rear of the block just above the bell housing. There was no reference in the 67 judging manual. After the event, I searched my extensive picture files on my computer and found a picture of a survivor 67 327 motor that showed the brackets. The survivor motor showed the LH bracket as black (paint), the RH bracket as cad/zinc plated and both brackets being held with a cad/zinc plated hex screw. Fortunately, my car had that setup. During the discussion of the brackets with the judges at the meet, we agreed the LH black bracket was special to the small block Corvette when shielding was used and the RH spark plug wire holder was used on passenger cars too and not needed to hold shielding in place. Picture below giving credit to who owns the motor. 16 Contributed by Dave Kitch 20 Documentation Request - Details about a Nassau Blue Hill Climb and SCCA Racer. From Tom Dingman, NCRS member 4889. There are additional stories and details from after 1969, but here I focus on my car’s the first three years in Pennsylvania. Please call or write to me with any information you might recall about my Corvette, or other race cars sold new by Dankel Chevrolet in Allentown, PA. My phone is (810) 338 0307 and my e-mail is [email protected] Thanks! My story covers a 1965 Corvette Coupe and some really nice people from your area. I’ve been very lucky to have access to these very special folks. They were the owners and drivers of my Nassau blue Corvette. Meeting them and visiting in their home state of Pennsylvania over the past year has been as much fun as going back in time and meeting with old pals from the 1960s. First, I must thank some friends who helped in a big way to unearth the details you are about to read. Dan Adie, a fellow NCRS member known to some of you, located the car in Canada and dug up the names of the first, second and third owners months before I bought it. My research role included lunches, dinners and a few beers; Then some newspaper clippings and generous photo sharing from Sam Armstrong. Pennsylvania hill climbing and SCCA racing photos have come from Sam and his wife Kathy. They helped me to find another new friend, Jim Dantzer. Jim and his wife Elsie provided some more photos, many event results, and even a couple of Corvette parts from back in the day. Jim tells me that Tom Morgan, now deceased, was a hill climber in Pennsylvania. Tom raced a Jaguar XKE prior to May, 1965 and apparently had a passion for being recognized. During this time, Jim Dantzer bought a new 1964 Corvette with a significant list of options. He demonstrated the car’s power and handling to Tom Morgan and (long story short) Tom became the owner of a new 1965 Corvette with the 425 HP 396 engine. It seems possible, if not likely, that Tom Morgan’s new car was gifted with an M22 transmission by GM. The second and third owners both say this was the case. See more about that below, including my references to Alan Colvin’s articles*. To get his new Corvette, Tom Morgan joined Jim as a customer at Dankel Chevrolet in Allentown, PA. Jim says that Tom was influenced by the Parts Manager there, Mr. Bobby Eck. Those of you who remember him might know that 21 he was “tuned in” to the heavy duty parts that GM was selling to support racing. This was a time when (at least according to the upper management) GM was not involved in racing. Mr. Eck is deceased also. If you happen to remember Dankel’s Parts Dept., and can speculate how Mr. Eck kept up with the latest special offerings from Chevrolet, please contact me. I have obtained a few later GM Chevrolet documents, but nothing that specifically lists 1965-1966 high performance part numbers. The more recent GM performance catalogs came along later. Jim Dantzer joined Tom Morgan as a co-driver (both used the ’65 coupe) and helped with parts installation and tuning on the 396. Jim tells me he knows the exact date that aluminum heads (from Dankel Chevrolet) were installed on the ’65 Corvette, because the 1966 Indy 500 was on the radio in Morgan’s garage that day. Later, in the 1968 PHA hill climbs, Jim drove Harold Keck’s 427 Cobra. The salesman who sold my car over fifty years ago was named Bob Heinly. Bob and I have talked by telephone recently. He has solid memories of his days at Dankel Chevrolet. He estimates they sold about six Corvettes each year during the sixties. The dealership was sold but the owners maintain a facility at the same address. Outten Chevrolet now operates at 1701 West Tilghman street in Allentown. If you know of other Dankel cars from the sixties, and happen to know how familiar the folks at Dankel were with special performance options, please contact me. I know of four significant Camaros that were delivered to Dankel Chevrolet. Any related information would be of interest to me! Dankel Chevrolet sales items and Dankel documents are also of interest! Second owner Sam Armstrong owned and drove my Corvette for the 1968 PHA hill climb series. The transaction to purchase from Morgan was completed at Dankel Chevrolet in 1967. Sam traded his maroon B/P Corvette and Morgan bought a 1968 Camaro. Mr. Morgan followed up with an order for a 1969 Camaro later. I presume the 1968 Camaro was traded back to Dankel, but I am not sure of this. Sam Armstrong is quite sure the Corvette arrived new in Allentown with an M22 transmission. I have read Mr. Alan Colvin’s articles* about the 1965 cars with M22s. Colvin indicates M22 was not a window sticker option, but an “under the table” option supplied to a selected few. I cannot ask the first owner about this, but Jim Danzter says it is quite possible. He seems sure that Tom Morgan never had to change the transmission during his two years of hill climbing. 22 Again, if you have comments on the above, please contact me. I am most interested in the M22 possibility. However, at this point, I only have what people have related to me. Finding the original transmission, or just seeing photos of it, would be a big deal… Photo 1. An early hill climb shot of Tom Morgan’s 1965 Coupe. Note the number 24 and the factory knock off wheels. This car is also pictured in an early video posted on PHA’s history related Facebook page. Photo 2. Second Owner Sam Armstong with the 1965 racer. 23 During Sam Armstrong’s ownership, there was PHA hill climbing and some SCCA racing in PA and Maryland. Sam sold the car for $3000 in 1969. The third owner was Mike Oleyar, who was looking to replace his green wrecked 1965 396 coupe. More on that will have to wait until chapter two of this article… If you have ever seen an M22 main case with no casting number and a date code of April 15th, or if you can make a guess as to where Mike Oleyar’s racing spares went, please do give me a call! THANKS VERY MUCH. Here you can see the three colors worn by my Corvette at different times. The above article is focused only on the time when the car was still the original Nassau Blue. Mike Oleyar added the mustard orange 1970 MGB color, and the yellow was sprayed in Kingston Ontario, Canada for owner number five. All three colors, and some flares, were stripped off in late 2014, and the body has just been repainted… Nassau blue. 25 Title: Purchased from a Chevy dealer back in the day by Bill Sangrey Receipt for an "over the counter" 327/365 HP Corvette engine.
