It is Soul Patrol’s ownership of BOTH it’s content and technology infrastructure that makes it unique. Most
sites own and manage their own content. We also manage the underlying technology infrastructure (servers,
telecommunications links and programming) that makes the presentation of the content possible. Because of
our long experience in the world of Data Processing, Mike and I feel that it’s an ABSOLUTE REQUIREMENT
to use state of the art technology (hardware and software) components, and that is what we have purchased
for the site. We also have developed a state of the art & flexible architecture to deploy those components.
This is what gives us the capability to do things (providing access to a huge online data base, provisioning an
internet radio station, bi-weekly newsletter, a monthly magazine, etc) and provisioning of various online and

Van McCoy was a musical genius, with over 700 music copyrights to his credit, as writer or cowriter. Much than just the man who gave the Hustle to the world. He was a prolific composer,
arranger, producer, pianist and singer in his short 39 years.

Open Up My Heart Foundation
Open Up My Heart, Inc, a non-profit foundation founded by Nina Dawne-Williams, Esquire. The foundation
will raise funds to assist the neediest victims (i.e., the janitors, couriers, temporary workers, cooks) of the
9/11 attacks. In a special donation, The Mighty, Mighty Dells re-recorded "Open Up My Heart," with new
artists, and will contribute a portion of the sales from the CD, to this effort. Proceeds from the Soul-Patrol
Convention will be donated to the Open Up My Heart Foundation. Last year Soul-Patrol was the largest
single donor to the Open Up My Heart Foundation and this year our objective is increase our contribution,
with YOUR help.

Billy Paul
The amazing Mr. Paul began getting national recognition as a young man, and soon appeared in concert
with such artists as Charlie Parker, Dinah Washington, Nina Simone, Miles Davis, the Impressions, Sammy
Davis and Roberta Flack. Nancy Wilson was so impressed with a track off his debut album that she recorded
it herself.
Billy formed a trio and cut his first record, "Why Am I" for Jubilee Records before being drafted into the
Armed Services. After his release from the service came a quick stop at the New Dawn Label, and a brief
stand in for one of the Blue Notes with Harold Melvin. His first Philly album, "Feeling Good At The Cadillac
Club" combined Billy Paul and Gamble/Huff produced tunes, and was released on the Gamble Label. This
jazz L.P. was followed by one more commercial release "Ebony Woman", released on the Gamble & Huff
Neptune label. Still later, Going East, Billy's first album released on the Philadelphia International Label, set
him further into the commercial groove. However, it was with his second album that everything broke loose in
his career. 360 Degrees Of Billy Paul with the ensuing single "Me And Mrs. Jones" selling over two million
copies alone, placed Billy's name on the lips of every couple in love. The gold album and platinum single
broke the artist on world charts, including Britain where the single entered the top five.
I know that all of you "old heads" out there remember Billy all too well from his 1973 GRAMMY AWARD
WINNING smash hit song..."Me and Mrs. Jones".
Billy and his wife have been a member of our family here on Soul-Patrol for quite a while, sharing their
knowledge with all of us and taking in ALL of the conversation that has been taking place on Soul-Patrol.
When I first met with them several years ago at their home here right outside of Philadelphia, they welcomed
me as if I were a long lost family member. You all can't imagine how that made me feel....:)

Badal Roy
Badal Roy (born: Amerendra Roy Choudhury) is one of the world's leading tabla players. Although his
musical roots reflect the influence of Indian classical music, Roy has taken the Indian hand drum from its

traditional role and placed it in the realm of jazz and improvisational music. In addition to recording with John
McLaughlin and the late Miles Davis, Roy has performed with such stellar jazz and world music players as
Herbie Mann, Dave Leibman, Don Cherry, Pharoah Sanders, Dizzy Gillespie, Lonnie Liston Smith, Andreas
Vollenweider, and Yoko Ono. Since 1988, Roy has been a member of Ornette Coleman's Prime Time. A
native of Pakistan, Roy emigrated to the United States in 1968, to seek his fortune as a musician. Arriving in
New York with eight dollars and his tabla, he quickly attracted attention with his virtuosic playing. Although he
found a job as a busboy and waiter at an Indian restaurant, he caused a sensation when he began
performing for customers. The invitation to record with Miles Davis followed soon afterwards. Since the mid'90s, Roy has collaborated with Brazilian guitar duo Duofel.

Freddie Scott has had 2 #1 Hits in a music career spanning, 4 decades! #1 Hits-'Hey Girl', 'Are You Lonely

Hooks, and many more. A signature songwriter,(performer), for Bert Burns, Columbia and Colpix, Freddie
Scott has worked with the Biggest names in music: Aretha Franklin, Erma Franklin, Van Morrison, Gamble
and Huff, Carole King, Alicia Keys, Kool and The Gang Barry White, The Jive 5, The O'Jays, And More...
Lonnie Liston Smith
The music of Lonnie Liston Smith played in it's entirety at times at parties. It contained all of the elements
that Funkateers were looking for in music at that time. The groove was kickin, thought provoking, sensual,
"kozmic" and SLAMMIN all at the same time. It seems to me that Lonnie Liston Smith represents perhaps,
the high point for FUNK in the 70's because it really does combine all of the key elements wraped in a very
"afrocentric" package, that was very popular at the time.
During the mid 70’s Lonnie Smith & The Comic Echoes made two albums that for Funkateers of that time
period will always be regarded as "bookends". Pair this one up with the music of Gil Scot-Heron, Roy Ayres,
Grover Washington Jr. and others from the same timeframe and this is about as close as jazz gets to
reconnecting with a massive Black audience. Too bad, for Black people and Black music that things didn't
continue in this vein
Howard Tate
The saga of Howard Tate is, in the truest sense of the word, inspirational. Spanning sixty tumultuous years;
rich with triumph and tragedy, popular acclaim and bitter betrayal, it is, simply put, the stuff of legend.
If that name rings a familiar bell in the back of your brain, give yourself credit for a bit of canny bluesology.
Those who know their stuff will recall that Tate was one of the brightest lights of the mid-to-late Sixties R&B
scene, a golden age for young, ambitious artists just emerging from the giant shadows cast by the great
originators. Even among such conspicuous competitors as Otis and Percy and Wilson, Tate stood out. It was
a reputation due in large part to an incendiary live show, his landmark 1967 debut album, Get It While You
Can and a creative partnership with producer and songwriter Jerry Ragovoy, the man behind such blues and
R&B perennials as "Time Is On My Side," "Piece Of My Heart" and scores of others.
It is here that Howard Tate's story takes a dark and dangerous turn, tinged by self-destruction and tragedy.
Returning to his native Philadelphia, he began selling insurance to support his wife and six children, one of
whom - a thirteen year old daughter - perished in a house fire in 1976. The overwhelming grief of his loss
brought his world down around him, ending his 19-year marriage and eventually robbing Tate of his very
purpose for living. A slow-motion descent into drugs and alcohol landed him on the mean streets of his
hometown, where he lived hand to mouth until, in 1994, he reached bottom and found God waiting for him
there.

Last year Howard Tate began an amazing "comeback" and the result is Rediscovered, and rarely has an
album been more aptly titled. With such consummately crafted and passionately performed standouts as the
rousing opener, "Mama Was Right"; the decidedly funky "Organic Love (100% Natural)," the emotionally
resonant "All I Know Is The Way I Feel," and Tate's unforgettable rendition of the Prince classic "Kiss,"
Rediscovered is nothing less than the re-introduction of classic R&B artistry for a whole new generation.

This funk -disco group was formed by Jeff Lane in Brooklyn during the '70s. They started in 1972 as the King
Davis House Rockers, and later were called the Brooklyn Trucking Express. The roster consisted of
saxophonist/vocalist Bill Risbrook, percussionist Dennis Rowe, guitarist Rick Thompson, saxophonist/flutist
Carlos Ward, keyboardist Michael Jones (Kashif), lead guitarist/vocalist Wesley Hall, drummer Leslie Ming,
bassist, organist and vocalist Louis Risbrook, and vocalist Barbara Joyce Lomas. Their debut LP Do it ('Til
You're Satisfied) had two number-one R&B and Top Ten pop hits in the title cut and "Express." Subsequent
LPs yielded two more R&B Top Ten singles, "Give It What You Got/Peace Pipe" in 1975 and "Can't Stop
Groovin' Now, Wanna Do It Some More" in 1976. After 1977's "Shout It Out," which cracked the R&B Top 20
(number 12), the group slumped with the album Shout! They were off the charts until 1980. They made a
slight comeback that year with B.T. Express 1980, though only the single "Give Up the Funk (Let's Dance)"
made it into the Top 40 (number 24).
Marvelettes
I love the Marvelettes, they are a musical delight! The first Motown female group with 3 lead singers: Gladys,
Wanda and later Anne. As a child, I vividly remember "Don't Mess With Bill" and "My Baby Must Be a
Magician." But when it came to buying their records, by 1969, Motown surely wasn't releasing too much by
them. In the summer of 1970, while visiting my family in Virginia, I went to Murphy's (a store similar to
Woolworth's). I got at 3 for $1, "My Baby Must Be A Magician," Martha's "Honey Chile" and the Supremes
"Forever Came Today." They were all cut outs (remainders). On a later visit to Virginia, in 1970 and '71, I do
remember seeing "Marionette" and "Breath Taking Guy" listed on the NYC WWRL song list. Never heard
either of them on the radio. But I did get a cut out copy of "Marionette" in 1971.
It wasn't until 1974 that I was able finally get Marvelettes albums. I started with "The Marvelettes", quickly
followed by "In Full Bloom," "Sophisticated Soul" and "Return of The Marvelettes" and "The Marvelettes
Anthology." In 1977, I had an opportunity to see a Fake troupe of marvelettes. I knew they were Fake,
because those women had to be in their early twenties. Any real Marvelette would've been in her early
thirties at that time. But I've only seen the Real Marvelettes on old tv clips, usually singing "Please Mr.
Postman," or "Two Many Fish In The Sea." But recently I saw a lip synch show with the Marvelettes doing,
"Don't Mess With Bill." Then the host asked them to do "Postman." To my shock, who was sitting in the
audience nobody but The Supremes! It looked very eerie. The Marvelettes (Gladys, Wanda and Katherine)
looked a bit uncomfortable, while Ross was bobbing her head, Mary looked glamorous as always, but
Florence looked as uncomfortable as the Marvelettes. The entire scene just appeared like the Supremes
were spying on the Marvelettes. And that scratches the surface of my musical love affair with the
Marvelettes.

Ray, Goodman and Brown (aka The Moments)
The performing longevity is remarkable, but check the singles this group, a.k.a. THE MOMENTS, has
collected. Ever since 1969's "Not On The Outside But Inside Strong", they have charted consistently with
classics like "Look At Me I'm In Love", "Love On A Two Way Street", (covered by Stacy Latisaw), "With You",
"Happy Anniversary", and "Special Lady", one of B.M.I.'s most performed songs of 1980.
Warm in a non-threatening way, they have the ability to hit a fella's soft spot and to make women feel
comfortable. Billy Brown's flexible tenor can easily catch a female off guard, making her easy prey for the
"let's -get-it-on' lyric. Billy Brown was also a member of a group called the Broadway's. He sang lead on THE
MOMENTS hits as before mentioned. Such as; "Love On A Two Way Street", "Sunday", "Lovely Way She
Loves", "Lucky Me", "I Do", "Inside Of You", and "All I Have".
Al Goodman was a former member of the Corvettes and the Vipers. After joining the Moments, Al Goodman
went on to become one of the major writers and producers for the group and many aother artists. "Look At
Me I'm In Love," "Sexy Mama", "Inside Of You" and "Happy Anniversary", are just a few of the songs he
produced and wrote.
Before the untimely death of Mr. Harry Ray, he had been with the group for 25 years with a brief interruption
in 1982 when he pursued a solo career. Al Goodman and Billy Brown, who own the name "Ray, Goodman,
and Brown", reinstated Kevin Owens to replace Harry Ray upon his untimely death. Kevin was lead vocalist
in 1982 for Ray, Goodman, and Brown when Ray embarked on a solo career. In 1984 Kevin recorded the
Album "Who's Gonna Make The First Move". Kevin also sings background for Luther Vandross when not
appearing with Ray, Goodman, and Brown.

Arlene Smith (Chantels)
Arlene Smith, original lead singer of The Chantels, and the “Queen of Doo-Wop,” is a living legend. Girl
Groups from the Shirelles and the Marvelettes to the Supremes and the Crystals all have credited Arlene
Smith as being inspirational and influential to their own career development.
The Chantels are considered by many to have been the best of the Girl Groups. Arlene Smith (lead vocals),
Lois Harris (first tenor), Sonia Goring (second tenor), the late Jackie Landry (second alto), and Rene Minus
began their dream while attending choir practice at St. Anthony of Padua elementary school, in the Bronx. By
1957, the girls had been singing together for over seven years. A staple of their diet was Gregorian chants,
taught to such perfection that changing notes and parts was second nature to the youngsters.

What set the Chantels apart from the other groups of the day—apart from their vocal presence—was the
writing ability of Arlene Smith. Girl Groups were still a novelty in the mid-50s—and few wrote their own
material. Arlene wrote both lyrics and music. The combination of her classical background, with simply yet
poignant lyrics, made her more successful at sixteen than she could possibly imagine. Her first song for the
Chantels, “He’s Gone,” was written about a boyfriend while she was practicing piano.
By the summer of 1957, the Chantels were signed to Goldner’s End Records, which would also be home to
Little Anthony and The Imperials, Frankie Lymon and The Teenagers, and the Bobbettes.
The Chantels’ first single, “He’s Gone,” was released in 1957, and featured four part a capella harmony
behind Arlene’s soaring falsetto. The song instantly set a new standard for female vocal groups. Their first
live performance was at the famed Apollo Theater, where the Chantels wowed the audience with “He’s
Gone.” In October, 1957, the Chantels recorded their now-seminal anthem, Arlene Smith’s composition of
“Maybe.” Released in December, it quickly climbed both Billboard’s pop and R&B charts, reaching Number
15 pop and Number 2 R&B. The Chantels’ third single release was “Every Night (I Pray),” which reached
Number 39 pop and Number 16 R&B.
In the spring of 1958, the Chantels became the first female R&B group to release an EP, including “Sure of
Love,” “Prayee,” “I Love You So,” and “How Could You Call It Off.” “I Love You So” became the Chantels’
fourth single—and the first A Side not written by Arlene. The single reached Number 42 Pop and Number 14
R&B, but it would be the Chantels’ last hit on End. While End released a second EP—an honor usually
reserved for well-established groups like the Clovers and the Coasters, who had been having hits for years—
the company began focusing more of its promotional attention on Little Anthony and the Imperials. Because
they were still in high school, the Chantels couldn’t tour as much as other groups. They were dropped by End
in 1959.
Arlene Smith now decided to go solo, recording three singles between 1961 and 1963, the Phil Spectorproduced “Love, Love, Love,” “He Knows I Love Him Too Much,” and “Everything,” as well as the Richard
Barrett-produced “Mon Cherie Au Revoir.” In 1970, the original Chantels reunited to record a single for RCA
Records, “I’m Gonna Win Him Back/Love Makes All The Difference In The World,” which featured Arlene’s
soaring lead vocals.
Today, Arlene Smith still lives in The Bronx, where she is actively involved in her community as a singer,
actress and educator. The teenaged prodigy of 1958 has blossomed into a savvy woman. Arlene holds an
associate’s degree in design, and both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education. Her many interests
include painting and design. She also has written a children’s book, and lent her voice to the UNICEF
recording of “Our Message To The People.” Her group, Arlene Smith’s Chantels, are regular features at
theaters, fairs, festivals and casinos around the country. Arlene’s riveting 1999 performance of “Maybe” on
the PBS “Doo-Wop 50” special is considered to be the epitome of PBS concert special performances. Her
love for jazz singing, suppressed throughout her career, is showing itself, as she fulfills a lifelong ambition
with a serious entry into cabaret and theater work.

been recognized and honored with her inductions into the Rhythm and Blues Foundation, Vocal Group Hall

Vince Montana (MFSB & SalSoul Orchestra)
I am a very devoted fan of Philly soul more than any other sound I’ve come across. Those MFSB musicians
made magic. Vince Montana is man!!! What he and others created at Philly International and SalSoul was
history in the making and defined an era. Vince Montana can be found on a great album that came out
about four years ago called Nuyorican Soul (aka Kenny Dope & Louie Vega) It contains a host of legends
like Roy Ayers, George Benson etc. Ironically, it also contains a remake of a Rotary Connection tune (ie
Minnie Riperton) called "Black Gold Star of the Sun". Vince has a couple of great solo albums (that I am a
proud owner of) released on Atlantic in the mid 70's.

Cliff Perkins (Soul Generation)
Cliff Perkins the leader of the Classic Slow Jam group, Soul Generation has been a member of the Soul
Patrol Mailing List since the first six months of our existence and during that time he has been a good friend
to us. One of the things that Cliff does as he performs around the country is to always mention Soul Patrol
when he is interviewed. As such he is a real ambassador for the past, present and future of the music. Here

Bernie Worrell (Parliament-Funkadelic, Talking Heads, W00 Warriors)
It was Bernie Worrell's work as a founding member and Musical Director of the massively influential
supergroup Parliament-Funkadelic that sealed the induction of this genius of a musician into the Rock 'n' Roll
Hall of Fame in 1997. Yet it's intriguing to consider that Worrell's numerous other stellar collaborations - most

Did you ever hear Michael Henderson while he was a part of the Miles Davis band? He was ultra funky,
especially on the album "On The Corner". However he never got much due as a bass player due to his later
success as a "balladeer", including MONSTER DUETS with the likes of Phyllis Hyman and Jean Carne!
Michael Henderson provided the thumpin bass sounds as a part of Miles Davis early to mid 70's band. Check
him out on the albums "Big Fun", "Agartha", "Dark Magus", "On The Corner" and more. Of course none of us
realized at that time that he was also a fine singer as he proved later in the decade with several hit records
such a "You Are My Starship" with (Norman Connors) and solo with songs like "Be My Girl", "Wide Receiver"

Chilites
The Chi-Lites were formed in Chicago in 1959. Originally called the Hi-Lites, they consisted of Marshall
Thompson (birthday 24th Aug), Creadel "Red" Jones, Eugene Record, Robert Lester (birthday 16th August)
and Clarence Johnson. As the Hi-Lites they released a number of singles on local labels then in 1964 they
changed their name to Marshall & the Chi-Lites; the 'C' being added to reflect the name of their hometown,
Chicago. By the end of 1964 Clarence Johnson had left the group and they truncated their name to simply
the Chi-Lites. During the ensuing four years Eugene Record slowly emerged as the group's lead singer,
songwriter and producer.
In 1969, after signing with Brunswick the previous year, "Give It Away" became their first USA national hit
single attaining number ten in the R&B charts. The follow-up release "Let Me Be The Man My Daddy Was"
was moderately successful but another major hit was elusive until "Are You My Woman?" climbed into the
R&B top ten in early 1971. A succession of top ten hits followed commencing with their next release "(For
God's Sake) Give More Power To The People" which was the first release to crossover into the pop charts.
The ballads "Have You Seen Her" and "Oh Girl" followed, reaching number one in the R&B charts with "Oh
Girl" also achieving the number one slot in the pop charts in the spring of 1972. In 2000 the Chi-Lites were
inducted into Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame.
The current lineup is Marshall Thompson (the Founder and leader),Tara Thompson, Robert "Squirrel" Lester
and Frank Reed (who replaced Anthony Watson). They are currently recording with Marshall Thompsons'
record label Marance Records distributed by Sumthing Distribution. Their new CD is entitled "Low Key" by
Marshall Thompson featuring the Chi-Lites. The Chi-Lites also feature, along with other big-named legendary
artistes, in a docu/movie called "Only The Strong Survive" by Miramax films, which was released in 2003.

Marlon Saunders
Born and raised in Maryland, the classically trained Saunders seemed naturally drawn to music. Singing at
age 5, picking out tunes by ear on the piano, Saunders studied saxophone at the prestigious Peabody
Conservatory of Music. His teachers guided him toward competitions in Europe, but the rarefied world of
international prodigy was not Saunders’ agenda. The burgeoning vocalist wanted to sing. And Sarah Vaughn
- on vinyl, at least - helped him make the decision. "I listened to a Sarah Vaughn record that I’d played
millions of times before," recalls Saunders, "and suddenly, I heard it. I knew I wanted to sing. "
He enrolled in the world famous Berklee College of Music in Boston, and honed his vocal craft, remaining in
Boston after graduation, writing songs and jingles to pay bills. Moving to New York, he lucked into more
session work, even landing a plum job writing and recording a jingle for Miller Lite. "I was the Miller Lite man
for three years," Saunders recalls. "And that sustained me and allowed me to write my own stuff."
Studio work with producer Warren Rosenstein and the burgeoning acid jazz scene in New York led Saunders
to help start Jazzhole, a 10 - member group that merged jazzy riffs with soulful crooning over a variety of
stylish grooves. Saunders became one of the founding members of Sepia, another vocal group. As a highly
sought-after background vocalist, Saunders worked with major talents such as Billy Joel, Sting, Barry White

Sarah Dash (Labelle)
In her pre-teen years, Sarah turned to secular music, began performing with her schoolmates, and formed, a
group called "The Del Capri's"' in which Nona Hendryx was also a member. They auditioned for a manager in

Philadelphia named Montague and did a few talent and local shows around the Trenton area. When some of
the Del Capri's no longer showed the dream as Nona and Sarah their manager put them together with two
other girls, Cindy Birdsong and Patricia Holte and called them "The Blue Bells". Because was another group
in the artist union with that name, the record company president re-named the group as, "Patti La Belie and
The Blue Bells." They rolled out with the hit song, "I Sold My Heart to the Junkman," that bought them
national and international attention.
Feeling that they needed a change, Sarah contacted Vicki Wickham, a British television producer of "Ready
Steady Go." After living in London for nearly a year, they hit the American audiences with a new look and
new name "LABELLE." Now Vicki Wickham was their sole manager. Overnight, the group rose in popularity
in the pop music world with their individual sleek space age inspired costumes, and cutting edge sultry
songs' of lust and desire, with strong political messages. Their cross over album "Night Birds," on the Epic
label sold to gold album status. The gold record single, "Lady Marmalade, "placed them among the top pop
groups in the world; in the six years, that Labelle crissed crossed the globe in concert. Making history again,
Labelle was the first black female group to perform at the world famous "METROPOLITAN OPERA HOUSE"
at Lincoln Center in New York City. Sarah in silver bra, space skirts, and flowing feathers, holding the
harmony with her partners, Nona and Patti La Belie effortlessly reaching high harmonies with her 4 and 1/2
octave range.
When Patti, Nona, and Sarah decided to pursue solo careers. Many fans around the world cried. Sarah,
solo, belting out dance club classics with and edge, on "Sinner man," "Lucky Tonight," and "Low down
Rhythm. if Sarah was "the pretty one," the girl next door, the woman in red, beckoning you with her siren's

Alternative Christian Funk/Jazz Band SOUNDOCTRINE first appeared at The Northeastern Ohio Gospel
Music Connection in January, 2002 then opening for Grammy Winner Bobby “Blue” Bland the following
month at the famed Cellar in Struthers Ohio. They continued to travel throughout Northern Ohio, Western
P.A. and Kentucky, where they were chosen as an Official 2003 MEIC Showcasing Artist.
SOUNDOCTRINE’S two CDs “PERSEVERANCE” and “SD Live!!!” released May 2002 and June 2003
respectively on their own NIAYANA Label continue to receive rave reviews throughout the glob al Indie Artist
community. Their third CD entitled “ENDURANCE” is scheduled for a late winter 2004 release. The band’s
sound is intentionally marketed to the secular community with a focus toward the 25-54 age group. Their

Ray Davis (P-Funk, Temptations, Zapp, Original P)
Let me say this about "Bro Ray". I had the chance to meet him at the Original P show at BB King's in NYC
last summer. Not only is he one of the GREATEST singers that we have on the scene, but he is also an
awfully nice person. He's also a big fan of Soul Patrol.
I'm a big fan, got a chance to holler at the brother and some of his co-horts at a P Funk show held here in
Chicago about 2 years ago. he added some beautiful bottom to the best Temptation album in some time, I'm
sure you know the one, Some Enchanted Evening, I'm so Glad, What A Difference A day makes, I liken it to
their Mellow Mood LP. Ray said he had always wanted to be a Tempt and his wish came true this was
Melvin’s last album as a Temptation and Ray did an excellent job. He is a good brother Theo, Melvin, Ray,
Otis, Ron & Ali Woodson The Fuji Island mix and the acapella version of Some Enchanted evening were

The Ad Libs
The Ad Libs were an early-'60s vocal group from New Jersey whose female lead vocals and male-voiced
backing prefigured the jazzy doo wop singing style of several later groups, including Manhattan Transfer.
They scored a major hit in early 1965 with "The Boy From New York City," written by John T. Taylor, a
saxophone player who had worked with various big band groups as far back as the '30s.
By the early '60s, John T. Taylor had quit playing music and had turned his attention to teaching. During this
time, he heard a young Hudson County quintet, who was calling themselves the Creators. The group
consisted of Hugh Harris, Danny Austin, James Wright, John Alan, and Chris Coles. By mid-1963, the
Creators had released their first record on the TR label without any chart success. A single for the Phillips
label, "I'll Stay Home," met the same fate a year later.
The group re-formed in 1964 in Newark, NJ. Dave Watt and Norman Doegan replaced departing members
Wright, Alan, and Coles, and they added a female lead vocalist, Mary Ann Thomas. A new name was
needed, and thereafter they began calling themselves the Ad Libs. By now,
Taylor's jazz-inflected songwriting along with the Ad Libs' natural harmonies created a sound like no other
group. This was best personified on the upbeat piano-driven bounce rhythm of Taylor's first demo with the
group, "The Boy From New York City."
The Legendary Escorts
For about a year or so, I thought was the BADDEST SLOW JAM GROUP OF ALL...Th ey made 2 Classic
albums in the mid 1970's that were absolutely HUGE at Basement parties that I went to in NYC at that time.
Interestingly enough, most of their songs are "covers", however some of those "covers" are better than the
originals. Take for example, the Escorts version of "Ooh Baby Baby" (It's BETTER than Smokey's in my
opinion!!!!!) These are the kind of albums that if they came on at a party, you could count on them playing
the whole side and the lights would go out :)
They made two classic albums back in the 1970's "All We Need Is Another Chance" and "3 Down 4 To Go".
If you haven't heard of them before and you are a lover of GREAT slow jams, then you owe it to yourself and
the one you love to pick up on BOTH of these two CD's if you see them in the store.
And when you get them home, if you are smart, you will send the kids away for the weekend :)

Michael Hampton
Michael Hampton was the guitarist for the band Funkadelic after original guitarist Eddie Hazel departed to
join the Temptations on 1975. Like Hazel, Hampton was recruited as a seventeen-year-old guitar prodigy.
Michael Hampton is a legend, trained from the maggot brain school of funk, and it shows here-mike has
been around since 1974 playing with p-funk-check out hardcore jollies, one nation under a groove CD and
knee deep, and you'll learn mike ain't no joke. Mr. Hampton is underrated which is a shame. but the whole
CD is funk acid rock at it's best. Mike just blazes the guitar in solo after solo, his mentor George Clinton even
stops by and puts his 2 cents in. this is how p-funk should have sounded all along but was never given the
chance, so if any funkateers like Mike on hardcore joolies, knee deep, lunchmeataphobia, funk get ready to
roll, who says a funk band can't play rock. this is definitely for you.

Mighty Sam McClain
Mighty Sam McClain in some ways would fit the "stereotype" that the "soul music experts" at Rolling Stone
Magazine would have us believe. He is a native of Louisiana and originally started his recording career with
Malaco records back when Malaco first started, back in the mid to late 1960's. He was homeless for a period
of time during the 1970's, when his recording career stalled. By the late 1980's he made it back and has
since become a top performer on both the American and European "blues circuit".
When you listen to his voice it does indeed sound like a cross between Sam Cooke, Otis Redding and Al
Green! He is an amazingly powerful singer. His voice will touch your heart, no matter how hard your heart
might just happen to be. Mighty Sam's got a message in his music. Take a listen to it, and you may just find

LaRonda Davis, BRC President
For LaRonda Davis, advertising pays the bills but music keeps her attention. During her eight years in NYC
she's occupied her free time with hosting shows for SISTA Factory and Black Tea, acting as stage manager
for BRC tributes to Jimi Hendrix and Sly Stone, and managing merchandise for Burnt Sugar and Shrine for
the Black Madonna. She's also lent her services to various organizations, artists and friends as a graphic
designer, writer, editor, and radio/stage personality (Creative Unity Collective). She is currently partnered
with local composer/musician/vocalist Tamar-kali in Flaming Yoni Productions, a company that will produce
and release the artist's work while giving a platform to live performance. A card-carrying and enthusiastic
member of the BRC since 1996, LaRonda was editor of the monthly Newsletter for 6 years before becoming
BRC President.
Darrell M. McNeill, BRC Director of Operations
BRC Director of Operations - Darrell McNeill is a freelance journalist, producer and musician from Brooklyn,
NY. He has written for BRE Magazine, Demographix online magazine, The Village Voice, Vibe, SPIN,
Oneworld, The Music Paper, Soul Patrol magazine and other publications. He has recently contributed an
essay on the history of Black artists in rock music to the anthology, "Rip It Up: The Secret History of Rock 'N
Roll," due out on Palgrave-Macmillan, November 2003. He is also one of the producers of the Creative Unity
Collective Show on WBAI, 99.5 FM in New York, as well as Radio BRC for Soul Patrol.net. He is presently
producing three independent music projects and has been an active member of the BRC since 1995.

Ken “Spider” Webb
For the past 35 years native New Yorkers have come to depend heavily on the voice of Ken ‘Spider’ Webb,
one of New York’s most popular morning radio personalities, to get them going early every morning. Ken
