Welcome Back!
What a great summer this has been. Starting with the Diamond Jubilee
and, as I write this, the Paralympic games. What an inspiration to us
all.
It was great to see so many members at the meeting on Thursday
and a warm welcome to the 32 new members who joined us. I hope
you all had an enjoyable break and for those who stayed in the heat, here in
Jalon, you managed to stay cool and those who visited the UK, you managed to stay dry.
At times I bet we were all wishing that we swap the temperatures and rain.
Now back to normal, and the start of the hard work for all the group leaders, who we could
not do without. They are the 'backbone' of our U3A and I can't thank them enough for all
their hard work.
We have a number of new groups and I'm sure that members will be keen to make these a
big success. If you are keen to start a new group contact Harry or Jean. Their details are on
the website. Don't forget we still have a place on the committee for an assistant secretary
and I know that Jazz (Editor) and Pat would really appreciate some help with the newsletter.
Come on let’s share the load! That’s what makes us successful -being involved.
Well, I am off to watch more of the fantastic events on the TV. Tell me how do those
'visually impaired' players manage to play such skilful football? I think the English squad
could take a few lessons from them.
See you at the next meeting. Bob.

THE POWER OF FOOD !
Do you know your onions ? Do you know which foods can lift your mood, protect you from cancer, enhance your eyesight, etc ?? Sheila Skinner has sent us a marvellous chart listing 46 everyday foods and what good things they can do for you. It’s too big to reproduce here, but look in
the gallery on our website for the chart in full.

“ It was all right on the Night”
Recently, some 45 cinema enthusiasts enjoyed a charity performance of the
25th Anniversary Production of Phantom of the Opera at the Cinema Club, held in Parcent. This production was recorded at the Royal Albert Hall, to mark the anniversary, and brought together the
previous 'Phantoms' including Michael Crawford who received a standing ovation from the crowd.
The entire production was magical, and it was very difficulty not to feel emotional during the big
love scenes, and sadness for the Phantom as he realises that Christine will never truly love him. One
member actually reported that she had seen the production twice in London and this was 'the next
best thing'.
Rapturous applause concluded the screening and many of the members could be heard singing a
selections from the musical as they made their way home.
The event was held to support the Jalon Valley Help project of Casa de Animo, a drop- in centre in
Alcalali.

(Sandra wrote her report some weeks ago, - we now know that 85€ was raised on the night)
CARELINE THEATRE, THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST EXTRA DATE.
There is now an extra date available for this performance.
In addition to the evening shows on 18th, 19th and 20th of October at 8pm there will now also be a
MATINEE PERFORMANCE ON SUNDAY 21ST OCTOBER AT 3PM,

This will mean that anyone who does not wish to drive in the dark will be able to see this wonderful
production without worrying.
It may also be easier to arrange around lunch and dinner times too.
Hopefully the availability of this extra date will encourage even more of our members to support
Careline, our fantastic local theatre company.

U3A Trip to Guadalest
by Diedre Stewart.
June 14th promptly at 9.15 the coach left Jalon. The sun was shining and a jolly crowd settled down to
enjoy the scenery on the way. Acres of vine, sea views and mountain ranges. Lemons and Nisperos
meant we were getting close. The Bell -tower famously sitting on its much photographed rock came
into view. Within an hour of leaving Jalon we were sitting under trees having a coffee.
If you have not experienced a boat trip that is entirely silent because it is run on Solar power than this is
the place for you. The enormous reservoir is the most beautiful pine edged lake you can imagine. We
climbed down a pretty path to the Jetty where we had 'The Barco Solar' entirely for the use of our party.
The 55 minute trip was a must for camera lovers. Everyone stopped speaking for a
minute to enjoy the total silence of the boat and the views of Guadalest from the lake. Without
exception everyone was delighted with such a lovely start to our day.
Guadalest itself - Castell de Guadalest can only be explored on foot by a sloping tunnel cut through
the rock on which the Churches, Belfry and the Castle ruins still stand. It was founded by the Moors
who also carved the terraces for crops which are still used today and are still irrigated by the original
ditches.
Everyone explored, shopped and took lunch at their leasure.
The Vall del Pop group has over 600 members, and these excursions and cultural trips are always
over-subscribed. And if the Guadalest day out is anything to judge by, it is no surprise. The Chocoholic member was catered for and one member met someone on the trip from the same
English village. No wonder we queue up to put our names down. Thank you U3A.
A little bit of England !
In June of this year we went for a holiday in our caravan in France for the last time. The
fifth week saw 20 members of our Camping Club, the “Wanderers,” of Costa Blanca join us
for a Rally in Navarrenx, Aquitaine. On the 3rd June we decided to take part in the Queen’s
Jubilee. We took over the camp Marquee, filled it with balloons and Union Jacks. It was to
be the Grand Jubilee Pizza Party. We invited all the camp to join in, so long as they wore
something red, white and blue !
Richard, the camp owner, produced a tasty freshly made pizza of our choice for each of
us, and June and I started them off with some boxes of wine. We found that three of our
number had brought their guitars and comic songs. The marquee was soon rocking with
laughter, and then songs of “Swing low, sweet chariot,” “Jerusalem, “ and “Land of Hope
and Glory” echoed across the site. Even the French and Dutch joined in.
It was a lovely setting with the old walled town ten minutes walk away and the salmon river
on the other side. All who came to our Grand Jubilee Pizza Party thoroughly enjoyed being
part of the Queen’s Jubilee……it was a “little bit of England !”

A circle of men -
from Bruno Goffin.
Research has shown that it is not only stress and feelings of aggression, that predisposes hard driving and
hard working men to heart attacks. Men pay dearly for the privilege of performing and dominating.
Come and share the experience of sitting around a fire with mature men you trust. We talk about whatever interests us, we laugh a lot, we listen without interrupting and we challenge each other..

NOSTALGIC FOR THOSE GREEN FIELDS OF HOME?? JENNY AND ROLF
ARE STILL IN ENGLAND, AND SEND US A BRILLIANT BLOG.
Our thoughts and best wishes go out to Jenny and Rolf Multsroh, popular U3A members who have
had more than their share of health problems whilst away for the summer. Luckily, whilst spending
a lot of compulsory time in her room at home, Jenny is able to observe some wonderful westcountry life. Read her full evocative essay on the U3A website (click on Gallery”) and we guarantee
you’ll even smell that unmistakable English-field aroma we sometimes miss so much in sunny Spain!
“ …. So this green space is an arena for every aspect of life; birth, death, renewal, love,
jealousy, industriousness, it is a fascinating theatre of which I never tire. The Field. For
many people an empty expanse of green. For me,my stage and my classroom! “
HUGELY, AMAZINGLY, URGENTLY, LIFE-CHANGINGLY IMPORTANT!

KNOW YOUR COMMITTEE ! Continuing our regular delve behind the scenes, hardworking secretary Graham tells us about himself .... Who is that man on the podium
with our President ??
“ Just to introduce myself I am Graham Quirk, your U3A secretary.
Born in 1946 and raised in Leeds. For my sins I am still following Leeds United. After leaving high
school I sort of drifted into a career in insurance, as it seemed like a good idea to earn some money
whilst I found a real job – which I never did. Perhaps I have finally found it in this role as your Secretary?
Wherever I have lived in my life I seem to have been an avid joiner of committees – professional, sporting, church, Village Council, PTA, Community Association etc. Lo and behold, after having been a
U3A member for only 6 months, I joined your committee.
Is this really sad or what? …....... Surely
there must be tablets for this affliction nowadays?
Despite early reservations I was actually quite successful in my insurance career, holding various managerial positions over the years. Before I retired I had become a Chartered Insurer, following my election
to the Royal College of Chartered Insurers. Insurance gave me the opportunity to live and work in different areas of the UK, essentially Leeds, Southampton and finally Perth.
Perth was my favourite because not only did I meet and marry Maureen in Scotland, but at the tender
age of 53, and after some 34 years in insurance I managed to wangle an early retirement package. This
ultimately enabled us to move to Spain, in 2003. We both married relatively late in life – I was a very
happily unmarried man until I was 46 (I nearly got away with it!). We have an adopted son, Jamie,
now 21 and in the UK chasing an elusive job.
Not wishing to be in any way political I would simply end by reminding members how lucky we
all were to be born when we were born and having had the opportunity to
work when we did, and then retire to this beautiful part of the world. ”
GRAHAM WORKS HARD FOR THE
U3A … ONE OF HIS LESSER-KNOWN
ROLES IS AS “ASSISTANT “ TO THE
CASUAL CHOIR WHO MEET IN HIS
HOUSE, AS HE EXPLAINED IN HIS
RECENT ENTRY IN OUR 2012 POETRY
AND RHYME COMPETITION ! ….
I see grapes and almonds and blossom,
There’s even some snow on the top.
What a wonderful month is February,
The Teaboy’s Lament
Just a hint of Spring on the way,
With the happy sound of our Casual Choir,
Now what on earth am I saying,
Ringing loudly in my ears,
’Cos it’s blankety blank cold today.
With assurances from their leader,
The singing has almost finished,
They’ll be in tune, one of these years
For me, and the cats, a reprieve,
I sit and gaze over the valley,
U3A has a lot to answer for,
The magnificent Vall Del Pop,
Ah well, time to make coffees and teas.
Our Publicity Officer, Carol, went AWOL during
the Olympics, but has ‘fessed up to having spent her
time at the Olympics ! She says she had a great
time, but just look at the weather !!
MY OLYMPIC EXPERIENCE
By Carol Lockhart
I was fortunate to get the tickets I requested for the
Olympics, two for the Cross-Country day of the Three
Day Eventing at Greenwich Park on 30th July. My friend Sue and I travelled to London and our anticipation was tangible, both of us really looking forward to the whole experience. We have been
nuts about horses from an early age so it was to be a real treat.
We had planned our route meticulously once we had reached King’s Cross but this was not necessary. At the station there was a special stand ‘manned’ by ‘Games Makers’ who were armed with all
the information required to get us to Greenwich Park. The train was filled with ‘horsey’ Olympic
‘goers’. Everyone was happy and cheerful, the weather was fantastic, and the Games Makers lined
the walk from the railway station to the venue with broad smiles and wishing us a lovely day. Union
Jacks were for sale along the route and once we reached the park we were ushered through airport
style security by forces personnel, all of whom had a great demeanour and obviously enjoyed being
involved with the public as opposed to shooting at the Taliban.
The normal plan at horse trials is to try and see at least one horse go over each jump, then by the
time you have walked the whole course you (and your legs) are relieved to find a place in the stand
to sit and watch a few go through the arena and the rest of the action on the big screen. All the riders were cheered by the crowds, which numbered in excess of 150,000, but special roars could be
heard from various jumps whenever a British rider was out on the course.
The views across the London skyline were fantastic, see picture, and although I had had reservations about the venue because there is already an established cross country course at Windsor Great
Park, I have to admit that the setting was spectacular and the arena was amazing. Sue and I will
never forget the experience, the atmosphere, which was electric, the setting – absolutely incredible,
the happy people and just the whole amazing day.
Have I any regrets? – Just that I didn’t apply for more tickets for more events, because, for me, this
was a once in a lifetime experience.
Sad News. The Loss of one of our Members.
Pierre Louis, recently passed away on the 2nd August.
Pierre could always be found with the Daily Mail crossword in
his hand. He was a very active member of the Friday Snooker
Group, and although no budding Steve Davis, enjoyed the social aspect.
Pierre was a very kind and wise gentleman . He will be sadly
missed by his family, Linda and Dennis, and all who knew him.
“HOW DOES A PLANE
TAKE-OFF, STUART?”
“JUST LIKE THAT!”
OK - so you’ve got this tap, suspended from
which you have (by chance) a tablespoon suspended on a piece of thin string. Then you turn
the tap on , and water flows over the spoon.,
causing it to swing to the right, or swing to the
left. Which is it to be?
Well, according to Stuart Wishart, our speaker
at the general meeting last Thursday, if you
have the answer to this, you know exactly how
airoplane’s wings work!
Stuart had his entire audience completely enthralled, so much so that when he had finished his talk, we were
all clamouring to ask questions! Why did Concorde have an adjustable nose? Why are there Old Pilots, Bold
Pilots, but no Old, Bold Pilots? How do they loop the loop? Can someone really land a modern plane using only
a mobile phone in the case of emergency?
A marvellously instructive and entertaining talk. A big thank you from us all, especially the Newsletter Editor
in the front row hanging on your every word so that she can check the pilot’s degree of skill next time she
flies Cheapskate Airlines!!
The “Travel and Culture People” have new members!
Did you spot these new folk manning the events tables at the Town Hall
last Thursday? They are new volunteers John and Val Blakeman, who
have taken on the task of organising this year’s Christmas dinner dance.
As you will seeing them a lot from now on, we thought it might be interesting to find out who they are, … so they told us …..
We came to Spain 9 yrs ago, having retired from full time teaching, and having spent the first 4 yrs
yo-yoing, doing supply work, both in schools and for the authority, marking SATS papers and of course
enjoying the obligatory child-minding during half terms. We live on Gata Residencia and are active
members of the Javea International Baptist Church. We have a heart for people, but our Spanish is a
bit ‘iffy’ so please don’t call on us to get you to the doctor’s, hospital or the town hall. Other than that
we get by reasonably well.
“
John enjoys reading thrillers and now doesn’t take part in Sport but is continually watching it from a
supine position in a comfortable chair. He likes general knowledge quizzes and crosswords. Val
spends a lot of time painting in oils and at present is painting portraits of all the grandchildren for
their Christmas presents. She enjoys completing jigsaws, doing cryptic crosswords and Sudoku . We
both are very sociable people and love to spend time with friends especially when eating is involved.
John is very good at sorting drinks and entertaining guests. He has a great sense of humour and a tremendous fund of general knowledge.
We joined the U3A about 3 yrs ago through the encouragement of our 2 very dear friends Mike and
Annie Hawker. Since then we have mainly attended the trips and dinners. Hence we found ourselves
being roped in to help with the TCP group. At present we are organising the Christmas Dinner Dance,
so get yourselves booked in for a great evening on Tuesday 11thDecember. “

Success at Castell de Castells for the U3A Val
Del Pop Petanque Group
Harry Roskoss (July)
The U3A pair of Shirley MacDonald and George Warne won the very close
fought competition at Castell de Castells. The games took place as part of
the Cultural week celebrations being held in the town. It was hot, it was
tiring but after nearly 4 hours of play, the pair proved to be worthy winners
and received their trophies, which were presented by the Alcadesa.
Outside the Casa Cultura, paella cooking was being demonstrated and the
group was invited to share in the festivities with the local community. Everyone enjoyed the paella together with tapas, sangria and music. The group is
looking forward to next year’s event.
Roger Gillet started the Petanque group and was responsable for liaising with the Ayuntamiento in Castell
and getting the two courts constructed. He has now moved to another part of the Costa Blanca, and the
new leader, Jim Lockhart, has given a huge “thank you” for all his predecesor’s efforts. The group now has
spare sets of boules, so anyone who would like a try-out but does not have the equipment is welcome to
join the weekly session on Sunday mornings. See details on the website.
HAVE YOU ENTERED OUR PHOTOGRAPHIC COMPETITION ?
We have disallowed this one, on the grounds that we don’t have a
category entitled “What I did on my holidays !” So there’s
plenty of opportunity for YOU to win a valuable prize! You have
until September 14th to get your photo to
[email protected] (full details on the website).
You can enter all five categories - so get busy!!
