Out And About - At Melton U3A The funds from our Federal grant have been received and installation of the split air cooler/heat will begin in the next few weeks in the computer room. This will be appreciated by members using the room as it currently is very cold in winter and hot during summer. Melton U3A was represented at two Seniors Week events on Wednesday 2nd October. Secretary Jenny and I attended the launch of Seniors Week for the City of Melton. Held at the Caroline Springs library we were entertained with live music, were well fed and had the chance to promote our U3A. On Friday 4th October, Jenny and I represented U3A at the Seniors Dinner Dance, which is another great opportunity for meeting people and promotion. We are still enrolling new members, meaning our membership has continued to grow throughout the year. Cont.next page A movie group has been formed and was successfully launched on Monday 14th October. Once again I ask all members to think about any course they would like to see, or run at U3A. Any idea will be considered, as well as making members feel they are contributing. The Djerriwarrah Festival will be held on 9th November and we will again be participating. This a great event to display and sell our art and craft and promote u3a. A list for volunteers will be in the lunch room, please try and help and be involved in your U3A - John Bermingham If you would like to contribute to the newsletter with news, a good joke, a story or poem you have written, or any piece of useful information please send via email to: [email protected] Public holiday: U3A will be closed on Tuesday November 4th being Melbourne Cup day... AT THE MOVIES WITH U3A The lights were down, the audience seated and the smell of popcorn filled the air. Everything was in place for the first of the Monday movies at U3A. For the next 2 hours not a sound from the audience as they watched entranced, a movie none had seen before, or even heard of. The film shown, ‘Across The Universe,’ told a tale using music and lyrics of the Beatles of the changes and turbulence of the late 1960s. Underneath the musical aspect, the film told a tale of searching as well as romance. The movie ended, lights went up and a stunned audience sat, several of who were seen to wipe a tear from their eye. A great start to a new course! Second Exercise Class Ida has commenced another class on Fridays 1pm to 2pm in the University lunch room. Walk across the drive opposite U3a main door then take 2nd set of double doors to your left (they open automatically) & walk straight ahead through first room to the next room. Voice Training Has commenced with good attendance with Dawn Rumble leading the group on Thursdays at 1pm at u3a in Room 2. Members, please remember the importance of updating any relevant information to U3A; your phone number, email address, home address etc. Not been feeling well? U3A breaks up for Christmas on Friday December 20th and return at the beginning of the school year in 2014 Members were asked why they joined U3A so here are a few replies from the computer group... "I enjoy coming in each week as the all the staff & students are friendly & welcoming . They make computer jargon easy to understand. We learn at our own pace & no question is considered to be a silly one." … Joanne “As to why I go to computer class_ I didn't learn at school & am trying to keep up with technology & the lessons have been most valuable teaching me the use of Word Programs for sending greeting card type messages, correctly & easily writing letters, & also my small home office needs with XL Spreadsheet. The class is fun & informal and whilst Thelma with Nola's assistance, provide structured lessons with worksheets, explaining clear step by step procedures, they have also been able to help solve other "how to do" problems outside of this format as I come across them.” … Cheers Lauren . “I decided to join the computer class to fill in the Microsoft Office skills gaps I had identified after leaving my employ. In a normal office environment, if a problem happens, the person near you, (or the IT department) usually has the answer, this no longer works when you are in the big bad world.” ... Gordon A few sayings to think about. "A gentleman is one who puts more into the world than he takes out." "The person who doesn't make mistakes is unlikely to make anything." "Work for a cause, not for applause. Live life to express, not to impress. Don't strive to make your presence noticed, just make your absence felt." "Great people talk about ideas. Average people talk about things. Small people talk about other people." "You can never be overdressed or overeducated." MELTON COMMUNITY GARDEN If you enjoy gardening and love to see the product of this relaxing pastime why not become a member of the Melton community garden. Meet other people with the same interests, have something to be enthused about, as there’s nothing like watching and waiting to see the results of your work, time, nurturing and most of all the taste of home grown vegies and fruit… Not only these benefits but there’s a whole host of other aspects to be involved in, so make sure you read the pamphlet that Jenny, our secretary has emailed you. N.B. Don’t forget to attend the Farmer’s Market too. The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber The Melton Library would like to invite you to an evening to celebrate the music of Andrew Lloyd Webber. Her design portfolio includes projects both locally, throughout Australia, as well as internationally. Bronnie identifies as more of a homemaker rather than an interior designer.
