Lillian Falsen Villar
NAOTO TANAKA
Major: Biotechnology
Majors: International Agricultural Development, and Art History
When Lillian first arrived at UC Davis from Norway, she fell in love
with the bikes, the cows, the community… and the squirrels! But those
aren’t the reasons why she chose Davis. A biotechnology major,
Lillian picked Davis because, as she says, “UC Davis is a research
school that offers a clear bridge from the academic world to the
professional world. I am so excited for the opportunity to choose my
job and establish a career I love based on the quality of my education.”
Naoto Tanaka decided UC Davis was the school for him after a visit
to campus during Picnic Day. He enjoys the food, weather and
environmentally-friendly community. But Naoto says his favorite thing
about UC Davis is the global culture. “There is a little bit of every
culture on campus. You are able to diversify yourself and learn
a lot about other cultures while sharing your own with friendly and
approachable people.”
Lillian plans to spend her next three years working with faculty on an
undergraduate research project, writing a bachelor’s thesis,
studying abroad in Madrid so she can add Spanish to her
already extensive repertoire of languages and learning how to
salsa dance. She eventually wants to work in the health care industry
or research cancer, and feels grateful to be studying in the
United States.
Originally from Tokyo, Japan, and a double major in international agricultural development and art history, Naoto is
making the most of his time at UC Davis—biking through town,
volunteering at the residential gardens, interning as a sustainability
coordinator through University Dining Services, and taking part in
the UC Davis International Student Club’s Global Ambassadors buddy program. Next year, he hopes to study abroad in
Jerusalem, learn Arabic and earn his pilot’s license.
She offers these words of advice: “Don’t be afraid to leave
the comfortable bubble of home. There is a reason you received the
opportunity to study abroad. Go explore the world and
meet amazing people, and then apply what you learned to your
own community. At UC Davis, you are shaping the next steps of your
life, so make the most of it!”
Naoto has these words of advice: “Stay open minded, and
take every opportunity you are offered. Don’t be afraid to
share your own culture with people. The more you try things and
learn about others, the more you will get out of your experience
abroad.”

Howard Tseng
Sharanya Balasubramanian
Major: Biomedical Engineering
Major: Economics
Howard was born in Vietnam and grew up in Taiwan, but definitely
considers Davis his home. Upon arrival to campus, he learned
why so many students choose UC Davis. “As soon as I arrived for
freshman orientation, I noticed that everyone was very friendly.
Davis felt like a good environment to continue my education.”
Sharanya is focused on making a difference in people’s lives. An
economics major from Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India, her goal
to become a developmental economist for a non-governmental
organization (NGO) and help reduce poverty has begun here at
UC Davis.
A biomedical engineering major and a minor in technology management keep him busy, but he still finds time to hang
out with members of the Taiwanese Chinese Student Society,
conduct research with faculty, and learn new dance moves with
the Breakdance Club.
She chose Davis because, “everyone is so friendly and helpful.
I really like the laid-back atmosphere as opposed to the stress and
competitiveness in other colleges. UC Davis is a university where the
students actually enjoy going to classes and studying.”
Howard says, “When you are deciding on a school, think about
the next four years and how college is going to help you in the future;
look at the big picture. Also, make sure you go out and try things
that you otherwise wouldn’t find yourself doing. There are a lot of
opportunities to explore at UC Davis, so don’t limit yourself.”
Sharanya has her eye on milking a cow before she graduates and is
entertaining sky diving as a hobby. She spends most of her spare
time making many friends from various cultures
and ethnicities and enjoying, “the absolutely beautiful
campus” and downtown Davis.
