About the Midwest Rampage
The Midwest Rampage is a second-year Minor League football squad based out of
Webster City, Iowa. The Rampage came about because a core group of veteran semipro players from Webster City decided their own town would be the perfect place to
call home.
In January of 2010, the team held three different sets of tryouts which totaled 64
total players from 31 different towns. After all was said and done, 45 players representing 21 different Iowa cities made the roster; 23 players hailed from Webster City
and surrounding communities such as Kamrar, Williams, Eagle Grove, and Stanhope
while other players traveled from towns such as Manson, Humboldt, Fort Dodge, Mason City, Ames, and Des Moines. Even more amazing, several players came from as
far away as Sheldon and Iowa City.
The squad’s roster also contained players who previously earned either NAFL or
WFL All-Star status or who had played in various All-Star games such as the NAFL’s “All-American Bowl” in the Metrodome in Minnesota.
Furthermore, the Rampage boasted individuals who have been named All-Americans by the prestigious entity, Minor League Football News,
as well as one player, middle linebacker John Elkin, who was a national finalist for both the “Linebacker” and “Defensive Player of the Year”
awards by the same organization. Finally, throw in the fact that the Rampage had several players that had been playing Minor League football for over 5 years—well, it wasn’t an understatement to say that although they were a new team in 2010, they were very experienced.
In their inaugural season, the Rampage were members of the World Football League whose teams ranged in location from Iowa, Nebraska,
and Missouri all the way to Oklahoma, Texas, and Tennessee. For their first-ever game—a home contest against the Nebraska Wildcats that
took place on May 1—468 people came to watch and despite committing seven (7) turnovers, the Rampage barely lost in a 22-15 thriller that
literally came down to the last play of the game. In all, over 1,500 total fans attended
the team’s five home games and among many other things, witnessed a come-frombehind win on May 22 over the Capital City Crush, 20-18, as well as a dominating 33-6
performance over the Quad City Stallions—whom the Rampage narrowly defeated
earlier in the season, 8-2—on June 26.
While the Rampage finished 3-6 and failed to make the WFL playoffs, it’s noteworthy to mention that three of those losses were by 15 total points. Despite their overall
record, league coaches recognized the play of the Rampage and a total of 9 players
earned All-WFL honors including 1st Team honorees Jared Bell (DE), Brian Miller
(DT), Elkin, and Andy Sowle (FS) while 2nd Team selections were Travis Schutt (OT),
Caleb Schweiger (OG), Jake Thoma (RB), Dan Schaa (RB), and Dirk Timm (DB). Defensively, the Rampage had the third-best unit in the entire WFL as they only allowed
90 yards rushing and 94 yards passing per game.
Six Rampage players also earned All-American honors by MLFN and included 1st Team player Timm at cornerback while Miller landed
on the 2nd Team as a defensive tackle; both players were also named as finalists for the national “Player of the Year” award in their respective positions which makes three Rampage players who have earned this distinction since 2009. Honorable Mention All-American honoree
also included Schaa and seemingly annual picks Bell, Elkin, and Sowle.
During their 2010 campaign, the Rampage also participated in several community or charitable events such as the Relay For Life Cancer
Fundraising event in which the team had a dunk tank while also auctioning off a helmet and custom-made jersey. The squad also partook
in the town of Williams’ Fourth of July parade and also appeared in the Hamilton County Fair Parade. In late-November through midDecember, the Rampage—along with Webster City Medical Center—also co-sponsored a Toy Drive to benefit local kids.
In an effort to better serve semi-pro football teams located in and around Iowa, the Rampage partnered with the Des Moines Blaze and
formed the Midwest Football Alliance for the 2011 season. The Mission of the MFA
is very similar to that of the Rampage: to provide quality, competitive, and entertaining football to players, fans, and patrons of member teams. The MFA currently
consists of 8 teams and its season will run from May through July and will conclude
in early August with playoffs and a championship game.
Overall, the main goal of the Midwest Rampage is to always strive for excellence
in all areas while providing fans, supporters, and patrons with hard-hitting, competitive, and family-oriented football. Furthermore, the Midwest Rampage aim to give
men ages 18-45 a positive outlet as they revisit the gridiron of America’s favorite
sport.
Simply put... Welcome to Rampage Country!
ABOUT THE MIDWEST RAMPAGE

2010 Game-by-Game Recap
May 1 vs. Nebraska Wildcats (Webster City, IA)
(L) 22-15
Inaugural game for franchise witnessed by 468 fans
who saw Rampage commit 7 total turnovers including
a pair of mishandled and blocked punts. QB Clint
Howard was 15/36 for 226 yards and 2 TDs while
WR Kevin Kannuan had 4 receptions for 101 yards
and 2 TDs. On defense, DE Jared Bell racked up 12
tackles.
May 8 vs. Des Moines Blaze (West Des Moines, IA)
(L) 36-12
Rampage take 6-0 lead on strength of running game
after FS Andy Sowle intercepted a Blaze pass on their
opening drive. The Blaze then score 26 unanswered
points in the 2nd quarter thanks to several Rampage
punt errors. The second half is mostly a stalemate
as each team scores a touchdown. RB Jake Thoma
rushes for 101 yards and a TD while MLB John Elkin
collects 12 tackles and forces 2 fumbles.
May 15 vs. Capital City Crush (Webster City, IA)
(W) 20-18
During second home game, Rampage lead 6-0 at halftime but punt issues in 2nd half allow Crush to score
18 straight points. However, the Rampage rally during last 6 minutes of the game to notch first win in
team history. Howard 10/29 for 153 yards and 3 TDs
and Thoma rushes for 127 yards while on defense Elkin and OLB Darren Holkamp each have 9 tackles.
May 22 vs. Quad City Stallions (Rock Island, IL)
(W) 8-2
On first possession of game Howard sacked in end
zone as Quad City takes 2-0 lead. What follows next
is now known as the birth of the Black Plague Defense that literally shuts down Stallions’ offense and
although Rampage offense continually moves ball, it
doesn’t find paydirt until 3 minutes remain in game.
Howard is 11/20 for 165 yards while both Elkin and
Sowle each have 14 tackles in second straight win.
June 5 vs. Nebraska Wildcats (Ralston, NE)
(L) 27-6
On the opening possession of the game, not only does
CB Dirk Timm knock out the Wildcats’ starting quarterback, but intercepts the next pass and returns it
29 yards for a TD as the Rampage take a 6-0 lead.
However, a 67-yard field goal puts Nebraska up 10-6
at halftime. Still down 10-6 in the 4th, the Rampage
advance to the 1-yard line but Howard’s next pass is
intercepted and returned 100 yards for the score to
end any chance of a Rampage comeback.
June 12 vs. Des Moines Blaze (Webster City, IA)
(L) 48-0
Playing without their starting quarterback, the Rampage intend to rely on their defense to take on the 5-1
Blaze but instead find themselves down 35-0 at halftime as the eventual WFL Runner-up hand the Rampage their worst loss of the 2010 season.
June 19 vs. Capital City Crush (Lincoln, NE)
(L) 20-13
Traveling short-handed on both offense and defense,
the Rampage play scrappy and take a 7-0 halftime
lead that eventually turns into a 13-6 advantage with
6 minutes left in game. However, two breakdowns on
defense during the last 3 minutes lead to third-straight
loss. QB Dan Schaa passes for 133 yards and a TD
while Bell and DT Brian Miller each have 2 sacks.
June 26 vs. Quad City Stallions (Webster City, IA)
(W) 33-6
With temperatures soaring above 105 degrees, the
Rampage find themselves down 6-0 after allowing
Stallions to march 96-yards on their opening possession. However, Rampage turns up heat and own 19-6
halftime lead before adding two more 2nd half scores.
Thoma rushes for 101 yards and 2 TDs while Kannuan adds another 118 yards on the ground. Defensively, Sowle had 9 tackles and Bell had 2 QB sacks.
July 9 vs. Bridge City Knights (Webster City, IA)
(L) 7-6
A bad Rampage punt on their first possession give the
Knights the ball at the 25 and 5 plays later they score
to lead 7-0. However, the Rampage immediately respond with their own score but miss the extra point.
Despite advancing inside the Knights’ 10 yard three
different times, they fail to score any points and lose
their third game of season by 7 or less points.

GAME-BY-GAME RECAP
New goal posts via Webster City Hotel/Motel Tax Grant
On November 30 of 2010, the Webster City
Hotel/Motel Tax Board overheard a proposal by
Midwest Rampage Team President/CEO John
Elkin and Vice President/GM Darin Eklund for
funds to purchase new goal posts for their home
field inside the Bob Buckley Track at Webster
City High School because the current posts on
the field were neither safe nor regulation. Several weeks later on December 13, the Board
made a recommendation to the City Council
who then approved of the grant to the Rampage
and the organization was granted full benefits of
$3,539. Also included in the purchase the new
goal post were a pair of free pads customized for
the Rampage.
“Basically,” said Team President/CEO John
Elkin, “as 1 of 8 Minor League teams in Iowa
and the second-smallest town to have a team,
we want to be taken seriously and that starts
with our facilities: teams from big cities like
Davenport, Des Moines, Council Bluffs, and
Lincoln (NE) aren’t going to want to come play
us if we don’t have the basic amenities a team
should have... so we thank the H/M Tax Board
The old goal posts at Rampage Field which were
neither regulation nor safe for use.
New ggoal posts thanks to Webster City Hotel Motel
Tax Board and Peterson Construction.
for their help in allowing us to take the next step
of achieving success.”
The new goal posts were installed by Peterson
Construction during the middle of April; while
Peterson Construction donated the labor and
machines to complete the task, the Rampage
paid for the concrete and other needed materials. “We also want to express our sincere gratitude to Peterson Construction for their part in
helping us improve the facilities that not only
will benefit the Rampage, but also the Youth
Sports Foundation,” said Elkin.

fans, and patrons with both pride and dedication. For its inaugural 2011 season, the MFA consists of the eight (8) total teams from the
following states: Iowa: Midwest Rampage, Des Moines Blaze, Bridge City Knights, Quad City Stallions, Dubuque Bruisers, Iowa
Sharks. Nebraska: Capital City Crush. South Dakota: Sioux Falls Stallions
The MFA playoffs will consist of a three-round tournament in which a 1st Round, Semifinal, and Championship game will be played.
Six (6) total teams will qualify with the top two seeds having a ‘bye’ the 1st Round. For each contest, teams will be paired according to

HEAD COACH & OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR
Chris Hansen
Rampage Head Coach Chris Hansen, in his second season of leading the Black & Orange, is a
native of Racine, Wisconsin, where he was an athlete for St. Catherine’s High School. Chris attended
Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa, where he played offensive guard for the Duhawks from 1996-98 after transferring from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. After graduating from Loras with a degree
in Sports Management, Coach Hansen then served as a graduate assistant for his alma mater where he
coached the defensive line in 1999 and the offensive line in 2000.
Coach Hansen then went to St. Cloud State (Minnesota) to not only complete his masters degree, but
to also serve as an offensive linemen coach from 2000-01. Chris then was named as the offensive line
coach at Dana College (Nebraska) and coached there from 2002-03 before moving to Austin College
(Texas) where he served as both the offensive coordinator and offensive linemen coach from 2003-05.
In their inaugural 2010 season, Hansen led the Rampage to a 3-6 record as members of the Heartland
Division in the new World Football League. The squad lost its first two games before recording its first
franchise win, a thrilling 20-18 come-from-behind victory at home over the Capital City Crush (Lincoln,
NE) on May 15. The following week the team traveled to Rock Island, Illinois, to face the Quad City
Stallions; down 2-0 after their first offensive series in the game, the two teams battled back-and-forth
the rest of the game until just under four minutes remained when the Rampage scored a touchdown and successfully converted their two-point attempt to finish with an
8-2 victory. Five weeks later the Rampage then thoroughly dismantled the Stallions with a 33-6 win at home.
While Hansen’s expectations for the first season actually exceeded as his goal was just to be competitive, a large portion of the veteran players (who had been in the
WFL playoffs the previous year as members of another team) considered the 2010 campaign disappointing. “The core veterans
set the bar almost too high for themselves,” Hansen recalls, “and it’s easy for them to forget that while many of them had experience playing together, the Rampage was a new team with a new scheme as well as identity.”
Also often overlooked is the fact that the Rampage lost three games by 7, 7, and 1 point, respectively, and that 8 starters
suffered season-ending injuries either from practice through the Game 4 including the quarterback and several key offensive
linemen. However, the squad had a total of nine (9) players named to the All-WFL team including four first team selections as
the “Black Plague Defense” only allowed a meager 90 yards rushing and 94 yards passing per game. Furthermore, running back
Jake rushed for a career-high 717 yards in Hansen’s spread option offense.
“Despite all of the injuries and the learning curve that happened last season,” Hansen added, “I really believe that Year 2 for
the Rampage will be much more successful in terms of wins and losses. Really, a handful of plays resulted in the difference of
us being 8-1 or 7-2 last year.”
A resident of Webster City, Chris is employed with Merck Co. as a Customer Representative. He and his wife, Emily, have
three children: Ella, Mia, and Dane.
DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR
WIDE RECEIVERS COACH
SPECIAL TEAMS COORDINATOR
Marty Hart
Bill Smith
Chris Wood
While Marty Hart may be entering his first season as the new
Defensive Coordinator of the Midwest Rampage, he is no stranger to
either coaching football or defense
as he is the former head coach and
defensive coordinator of the Iowa
Eagles, a team formerly based out
of Manson, IA.
Coach Hart led the Eagles from 2006-10 and thus
coached many current Rampage players who were
former Eagles. Under his guidance, Hart coached
13 All-Americans from 2007-09 including 1st Team
selections Joe Gilbert (OT), Jake Thoma (RB), John
Elkin (MLB), and Chris McNiel (WR).
Coach Hart has a wealth of coaching experience
at many different levels including a stint for the professional indoor football team the Lincoln Lightning (Lincoln, NE) as well as stops at Iowa Central
Community College (Ft. Dodge, IA) and Ellsworth
Community College (Iowa Falls, IA). Hart has also
coached for several high school including HubbardRadcliff, Prairie Valley of Gowrie, and Manson
Northwest Webster.
A graduate of Manson Sr. High in Manson, Coach
Hart attended and played 1 season at Tarkio College
(MO). Marty is married to the former Deborah Jepsen
and they have 2 children: Amanda and Dillon.
Wide Receivers coach Billy
Smith is a native of Webster City
and former Lynx player whose
play as a wide receiver is still part
of Purple & Gold lore and still is
the leading receiver in total receptions and yards. His love for the
game of football is very evident as
he as been coaching the 5th and 6th grade programs
in Webster City for several years as well as becoming
part of the Rampage in their inaugural 2010 season.
Coach Smith enters his second season as a Wide
Receivers coach and Game Management Director
for the Rampage. Last season, Coach Smith assisted
Coach Hansen in many different areas as the two managed a team consisting of 48 players... a task that was
often overwhelming on game day. However, with the
addition of several new coaches, Smith will be able to
focus more on his positional and operational duties.
After graduating from WCHS in 1984, Billy played
football at Iowa Central Community College for one
season. Professionally, Billy has been in sales the past
19 years and he also currently is the Manager of Kum
& Go in Webster City. Coach Smith is also the uncle
of Rampage offensive lineman Jay Smith who has
been playing Minor League football since 2008.
Billy and his wife, Lisa, have four children: Cody,
Courtni, Sierra, and Jacob.
Chris Wood, a Manson native, is also new to the Rampage
this season but like Marty Hart, is
very familiar with both coaching
special teams as well as a large
chunk of the Rampage’s roster
including return specialist Chris
McNiel. Wood was the Special
Teams Coordinator for the Iowa Eagles from 200610 and also served as the team’s Game Management
Director. He has been associated with football for a
number of years and along with his long-time friend
Marty Hart, are both much welcomed and needed in
Rampage Country.
In 2009, Wood’s special teams were a main reason the Eagles qualified for the WFL playoffs as his
squad--specifically punt returns--helped the Eagles
win several close games including a 21-18 overtime
win over the Quad City Stallions and a 16-14 comefrom-behind victory over the River City Raiders.
It is also notable to point out that during the ‘09
campaign, Woods’ punt and kickoff teams didn’t allow a single return for a score and no more than three
returns for longer than 30 yards.
Coach Wood played high school football at Manson
Northwest Webster High School from 1989-92 and resides in his hometown of Manson with his four children: Shelby, Keaton, Emma, and Cameron.
