Football players recognized at annual banquet

Carlinville High School’s football team held a year-end banquet
at the school Dec. 7. Following
a meal in the school’s cafeteria,
players were recognized in the
gymnasium.
This year’s varsity team wound
up with an 9-2 record and set a
record for points scored.
Varsity awards
Senior Joeb Easterday was
named the team’s most valuable
player. He completed 129 of 201
passes for 1,844 yards and had
19 touchdown passes. Easterday
also carried the football 68 times
for 321 yards and four touchdown
runs.
The 2014 Most Improved Player award went to Max Chapman.
Offensive awards at the varsity
level went to players as follows.
• Kinney Myles, MVP-Running
backs: Myles finished with 186
carries for 1,506 yards and 27
touchdowns;
• Garet Gwillim, MVP-Running backs: Gwillim tallied 718
rushing yards on 96 carries and
reached the end zone nine times;
• Jacob Dixon, MVP-Wide receiver/tight end: Dixon finished
with 41 catches for 596 yards and
six touchdowns; and
• Ben Rogers, MVP-Wide receiver/tight end: Rogers had 34
receptions for 336 yards and four
touchdowns.
Defensive awards at the varsity
level were presented as follows.
• Broedy Long, MVP-Defensive Lineman: Long collected 59
tackles and eight tackles for loss;
• Jay Broom, MVP-Defensive
Lineman: He finished with 39
total tackles and four tackles for
loss;
• Jacob Dixon, MVP-Linebackers: Dixon had 71 tackles, three
tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks and
four interceptions;
• Ben Rogers, MVP-Defensive
Backs: Rogers contributed 35
tackles and returned his only interception for a touchdown;
• Elijah Barber, MVP-Defensive Backs: Barber finished with
38 tackles, one tackle for loss,
four interceptions plus a fumble
recovery;
• R.J. Picotte, Scout Team
Player: Picotte finished the season with 12 tackles and two tackles for loss;
• Brady Jamieson, Scout Team
Player
• Elijah Barber, Special Teams
Player: Barber returned 13 punts
for 241 yards.
Other statistical highlights
Myles led this year’s varsity
squad with 1,644 all-purpose
yards. Dixon finished with 1,353
all-purpose yards, including 448
on kickoff returns. Dixon, in addition to setting a record for most
receptions in a season (41), led
the team in receiving yards (596)
and touchdown catches (six).
Gwillim contributed 1,008 allpurpose yards. Gwillim, a linebacker in addition to running
back, led the team in sacks. He
had nine of the team’s 21 quarterback sacks during the 2014
season.
Senior Zach Rogers led the
team with 74 total tackles. He
was followed by Dixon (71) and
sophomore Dylan Chism (63).
Long contributed eight of the
team’s 34 tackles for loss.
Dixon contributed five of the
team’s 14 interceptions. Others
intercepting passes were Barber
(four), Chism (two), Jessy Robinson, Ben Rogers and Gwillim.
Kicker Hayden Thompson converted 21 of 25 extra point attempts.
The team finished with 49 rushing touchdowns, 20 receiving
touchdowns plus one touchdown
apiece on a fumble recovery, interception return, punt and kickoff returns.
In total, this year’s team had
73 touchdowns, an average of
6.6 per game. The Cavaliers finished with 509 points scored in
11 games, an average of 46.3 per
contest.
