LOUDON QUARTERBACK CLUB Riceville Wildcats VS Loudon Redskins August 27, 2011 Week 2 of the 2011 Sequoyah Conference football season finds your Loudon Quarterback Club War Party hosting Riceville for a feline huntin‟ contest at the Wildcats expense. Can the LQC Red Clad Warriors successively de-fang the visiting Wildcats? Here kitty, kitty… Two years ago the Wildcats embarrassed us (LQC), by winning three out of four games – at OUR home, last season we traveled to Riceville and returned the favor! Can the home standing Redskins hold serve? That‟s just what we did, taking three out of four contests in the home opener. The lone defeat came in the first contest of the day as your Loudon Crickets fell from the un-beaten ranks in overtime by the score of 8-16. Story by: Jeff McQueen “The Voice of the Hill”, editor/publisher of loudonfootball.com and loudonqbclub.com Loudon Quarterback Club takes three of four from visiting Riceville in home opener! CRICKETS Riceville 16, Crickets 8 Debra Baker #13 Josh Gonzalez running the football, Josh had 11 carries for 80 yards and a 2-point conversion. The Loudon Captains were #3 Semy Turner, #13 Josh Gonzalez, and #14 Simon Hawkins. Riceville won the coin toss and deferred until the second half. After a scoreless first half, where both teams played keep-a-way from each other, your Loudon Crickets finally got loose on a sustained drive in the third period that was capped off with a 26 yard burst by #5 Logan Oody! With the conversion by #13 Josh Gonzalez, Loudon looked to be holding a commanding lead. However, the Wildcats had other ideas, as they tied up the score late in the fourth quarter. Regulation ended with each team tied at eight points each – on to overtime. Riceville got the ball first from the 10 yard line and scored on the first play and also tacked-on the 2-point conversion. Loudon had four plays to match the Wildcats score and force a second OT. Our Crickets fought valiantly, but penalties and fumbles keep Loudon in down and distance trouble, failing to score on fourth down awarded the victory to the Wildcats by the score of 8-16. Scoring Summary: 3rd Q: #5 Logan Oody, 26 yd TD #13 Josh Gonzalez, 2-pt conv Top defenders were again #62 Devan Nichols with five tackles and (1) sack for -2 yds, while #3 Semy Turner and #14 Chase Chastain added three tackles each. Your Loudon Redskin Crickets (1-1) rushed for one touchdown and a 2-point conversion on 31 carries for 229 yards, but fall in OT by the score of 8-16. Drew posted 15 carries for 120 yards and made five tackles. The Loudon Captains were #5 Donavon Blankenship, #16 Noah Burnette, #25 Drew Jackson, and #50 Emerson Trip. Riceville won the coin toss and wanted the football first. A strong dose of #25 Drew Jackson all day (15 carries for 120 yds) required the Wildcat defense to expend a great deal of energy. With Riceville keying on Jackson (his former teammates), #16 Noah Burnette was able to slip out around the left end and he was gone! 42 yards later the Hoppers were up six to zip. That was a great recipe that was repeated in the third quarter with Burnette posting another long touchdown from 35 yards out. Both conversion attempts failed however, leaving the final tally at 12-0. Scoring Summary: 1st Q: #16 Noah Burnette, 42 yd TD 3rd Q: #16 Noah Burnette, 35 yd TD Top defenders included #24 Kyle Smallen with six tackles; contributing five tackles each were #56 Konar Baker, #25 Drew Jackson, #7 Gage Henson, and #16 Noah Burnette; stepping up and posting four knock-downs was #50 Emerson Tripp. Your Loudon Redskin Hoppers (2-0), pull out the victory in a game that wasn‟t as close as the score indicated, by the final score of 12-0. The first quarter came and went scoreless, to start the scoring in the second period, #30 “Mad” Max Melton bullied in from one yard out, with #7 Mason Small adding the 2-point conversion. Things really heated up when #23 Jeremy Wiggins ripped off a 53 yard scoring strike just before halftime! The extra points were posted by #17 Cameron Baker. Not to be out done, #5 Dawson Blankenship wanted in on the action, and launched a 37 yard touchdown of his own. The final two Redskin points of the game were put on the board by “Mad” Max. Riceville managed a late score in the fourth period. Debra Baker #7 Mason Small breaking tackles! Mason was good on three carries for nine yards and a 2-point conversion, and four tackles. Baker also contributed a sack for -2 yards. Rushing accounted for 229 yards on 29 rushes including three touchdowns and three 2-point conversions. The „Stangs (2-0), with their frogman offense, can now turn their attention to their next opponent – the Greenback Cherokees‟. Greenback is the pre-season darling in the Cutter Division. The Wildcats won the coin toss and wanted the football. Debra Baker #39 Tray Moats hauling in a 19 yard touchdown pass! The Loudon Indians (2-0) continued their dominance in league play with a resounding victory over the Riceville Wildcat Juniors to the tune of 30-0 in only three quarters! The “Mercy Rule” was voted out at the pre-season Conference meeting this past June, so all games are supposed to last for the four full eight minute quarters. However, facing the daunting task of climbing up Redskin Mountain and already down 30-0, the Rice Head Coach ran up the white flag. It seems that the Riceville Junior Team is small in stature and small in numbers, and the Coach didn‟t want to risk getting anyone hurt. I wonder if a lot of the Rice players have defected to Athens? This was a relatively sloppy game with lots of penalties on both sides; the Indians were penalized five times for fifty yards including two unsportsmanlike penalties and a player ejection. “Smash mouth… that‟s how we roll!” is the Indians‟ mantra. But today #19 Jacob Crabtree was a perfect 7 of 7 passing, and played pitch and catch with #39 Tray Moats and #42 Cody Townsend – this lethal combination was good for 89 yards including three touchdowns and three 2-point conversions! Scoring Summary: 1st Q: #39 Tray Moats, 19 yd TD reception from #19 Jacob Crabtree 2nd Q: #19 Jacob Crabtree, 1 yd TD #42 Cody Townsend, 2-pt conv reception from #19 Jacob Crabtree #42 Cody Townsend, 14 yd TD reception from #19 Jacob Crabtree #42 Cody Townsend, 2-pt conv reception from #19 Jacob Crabtree 3rd Q: #42 Cody Townsend, 16 yd TD reception from #19 Jacob Crabtree #5 Noah “Boucher” Lowe, 2-pt conv Defensively, the Redskin defense harassed and pounded the Wildcat ball carries for three solid quarters. Top defenders were #64 Richie “The Bear” Trout with five tackles and a sack for -6 yards; #76 Jesse Kerr added three stops; excellent Special Teams play resulted in #7 Mikey “Michelin Man” Chastain blocking a punt; while #20 Brody “Roughrider” Houston and #19 Jacob “The Admiral” Crabtree poached errant Rice aerials (INTs). Rushing accounted for only 74 yards on 23 attempts including one touchdown and one 2-point conversion. Great news! Passing made up the difference with 89 yards on 7 of 7 passing for three touchdowns and three 2-point conversions. Total offense was 163 yards. Not bad for only three quarters!
