Welcome
Dear Pius X High School Alumni, Parents and Friends,
It is with excitement that I come back to Lincoln and Pius X High School after thirteen years away, three as principal
of Falls City Sacred Heart and the last ten years as superintendent of Hastings Catholic Schools. From 1991-1994, I was an
assistant at Saint Joseph’s parish and taught sophomore and senior religion at Pius X. Presently, I am in residence at Saint
Patrick’s parish in Havelock, where I served as a deacon. My first weekend at Saint Patrick’s, one of the “senior” lectors
stated that he remembered me and in fact I had given him a ride in my car for some reason or another. Though I didn’t
remember it, I was impressed by his recall. He then surmised that the event must have been five or six years ago. When
I responded with a good laugh, “Nineteen years ago,” he assured me that we were both getting old. So, I return to Pius X
older and hopefully wiser, too!
The student population has grown by about three hundred students since I was here. Of course the faculty, staff and the facilities have increased with
the student population. Many of the faculty and staff whom I knew before are still here. It is still the commitment and dedication of our teachers, staff and
families to quality Catholic education that makes Pius X High School such a remarkable school. That commitment and dedication was recognized by the
Catholic High School Honor Roll. The Honor Roll is an annual initiative designed to recognize and encourage excellence in Catholic secondary education.
For the second year in a row, Pius X was touted as one of the Top 50 Catholic High Schools in the United States and the only one in Nebraska. Nearly 1,300
Catholic high schools were invited to apply for consideration of this distinct honor which is based on high degrees of excellence in academics, Catholic
identity, and civic education. With the guidance of their distinguished advisory board of Catholic college presidents and noted Catholic scholars, only 50
Catholic High Schools were chosen. This award honors our teachers and students in particular, but also our staff, administrators and parents.
Pius X is an excellent school, yet our tuition is one of the lowest in the country and therefore affordable to virtually all Catholic families in the greater
Lincoln area. This says so much about the pastors and parishioners who support the school to the tune of about 51 percent of our $4.4 million dollar budget.
Recently, I was visiting with friends of mine with three small children from Seattle who wanted to send their children to a Catholic school. It would have cost
a prohibitive $12,000 to send their oldest to kindergarten. Wow! We are blessed here in Lincoln! Our tuition ranges from $1,250 to $1,550.
I offer a sincere thanks to all the alumni, parents, grandparents, parishioners and friends of Pius X who contributed so generously to the A Tradition
of Faith campaign. The new construction was virtually completed for the beginning of the school year; the six new classrooms, new library and new lunch
serving/commons area are great additions to the school. The income from the campaign has paid for nearly all of the $3.1 million construction costs and over
$600,000 has been returned to the parishes. By year’s end, income will begin to be channeled to the endowment fund and to pay off part of the purchase of
the Clark Jeary property adjacent to Pius X. Your generosity to this campaign and to the Annual Appeal (formerly Phone-a-thon) keeps our school growing
and our tuition affordable. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Presently, fifteen Pius X graduates are studying for the priesthood, and three Pius X graduates are in religious formation. Sr. Margaretta (Kathleen)
Dalton (class of ’95) recited her final vows this summer with the Sisters of Saint Francis of the Martyr Saint George. What a great blessing for the Catholic
Church that these young men and women are responding to His call to priesthood and religious life.
The fall activities have been fun and exciting. Our pro-life group participated in the Genocide Awareness Project on the University of Nebraska–Lincoln
campus. Several of our juniors and seniors went on or worked on the TEC (Teens Encounter Christ) retreat and about seventy-five members of the FCT
(Fellowship of Christian Teens) group are gearing up for their two-day retreat in early November. Our band has competed well in many marching contests.
Our fall play, Neil Simon’s “Fools,” was a wonderful performance. Our boys’ and girls’ cross country teams were state champions in class B. Our boys’ tennis
team placed third at state, and our girls’ golf team placed sixth. The girls’ softball team competed well into districts, and although our football team’s record
is under .500, they competed well and had several heart-break losses. Our volleyball team is ranked number one in class B as they get ready for districts and
state, trying to defend their state championship. As you can see, Pius X High School is buzzing with activity and progress. (I thought I was busy – I am not
sure how these students do it all.)
Lastly and most importantly, Pius X is God’s school; our opening day All-School Mass and Founders’ Day Mass on Oct. 1 exemplified that. I am so
edified by our students’ understanding of and reverence for the great mystery of God’s love for them in the Sacraments. Our students have an opportunity
to go to daily Mass and have Mass weekly with their religion class. We are so blessed and have so much in which to be thankful. Please continue to pray for
our students, faculty and staff and all our families as we seek to live each day as disciples of Christ. May God bless us all.
Sincerelyy Yours in Christ,,

Community gathers to celebrate new addition at Pius X High School
More than 1,000 supporters filled
the new Commons area and gym at Pius
X High School on Aug. 16, to celebrate
the success of the A Tradition of Faith
Campaign, which was the most ambitious
fundraising campaign ever undertaken on
behalf of the school, raising just under $16
million from almost 4,000 contributors.
The new Commons area
is 11, 650 square feet. It
serves as a lunchroom and
entrance and gathering
area for the gymnasium.
The evening began with a blessing
and dedication of the new Commons
and six new classrooms, by the Most
Reverend Bishop Fabian Bruskewitz,
Bishop of Lincoln. Bob Bryant, Master
of Ceremonies, welcomed everyone
and thanked them for their generosity
in making the day possible. “Because of
you, Catholic education will continue to
flourish in Lincoln,” stated Bryant.
The new Commons area is 11,650
square feet, which is 41 percent larger than
its previous space. It serves as a lunchroom
and entrance and gathering area for the
gymnasium. Thanks to the proceeds from
the campaign and the 2007 BOLT event,
we were able to build a 600 foot addition
for a kitchen area, so Pius X has begun
offering healthy lunches every day! We are
so grateful to those who have committed
their time, talents and treasure to make
this dream a reality.

were overwhelmed by the true spirit of
generosity shown by the Pius community,
the Catholic Community and the
Lincoln community at large. Individuals,
corporations, foundations, and individual
parishes helped make this campaign a
tremendous success. We are truly grateful
that the generosity of so many allowed us
to raise $16 million dollars.”
Following the blessing and dedication
ceremony, guests enjoyed tours of the
school and a social with hors d’oeuvres
from Premier Catering.

Pius X receives national recognition
On Oct. 17, the Catholic High School Honor Roll announced its
fourth annual selection of the best 50 Catholic secondary schools in
the United States. For the second year in a row, Pius X High School
has been selected for this prestigious honor. The Honor Roll is an
annual list of the top 50 Catholic high schools in the United States,
where schools are examined on the criteria of academic excellence,
Catholic identity, and civic education. The Honor Roll is a powerful
hools to
resource for parents and a great opportunity for schools
receive much deserved recognition.
The primary goal of the Honor Roll is to
encourage schools to educate students as effectively
as possible, in a way that integrates Catholic faith
and prepares students for active engagement with
the world. As a constructive competition, the Honor
Roll provides insight into the character of Catholic
secondary education and calls everyone to improvee
ca’s
the academic and spiritual formation given to America’s
youth. In promoting rigorous education, the Honor Roll desires
to better prepare students for fruitful vocations in politics, business,
and the Church.
“What a wonderful recognition of the extraordinary dedication
and commitment of our faculty, staff, students, administrators and
parents,” said Fr. James Meysenburg, Pius X Superintendent. “I am so
proud of the Pius X High School community. I am especially grateful
to our Catholic parish families who so generously support Pius X.
This honor is a tribute to the many people who have given so much
to provide our students with the opportunity to excel in every aspect
of their lives.”
Pius X High School currently has over 1,000 students in grades
9-12. Tuition is one of the lowest in the country as Pius X strives to
offer an excellent Catholic education that is affordable to all students
in the city of Lincoln.
Bishop Fabian Bruskewitz of the Diocese of Lincoln said he is
grateful that Pius X High School has been named to the Honor Roll
again this year. “I am grateful that Pius X Catholic High School has
earned a place on the 2007 Catholic High School Honor Roll as one
of the 50 best Catholic high schools in the United States,” said Bishop
Bruskewitz. “This recognition is well-deserved and I applaud the
administrators, teachers, parents and students for their dedication
and devotion. Their commitment to quality Catholic education has
helped make Pius X Catholic High School a success.”
“For over 50 years Pius X High School has been blessed by the
quality faculty, staff, students, parents and parish families that God
has brought to our school,” said Tom Korta, Pius X Principal. “I am
grateful that the Catholic High School Honor Roll has again affirmed
the work we are trying to accomplish in ‘Restoring all things in Christ.’
5 Pius Connections
36979.indd Sec1:5
This honor is one to be shared by all who have contributed their time,
talent and treasure to making Pius X High School the best it can be.”
The Honor Roll is produced in consultation with a national
advisory board comprised of Catholic college presidents and noted
Catholic scholars. Advisory board member Rev. John Schlegel,
President of Creighton University, said the Honor Roll is significant
for Cat
Catholic education. “Catholic high schools that excel at
for
forming
students in the faith and at teaching them to
think critically and act virtuously are a great asset
to the Church,” said Schlegel. “Not only do these
schools deserve to be recognized, but they should
also be imitated by all Catholic schools.”
All of America’s nearly 1,300 Catholic high schools
were invited to apply to the Honor Roll by completing
th
three detailed surveys, indicating that inclusion in the
Hon
Honor Roll requires exceptional merit in each of the areas
measured. This balanced approach assesses a school’s adherence
to the Church’s educational calling, where the best schools offer more
than the strong academic preparation Catholic education is known
for. Rather, the best schools also have vibrant Catholic identities and
offer sound civic training that help prepare students to live their faith
in the world.
To see a listing of the top 50 schools, as well as lists of the top 25
schools in each category, visit www.chshonor.org.
St. Pius X Legacy Society
When we depart this life to the next, we won’t be remembered
by the clothes we wore, the kind of vehicles we drove or the houses
we lived in. Rather, we will be remembered by the impact we have
made on others.
Our St. Pius X Legacy Society is a group of individuals and
couples who have come forward and shared the wonderful news that
they plan to remember Pius X with a planned gift and promote the
idea of planned giving toward our school. There are no membership
fees or meetings, and the specific amount of the gift does not need
to be disclosed when informing Pius X. This group is invited twice
a year for Mass and social time. If you would like to become a
member of the St. Pius X Legacy Society, please contact Fr. James
Meysenburg at 402-488-0931 or Michelle Birkel 402-488-1046.

Distinguished Stewardship Award
On behalf of Pius X High School, Fr. Liam Barr presented the First Annual Distinguished Stewardship Award to Keith and
Pat May at the A Tradition of Faith celebration on Aug. 16. Nominations were sought earlier this past year for individuals who
have demonstrated exemplary service to Pius X High School, been role models within the community, are leaders in fulfilling our
mission to “Restore All Things in Christ” and who share their gifts of time, talent and treasure with Pius X.
Keith and Pat have both been longtime volunteers for both Pius X High School and for their parish, the Cathedral of
the Risen Christ. The Mays are both 1966 graduates of Pius X. All four of their children, Jennifer, Laura, Aaron and Caitlin,
also graduated from Pius X. Keith has been a Pius X board member since 1982, and has served as parish chairperson of the
“Continuing the Commitment” campaign. Keith and Pat were board chairs of the “Embrace the Future” campaign, and have both served on the BOLT committee
throughout the years.
Beyond the Pius X community, Keith and Pat served as chair couple of the 1999 diocesan “Crossing the Threshold” campaign, and are both members of the Catholic
business organization, Legatus. Keith is also a long time member of the Lincoln Serra Club, and past member of the Diocesan Foundation Board. Congratulations Keith
and Pat!
2008 Distinguished Stewardship
Award nomination
IRA gift opportunities
Donors age 70 ½ and older can still make a tax-free gift from
their IRA, BUT you only have until the end of 2007!
If you are age 70 ½ and older, the Federal government permits
you to donate money from your IRA directly to Pius X in 2007
without claiming any income or paying any tax on the withdrawal.
These tax-free rollover gifts could be $1,000, $10,000 or any
amount up to $100,000. There are a few important rules to note:
Your gift counts toward your required minimum
distribution for 2007
Your IRA administrator needs to complete a check payable
to Pius X High School
Married couples can each make a gift from their IRA
You do not receive a tax deduction for your gift
Our Development Office can supply you with a form to
send to your IRA administrator. Hurry! The law expires at the
end of this year so we strongly recommend you contact your
administrator prior to Dec. 10, if you are planning on making a
charitable donation before the end of the year!
If you are younger than 70 1/2, you can make future gifts
from your IRA to the Pius X Foundation or charity of your
choice.
Bequest ~ designate Pius X as a beneficiary of your IRA. If
you want to leave your IRA to children or family, you can
give a percentage of your IRA to the school and the
remainder to family.
Testamentary IRA Charitable Trust ~ you can establish a
charitable remainder trust as the beneficiary of your IRA
upon your death. Your trust can provide income to family
members for a period of years and then distribute to Pius X.
Nominations are being sought for friends of Pius X High School who
deserve to be recognized for their outstanding service to Pius X through
their gifts of time, talent and treasure. A good steward is one who receives
God’s gifts gratefully, cherishes those gifts, shares them with others and
returns a portion to the Lord. Nominations for this award must be received
by May 31, 2008. The recipient(s) will be announced and awarded at our
Friends of Pius X Appreciation Reception in August 2008. We are interested
in individuals who:
Have demonstrated exemplary service to Pius X High School
Have been a role model within their community
Are leaders in fulfilling our mission to “Restore All Things in Christ”
Share their gifts of time, talent and treasure with Pius X

Introducing the Annual Appeal
“As a Pius X Foundation Board member, I remain committed to providing a quality Catholic education that remains affordable to
all families in Lincoln. The Annual Appeal will allow The Foundation to keep the tuition affordable by providing an increase in funding
to Pius X. God has given me the ability to do my share in making an annual commitment to the Foundation.”
-Robert Bryant, Pius X Foundation Board of Directors Chair.
The 2007-2008 Annual Appeal, one of our school’s major fundraising initiatives, is now underway. The school year is in full motion
and off to a great start with enrollment of 1,005 students! We have our largest freshmen class ever - 296 students. With the blessing of
more students and the additional costs of maintaining a larger campus, the total expenses will be substantially higher.
The Annual Appeal is Pius X’s yearly fundraising effort to generate revenues to “close the gap” between the tuition charged and the
actual cost associated with operating and maintaining our high school. Tuition alone does not cover the cost of a student’s education
at Pius X High School. Thanks to the help from supporting parishes in the Lincoln Deanery, parish assessments pay $2,220 per student
in financial support. The “gap” difference for the 2007-2008 year is $650 per student. This year, 1,005 young adults from the Lincoln
community have chosen to attend Pius X High School. Most certainly, far fewer would be educated at our school if the actual cost of a
student’s tuition ($4,370) were charged.
Gifts to the Annual Appeal impact every student and faculty member in strengthening and improving the overall quality of a Pius
X education. Annual Appeal revenues support the operating budget to fund:
Pius X’s faith-based curriculum
Teacher salaries
Tuition assistance
Maintenance of the campus and building
It is with a humble heart that I call upon your generosity once again. We have so much to be grateful for here at our school. We
have included a return envelope in this mailing for your convenience. You may make your gift online at www.piusx.net. Click on the
“Make an Online Donation to Pius X High School” link and select Pius X Annual Appeal {Donate Now}. We ask your support if you
are able by making a financial investment in Pius X. We are most grateful for your consideration.

Frequently asked Annual Appeal questions
Q: What is the Annual Appeal?
A: The Annual Appeal is a fundraising effort conducted to meet the
operating needs of the school, which are not covered by tuition. The Goal
for the 2007-2008 Annual Appeal is to raise $280,000.
Q: What does the Annual Appeal fund?
A: Tuition, fees and parish assessments pay a portion of the actual
cost of educating each student (see page 2). A “gap” of $650 exists
between the tuition charged and the actual cost ($4,370) of educating
each student. Generosity by many Pius X supporters on an annual
basis is needed to provide funds to fill that gap, keep tuition costs more
Q: Is it possible to go without an Annual Appeal?
A:
Only if the tuition equals the costs.
Q: Can I make a pledge to the Annual Appeal?
A: Absolutely! Pledges allow individuals and families the opportunity
to consider larger commitments than they would usually consider by
making a one-time gift.
Q: How should payments be made?
A: A donor may choose to pay in full, quarterly or semiannually.
Checks should be made payable to the Pius X Foundation.
affordable and cover the operating costs throughout the year.
Q: Is my gift to the Annual Appeal tax deductible?
Q: If this money is needed for operations, why don’t they just raise
tuition?
A: For many years Pius X has made every effort to keep the cost
of tuition affordable for students in the Lincoln area who desire an
education. Minor tuition increases have been necessary in the past
to fund the programs and costs associated with a private faith-based
high school. Without funding from the Annual Appeal, the tuition cost
per student would be prohibitive for many families. Regarding parent
support in particular, financially supporting the Annual Appeal allows
parents tax benefits that simply raising tuition would not.
A:
Yes, all gifts are tax deductible to the full extent of the law.
Q: Can I put pay for my gift via credit card?
A:
Yes. Pius X will accept both Visa and MasterCard.
Q: Can I make my gift online instead of sending the form back in the
mail?
A: Yes. To make your gift online, go to the Pius X webpage at www.
piusx.net. To make a direct gift, click on the Make an Online Donation to
Pius X High School link and select Pius X Annual Appeal {Donate Now}.
Q: What sources other than parents support the school?
A: Currently, every student attending Pius X receives financial
support from donors. A portion of every student’s tuition is paid
in some part by donors and students are also supported in part by
parish contributions. Last year businesses, alumni, board members,
grandparents and parents supported the high school.
Q: What is expected or what’s an average gift contribution?
A:
A $100 gift to the Annual Appeal from one family might be a
Q: Are matching gifts accepted?
A: Donors are encouraged to inquire about their employers’
matching gift program. These programs match the amount of the donor’s
charitable gift often doubling their donation. Please include a completed
matching gift form with your gift.
Q: Are gifts of stock accepted?
A:
Many donors prefer giving appreciated stock. The value of the
stretch, and a $650 or more gift from another family to fund the gap
might be relatively affordable. If you are financially capable of funding
the gap difference per student, please consider making a contribution
at the gap giving level. Choosing to give to the Annual Appeal and the
stock determines the tax deduction on the date the transfer occurs.
Donors do not have to pay capital gains taxes and the tax deduction
varies with individual financial circumstances. Donors are encouraged
to consult with their financial advisors. Please contact the Development
amount you determine to be right for you is a decision based on your
own specific situation.
Office at 402-488-1046 for assistance with transferring stock.
Q: Does Pius X operate with a balanced budget?
A:
Yes! Every year a budget is passed by the Board of Advisors and
the budget is balanced.
Q: What benefits will I get by contributing to the Annual Appeal?
A:
A gift to the Annual Appeal is a tax-deductible gift (tuition is not).
Individuals who contribute gifts of $1,000 or more will be recognized at
the annual Friends of Pius X Dinner. Contributors to the Annual Appeal
are also acknowledged in the Foundation’s Annual Report.

BOLT 2007 was a huge success, and we have the numbers to prove it!
“Cirque de BOLT” was the theme for our fundraiser, and over 650 guests
came ready to help us raise funds for Pius X.
The BOLT event helped us give $200,000 to the school. The revenue
raised goes for capital improvements and to the Booster Club. If you walk
into our new Commons, you will see where we spent the money - we have
built a catering kitchen! It has been several years since Pius X High School
has had a hot lunch program. We are now offering healthy choices for our
students, and it seems to be money well spent. The catering kitchen is very
expensive and we still owe on it, so part of next year’s funds will go toward
retiring the debt.

last year, and we would like to offer everyone the opportunity to participate
in the eBolt auction again this year.
As Director of BOLT, I am privileged to hear all the great comments
for the success of BOLT, but I remind everyone that it is so wonderful,
because of all the parents and students who volunteered for committees
and who bought or sold lottery tickets and all our guests who attend BOLT.
You are our treasures, and we could not have done it without you! I also
want to thank all of our donors. Our auction is one of the best because of
your generous support. You make our event a success!
Please save the date for next year’s event “Oceans ‘08…BOLT 2008,”
on April 26, 2008. The coordinating committee includes Paul and Michelle
Hassler, Dr. Rex and Karen Largen, Tom and Marty Novotny, Scott and Mary
Spethman, Dr. Vince and Brenda Sutton and Tom and Sonya Zimmerman.
I must tell you they are wonderful, hard working volunteers and have some
great surprises for next year. All committee members sign up to work on
BOLT for three years, so please thank them when you see them.
Keep checking the Pius X webpage for details and updates about BOLT.

Independent Auditor’s Report
August 23, 2007
We have audited the accompanying statement of assets,
liabilities, and net assets – cash basis of Pius X Foundation (a
nonprofit organization) as of June 30, 2007, and the related
statement of revenue, expenses and changes in net assets – cash
basis for the year then ended. These financial statements are the
responsibility of the Foundation’s management. Our responsibility
is to express an opinion on these financial statements based on
our audit. The prior year summarized comparative information
has been derived from Pius X Foundation’s 2006 financial
statements, and, in our report dated September 13, 2006, we
expressed an unqualified opinion on those financial statements.
Cash & cash equivalents
As described in Note 1, these financial statements were prepared
on the cash basis of accounting, which is a comprehensive
basis of accounting other than generally accepted accounting
principles.
In our opinion, the financial statements referred to above
present fairly, in all material respects, the assets, liabilities, and
net assets of Pius X Foundation as of June 30, 2007.

We conducted our audit in accordance with auditing standards
generally accepted in the United States of America. Those
standards require that we plan and perform the audit to obtain
reasonable assurance about whether the financial statements are
free of material misstatement. An audit includes examining, on
a test basis, evidence supporting the amounts and disclosures
in the financial statements. An audit also includes assessing the
accounting principles used and significant estimates made by
management, as well as evaluating the overall financial statement
presentation. We believe that our audit provides a reasonable
basis for our opinion.

Phone-a-thon
Under the leadership of Phone-a-thon chairs Eric and
Angie Schafers ’89 and Scott and Karla Hartz ’92, the
2006 Alumni Phone-a-thon Appeal was another success.
We are pleased to announce that 1,175 donors supported
our students and school through this annual appeal.
As of Oct. 16, 2007, $88,190.60 has been contributed.
Gifts ranged from $2 to $2,000. This past year’s leading
class was once again the class of 1964 with total gifts of
$4,920. In second was the class of 1980 with total gifts of
$3,590. Each and every gift is greatly appreciated. The
students and staff of Pius X High School thank all our
donors, including the companies who matched gifts! We
also thank all our wonderful volunteers who made this
successful event possible!

Students advance to finalists
in National Merit Scholarship Program
Seniors Jim Morin, Marian
Hanigan and Elizabeth Sutton
have been selected as National
Merit
Semifinalists.
The
National Merit Scholarship
Program is an academic
competition for recognition
and scholarships that began in 1955. High school students enter the
program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship
Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) during their junior year.
Of the 1.4 million entrants, approximately 50,000 with the
highest scores qualify for recognition in the program. In early
September, about 16,000 students are notified that they have
qualified as semifinalists. (Semifinalists are designated on a state
representational basis, and they are the highest scoring entrants in
each state.)
In February, semifinalists who meet academic and other
requirements will be notified that they have advanced to finalist
standing. Finalists compete for a variety of scholarships that are
awarded based on their abilities, skills and accomplishments.

Pius X welcomed pro-life speaker, Scott Klusendorf, president
of the Life Training Institute, on Sept. 13. Students gathered in
the gymnasium for the all-school assembly, hosted by their prolife organization, to listen to his presentation “Making Abortion
Unthinkable: the Art of Pro-Life Persuasion.”
Klusendorf is a well-known speaker who travels the country
teaching pro-life advocates how to persuasively defend their
stand. During the hour-long assembly, he educated students and
guests about the common mistakes pro-choice advocates use in
their arguments.
He informed them that people who are pro-choice often
misconstrue claims made by pro-life supporters in order to
respond to ones they like better. Klusendorf told the audience that
the moral issues and choices are too often mistaken as preference
issues and choices, and reminded them that what is morally right
and wrong has nothing to do with likes and dislikes.
