UNLOCKING HIS CAREER: Apprentice Luke Parker busy at work
Colleges team up for
apprenticeship opportunities
T
he council is working with two local
colleges in Lincolnshire to provide
apprenticeship opportunities in the
authority’s repairs team.
Students from grantham College and
Boston College are now working with
repairs staff in four roles to boost young
people’s training in construction trades.
Three apprentices have joined from
grantham College in joinery and
plumbing on two year courses.
Paul Ward, head of Work Based
Learning and apprenticeships at the
college said: “apprenticeships are
playing a major role in getting young
people into employment while
providing employers with a cost
effective method of bringing essential
new skills to their business.
“This is the latest welcome addition
to our programme in what has been a
record year when we have supported
over 900 apprentices.
“We’re very pleased to be working in
partnership with SKdC and look forward
to helping their apprentices make the
most of these great opportunities with
the council.”
The partnership with Boston College
has resulted in a trainee electrician
taking up an advanced apprenticeship
national vocational Qualification (nvQ).
This will teach the successful student
the skills and knowledge required to
install electro technical systems and
equipment in buildings, structures and
the environment.
anita howard, Business
development advisor at Boston College
said: “We are thrilled to be supporting
South Kesteven district Council with this
fantastic new trade apprenticeship
opportunity.
“This is safe in the knowledge that
with the training the apprentice receives
from Boston College and the mentoring
that they will receive from SKdC’s team
of maintenance personnel, together we
will grow and encourage new talent of
the future.”
SKdC’s portfolio holder for grow the
economy, Cllr frances Cartwright said: “it
is great news that a programme is
underway that will give young people
new opportunities to work with us to
improve their skills in specific areas.
“Partnership working in this manner
shows we are determined to engage
and work with new generations of the
workforce in the district to help do our
part in helping strengthen their skills
that local employers will welcome.”
use your recycling wheel
to make us champions!

wheel!
This is to make sure you know
exactly what to put in each of your
silver, black and green bins or clear and
pink bags and what items need to be
taken to your local household Waste
and recycling Centre in grantham or
Bourne.
every household in the district is to
receive this educational tool with this
edition of SKtoday to help us become
recycling champions.
We already know that our residents
are good at recycling but we want to
be even better to help reduce
contamination.
Contamination is the name given to
items that turn up in silver bins or clear
bags even though they are not
recyclable.
The wheel has proved popular with
both adults and children in the past,
telling everyone what items should go
in each of our black, silver and green
bins – or clear or pink bags - through a
simple colour coding system.

during this month an education
pack to inform children what items can
go in their bins at home will be rolled
out to all primary schools.
This will complement an advertising
campaign on the side of refuse lorries
and adverts and features in the local
press praising residents for having
contamination free bins or bags during
our random checks.
We’re committed to reducing
contamination and enhancing our
recycling rates as much as possible. The
feedback from residents and teachers
with the educational programme to date
is encouraging.

SKdC’s portfolio holder for

much people value what we
provide and what good value for
money it really is.”

Tourism on show at national exhibition
isitor attractions across South
Kesteven have been showcased by
SKdC at the uK’s premier tourism event
in Birmingham – The Best of Britain and
ireland.
Stamford, named as the best place to
live by the Sunday Times last year, was
in the spotlight in the two day
exhibition, complete with its georgian
architecture, niche retailers, and even
ghost walks.
The council joined a visit england
exhibition area that included Lincoln
Cathedral, Waddington air Show and
Lincolnshire aviation heritage in a new
drive to put the district on the visitor
map for new venues, destinations,
v
locations for conferences,
accommodation and ideas.
it used the opportunity to promote
September’s gravity fields festival in
and around grantham and Bourne’s
planned Brm Town Trail charting the
town’s motor racing traditions.
Linking with Lincolnshire aviation
heritage, the council also unveiled
proposals for its new aviation heritage
trail focused on local World War ii
activities leading up to d-day and the
following arnhem airlift – filling a gap in
the history of Lincolnshire as Bomber
County.
Copies of the 2014 South
Lincolnshire visitor guide were handed
out, complete with accommodation
providers, arts Centre programmes in
grantham and Stamford and
information on all towns.
Cllr Bob adams, portfolio holder for
leisure, arts and culture, said how
important it was for the council to be
promoting its visitor attractions. “We
have a growing range of wonderful
visitor attractions and being able to
present them to a national audience
was a great opportunity.”

Spring into action and get fit in 14
pring is often a time when people
kick-start their fitness regimes and
there is no better time than right now.
The teams at grantham meres,
Bourne, deepings and Stamford Leisure
Centres have compiled a list of top 10
tips to help people on their way to a fit
and healthy 2014.
S
1
Stay realistic – if you are not
used to it, getting into exercise
isn’t always easy! Therefore you
should set yourself realistic goals
and maybe speak to a personal
trainer who can help you figure
out what those goals are.
2
Join with a friend – if you know
your gym routine may slip or are
a bit intimidated by the gym, you
may want to join with a friend as
this will be motivation in itself.
Seeing each other get fit
together will make you feel
great!
3
4
5
6
Make the time – many people
feel they don’t have time to go to
the gym or exercise, but if you
consider how many hours there
are in the day, there is definitely
time to squeeze in an hour of
exercise. it is so much more
worthwhile than watching a Tv
show!
Find an activity you enjoy –
exercise should be enjoyable and
not feel like torture. after all,
you’ve made the decision to do
it. find something you enjoy
doing so you can take great
pleasure in overcoming the
challenges and progress your
fitness levels.
Make a diet plan – food is 90%
of the health and fitness battle,
and making a diet plan will
ensure you stay on track. By
eating a balanced mix of
proteins, fats and carbohydrates
you will reap the benefits of your
physical training routine.
6
7
8
9
Keep on top of your progress –
a fitness journal will help keep
your exercise routine on track,
especially when you need an
extra bit of motivation. You can
always look back to see how far
you’ve come, and see where
you’re going.
Try something new - it is
important to keep your exercise
regime fresh, so that you don’t
get bored of doing the same
things. Try different classes
during the week or contact a
personal trainer to spice up your
routine!
Don't overdo it! - While exercise
shouldn't be easy, you shouldn't
injure yourself by working too
hard. Your body needs to recover
between exercises, particularly if
you are new to working out - so
make sure you give yourself
some time to relax.
Forget your excuses! - Whatever
excuses you may have used
before for not exercising, try and
forget about it and think of all
the potential benefits instead!
remember your body can do
anything; it is just the brain that
needs convincing!
10
Do it now! Low joining fees of
just £25 and a monthly payment
of just £21 at all of our leisure
centres.
SKdC’s portfolio holder for arts, leisure
and culture, Cllr Bob adams said: “it has
never been cheaper and easier to get fit
and active at your local leisure centre so
why not make 2014 your year to get fit
and healthy?”

UNDERWAY: Workshops are in
progress for this year’s Festival.
Patrons announced
in Gravity build up
ising television star dallas Campbell
(pictured right) has been
announced as a second patron of this
autumn’s isaac newton-related gravity
fields festival.
dallas, who opened the 2012
festival, joins top scientist and former
Kesteven and grantham girls’ School
pupil Professor valerie gibson,
grantham born and now a governor at
King’s School, a Professor of high
energy Physics at Cambridge university
and who works at the Large hadron
Collider at Cern in geneva.
it’s the latest bit of good news for
the festival following a major financial
boost from a £89,200 grant from the
arts Council england.
it means that as arts and science
festival organisers we can move ahead
with ambitious plans for the event in
and around grantham on September
24-28, following the theme of ‘giants of
Science.’
r
14
The town’s second isaac-newton
related festival will have more of a focus
on large scale outdoor performance
events, including a giant shadow show
dance.
The 2012 finale drew an estimated
12,000 people to grantham and this
year’s entertainment - based on stars,
orbits, planetary movements and the
equations of movement enshrined by
newton - will contribute to an equally
compelling spectacle.
festival director rosemary richards
said: “We have exciting plans for laser
mazes, sophisticated animated
costume dancers, Led hoops, giant
puppets and mirrored costumes.”
in october, SKdC also celebrated a
grant of £58,600 for its Lincolnshire’s
age of Scientific discovery, a series of
newton-related projects whose
findings will feed into the September
festival – including the newton Tree
Party, a search for newton’s
descendants.

17th Century has audience appeal

packed audiences in January as part of

importance of plants in daily life, their
role in medicine and use in the kitchen.
BBC food historian dr annie gray
followed up with a fun and informative
talk on ‘Tasty Titbits: Cooking in the

from dr Peter elmer, who is at the
forefront of a unique project
documenting medical practitioners in
early modern Britain.
An artist’s impression of what the new multiplex cinema could look like

lans are being drafted for a £6
million project to regenerate
grantham town centre.
and at the core of the scheme is a
six screen multiplex cinema which will
show all the latest blockbuster releases
and cater for niche local markets.
Work could begin by the middle of
the year and the likely completion date
is summer 2015.
it is planned that the cinema will
build on the existing reel site on St
Catherine’s road and an extension of
the building would see the creation of
four new studios which will bring the
total seating capacity at the venue to
950.
The site extends as far as the
entrance to the council car park near
the Tollemache pub and the existing
Senior Citizens’ Club. The council plans
to work with organisations to
accommodate existing rights of access
and help the senior citizens’ club to
relocate to new premises to be built
behind the current cinema. The new
building will be constructed by the
council as landowners and then leased
back to end users.
The ambitious development, which
is still at an early stage, proposes three
restaurants on the side of the cinema
building and 21,000 square feet of
office space on two floors above them.
The development will consider the
remodelling of part of the council
offices as part of a cultural quarter,
including the courtyard behind the
P
museum and arts centre.
The development has the potential
to create new office jobs as well as
employment at the cinemas and
restaurants.
Leader of the Council, Cllr Linda neal
said: “We have made budget provision
to fund the scheme that has the
potential to transform the town into a
much more attractive destination.
“When you add in the fact that this
project will also regenerate the town it
makes absolutely good sense for us to
go ahead with the work.”
reel’s KC Suri said that as well as
showing all the latest blockbuster
releases the fact that the development
would have six screens would mean
that art house and children’s
productions, that have always been
popular in grantham, would also be on
offer.
“We have known for a long time that
we need to improve our offer in
grantham and this multi-million pound
cinema development will bring our
ambitions for the town to fruition,” said
mr Suri.
Portfolio holder for grow the
economy, Cllr francis Cartwright said:
“We are determined to improve the
offer in grantham for local people and
to help make the town more attractive
to investors. This development, if
approved, represents a major step
towards our goal.”
Planning permission will be
required.

major housing development
proving ‘Poplar’

home and commuters to London
are just some of the people who have
invested in grantham’s Poplar farm
development.
Progress on site is gathering pace as
more and more new homes can be
seen from the main a52 into town and
from across the fields to gonerby hill
foot.
david Wilson and Bellway have been
busy dealing with enquiries from local
house hunters as well as those from
further afield – and the most popular
property type so far has been the fourbedroom detached.
over the next couple of years 204
new houses will be built with a mix of
two, three and four bed homes,
including affordable houses and some
available on shared ownership.
Long term Poplar farm, the first
phase of the north West Quadrant, has
planning permission for 1,800
properties with a further 1,700 planned
during the second phase on land
known as rectory farm.
The finished development will boast
green credentials, with energy efficient
buildings, low carbon energy sources,
allotments, sports facilities, a local
centre and community hall, a wetland
area on the northern boundary and a
‘Central Park’ area of green space
running through the centre.
facilities will be added as homes are
built – including a primary school when
housing numbers hit 600, the Pennine

Portfolio holder for grow the
economy, Cllr frances Cartwright said:
“it’s really encouraging to see so much
interest in Poplar farm from both local
people and buyers who appreciate
grantham’s excellent connectivity and
affordable property compared with
other areas of the country.
“This shows that demand is there for
new homes and it endorses our priority
to grow the local economy and provide
good housing for all. We have some
exciting plans and an ambitious growth
agenda for grantham which not only
includes large scale housing but a
major £6 million scheme to regenerate
the town centre.”
developers david Wilson say their
Barrowby edge development on Poplar
farm, which has permission for 99 new
homes, has nine occupied properties,
with a further five homes sold “offplan.”
Philip Lacey, Sales director for david
Wilson homes east midlands, said: “We
have been extremely pleased with the
continued interest that we have
received at Barrowby edge. Since its
launch last summer we have sold 18
private homes to buyers ranging from
first time buyers to investors, showing
that there is great demand for new,
quality homes in grantham.”
While on Bellway’s aspire site, which
has 105 plots, 12 have been sold, mainly
to local buyers but others have gone to
commuters planning to travel to London
and Scotland.
Sales director Ben Smith said: “The
speed with which early sales have been
secured at aspire is overwhelming. We
have buyers who had been waiting for
the development to open and they have
acted quickly to secure the plots they
want.
“many of our buyers have come from
grantham and surrounding villages
which shows there is a real need for this
kind of development. about half have
used help to Buy and a few have partexchanged.
“The location of aspire has been key to
its appeal, with good schools and
transport links on the doorstep and the
town centre a short walk away.”

Community point reshuffle
a
s a result of
feedback from our
customers we have
changed the layout of
our community point
in Bourne.
Since South
Kesteven Community
Point opened in march
2013 a number of
customers told us that
they felt there was a
lack of space in the
computer and study
area and some
customers wanted a
more private area to
meet with council staff.
Council leader, Cllr Linda neal said:
“We have now re-arranged the
customer service and library areas and
have moved all of the computers into
the main area of the library giving our
residents more space. We have also
moved the booths, used by our staff to
meet with customers, into the area
previously used as the computer and
study area. This gives staff and
customers more privacy when they are
meeting.
“These changes have come as a
direct result of feedback from the users
of this facility which shows that not
only are we are listening to what they
want, but also know how important it is
that residents let us know if they think
we could make a change that would
improve our service offer.”
another issue identified was a lack
of a waiting area and how cramped it
was around the meet and greet area,
especially when using the library
printer/copier. The changes we have
made have allowed more space here as
well.

The Last Word
By Leader of the Council
Cllr Linda Neal
hese are exciting
times for everyone
in South Kesteven.
We are involved in
major projects in
many areas that will
benefit our
communities and yet
we have still been
able to freeze our
portion of your council tax bill.
We did consult with you on the
possibility of increasing council tax by
1.75% but thanks to lots of hard work
and diligence we have been able to
hold the bill to the same level as last
year.
i don't think this achievement should
be under estimated and it certainly
would not have been possible without
the £2.3 million savings that we have
made across the authority since the
financial year 2010-11.
however, we are not complacent and
we will continue to try and make
savings because each year seems to be
tougher than the one we have just
made provision for.
But we are still ambitious and want
to drive our district forward and that is
why i am so pleased that we have been
able to bring forward a £6 million plan
for a multiplex cinema in grantham.
it’s not just about having blockbuster
releases on show; it’s also about creating
new office space, restaurants and kickstarting the whole of the town centre
from which everyone can benefit.
and we’re not only working in
grantham. We’re building council
houses in Stamford for the first time in
10 years and our new customer access
point for the south of the area in Bourne
saw an incredible 30,000 customers in
the first six months of operation.
visitors can access 31 different
services that we provide, register a birth,
death or marriage, or even change a
library book from the new facility.
and all this and more without having
to increase council tax – i think that is
really something to shout about!

COMING DOWN: Demolition makes way
for new council homes in Grantham
Out with the old in with the new
– the first of our new council
house projects gets underway!
ore than £3million will be spent as
part of a two year building
programme to provide 33 new homes
in our district.
demolition work started in January
to clear the site on Sandon road in
grantham. The development includes
four two-bed flats which could be
ready for occupation later this year.
The work kicks off the building of
the first council homes to be built in
the district for nearly 10 years.
Cllr Terl Bryant, cabinet member for
good housing, said he was delighted to
see that building work had started and
was confident that the new homes
would be of benefit to the district.
he said: “We are investing £1 million
this year and a further £2 million next
year. housing legislation has changed,
allowing us more flexibility in terms of
building new homes. The mix of
property types will suit tenants of all
ages and some will meet the specific
needs of people with disabilities.”
as well as providing much needed

homes in our district, our plans to build
new homes will generate construction
jobs and secure many more with
suppliers through the purchase of
materials and services.
all land to be developed is council
owned and is made up of former
housing and garage sites which have
already been cleared of buildings.
designs include one, two, three and
four bedroom flats, houses and
bungalows to go into the council’s
housing stock.
high energy performance is a key
factor, providing affordable warmth for
residents, and all should meet ‘Lifetime
homes’ standards; suitable for tenants
of all ages and with ease of access for
those with a disability or requiring
wheelchair access.
other sites include east avenue,
grantham (three) and Thames road,
grantham (two).
in Stamford 20 new homes are
planned off Lincoln road with a further
four on glen Crescent.
