COASTAL CITIES OF ACTS By Private Yacht The Mediterranean and Aegean Coasts This unique trip begins in Istanbul and then we fly south to the Mediterranean Sea. Our yacht will drop anchor for meals and overnight stays in remote, forested coves next to picturesque archaeological sites of significant Lycean, Greek, Roman and Byzantine ruins. Our theme will be discovering the maritime cities. We will also reflect upon the principles of God’s guidance as understood by the early church. Our itinerary includes both the rugged Mediterranean and Aegean coasts of Turkey. There will also be optional easy walks and moderate hikes, from one to two hours long offered daily as well as three charming ports for shopping. Brief city tour and transfer to our hotel. We gather this evening for a welcome dinner at Amiral Hotel..D Mon., October 18, 2010 - Istanbul A day for touring and shopping in Istanbul. We will visit the Old City highlights such as Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace and Basilica Cisterns. We will enjoy a sunset cruise along the Bosphorus and seafood dinner along the waterfront… Dinner and Overnight at Amiral Hotel...BLD Tues., October 19, 2010 - Antalya—(Cruise) Fly south to Antalya at the base of the Taurus Mountains on the Mediterranean Sea. Today begins our visits to the important Greek and Roman port cities along the Mediterranean Sea that were important in the 1st century. Our first archaeological site will be Perge of Pamphilia, with its magnificent theater, and market street leading from the Greek and Roman city gates to the acropolis. We will have a mini-lecture about this Gateway to Paul’s First and Second Missionary Journeys. Visit to the Antalya Archaeological Museum and then board our 10 passenger yachts and cruise at dusk to the ancient harbor of Phaselis...BLD Crusader Era Castle at Simena Wed., October 20, 2010 - Phaselis / Chimaera / Olympos / Porto Genoese—(Cruise) Morning visit in relative privacy to Phaselis before the day-trippers arrive. We will follow the Cardo road from the western harbor into the Greco-Roman city, with its baths, agoras, theater and temples. We will have a mini-lecture on the Town Planning and Christianity Amidst the Olympian Gods. Late morning sail to the Cirali Beach. There we will follow the Olympos Valley into the canyon entrance to the town at the base of a towering acropolis. We will then take a tractor pulled wagon up a dirt road to an optional 1 hour hike up to Chimaera, a remarkable site where an underground source of methane gas has been feeding flames dancing from the mountainside for thousands of years. We will have a mini-lecture on The gods Vulcan and Hades. He has lived and worked as an archaeologist and educator in Israel since 1974 and has taught classes in the School for Overseas Students at Hebrew University and the Ecumenical Institute in Jerusalem. He has developed courses in historical geography and biblical history, uniquely tying the studies with the biblical text, with an emphasis on the theological implications. He is the author of several dozen notebooks and teaching materials that are an excellent help to pastors and leaders. He received his Ed.D. degree from Southwestern Theological Seminary in Ft. Thurs., October 21, 2010 - Finike / Myra/Arycanda—(Cruise) We will take our bus along the rocky coast from Finike Harbor to the important trading city of Myra. There we will see the Lycian House and Temple tombs, the Roman Theater, the Church of Saint Nicolas (Santa Clause), and view the Hadrianic grain depot. Mini-lecture on Paul’s transfer to a grain ship here and his Journey to Rome. We will drive up a high mountain road to Arycanda, an ancient site which seems to “hang” from the mountainside. We will visit its well-preserved stadium, theater and high temples. Dinner will be at a trout restaurant along a mountain stream, with fresh bread baked before our eyes. Overnight in Finike Harbor...BLD Fri., October 22, 2010 - Gokkaya Bay/Simena/Kekova Island-(Cruise) In the Gokkaya Bay area we have an optional 1.5 hour walk along farmlands and grazing areas. We will have a mini-lecture on Shepherding and Psalm 23. We will cross a peninsula, climb around Lycian sarcophagi, and reach the ancient port of Simena. There we will have opportunity to explore the Crusader-era castle of Kalekoy. We will have a mini-lecture at Aperlae on Day Trip Sailing along the Mediterranean to prepare us for our sail along the submerged remains at the shore of Kekova Island. We will overnight in a nearby wilderness cove...BLD Sun., October 23, 2010 - Aperlae/Kas-(Cruise), Visit the partially sunken city of Aperlae, where one can swim over some of the ruins of the town. At the shore we will have a mini-lecture on The Purple Dying Industry and the New Testament. We will then sail the to the beautiful port city of Kas (“Kash”). There will be opportunities for Internet cafes and shopping here. Dinner in a local restaurant. Overnight in a nearby cove. . BLD Mon., October 24, 2010 - Kalkan / Xanthos / Patara-(Cruise) Join our bus at Kalkan harbor for a drive to the Lycian capitol of Xanthos. Visit the “Xanthos Inscription,” theater and famous Pillar Tomb, and new excavations around the agora. We will drive up the mountain to Bezirgan, a traditional farming village for home-cooked lunch in a family’s house (two seatings). Afternoon visit to Patara, where, as we view the ancient harbor area we will have an outdoor worship service and mini-lecture on Paul’s Journey to Jerusalem. Visit the theater and City Council building that is currently-being-restored. Overnight...BLD Tues., October 25, 2010 - Gemile Island / Fethiye / Turunc Pinar-(Cruise) Our morning cruise brings us to Gemile Island for a short, half hour walk up to a Byzantine monastery, chapels, and a church in honor of Saint Nicolas, and a unique, covered “Pilgrim’s Ascent” to the church. We cruise on to Fethiye (ancient Telmessos) for shopping, restocking our yachts and on to Gocek Lagoon, an isolated cove for anchor near a ruin known as “Cleopatra’s Sunken Baths.” There will probably be time for swimming this afternoon or in the morning...BLD Cleopatra’s Sunken Baths Wed., October 26, 2010 - Iztuzu Beach / Kaunos-(Cruise) Today we will drive by bus to visit to the impressive cliff-like setting of Greek and Roman Kaunos and its rock-cut tombs. We head by local boat through the reedy passages of the Dalyan River for an optional soak in the natural hot springs and sulphur mud baths. We have lunch in a local restaurant and opportunity for shopping. Overnight on a remote Bay. We then sail for Marmaris...BLD The Tombs at Kaunos Thurs., October 27, 2010 - Marmaris / Kusadasi /Didyma/Miletus Morning disembarkation and drive up the Aegean Coast of Turkey. Mini-lecture on the bus about the letters to the cities of the Meander Valley: Hierapolis, Colossae, and Laodicea. Visit the gigantic Temple of Apollo at Didyma and on to Miletus an important trade city for the Meander Valley where we visit its Roman Bath, Harbor and theater.. We have a mini-Lecture on the person of Saint Paul. Visit a Turkish carpet weaving factory. Continue on to Ephesus area for overnight at Caravanserail hotel in Kusadasi...BD Fri., October 28, 2010 - Ephesus / Istanbul Morning visit to the extensive archaeological excavations of Ephesus. Here we will have two mini-lectures. The first will be on the Book of Revelation, while we view the ruins of the Temple of the Emperor Domitian, who was probably understood as a picture of the Anti-Christ. The second lecture will be about Saint Paul’s Third Missionary Journey, with particular emphasis on his address to the crowds at the Theater. View the Monastery of St. John and the site of the Temple of Diana (Artemis) of the Ephesians, one of the seven ancient wonders of the world. Overnight at Caravanserail hotel in Kusadasi.
