Over 47 thousand began the journey to compete for their borough in the 2009 Balfour Beatty London Youth Games (2008: 28 thousand). New events were organised in 2009 which addressed gaps in competition pathways for particular sports. Thousands of young gymnasts and tennis players got the opportunity to take part in the London Youth Games through competitions introduced in partnership with Youth Sports Trust Competition Managers, British Gymnastics and the Tennis Foundation. The Thames Water London Youth Games Regatta returned in 2009 and saw a doubling of participants at the Docklands Venue in events fully supported and endorsed by the 3 NGBs. More external funding was sourced to invest in partnership projects to encourage more participants. In 2009/10 London Youth Games attracted more than £80 thousand of external funding to support projects aimed at increasing participation in the Games. Balfour Beatty / Help a London Child Sports Development Grants programme ran for a third year, increasing participation through initiatives led by the London Boroughs. The Grants achieved their objectives of growing sports participation, amongst disadvantaged groups. The projects benefited over 3000 participants across all 33 boroughs including 307 young people with a disability. Jacqui Agyepong, former Games competitor visiting Newham Mini Games - an LYG Funded Event London Youth Games Annual 2009 Sporting Pathways – another Balfour Beatty funded programme will invest more than £150 thousand with NGBs to address areas of London with lower participation in certain sports through increased coaching and competition between now and the 2012 Olympics. Triathlon and Judo are already beginning to benefit from this funding. WE CAN HEAR YOU! London Youth Games Annual 2009 Whether it is the event format, the competition structure, the standard of officiating and organisation or the off the field factors, the quality of experience of the competition is vital to retaining young people in sport. In 2009 we went through an exercise of understanding what is important to the experience of the athletes, team managers, Borough Team Organisers and volunteers. We have embarked on a programme of activity to continuously improve the experience for all. • There has been a traditional focus only on finals week We invested in improving the quality of the qualifying events, to give competitors a sense of being part of Europe’s largest youth sports event. • Communication of rules, draws and other information is critical to the experience of the Team Manager and ultimately the athletes – we provided draws online and are committed to a communications timetable for all competitions in 2010. • Our Online Entry Management System was launched for the 2009 Games improving the management of competitors’ information and the elimination of errors – further developments are reducing time taken to enter teams and giving Boroughs a great overview of their entry status. • More than twenty sports celebrities attended LYG events during the year providing inspiration to current competitors. Team Managers and Athletes were asked for their opinions for the first time, through independent face to face and online research. This has set our “experience” priorities for 2010. 84% of young people say they are more likely to carry on participating in sport because of the London Youth Games. In the last 18 months we have worked closely with 19 NGBs to ensure the rules, age groups, equipment and competition format are aligned with the sport’s framework and development plans and the principles of Long Term Athlete Development. • In 2009 we introduced mini-tennis, and key steps gymnastics, the modified forms of the sports appropriate for our age groups. • Following England Squash recommendations the age groups, standard cap and scoring format were changed. • We have supported the introduction of pathway competitions in triathlon and judo to give our athletes competitive experience prior to the Games. • The RS Feva Sailing competition has helped develop new skills with sailors in London. Minority sports such as Waterpolo and Handball benefit from being part of the Games calendar through our development sports programme - which creates high quality competitions. LYG is a critical part of the competitive framework for youth volleyball in London “The London Youth Games are an essential part of developing a performance pathway and providing opportunities for young sailors in London.” Guy Malpas, Royal Yachting Association, Regional Development Officer. We are proud of our achievements, most notably the growth in participation and creating the only young volunteer programme exclusively focused on getting young people in to sports events – in my opinion a critical part of ensuring that young Londoners play their role in the 2012 Olympics. 2010 is an important year for us to continue to implement the strategy outlined in this Annual. This means continuing to grow participation in the Games towards and hopefully beyond the fifty thousand target I set two years ago and to raise the bar again on the quality of competition being provided for all participants. This time next year we look forward to reporting progress on our 2010 priorities; calendar_ V2 25/2/09 2:00 pm Page 1 EATMTEYS B R U O F L BA YOUTH GA DAR LONDON N 2010 CALE Click here for 2010 Calendar VENUE ure Centre Harrow Leis ure Centre Harrow Leis ure Centre Harrow Leis ure Centre Harrow Leis Lord’s Score Centre Score Centre rts Centre Westway Spo mon Fishery & Tylers Com Brook Farm Score Centre ce NSC Crystal Pala Score Centre ce NSC Crystal Pala Regents Park Sports Centre Goresbrook rts Centre ks Water Spo Victoria Doc atta Centre London Reg Sports Centre Goresbrook ium Mile End Stad rts Centre Redbridge Spo N DETAILS COMPETITIO s (Male) Cricket Qualifier (Male) s RY Cricket Qualifier (Female) FEBRUA S S s lifier Qua ket Cric T F s (Female) M T W lifier Qua ket Cric 1 Final Cup ket Cric lifiers (Female) 7 8 Qua 6 all 5 ketb Bas 2 3 4 lifiers (Male) Qua all 15 ketb Bas 13 14 cia – Mini 9 10 11 12 Boccia, Boc 22 lifiers 19 20 21 Angling – Qua 16 17 18 lifiers (Female) Qua l 28 ybal 27 Volle 26 23 24 25 Judo lifiers (Male) Volleyball Qua Sunday 7 June Karate bility M A R C HS S Football – Disa – Artistic T F ics day 9 June W nast Tues T Gym M Sailing Rowing June 1 er Regatta Kayak Sprint, Saturday 13 Thames Wat Canoeing – Kayak Slalom, – g oein 8 Can t 5 6 7 – Floor & Vaul 2 3 4 Gymnastics lifiers, bility s, Tennis Qua 14 June Disa lifier 13 14 15 – day Qua 12 Sun etics ash 11 Athl Squ 9 10 June – Trampolining, 22 lifiers (Female) Thursday 18 Gymnastics 19 20 21 Hockey Qua 16 17 18 s is Qualifiers, rday 20 June lifier Tenn Satu e Qua is Tabl Tenn 29 lifiers (Male), 26 27 28 Hockey Qua 23 24 25 Disability Sunday 21 June Swimming – 30 31 24 June lifiers Wednesday Badminton Qua g 27 June – Divin rday ming Satu L I Swim APR S Fencing tball (Male) T F S l, Cycling, Foo M T W Sunday 28 June Mini Games Basketball Fina 4 5 ale) July minton Final, 1 2 3 by Union (Fem Thursday 2 Archery, Bad Netball, Rug 11 12 rday 4 July Final (Female), 10 Satu key 9 Hoc 8 6 7 yball Final ls 19 Swimming, Volle ation TBC), Athletics, Squash Fina 16 17 18 l (Loc Indoor Rowing, 13 14 15 Angling Fina Final (Male), n, Weightlifting 26 ale) , Hockey 23 24 25 hlon – Aquathlo Sunday 5 July Football (Fem 20 21 22 is Final, Triat is Final, Tenn Tenn e Tabl 30 27 28 29 DATE ruary Saturday 7 Feb y ruar Sunday 8 Feb February Saturday 28 ch Sunday 1 Mar March Saturday 7 May Saturday 30 Sunday 31 May Thursday 4 June Saturday 6 June www.londonyouthgames.org/calendar2010 London Youth Games Annual 2009 rts Centre Redbridge Spo Spa Beckenham Centre Sobell Sports ce NSC Crystal Pala Sports Centre Goresbrook ce NSC Crystal Pala ce NSC Crystal Pala • Our sporting pathways programme in partnership with NGBs to give more young people access to high quality sport competitions. • The growth of GamesForce, our successful volunteering programme where we will broaden the opportunities and increase the numbers of volunteers from disadvantaged backgrounds. • Modernisation of our governance – creating an effective and accountable Board with fit for purpose working practices and governing document. • Our partnerships with other sporting partners ensuring the Games remain at the heart of youth sport in London. • Identification of new commercial and funding partners to realise the potential of the Games.
