2013 Reviewing a Year of Compassionate Giving Phoenix Society ANNUAL REPORT VISION We ENVISION a world where every burn survivor is supported through his or her recovery. Forty thousand people are hospitalized each year with burn injuries. We are committed to providing each survivor and their families with the tools and support they need to thrive again. We are here to help with caring people to share the journey and resources to make it easier. MISSION Our MISSION is to provide a supportive community to empower everyone impacted by a burn injury through peer support, education, and advocacy. Your contributions help burn survivors and their families get back to living with compassionate support and tools to re-build their lives! TOOLS TO REBUILD LIVES Each year, 40,000 people are hospitalized with a burn injury. In 2013 alone, your support enabled us to reach over 48,000, including burn survivors, their loved ones, the medical community, and firefighters. • Peer support through Phoenix SOAR is more accessible than ever before. We brought this ground-breaking program to eight additional burn centers in 2013, giving over 12,000 people access to Phoenix SOAR at 63 hospitals across North America. • Over 870 attendees, including burn survivors, their families, burn care professionals, and firefighters came together at our 2013 Phoenix World Burn Congress. • The Journey Back, resources to assist school reentry after burn injury or traumatic loss, is now available in an easy-to-use and interactive e-book, with a supporting online tutorial. This new format will enable us to reach more people, more efficiently. • A record number of 18 burn survivor students are furthering their education through Phoenix Education Grants. • Thirteen survivors and family members received Phoenix Advocacy Training at Phoenix World Burn Congress in 2013. Phoenix Advocates represented the survivor’s voice at many events including the American Burn Association Partnership Conference, Massachusetts State House hearing, and Ohio State Fire Marshall meeting advocating for increased awareness, burn prevention, and improved care. 3 Your Impact Because of your support of the Phoenix Society, you become one of the people offering care and compassion to the burn survivor community. Every gift is a powerful way of helping burn survivors get back to living. MAUREEN’S STORY Imagine facing a burn injury alone without an expert team you can call for support – a team who knows what you’re going through. Experiences like going back to school or going swimming paralyze you with fear. Fear that someone will see the scars. It’s easier to keep them hidden you think. That is what Maureen, who suffered a severe scald burn injury at age 3, thought for 57 years. But, that began to change last December when she contacted Phoenix Society. “I’m so alone. I want to participate in life instead of letting it pass me by, but I don’t know how,” a quiet voice said when we answered the phone. Your support ensured that when Maureen called, we answered, and a transformation began. With your generosity this past year, hundreds of callers just like Maureen have been quickly connected to a community of support and guided through personalized recovery resources. And many just like Maureen met other burn survivors for the first time at our Phoenix World Burn Congress program. “The sooner you call, the sooner healing begins. For the first time since my burn injury at 3 years old, I know I am not alone . . . a weight has been lifted . . . I feel empowered to really live my life.” Read Maureen’s full story at www.phoenix-society.org/maureens-story/ 4 Your Impact EVELIN’S STORY At 17 years old, Evelin is caring, well spoken, and brave. Living in Leon, Guanajuato, Mexico, she dreams of making a difference in the world and using her life experience to help others. Wise beyond her years, Evelin does indeed have a story to tell—one of surviving a burn injury and subsequent amputation of her right arm; one of recovery, rehabilitation, and acceptance; one of striving to continue her journey in a way that helps others. Evelin has participated in the UBelong program at Phoenix World Burn Congress each year since 2010. It has helped her find strength and support in the shared experiences of other survivors. “I have learned to become stronger against any setbacks,” says Evelin. “I need to accept myself as I am.” She also describes the benefits of such supportive programming for her mother. “UBelong and World Burn Congress were like a light that my mother needed to guide us through this dark time in our lives,” explains Evelin. Because of your compassionate support, kids and families experience the lifechanging power of Phoenix World Burn Congress. For all burn survivors as well as family members, Evelin says, it’s about continuing on the journey. “We should always walk with our heads held high. And we should accept ourselves the way we are; and be strong, because the journey is not easy a lot of times, but we have to continue the journey.” Read Evelin’s full story in English at www.phoenix-society.org/evelin-eng/ or in Spanish at www.phoenix-society.org/evelin-esp/. 5 Your Impact Every day, the Phoenix Society puts your gifts to work to provide needed information and support to burn survivors, their loved ones, healthcare professionals, and fire service members. In 2013 we engaged a community of more than 48,000 people—and we have plans to reach even more, thanks to your support. YOUR DOLLARS AT WORK Phoenix SOAR 12,000 burn patients have access to peer support 1,200 burn patients have access to peer support 538 peer supporters 37 peer supporters 6 63 hospitals hospitals 2001 2013 In the coming years, our goal is to bring Phoenix SOAR to all 120 burn centers in the United States! The Phoenix Society is a community of burn survivors, their loved ones, health professionals and firefighters. Our promise is simple, but powerful: you are not alone. You can get back to living. We can help, with caring people to share the journey and resources to make it easier. 6 Financial Summary Revenues and Support Phoenix Society 2013 Revenue $98,712 $600,711 $915,023 Unrestricted Restricted Contributions $238,978 $676,045 $915,023 Phoenix World Burn Congress Support Program fees & other revenues Releases of Restrictions $525,774 $75,523 $617,857 $74,937 $23,189 ($617,857) $600,711 $98,712 $0 Total Revenue and Support $1,458,132 $156,314 $1,614,446 Expenses Unrestricted Restricted Combined Combined Program Services Total 2013 Revenue: $1,614,446 Phoenix Society 2013 Expenses $146,614 $114,510 Peer Support Education Advocacy Phoenix World Burn Congress Total Program Services Support Services $190,599 $124,149 $112,166 $626,399 0 0 0 0 $190,599 $124,149 $112,166 $626,399 $1,053,313 General and Administration $114,510 0 $114,510 Fundraising $146,614 0 $146,614 $1,314,437 0 $1,314,437 Increase in Net Assets $143,695 $156,314 $300,009 Net Assets at Beginning of Year Net Assets at End of Year $457,588 $601,283 $1,087, 283 $1,243,597 $1,544,871 $1,844.880 Total Program & Support Services $1,053,313 Total 2013 Expenses: $1,314,437 Summary Temporarily restricted assets are restricted by donors for use in future years or for specific purposes. Here are some of the people and organizations that connected, shared their compassion, and made a real difference in the burn community: REG RICHARD MS, PT On Why Giving Matters Burn rehabilitation expert, Reg Richard, challenges others to make a difference. Reg Richard is a world-renowned burn rehabilitation expert. “In my work as a clinical research coordinator for burn rehabilitation, I see burn survivors overcome challenges every day. Each day presents new obstacles for families recovering from a burn injury, but with the needed tools and support they can thrive again.” It is Reg’s goal to ensure that every burn survivor has the opportunity to be empowered in his or her recovery. This goal is what motivates Reg to support Phoenix Society. Meet Reg and read his challenge for others to make a difference at www.phoenix-society.org/richards-story/. THE PEARSON FAMILY Running for the Burn Community Ten years ago, the Pearson family was involved in a plane crash. Their healing journey culminated in a celebration of the anniversary with a half marathon event as Team Phoenix members. “We wanted our run to be a tangible event that put a little more hope into the world, especially for other burn survivors, and for [daughters] Grace and Lily.” Read more about their run to give back at www.phoenix-society.org/pearson-story/. The Pearson family shares what inspired them to join Team Phoenix. 8 Donor Highlights AlloSource Announces 10-year pledge to support Phoenix Education Grants Due to the generosity of our donors, a record number of 18 burn survivors are furthering their education with the help of a Phoenix Education Grant, or PEG. The PEG Committee, which consists of former PEG recipients, PEG donors, and Phoenix Society board members, reviews applications each summer and awards grants ranging from $500 to $3,000 for the upcoming school year. A special thanks to AlloSource, one of the nation’s largest nonprofit providers of skin, bone, and soft tissue allografts, for their pledge of a $250,000 donation over 10 years to the PEG program. This generous support will allow the Phoenix Society to award more scholarships each year, helping more burn survivors achieve their educational dreams! Read the stories of the students who were awarded 2013 PEG Scholarship at www.phoenix-society.org/peg2013/. PEG Founder Barbara Kammerer Quayle poses with 2013 scholarship recipient, Tim Hatton. UL Provides corporate sponsorship of Team Phoenix at Chicago Marathon With the addition of more than 16 UL employees, Phoenix Society had our largest Chicago team to date running in the Bank of America Chicago Marathon. UL matched pledges made through the UL employee runners so that donor pledges had double the impact. Thank you, UL and all Team Phoenix Chicago runners! 9 Team Phoenix Chicago grows as 16 UL employees run in the Bank of America Chicago Marathon. Focus on the Future We are a community in action. Together, we have the power to reach more survivors and families in need of support and address the growing demand for more resources. Our focus for the future: LOOKING FORWARD • Conduct a program assessment to increase efficiency and expand program delivery. • Make resources and support more accessible than ever before through the launch of a new website. • Collaborate with strategic partners to lead the way with the development of platforms that meet the emerging needs of the burn community. • Continue to grow programs and resources so that survivors and families who have limited access to local support may find help at all stages of their recovery. • Develop an online advocacy course to help survivors and families speak on issues facing burn survivors and advocate for improved burn prevention, awareness, and care. • Expand our partnership with the burn research community, with the goal of improving the quality of burn care. 10 2013 Donors Our visionary donors and partners make it possible for Phoenix Society to lead the way in ensuring that everyone affected by a burn injury has access to the tools and support needed to thrive again. It is because of your efforts that we are able to reach over 48,000 survivors and their families with the resources they need to move forward in recovery. It is an exciting time as the Phoenix Society grows to serve record numbers, giving more survivors the tools they need for their future. I can personally testify to the impact you make. When a new survivor meets another who has walked in their shoes – it offers a hope no one else can. Your continued support ensures that everyone affected by a burn injury has that help that lays the foundation for life-long recovery.” Thank you for your gift of hope, Pat Horan Board President 1835 RW Berends Dr. SW, Grand Rapids, MI 49519 www.phoenix-society.org
