SOUTH DAKOTA SCHOOL OF MINES & TECHNOLOGY November 2014 FOUNDATION e t a d p U A Quarterly Publication for Alumni & Friends Energy Resources Initiative Inside This Issue Foundation Annual Report Alumni Association Contributors Around and About Grubby for sale The South Dakota School of Mines & Technology has launched an interdisciplinary energy initiative to advance knowledge and better serve the upstream and downstream oil and gas industry. With robust programs in geology and geological engineering, civil and environmental engineering, chemical engineering, mining engineering, mechanical engineering and materials and metallurgical engineering, SDSM&T is well positioned to meet emerging needs and catalyze economic development related to energy production. “The energy industry is rapidly growing in our region,” said President Heather Wilson. “Many of our graduates are already hired into the industry, and we are well positioned to expand both teaching and research in this field.” In early 2014, SDSM&T launched the Shale Research Initiative to assess the feasibility of beginning the nation’s first underground shale research laboratory. The Shale Research Initiative, in partnership with RESPEC Consulting & Services and with support from the Department of Energy and State of South Dakota, is investigating geomechanical and hydrological properties, mineralogy, and composition of shale and other fine-grained rocks. The School of Mines’ geological engineering graduates have a 100 percent placement rate and are offered the highest average starting salary— nearly $71,000 annually. It also helps that SDSM&T is equidistant from the Williston Basin in North Dakota, the Powder River Basin in Wyoming and the Denver Basin in Colorado. The energy resource initiative has two parts. One is to advance knowledge, which is where the research, and particularly the shale research, comes in, and the other is to prepare students for employment in the energy industry. Industry demands can be met now with students who are well prepared to go directly into industry. Duane Hrncir, former provost and vice president for academic affairs, testified about the university’s expanding energy efforts. “The energy industry has changed significantly over the past 30 years. Advances in exploration and production are opening new areas of the country as important sources to meet the country’s energy needs. Coupled with our long history in energy resources, our geographic location is attracting a growing number of industries to partner with the university to ensure that our graduates meet the current and future needs of the energy resource workforce,” Hrncir said in his testimony. One example of this collaboration is the recent development of a minor in petroleum systems. This minor was created to be interdisciplinary to provide students from many degree programs the opportunity to gain skills needed by the petroleum industry. The minor began enrolling students this fall and is expected to be a popular choice for students wanting to pursue careers in energy resources. We will also be offering a Graduate Certificate in Petroleum Systems. SDSM&T graduate students and outside professionals can enroll in the 12-credit program of graduate-level course work. Non-Profit U.S. Postage Paid Permit #541 Rapid City, SD 57701 The Mines Annual Fund Three organizations are now fundraising as one through the Mines Annual Fund—previously known as the Mines Legacy Fund. The Mines Legacy Fund was initiated just a few years ago as the primary vehicle to solicit unrestricted funds on an annual/ongoing basis. With the new name, the Mines Annual Fund will continue to support the entire mission of the university. It is the annual giving fund to secure unrestricted support for the greatest needs of the university. The Mines Annual Fund endorses the university’s mission and 2022 strategic plan and provides a means to achieve them. It supports the Foundation’s commitment to secure resources for scholarships, faculty and research and provides the necessary funds to ensure that every student receives an innovative, high-quality education. The SDSM&T Foundation, Alumni Association, and Hardrock Club have partnered to become the university’s fundraiser. All three of the organizations support SDSM&T. The Alumni Association’s mission is to promote communication and interaction among alumni, students, faculty and administrators of SDSM&T and to maintain an alumni network and support services for graduates and friends. The Foundation exists to develop and manage private resources to support the mission and priorities of SDSM&T, to support the needs of students, faculty and staff and to contribute to institutional excellence. Support is provided in numerous ways including scholarships, department support, and student activities. The Hardrock Club’s mission is to be the main fundraising entity for the SDSM&T athletic department whose goal is to provide the maximum athletic scholarship support allowed to all varsity athletes. To recognize donors for their significant contributions to the Mines Annual Fund, the President’s Circle was established. President’s Circle Membership is offered to those donating $1,000 or more with members receiving invitations to special events. Five-year members are recognized on a commemorative plaque outside of the university president’s office. Younger alumni can become members with a discounted donation of $100 to $900 annually, corresponding with the number of years (one to nine) since graduation. Although the state of South Dakota provides some of the base funding that SDSM&T needs to operate, it is the annual support from donors that helps SDSM&T departments and programs not just meet expectations, but exceed them. Donors to the Mines Annual Fund endorse the mission of the university. The Foundation, the Alumni Association, and the Hardrock Club are working together through the annual fund to support SDSM&T as it educates world-class engineers and scientists today and in the future. Please consider a gift to the Mines Annual Fund, thereby enabling the university to recruit, retain, and educate some of the brightest students. We are thankful for your support! Mineral Industries Initiative The South Dakota School of Mines is one of five US universities still offering the combination of undergraduate majors in geology, geological engineering, metallurgical engineering, and mining engineering. The three majors are housed within the Mineral Industries building. This facility has never seen a major renovation, and the current 1960s-era layout of classrooms, laboratories, student work areas, and offices is functionally outdated, dampening efforts to advance knowledge and provide science and engineering education of the highest possible quality. The university’s vision is to transform the Mineral Industries building and create a future-focused facility with a multidisciplinary and open atmosphere; upgrade classrooms and laboratories with state-of-theart instructional equipment; and work spaces where students create wholeprocess and flexible and faculty can gather for laboratories and compelling study, team-based learning, and research/design work. In transforming the Mineral Industries facility, it will create a more open layout, with floors organized by function rather than by discipline. Open work areas, along with connected laboratories and other innovation spaces will encourage collaboration among faculty and facilitate hands-on learning experiences and interdisciplinary design projects of students. The Board of Regents approved the development of a preliminary design for the Mineral Industries building in June 2014. Total project costs have been estimated to be in the range of 14 to 17 million dollars. The renovation will take a phased approach and the outcome, tentatively slated for completion in 2018, will be a uniquely-designed space to enhance educational, design, and research collaborations between the academic departments and industry. The Kuliks support SDSM&T Joseph and Josephine Kulik have been generous friends to the university throughout many years. Their ambition has always been to help attract some of the best and brightest students to Mines to pursue an education and encourage them to become responsible and productive graduates in American society. “Once you graduate from the School of Mines you tend to compare yourself to other students from other universities and you feel they come up lacking. I felt my degree at Mines was so much more valuable because of the time I put into my course work and because of my professors. It was also like an entrance to the new world. The School of Mines taught me how to be honest and ethical,” Joe said. The Kuliks established the Joseph W. & Josephine B. Kulik Scholarship, the Joseph W. & Josephine B. Kulik Black Hills Field Station Scholarship, the Kulik Black Hills National Science Field Station fund, the Joseph W. & Josephine B. Kulik Sedimentary GeologyMasters fund, the Joseph W. & Josephine B. Kulik Geology-Ph.D. fund, and have shown support in many other ways to Mines through the years. Dr. Laurie Anderson, SDSM&T Head and Professor of the Geology and Geological Engineering department stated, “Joseph Kulik is an enthusiastic supporter of the department of geology and geological engineering and the Black Hills Natural Sciences Field Station. The department greatly appreciates the unwavering support of Mr. Kulik and his wife, Josephine.” Joe (GeolE 61) was born in 1939 in New York City. His father emigrated from Poland and his mother was born to poor Polish immigrant parents near the coal mines of Scranton, Pennsylvania. Joe and his family lived in a poor tenement slum neighborhood for $14 a month in the lower east side, Manhattan, alongside a melting pot of immigrants. To raise money, he sold scrap metal, copper, rags, and newspapers to junk dealers. He and his friends made their own toys and scooters from orange crates and skates, and played stick-ball, tag, hide-and-seek, dodge ball, and snowball games. Joe’s creativity and business insight enabled him to convert toy cap pistols into zip guns that fired .22 caliber shells which he sold for one dollar. During the summer, Joe worked for one dollar per hour delivering Western Union telegrams, and sold pretzels, candy, and Joseph and Josephine Kulik newspapers in a Joe traveled to Rapid City by 14th Street subway Greyhound bus, a 54-hour trip newsstand. Joe attended New York City with changeovers in Chicago and public schools staffed by strict Omaha. He met his wife, Josephine, veterans and Irish and Jewish a Washington D.C. native, in the teachers who taught a rigorous Chicago bus station where she was curriculum. In 1954, he attended bound to Augustana College in all-boys Haaren High School near Sioux Falls, and they eventually the Hudson River. In 1957, Joe married in 1963. Taking the maximum load of graduated as class valedictorian and 18 hours and occasionally 21 hours, received numerous school awards. He and his family could not afford Joe was ecstatic when he made the Columbia at $45 per credit hour, honor roll about half a dozen times. but Joe’s father’s life savings of He managed to graduate in 1961 almost $5,000 enabled Joe to afford in the upper quarter of his class Mines for $5 per credit hour, which along with 150 seniors remaining covered all four years at Connolly from a freshman class of 300. Total Hall, meals, books, fees, and tuition. enrollment was 600 students of Joe then applied as a geological which six were girls. “My career engineering major to his first and goal was geology and thanks to the only choice for college which was School of Mines, I fulfilled that the South Dakota School of Mines, dream,” Joe said. Joe was hired by Texaco in 1968 and he received a one hundred for $900 a month, and moved to dollar freshman scholarship. “I want to give back to the School of Midland, TX with his wife, Jo. He Mines because when I was in my was given the task of developing high school, I received a scholarship prospects and mapping fields by which helped pay for my books and unraveling the complex geology supplies. It surprised me because I of the Permian Basin, performing hadn’t applied for any assistance, well-site work on 20,000-foot wells, but it was very generous at the time and conducting field work in New and meant a lot to me coming from Mexico’s Sacramento and Caballos Mountains, and the McGregor a poor family,” said Joe. 2 Bombing Range at Fort Bliss. In 1970, Joe was transferred to Tulsa to map the Appalachian and Anadarko Basins and was given an opportunity to live and work in Denver for Tenneco in 1972. At the beginning of the oil boom in 1975, he joined Koch Explorations. In 1978, with the oil boom in full swing, Joe was asked to become an area geologist covering the Williston Basin in North and South Dakota with Inexco. Their company with 216 employees enjoyed much success, and as a result, Joe received extraordinary benefits. When laid off in 1986, Joe relied on his wits and connection with a successful ex-Tenneco land man pursuing his Williston Basin ideas by purchasing acreage and presenting them to hundreds of companies and individuals. They succeeded in buying mineral and fee leases on a Red River prospect in Bowmen County, North Dakota, which was soon drilled with a new horizontal drilling technique by Burlington Resources. Eventually their mineral and royalty interest was placed in a unit of 69 wells. This endeavor resulted in a highly successful investment that appreciated in value well over 30 times. “The great memories at Mines keep me sustained. I am really grateful for my time at Mines and for the professors,” Joe said. Nuri Uzunlar, SDSM&T director of the Black Hills Sciences and Field Station and professor of the geology and geological engineering department stated, “Joe is a dear friend of mine who puts others before him. He generously gives while he lives a very modest life. I am very grateful for his generosity.” The Foundation is very thankful to have the Kuliks’ support. Their generosity has helped many students attend Mines and achieve their goals. Jim (ME 74) and Connie Green proudly donated a six-foot bronze sculpture of SDSM&T’s mascot, Grubby, to campus in 2011. Jim and Connie contributed Grubby to the students as a reminder of the hard-working, funloving spirit that has made the institution great. The sculpture was created by Black Hills Bronze artist-inresidence, Joe Kittel, in their Hill City foundry. At that time, there were also 10 miniatures bronzed for the Foundation to offer for sale. This is a numbered collection, and the Foundation is offering the statues for sale at $1,500 each. They recently established an endowed scholarship, The Alan and Mary Kay Hann Scholarship, which will be awarded to an incoming freshman student preferably from Harding County, SD or from western SD, if there is no eligible student from Harding County. “The degree I earned from Mines made it possible for a small town kid to get offers from 31 companies across the US. I found that the auto, steel, machinery, oil, aircraft, aluminum and other industries were looking for SD graduates as they brought a pragmatic approach to their work and felt no sense of entitlement. Best of all, I was able to find my future wife who had transferred into the same department as me on the same day. We hope our scholarship will add a bit of a boost to future hard-working students,” said Alan. Alan grew up in Buffalo, SD a small town of around 400 people in the northwestern part of the state. The large ranching county was sparsely populated. His fouryear high school had less than 100 students and a very limited math and science offering. Calculus and foreign language were not offered at all. “My parents believed in us learning a work ethic, so the summer of second grade my father bought a lawn mower and said my brother and I were to start a business, pay for the upkeep, obtain the customers and learn what it is like to work for other people,” Alan stated. “During the sixth grade they purchased a small hotel where I learned to clerk, paint, and repair. Branching out for a higher pay, I started working at the Texaco station and Ford dealership. By age 16, I was managing the bookkeeping and inventory at the dealerships, later taking on delivery of bulk fuel deliveries,” he said. During the college summers, Alan worked at the local bank filling in various positions as the vacation replacement. He originally went into the pre-med program offered at the University of South Dakota, in Vermillion but after three semesters he realized he did not have the patience or money to continue. Alan transferred to Mines in the spring of 1966 where his brother, Court Hann (MetE 65), was preparing to graduate. “I liked the small size of the campus and the even smaller group in metallurgical engineering, so I decided that would be a good major for me to pursue,” Alan said. Alan enjoyed participating in the flying club, where he was able to get his license and spend time in the air. Mary Kay grew up in Grand Junction, CO where she graduated from high school and attended junior college before enrolling at the University of Colorado Boulder. Alan and Mary Kay have been married for 45 years. They have one daughter, Jennie, who was born in Buffalo, SD and is now writing her doctoral thesis Mary Kay and Alan Hann at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD. After graduating from Mines, Alan took a job at IBM Boulder, CO in the engineering department which was responsible for implementing ideas from research and development to the manufacturing floor and getting manufacturing engineering up to speed once the transition was complete. It was there that he met and married his wife who had started at IBM in 1966. After a couple of years in Boulder they were looking for new challenges and Alan transferred to IBM El Paso, TX as a system engineer and Mary Kay moved to the data products division. In 1974, Alan and Mary Kay began the search for something outside of corporate administration. The CEO position opened for the bank in Buffalo, SD so Alan wrote to the board and applied and was accepted. After 14 years at the bank in Buffalo, Alan was offered a position to partner with a banker/rancher at a bank in Dickinson, ND taking over during a troublesome Freshman Scholarships The cost of a college education is a major concern for families today. Many families are reluctant to take on college loan debt because they worry about being able to repay it. Scholarships can make all the difference and change the path of students’ lives. Our students are some of the best and brightest from around the country and have numerous options when it comes to selecting a university. The ability to offer competitive scholarship packages to our students remains a vital part of the future for Mines. As the student body continues to increase, the quality of incoming freshmen has remained steady. In fall 2014, the average GPA of incoming freshman was 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and rank in high school graduating classes was comparable to previous years. Together we will ensure that the university remains competitive in educating the next generation of leaders in engineering and science. This year, because of the generous support of alumni and friends of SDSM&T, approximately 55% of our freshmen received merit scholarships. period after the first oil boom and bust in western ND. They later purchased another troubled bank in Bowman, ND and integrated it into the Dickinson bank after cleaning it up. They sold the banks in 1996, to what is now Wells Fargo. “I think the strongest thing that Mines taught me was the value of hard work and perseverance. The first year or so was tough competing with those from larger schools who had much better math and science backgrounds, but by the beginning of the third year I was able to catch up with some of those who had been coasting a bit. I never gave up. Earning my degree helped me to be very successful throughout my career,” Alan said. Alan retired in 1996 and he and Mary Kay reside in Santa Fe, NM. They enjoy the mountains, great food, people, and culture. The School of Mines Foundation is very thankful for Alan and Mary Kay’s generosity.
