Why Turkey Content daily tours introduction stopovers hotels regular departures Introduction 2-7 Daily Tours 8 - 11 Stopovers 12 - 15 Regular Departures 16- 19 Hotels EXCELLENT REASONS TO COME TURKEY is a kaleidoscope of cultural diversity, art history and ancient civilizations… Culture & Art: Turkey's history of human habitation goes back 25,000 years. Some of the earliest-known human communities are here. Hittites, Phrygians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Crusaders, Seljuks, Mongols, Ottomans and others have all left their works of art and culture in what is now the Turkish homeland. Modern Turkey has all this—and more mobile phones than you've ever seen in one place before. Special-Interest Activities: With nearly 8400 km (5200 mi) of coastline, water sports and yachting are big favourites. Hiking, white-water rafting, mountain-climbing and bicycling are all important, and growing, as is skiing Anatolia has been the birthplace of the three major religions: Christianity, Judaism and Islam. This fact alone, lends Turkey its unique and invaluable cultural and archaeological heritage. Because of its secular position in the world, the Turkish attitude toward religion has been on of tolerance. Twenty civilizations and 10,000 years of history have left Turkey with a breathtaking legacy of ancient ruins and archaeological sites, many of which are still under excavation. “Crossroads of Civilizations”. Ancient Greeks, Persians, Arabs, Romans, Byzantines, and the Ottomans. More Roman sites than Italy… More ancient Greek sites than in Greece Proximity. Istanbul is easy to reach from all around the world. It is 11 hours from the East coast of North America and Singapore, around 6 hours from Delhi and 2 - 3 hours from Europe. Flights. SO LET US MEET WHERE THE CONTINENTS MEET! 20– 25 Page 3 Page 4 Main Regions of Turkey General Information Turkey, known officially as the Republic of Turkey, is a Eurasian country that stretches across the Anatolian peninsula in Western Asia and Thrace in the Balkan region of southeastern Europe. Turkey is bordered by eight countries: Bulgaria to the northwest; Greece to the west; Georgia to the northeast; Armenia, Azerbaijan and Iran to the east; and Iraq and Syria to the southeast. The Mediterranean Sea and Cyprus are to the south; the Aegean Sea to the west; and the Black Sea is to the north. Separating Anatolia and Thrace are the Sea of Marmara and the Turkish Straits (the Bosphorus and the Dardanelles), which are commonly reckoned to delineate the boundary between Europe and Asia, thereby making Turkey a country of significant geostrategic importance. The actual area of Turkey inclusive of its lakes, is 814,578 square kilometers, of which 790,200 are in Asia and 24,378 are located in Europe. Geography: Although it is made up mainly of mountains and hills, Turkey can be divided into seven distinct geographic regions: Thrace and the borderlands of the Marmara Sea, the Aegean and Mediterranean region, the Black Sea region, western Anatolia, the central Anatolian plateau, the eastern highlands, and southeast Anatolia. Thrace and the borderlands of the Marmara Sea contain a central plain of gently rolling hills. The region’s eastern portion reaches 2,543 meters (8,343 feet) atop Mount Uludag. The coastlands of the Aegean and Mediterranean region are narrow and hilly, while those of the Black Sea rise steeply to the heights of the Pontic Mountains. Western Anatolia consists of irregular ranges and interior valleys separating the Aegean coast from the central Anatolian plateau, Turkey’s largest geographic region. The plateau is completely surrounded by mountains. The eastern highlands are the country’s most mountainous and rugged region and the site of Mount Ararat, Turkey’s highest peak at 5,137 meters (16,854 feet). Southeast Anatolia is a rolling plateau enclosed on the north, east, and west by mountains. Climate: Although Turkey is situated in a geographical location where climatic conditions are quite temperate, the diverse nature of the landscape , and the existence in particular of the mountains that run parallel to the coasts, results in significant differences in climatic conditions from one region to the other. While the coastal areas enjoy milder climates, the inland Anatolian plateau experiences extremes of hot summers and cold winters with limited rainfall. Language: Turkish, the official language of the country, is related to the Uralic-Altaic languages spoken across Asia from Finland to Dongbei Pingyuan. Arabic is spoken in the regions bordering Syria. English is an increasingly popular second or third language. Turkey on international arena: •Council of Europe (1949) •NATO (1952) •OECD (1961) •OSCE (1973) (*) •G20 Industrial nations (1999) •EU Full membership negotiations in 2005 •EEC Associate member since 1963 •EU Customs union agreement in 1995 (*) Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe Page 5 The Marmara Region occupies the northwest corner of the country and represents 8.5% of the total area of Turkey with its 67.000 square kilometers of land. A few of the large rivers, those cutting back through the Pontus Mountains (Dogu Karadeniz Daglari), have tributaries that flow in broad, elevated basins. Istanbul is also a megacity, as well as the cultural and financial centre of Turkey. The city covers 39 districts of the Istanbul province. It is located on the Bosphorus Strait and encompasses the natural harbour known as the Golden Horn, in the northwest of the country. It extends both on the European (Thrace) and on the Asian (Anatolia) sides of the Bosphorus, and is thereby the only metropolis in the world that is situated on two continents. In its long history, Istanbul has served as the capital city of the Roman Empire (330–395), the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire (395–1204 and 1261–1453), the Latin Empire (1204–1261), and the Ottoman Empire (1453–1922). The city was chosen as joint European Capital of Culture for 2010. The historic areas of Istanbul were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985. Ankara is the capital of Turkey and the country's second largest city after Istanbul with population of 5,751,360,. The history of Ankara and its surroundings stretches back to the Hatti civilisation of the Bronze Age. Two thousand years before the Jesus, the Hittites become the dominant power of the region, and were then followed by the Phyrgians, Lydians and Persians. In the 3rd Century BC, a Celtic race known as the Galatians made Ankara their capital city. The name Ankara comes from the word 'Ancyra', which means 'anchor.' Izmir, historically Smyrna, is Turkey's third most populous city and the country's second largest port city after Istanbul. It is located along the outlying waters of the Gulf of Izmir, by the Aegean Sea. The total population of the province is 3,795,978. Izmir has almost 3,500 years of urban history. Lying on an advantageous location at the head of its gulf running down in a deep indentation midway on the western Anatolian coast, the city has been one of the principal mercantile cities of the Mediterranean Sea for much of its history. Modern Izmir also incorporates the nearby ancient cities of Ephesus, Pergamum, Sardis and Klazomenai. Antalya, Turkey's the most popular resort in the Mediterranean region (ancient Pamphylia), is an attractive city with shady palm-lined boulevards, a prize-winning marina on the Mediterranean. In the picturesque old quarter, Kaleici, narrow winding streets and old wooden houses abut the ancient city walls. Since its founding in the second century B.C. by Attalus II, a king of Pergamum, who named the city Attaleai after himself, Antalya has been continuously inhabited. The Romans, Byzantines and Seljuks in turn occupied the city before it came under Ottoman rule. Bodrum. The reputation of Bodrum boatyards dates back to ancient times, and today, craftsmen still build the traditional yachts: the Tirhandil with a pointed bow and stern, and the Gullets with a broad beam and rounded stern. An impressive medieval castle built by the Knights of Rhodes guards the entrance to Bodrum's dazzling blue bay, in which the Aegean and the Mediterranean Seas meet. The town's charm is well-known, attracting a diverse population of vacationers who stroll along its long palm-lined waterfront, while elegant yachts crowd the marina. Trabzon, historically known as Trapezus and Trebizond, is a city on the Black Sea coast. Trabzon, located on the historical Silk Road, became a melting pot of religions, languages and culture for centuries and a trade gateway to Iran in the southeast, Russia and the Caucasus to the northeast. The Venetian and Genoese merchants paid visits to the city and sold silk, linen and woolen fabric. During the Ottoman period, Trabzon, because of the importance of its port, became a focal point of trade to Iran, India and the Caucasus. Trabzon formed the basis of several states in its long history, and was the capital city of the Empire of Trebizond. Page 7 Half Day Morning Tour NO: 1.
