NICKY S TO RY Deborah Newton is a prolific knitwear designer and bestselling author who has been creating stunning garments for more than 30 years. She keeps her energy up and her heart fit with daily exercise. She tries to walk twice a day, one of those times with her cocker spaniel, Brownie, and has been a practitioner of Iyengar yoga for many years. The experiences of several family members with heart disease have made Deborah acutely aware of the importance of diet and exercise. Her mother had scarlet fever as a child, which damaged the mitral valve of her heart and eventually led to a valve replacement. One of her uncles died after suffering a heart attack as a young man, and her beloved father-in-law was diagnosed with heart disease before he passed away. Deborah believes that awareness and education are the key to combating this deadly disease. Popular teacher and designer Jill Wiseman presents beaded rope jewelry that’s incredibly fun to make. In this book, Jill teaches 24 gorgeous jewelry projects using such classic stitches as spiral rope, peyote, netting, herringbone, and right angle weave. From Flirtation, a bracelet with a cleverly hidden clasp and sparkly fringe, to Abundance, a U-shaped necklace that compels you to focus on the details, all of Jill’s designs are wearable and stylish. She will expand your design and technique toolbox, even as she redefines what a jewelry “rope” means to you! Praise for Jill Wiseman’s Beautiful Beaded Ropes “Jill’s new book is a unique study in the infinite possibilities, variations, and applications of beaded ropes. Beautifully illustrated and clearly narrated stepby-step instructions guide the reader through the 24 projects. Topped off with an inspiring gallery of rope-based jewelry, this book is a must-have for every beader.” — Laura McCabe “What I love most in Jill Wiseman’s work is the plain elegance of her jewelry—clear structures and a passion for the little details that make a piece so special and timeless. This book shows a multitude of techniques to create the classiest ropes, embellish them, and transform them into dimensional pieces. This is not only a collection of beautiful jewelry but also a brilliant overview of all the techniques.” — Sabine Lippert “Finally! A beadwork book that shows beaders how to stitch gorgeous ropes, strands, and bands! Jill’s stellar stitching instructions and covetous color combinations will have every beader who reads this book feeling like they have just enjoyed a full-on class with Jill. Her book gives beaders excellent advice and includes a gallery section that will have you inspired and scrambling for the beading tray.” — Maggie Roschyk “If you tend to think of ropes as items that go around your neck and, perhaps, your wrist, Jill will surprise you. After seeing the enchanting Bohemian Earrings and the mesmerizing Ziggurat Ring—which has found its way to the top of my absolutely-must-bead bucket list—you will open to new and exciting possibilities in your own beadwork. What I may love most about this book is it has jewelry for real women, not for runway models or high society gals. You don’t need to find an excuse to wear these pieces; they will not languish in your jewelry box after you’ve had the fun of beading them. Promise!” — Carol Dean Sharpe Jill Wiseman stumbled across the world of beads in 2001. She has taught at the Bead&Button Show, various Bead Fest shows, and bead stores and bead societies from coast to coast. Her easygoing, vibrant personality creates a stress-free and entertaining environment in which to learn new skills. Conventionally, small motifs are bonded to a larger background fabric, and the grains of the two fabrics are aligned for a neat finish. Bonded appliqué is often used when fine or soft, or loosely woven fabrics (for example, muslin, scrim or chiffon) need to be strengthened and stabilized before they are cut into shapes and applied to a background fabric. Once they are backed with Bondaweb (Wonder Under), fabrics become firmer, allowing complex and intricate shapes to be cut out from them. The layer of Bondaweb (Wonder Under) also prevents the cut-out motif from fraying, so there is no need to turn under the edges before applying the motif to the background fabric. Depending on the purpose and function of your item, the edges of an applied motif can be left raw or decoratively stitched around with hand or machine embroidery. Almost any fabric can be bonded to almost any surface – the only limitation is that the iron must be hot enough to melt the Bondaweb (Wonder Under) without melting the fabrics. Easy to Make! Curtains & Blinds This method of appliqué needs to be worked in a set order: 1 Iron the Bondaweb (Wonder Under) onto the back of the fabric from which the motif will be cut. Keep its backing paper in place and remember to use baking parchment paper to protect your iron and ironing board. 2 Draw your motif in reverse on the backing paper and carefully cut it out. 3 Peel off the backing paper and lay your motif, Bondaweb side down, onto the background fabric; align the grains if appropriate. 4 Cover your work with baking parchment and iron to melt the Bondaweb and permanently fix the motif in place. Keep the iron moving and make sure that it isn’t too hot, otherwise the Bondaweb may show through the surface of a fine fabric – for this reason it is always a good idea to do a sample piece first.
