Fishing
Anglers fishing for the latest information
on where the big ones are can get tips from
local bait and tackle shops, charter services
and marinas.
Fish cleaning stations at marinas and
campgrounds are also good places to listen
up, though you might consider wearing hip
boots to wade through the occasional bull
chips!
There is another option: Algoma’s 24-hour
Fishing Hotline! The hotline is updated
twice a week during summer and once a
week during the spring and fall stream and
shoreline runs.
While it’s hard to beat up-to-the-hour
reports from insiders, fishermen who call the
hotline will learn what baits and depths have
been producing best in recent days. Anglers
in some areas can call 1-800-626-3090. In
others, only the local number 920-487-3090
will work.
Hundreds of anglers trailer their rigs to
Algoma’s marina launch. Others prefer the
comfort of U.S. Coast Guard-approved boats
run by U.S. Coast Guard-licensed charter
captains.
Algoma has more than two dozen veteran
skippers. Most run boats 24 to 36 feet long
equipped with the latest safety and fishfinding equipment.
Experienced captains are able to stay on
top of the ever-changing movements of the
fish. Even if you have your own rig, booking
a charter with friends or family is a great
way to learn techniques of catching fish that
have evolved over many years.

Anglers eye a repeat performance
Once known as the “Coho Capital of the
Midwest,” Algoma has long since switched
gears and is recognized as Wisconsin’s top
producer of chinook salmon and rainbow
trout.
Annual charter catch reports and creel
census surveys compiled by state fisheries
workers show that more “kings” and
“steelhead” are reeled in here than at any
other port.
Some of it is tied to a large, efficient
charter boat fleet, but skilled private boat
anglers from across Wisconsin, Minnesota
and more than a dozen other states also get
in on the rod-bending action.
How world-class is the fishery? Enough
that over the past five years, more than
3,000 different anglers from more than 30
states have wet a line in a nine-day salmon
by Kevin Naze
tournament held each July!
Summer is by far the most popular time
to be on the water, but fishing is a yearround activity here. Rainbows, brown
trout and an occasional death-run coho
are hooked in deeper pools as soon as the
Ahnapee River ices over. Come February
or early March, the annual spring steelhead
run is on. Action peaks in April, but if it’s
a cool, wet spring, fish can be found in the
river well into May.
About the time that fresh-run rainbows
arrive, the harbor opens up and small boat
trollers try for shallow water browns. Those
without boats sometimes score casting
spoons, stickbaits or spawn sacs off the
piers. Shore fishing is spotty throughout the
summer — best when west winds cool the
nearshore waters — but heats up again in
September and October as spawn-minded

browns, chinooks and cohos move close.
As always, it’s impossible to try to predict
the best time to book trips for the coming
year. If you’re flexible, wait until the reports
are good, then trailer over or call a charter
captain to see what’s open. If you need
to nail a date, remember that weekend
mornings fill fast, and early callers get first
choice.
With the high price of gas in recent years,
more groups have been pooling resources to
book a charter or teaming up and splitting
costs on one private boat instead of mooring
two. Of course, the odds of bringing back a
cooler full of fillets are much greater when
fishing with seasoned captains and first
Most of the salmon and trout you’ll catch
will likely average two to three feet long and
weigh 5 to 15 pounds. However, one of the
neat things is you never know what species
or size is going to hit next. The mystery of it
all as you hold the rod and feel the power of
an unseen fish is part of the sport’s magic.
The fresh eats are also out-of-this-world
good!
fishing
Last spring, chinooks surprised some
lucky trout trollers already in April. By May,
it was a bonanza two to five miles off shore
for fish averaging 8 to 16 pounds. Unlike
2011, there were no major alewife die-offs
and no prolonged breaks in the action until
the winds of fall began to blow.
mates who are on the water once or twice
daily.
The great fishing and fast access to the
lake has lured boaters from across the
globe since Algoma hosted Wisconsin’s first
salmon stocking in 1968. Nearly a dozen
state records have been set here since, with
three of them still standing. A 42-inch,
27.11-pound rainbow trout is one of them,
while two that have since been topped are
at least as impressive — a pair of 35- and
36-pound brown trout. The heaviest chinook
at Algoma weighed 43 pounds, 3 ounces,
and stood as a state record for 11 years.

In 2007, downtown Algoma was the site of the a Walldog Wave, an event that literally changed the face of ten historic
buildings through the art form of traditional mural painting. Numerous Walldog artists (an International group of
mural painters who pledge their time as “keepers of the craft”) converged on Algoma to create and recreate historic
representations. Stop at the Visitors Center for a map of downtown so you’re sure not to miss any of these exciting
pieces of art.

If planning a trip for the first time, be sure
to bring more clothing than you think you’ll
need. It’s often much colder out on the water,
especially in late spring and early summer.
Soft-soled shoes, sunglasses, sunscreen and
a camera should also be high on the list.
Whatever you choose, think safety first.
Make sure your equipment is all in good
working order, and review boating’s rules
of the road with an online refresher. For the
latest fishing reports, check http://www.

Ahnapee State Trail — Enjoy 30 miles
of recreational trail. This trail connects
Casco Junction to Algoma to Sturgeon
Bay in beautiful Door County. Bikes,
horses and walkers are all welcome on the
crushed stone trail. Horses are welcome
on the trail beginning April 15 through
November 15. Dogs are also permitted
on a 6 foot leash. During the winter, the
trail is used for snowmobiling, although
cross country skiing is also permitted. No
fee for use. Visit www.ahnapeetrail.org or

Anadromous Fish Facility — When’s the
last time you saw a fish on a ladder? That’s
just one of the special things that you can
see at the Kewaunee River egg taking
station near Bruemmer Park. In fall and
spring, you can watch trout and salmon
fight their way up the fish ladders into
special holding tanks when they spawn.
On special days the DNR personnel at the
site will actually strip the eggs from the
fish as part of their hatchery program. In
addition to the beautifully accessible views
of the ladders, the Algoma Kewaunee Great
Lakes Sport Fishermen have installed an
underwater viewing window near the top
of the ladder to give you a close-up view
of the action.
Boat Rentals — The most popular way
to enjoy the water is to treat yourself
to a charter fishing expedition on Lake
Michigan. Check our website under fishing
for the best options. You may also contact
Ahnapee River Trails Campground (920487-5777) to explore canoe rentals. And
Beach Harbor Resort (800-231-5767) offers
crafts for a fun time on Sturgeon Bay.
Bowling — Don’t miss the chance to toss
the ball down one of Algoma Pizza Bowl’s
(487-2721) lanes.
Crescent Beach & Boardwalk — Algoma’s
award-winning boardwalk along the Lake
Michigan shore connects the Algoma

Constructed from recycled plastic lumber,
the boardwalk was built by volunteers and

Rio Creek Airport — Rio Creek Airport
was established in the early 70’s when a
group of enthusiastic pilots began building
a runway just west of “downtown” Rio
Creek. Through many hours of rock
picking and plowing, many friends and
family members helped transform a field
into Runway 7/25. The first flight out
of Rio Creek Airport was in a 1946 415CERCO Ercoupe (N386H) on August
28, 1973. Over the next few years, two
hangers, an aviator’s clubhouse and an
A-framed cabin were added as the aviation
bug captivated the small town. For more
about this attraction, visit their website at:

Lake Michigan, the Algoma Visitor Center

with all volunteer labor. Money to pay
for materials was raised from donations
from individuals, businesses, industries
and organizations. Not a dime of tax
money has been used for the project and
the visitor center is staffed year-round
by a group of over 40 volunteers—many
of them senior citizens and long-time
residents from the Algoma area. These
volunteers work four-hour shifts and give
information to visitors on attractions,

family, friends and out of town business associates.
Your port in the storm
For a small community, Algoma
offers big returns. This friendly garden spot has
good schools, many youth programs, a low crime rate, and
particularly a stable and dependable workforce. Take all of that into
consideration and you have all the right reasons for settling here.

Algoma’s location is a bona fide business plus. Situated on two major
highways, the trip to Brown, Door and Manitowoc counties is measured
in minutes, not hours.
